    I have lots of code like this in my constructors:- function __construct($params) { $this->property = isset($params['property']) ? $params['property'] : default_val; } Is it better to do this rather than specify the default value in the property definition? i.e. public $property = default_val? Sometimes there is logic for the default value, and some default values are taken from other properties, which was why I was doing this in the constructor. Should I be using setters so all the logic for default values is separated?

    Theoretical situation: One trillion foobars are stored in a text file (no fancy databases). Each foobar must have some business logic executed on it. A set of 1 trillion will not fit in memory so the data layer cannot return a big set to the business layer. Instead they are to be streamed in 1 foobar at a time, and have business logic execute on 1 foobar at a time. The stream must be closed when finished. In order for the stream to be closed the business layer must close the stream (a data operation detail), thus violating the separation of concerns. Is it possible to incrementally process data without violating layers?

    I have a simple class that essentially just holds some values. I have overridden the ToString() method to return a nice string representation. Now, I want to create a ToXml() method, that will return something like this: <Song> <Artist>Bla</Artist> <Title>Foo</Title> </Song> Of course, I could just use a StringBuilder here, but I would like to return an XmlNode or XmlElement, to be used with XmlDocument.AppendChild. I do not seem to be able to create an XmlElement other than calling XmlDocument.CreateElement, so I wonder if I have just overlooked anything, or if I really either have to pass in either a XmlDocument or ref XmlElement to work with, or have the function return a String that contains the XML I want?

So, I would like to ask I could of question to help to write an app to maintain it for me. 1- How can I access a music file and read details of it? I mean, I would like to write some code and passing the directory, my app would read all the music files (understand mp3 files) and with that I would like to access details like title, artist, length and so on... 2- Is there a public source that I could access and update my file? A webservice somewhere that I could connect, query some information based on song name, or artist or whatever. I would like to achieve a final result of given a directory, my app would read the file, collect some information and query the source for a complete list of detail and update my file.   • Finding files with bash and copy to another location and reducing depth of folders

    I'm trying to recover a mates hard drive, there is no structure what so ever so music and images are everywhere but in named folders sometimes 5 folders deep, I've managed to write a one-liner that finds the files and copies them to a mounted drive but it preserves the file structure completely. What I'm after is a bit of code that searches the drive and copies to another location and copies just the parent folder with the mp3/jpg files within and not the complete path. The other issue I have is the music is /folder/folder/folder/Artist/1.mp3..2.mp3..10.mp3 etc etc so I have to preserve the folder 'Artist' to give him any hope of finding his tracks again. What I have working currently: find /media/HP/ -name *.mp3 -fprintf /media/HP/MUSIC/Script.sh 'mkdir -p "/media/HP/MUSIC/%h" \n cp "%h/%f" "/media/HP/MUSIC/%h/"\n' I then run the script.sh and it does all the copying.   • Use Android NDK for portability with iOS?

    I am currently planning to implement a little painting app using OpenGL ES 1.1. I believe this question applies to any OpenGL ES project. I am starting development on Android and I would like to know if you would recommend writing the drawing logic (using OpenGL) in C++ with the NDK so it will easier to port to iOS, or to use the Java API and being locked on Android. The reason I am asking that is because I have seen mixed opinions on the Web about using the NDK (some people say it is an added level of complexity). From what I have already seen, I believe that I should go with the Java API since I am starting on Android and then, if I decide to go on iOS, to rewrite the OpenGL logic in Objective-C or C++. This should be pretty straightforward since the calls appear to be the same in both languages. What do you think? Am I right?

  • High traffic chat - how to check if there is new message and show it for all users

    I already had question about this but obviously it was not accepted very well, apparently too long when it's actually more information so you could have given me better answer. Ok, I will be much clearer now. Best possible logic to develop scalable chat in terms of stability, storing/reading messages on chat, updating chat on new message for all users etc.? I have most of this developed, the logic I think I miss is -- check if there is new message and show it for all users. I have this implemented but it crashes the site due to its traffic of 300k-400k people, so that's my main question. The chat is PHP based and uses Pusher (www.pusher.com) for instant messaging but it lacks what I need because it's more like a websocket. I'm using hardcoded files to keep messages (want to avoid database as much as possible). It's a no extension type of file, I'm sure you know. I'm getting crash with $fp = fopen(..., "w"); // pretend ... is the path and filename fwrite($fp, $msg); //hardcode the message fclose($fp); where $msg is the message itself. I'm having 1 file per message. I show last 150 messages = 150 file accesses and reads, yeah it's too much I guess. I have better logic now which I'm pursuing and that is 1 file with last 50-100 messages at all time. Sure it should be much better. How does it crash, that's the trickiest part because everything seems ordinary, believe me it is difficult to determine what exactly crashes the site, but in like 5 minutes when I try to open the site it's gone, then I put the old content without chat and is back online again. I'm having jquery post every 1 second to check if there is new message. I'm using timestamp in a special file where I keep the time last message was sent and if ((time() - time in file) <= 2) = reload last 150 messages including the last one. Too much input/output, write/read or however to say it I think is what crashes the site.

    In our environment we have multiple ERP servers plus data that are coming from multiple sources. I need to create a development roadmap for the coming years as it is obvious that side applications will be needed for many things. The choice is that the development will occur with Microsoft technologies. This means that I will be building either web apps (MVC, web forms e.t.c) or standard windows forms applications. The thing here is that I will be creating classes that will encapsulate the business logic that I want to apply to the different projects. What I thought so far: 1) Create class libraries dlls containing the required logic 2) Reuse these libs in my apps. But what about the web apps? Should I use the dlls directly or I should encapsulate them in web services and consume the web services in web apps? In general I would like to find out how should I build my strategy.

    For example, I've got a root object exposed in a SOA service, say Invoice (Invoice has line items as children). Sometimes, I need to retrieve its detail line items. I'm thinking to make it lazy loading, because it's a traffic overhead to transfer line items every time Invoice is required. But in SOA fashion, it seems unlikely. Because all it can expose are Invoice POCOs, with contain no logic. Thus I cannot attach my lazy loading logic to Invoice to instruct it to load lines items when needed.

    I have join a table joining songs to genres. The table has a 'source' column that's used to identify where the genre was found. Genres are found from blogs, artists, tags, and posts. So, songs | song_genre | genres id | song_id, source, genre_id | id What I want to build is a song SELECT query that works something like this, given I already have a genre_id: IF exists song_genre with source='artist' AND a song_genre with source='blog' OR exists song_genre with source='artist' AND a song_genre with source='post' OR exists song_genre with source='tag' I'm was going to do it by doing a bunch of joins, but am sure I'm not doing it very well.     Any time there is an update within my music community (song comment, artist update, new song added, yadda yadda yadda), a new row is inserted in my "updates" table. The row houses the artist id involved along with other information (what type of change, time and date, etc). My users have a "favorite artists" section where they can do just that -- mark artists as their favorites. As such, I'd like to create a new feature that shows the user the changes made to their various favorite artists. How should I be doing this efficiently? SELECT * FROM table_updates WHERE artist_id = 1 and artist_id = 500 and artist_id = 60032 Keep in mind, a user could have 43,000 of our artists marked as a favorite. Thoughts?

  • "Never do in code what you can get the SQL server to do well for you" - Is this a recipe for a bad design?

    It's an idea I've heard repeated in a handful of places. Some more or less acknowledging that once trying to solve a problem purely in SQL exceeds a certain level of complexity you should indeed be handling it in code. The logic behind the idea is that for the large majority of cases, the database engine will do a better job at finding the most efficient way of completing your task than you could in code. Especially when it comes to things like making the results conditional on operations performed on the data. Arguably with modern engines effectively JIT'ing + caching the compiled version of your query it'd make sense on the surface. The question is whether or not leveraging your database engine in this way is inherently bad design practice (and why). The lines become blurred further when all the logic exists inside the database and you're just hitting it via an ORM.

Therefore, we need something like synthetic database records implementing the following logic: synthetic[1] = wrong_data synthetic[2] = correct_data between Januar and March, wrong_data otherwise With this, we can easily perform our analyses on synthetic records. Should such synthetic records be implemented in the application logic or on the side of the database? What are common pitfalls of such an implementation?

    I love programming methods, and functions. The if {}, while {}, etc... logic behind them is so much fun. I also love making commits, merging branches, solving merge conflicts. Unfortunately these activities usually require that I create classes which I find tedious and monotonous. The simple action of defining properties, is getting in the way of me writing the logic on what to do with those properties. I can't be alone here there has to be a part of coding for everyone that they dread or at least severely dislike doing compared to other parts of coding. How do you deal with the code based tasks that you find tedious?

  • raid 0 data recovery?

    HI All, I have two identical seagate 7200.9 500Gb drives confiured as a RAID 0 spanned disk in windows. One of the drives has lost power and wont spin up at all. I know this normally means death for the data on both drives but i have a cunning plan.. DISK 1 - NO POWER RAID 0 DISK DISK 2 - FULLY FUNCTIONAL RAID 0 DISK DISK 3 - FULLY FUNCTIONAL SPARE DISK Copy the working drive (disk 2) data to a third 500GB DISK (disk 3), remove the logic board from the working disk (disk 2) and replace it with the non working logic board on the broken drive (disk 1) , then hopefully recreate the RAID 0 with disk 1 and disk 3, just long enough to get the data off it. Hope this makes sense, here are my questions: Windows disk manager atm recognises disk 2 but wont let me access it in anyway, therefore copying the data off it (or getting a disk image) cant be done in windows. Does anyone know of any software (in linux or self booting) that would allow me to access this disk? Anyone know of any software that will recreate the spanned drive off two disk images Am i missing any key information that means i definitely shouldn't even bother starting this, i know its a long shot anyway but its worth a try unless i definitely cant do it. The irritating thing is that i am sure its a logic board failure on disk 1 as it simply wont power up at all, suddenly no signs of life, so i am sure the data is intact! Any help would be really appreciated! Thanks

  • Using Pandora in Boxee

    Boxee is a very cool multimedia app that lets you access and stream your digital media in many different ways. There’s also a lot of extra apps included with it, and today we take a look at the Pandora application in Boxee. Pandora has been a favorite free music streaming service that’s been around for some time now. Though there are new services like Grooveshark and Spotify that are competing, Pandora is still a reliable choice. It’s now included in Boxee, and here we take a look at using it. Create a Pandora Account If you don’t already have a Pandora account, you can easily create one at their website (link below). Pandora in Boxee To start using Pandora from Boxee, launch Boxee and from the main menu select Apps. Now from the My Apps section select Pandora. When the Pandora app menu comes up, select Start. Now you need to log into your Pandora account. After signing in you can starting listening to your stations, viewing artist info, and cover art. All while enjoying some cool visuals in the background. From the controls at the top you can control playback, skip songs, control volume, get information on why a song was picked, and give a song a thumbs up or down. Of course you can also pull up your stations and switch between them and add more. The same features you’ve come to expect from Pandora are available. One thing we noticed missing is not being able to click on the band or artist to get additional information about them –which you can do on the Pandora site and desktop app. But that isn’t a deal breaker by any means, and we’re hoping the feature will be added in the future. Then while you’re checking out other apps, shows, and setting within Boxee, the cool visuals continue and the songs from you stations keep playing. Conclusion Pandora is a great streaming music service and a welcome edition to Boxee. If you’re a fan of Pandora now you can listen to it on your home theater system.
