• how do I setup Apache's Content-Encoding Header?

  When attempting to validate my site with the W3C validator, it returns the error, "Don't know how to decode Content-Encoding 'none'". Firebug confirms that my server is sending the header, "Content-Encoding: none". But I can't find any directive in apache2.conf or in my vhost that sets the Content-Encoding header. Where does the directive go, and what should it be set to? UPDATE: On further examination it seems something is wrong with mod_deflate (gzip). It's zipping my css files just fine, but is not zipping the html generated by my php scripts. I have: AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/xml text/css And the pages are showing a mime type of: "text/html". But content encoding is "none" and they aren't zipping. Perhaps these issues are related?

• Deploying a Django application in a virtual Ubuntu Server

  I have a virtualbox machine running Ubuntu Server 10.04LTS. My intention is to this machine to work like a VPS, this way I can learn and prepare for when I get a VPS service. Apache+mod_wsgi for deploying the Django app seems the right choice to me. I have the domain (marianofalcon.com.ar) but nothing else, no DNS. The problem is that I'm pretty lost with all the deployment stuff. I know how to configure mod_wsgi(with the django.wsgi file) and apache(creating a VirtualHost). Something is missing and I don't know what it is. I think that I lack networking skills ant that's the big problem. Trying to host the app on a virtualbox adds some difficulty because I don't know well what IP to use. • mod_fcgi in virtualmin: graceful kill fail, sending SIGKILL?

  Yesterday around 1am, our server ground to a crawl. This doesn't happen often, but I'm trying to get to the bottom of it. There is no unusual traffic volume, no unusual processes running, just all of the sudden the server started killing fcgid processes. [Thu Aug 02 01:17:32 2012] [warn] mod_fcgid: process 26460 graceful kill fail, sending SIGKILL ... for as many fcgid processes as we have... CPU idle fell to 0% and I/O seemed to take up most of the load. The issue lasted about 5 minutes. I suspect there was some swap activity, although I'm not sure if it was due to killed processes being swapped in to die, or if it was because some process ramped up memory usage faster than my process watching scripts can see them. The oom-killer wasn't triggered (at least it's not logged), so I think this was Apache for some reason restarting the processes. This is not regular, and nothing obvious appears in cron. Is there a normal Apache process which might cause this? We run dozens of different sites, and it was late at night, so volume was very, very low. (maybe 200 requests in a 10 minute period).

• How to Remove Extensions From, and Force the Trailing Slash at the End of URLs?

  Example of current file structure: example.com/foo.php example.com/bar.html example.com/directory/ example.com/directory/foo.php example.com/directory/bar.html example.com/cgi-bin/directory/foo.cgi I want to remove HTML, PHP and CGI extensions from, and then force the trailing slash at the end of URLs. So, it could look like this: example.com/foo/ example.com/bar/ example.com/directory/ example.com/directory/foo/ example.com/directory/bar/ example.com/cgi-bin/directory/foo/ I've searched for solution for 17 hours straight and visited more than a few hundred pages on various blogs and forums. I'm not joking. So I think I've done my research. Here is the code that sits in my .htaccess file right now: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}\.html -f RewriteRule ^(([^/]+/)*[^./]+)/$ $1.html RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !(\.[a-zA-Z0-9]|/)$ RewriteRule (.*)$ /$1/ [R=301,L] As you can see, this code only removes .html (and I'm not very happy with it because I think it could be done a lot simpler). I can remove the extension from PHP files when I rename them to .html through .htaccess, but that's not what I want. I want to remove it straight. This is the first thing I don't know how to do. The second thing is actually very annoying. My .htaccess file with code above, adds .html/ to every string entered after example.com/directory/foo/. So if I enter example.com/directory/foo/bar (obviously /bar doesn't exist since foo is a file), instead of just displaying message that page is not found, it converts it to example.com/directory/foo/bar.html/, then searches for a file for a few seconds and then displays the not found message. This, of course, is bad behavior. So, once again, I need the code in .htaccess to do the following things: Remove .html extension Remove .php extension Remove .cgi extension Force the trailing slash at the end of URLs Requests should behave correctly (no adding trailing slashes or extensions to strings if file or directory doesn't exist on server) Code should be as simple as possible I would very much appreciate any help. And to first person that gives me the solution, I'll send two $50 iTunes Store gift cards for US store. If this offend anyone, I am truly sorry and I apologize. Thanks in advance.   Hey guys, bit of a mod_rewrite noob, I've got: RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php/$1 Which I believe says "If the file or directory exists, don't pass it to index.php". I'd like another line which says "If it's a .jpg, .css, .js - don't pass it to index.php". Any help appreciated. Thanks :)

• Lighttpd mod_accesslog not logging fastcgi requests

  I have recently installed a lighttpd for serving a python script via mod_fastcgi. Everything works fine except that I don't get the requests handled by mod_fastcgi logged in the access.log file (requests on port 80 are logged though). My lighttpd version is 1.4.28 on a Debian 6.0. I used the same working configuration a Ubuntu server 10.04 with lighttpd 1.4.26 and it worked. • Redirect to new domain and preserve username

  I recently switched to a new domain for a version control server I run. The server is usually accessed with a username included in the url such as https://[email protected]/some/stuff. I want to redirect requests to the old domain to the new domain and preserve everything else in the url (including the username). So the former url would be redirected to https://[email protected]/some/stuff. Currently I have the following rewrite condition and rule: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} sub\.olddomain\.com RewriteRule (.*) https://sub.newdomain.net$1 [R=301,L] This works except it drops the userinfo part of the URL. Is there a way I can preserve the user info?

• Apache rewrite module, 404 not found

  I've been having some problems with rewriting directory styled addresses into query strings for my php scripts. Here's the code RewriteRule ^(\w+)/?(\w+)?/?(\w+)?/?$ /index.php?section=$1&category=$2&subcategory=$3 [QSA] This line works perfectly fine on both my local wamp and lamp server, and my friend's lamp server. However on the web hotel I've been using (freehostia) I only get a 404 error when trying to browse a "directory" that isn't really there (supposed to be generated by php). I've tried connecting their support but they only say 3rd party applications aren't their job. I know rewriteEngine is turned on because some basic redirect attempts have worked. Perhaps this line of code could be better written? It's quite important that extra queries are appended and would be nice (but not necessary) if the last slash could be left out. Any help is appreciated :)

• Windows + Django + mod_wsgi = "DLL load failed"

  For a long time I was using Python 2.5 to do all this fine but recently upgraded to 2.7 since building stuff for 2.5 is a real pain. I also updated mod_wsgi to 3.3 for Python 2.7. Everything is working fine with Apache + mod_wsgi on CentOS and also in the Django runserver on both Windows and CentOS, but not with Apache + mod_wsgi on Windows. Whenever I try to access a page in my Django app I get the following (note that Apache starts fine): ImportError at / DLL load failed: The specified module could not be found. Which is caused by things like: from Crypto.Cipher import AES Etree and others cause the exact same error and it is not limited to any specific packages. Anything with pyd files fails. Googling around suggests reinstalling Python "for all users", but the installer doesn't give you that option anymore anyway. For good measure I've tried reinstalling Python 2.7 as an administrator and also told it to register itself as the default version of Python but neither helped. I think the solution might have something to do with: The fact that I have 2.5, 2.6 and 2.7 installed on this machine and mod_wsgi might be loading the DLLs for 2.5 instead of 2.7. Something to do with WSGIPythonPath, which I usually don't need to set.

• Can't copy Ilias-folder via FQDN, but via ip-address?

  I have an Ilias-Installation, which is available through two virtual hosts: the FQDN and the ip-address. The first server is ssl only, the second plain http. Both configuration files look the same except for the SSL-part: SSLEngine on SSLCertificateFile /etc/apache2/ssl/ilias.pem In the Ilias-Webinterface, I can copy a folder on the plain http. But if I try to copy the same folder on the ssl virtual host, I get the notice, that the copy was started (rough german translation here), but the folder does not show up. There are no errors in the error-logs of php or the webserver and as said, no differences beside the ssl-part. The guys at an ilias-forum did not have an idea, either. Any ideas in here?

• SSLVerifyClient optional with location-based exceptions

  I have a site that requires authentication in order to access certain directories, but not others. (The "directories" are really just rewrite rules that all pass through /index.php) In order to authenticate, the user can either login with a standard username/password, or submit a client-side x509 certificate. So, Apache's vhost conf looks something like this: SSLCACertificateFile /etc/pki/CA/certs/redacted-ca.crt SSLOptions +ExportCertData +StdEnvVars SSLVerifyClient none SSLVerifyDepth 1 <LocationMatch "/(foo-one|foo-two|foo-three)"> SSLVerifyClient optional </LocationMatch> That works fine, but then large file uploads fail because of the behavior documented in bug 12355. The workaround for that is to set SSLVerifyClient require (or optional) as the default, so now the conf looks like this SSLCACertificateFile /etc/pki/CA/certs/redacted-ca.crt SSLOptions +ExportCertData +StdEnvVars SSLVerifyClient optional SSLVerifyDepth 1 <LocationMatch "/(bar-one|bar-two|bar-three)"> SSLVerifyClient none </LocationMatch> That fixes the upload problem, but the SSLVerifyClient none doesn't work for bar-one, bar-two, etc. Those directories are still prompted to present a certificate. Additionally, I also need the root URL to accessible without the user being prompted for a certificate. I'm afraid that will cancel out the workaround, though.

• How to simulate Apache [END] flag on a redirect?

  For business-specific reasons I created the following rewrite rule for Apache 2.2.22 (mod_rewrite): RewriteRule /site/(\d+)/([^/]+)\.html /site/$2/$1 [R=301,L] Which if given an URL like: http://www.mydomain.com/site/0999/document.html Is translated to: http://www.mydomain.com/site/document/0999.html That's the expected scenario. However, there are documents which name are only numbers. So consider the following case: http://www.mydomain.com/site/0055/0666.html Gets translated to: http://www.mydomain.com/site/0666/0055.html Which also matches my rewrite rule pattern, so I end up with "The web page resulted in too many redirects" errors from browsers. I have researched for a long time, and haven't found "good" solutions. Things I tried: Use the [END] flag. Unfortunately is not available on my Apache version nor it works with redirects. Use %{ENV:REDIRECT_STATUS} on a RewriteCond clause to end the rewrite process (L). For some reason %{ENV:REDIRECT_STATUS} is empty all the times I tried. Add a response header with the Header clause if my rule matches and then check for that header (see: here for details). Seems that a) REDIRECT_addHeader is empty b) headers are can't be set on the 301 response explicitly. There is another alternative. I could set a query parameter to the redirect URL which indicates it comes from a redirect, but I don't like that solution as it seems to hacky. Is there a way to do exactly what the [END] flag does but in older Apache versions? Such as mine 2.2.22. Thanks!

• Dynamic Subdomains

  On my new site I want to have dynamic subdomains. I'm trying to make it so that the subdomains use the same web root as the main domain, all under a single CodeIgniter installation. For example, subdomain.example.com would lead to example.com/subdomain, which is actually example.com/index.php/subdomain. I've already the DNS, virtual hosts set up but I"m getting caught up on the .htaccess. The effect of the linked htaccess is that when navigating to any subdomain, it gets caught up in an infinite loop. (Error log after one request.) It's the same effect for www., which should just resolve to the main domain.

• Apache: Assign SSL server / client certs to directories

  I have multiple directories on my system, e.g., /var/www/dir1 /var/www/dir2 /var/www/dir3 And what I'd like to do is to generate a server/client SSL certificate for each directory, and then set up each directory such that the client cert must match the server cert in order to access said directory. Now, if someone has the client cert for /var/www/dir2 and they try to access /var/www/dir1, they will be unable to do so since those directories use different certs. Each of these directories is hosted on the same domain (i.e., domain.com/dir1, domain.com/dir2). Now, the problem I am having is that I am not exactly sure how to accomplish this in Apache. (Also, I don't really care for domain.com to require SSL, but I do want the directories to require it.)

• Empty rewrite.log on Windows, RewriteLogLevel is in httpd.conf

  I am using mod_rewrite on Apache 2.2, Windows 7, and it is working ... except I don't see any logging information. I added these lines to the end of my httpd.conf: RewriteLog "c:\wamp\logs\rewrite.log" RewriteLogLevel 9 The log file is created when Apache starts (so it's not a permission problem), but it remains empty. I thought there might be a conflicting RewriteLogLevel statement somewhere, but I checked and there isn't. What else could cause this? Could this be caused by Apache not flushing the log file?   I have this folder structure: /var/www/mysite/abc/ /var/www/mysite/def/ /var/www/mysite/fgh/ /var/www/mysite/ijk/ /var/www/mysite/portal/ /var/www/mysite/wyz/ Today's my server is redirecting all requests of www.mydomain.com to www.mydomain.com/portal and that's ok... But I want to modify this behavior and keep www.mydomain.com acessing the /var/www/mysite/portal/ folder on background while www.mydomain.com/abc/ still acessing the /var/www/mysite/abc/ folder as before. • RewriteRule in htaccess in subdirectory

  Windows server, running Apache. In my Apache conf, I have AllowOverride None for the root of a site and then I have a subdirectory set to AllowOverride All: <Directory /> AllowOverride None </Directory> <Directory "/safe/"> AllowOverride All </Directory> However, when I try to set up a rewrite rule in the subdirectory's htaccess file, nothing happens, I just get a 404 page not found error. Example: RewriteEngine On RewriteRule (.*) /blah?test=$1 [R=302,NC,NE,L] Rwewriting URLs are working fine from the root via the Apache conf. I don't understand why the rule is ignored. I don't want to do the URL re-writing within the conf because for this case I may need to be changing the redirects constantly and don't want to reload the server every time a change is made. I also don't want to affect server performance by enabling htaccess files site-wide, just in the subdirectory I need it.

  There's actually 2 questions. One is, how do I make RewriteCond+RewriteRule change domain2/folder1 to domain1/folder1 Actually what I want is any domain that tries to access folder1 that is not domain1 gets switched to domain1. So for example domain2.com/domain1/foo - domain1.com/domain1/foo as well as domain3.com/domain1/foo - domain1.com/domain1/foo This is what I tried RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^domain1\.com$ [NC] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/folder1/ RewriteRule ^/folder1/(.*)$ http://domain1.com/folder1/$1 [L,R=permanent] But that doesn't work. Next I tried some a simpler rule to see if I could narrow down the issue. RewriteCond ${HTTP_HOST} domain2\.com [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://google.com/ [L] I though that would make ANY request to domain2.com go to google.com so I tried http://domain2.com/foo but I get domain2.com/foo not google.com If I go to http://domain2.com I get google. Why don't I get there if I go to http://domain2.com/foo? What am I not understanding about mod_rewrite?

• Trouble with mod_proxy and mongrel_rails

  Hey there I'm trying to set up a mod_proxy - mongrel combination, but somehow, apache/mod_proxy is unable to access mongrel locally. The following is my configuration for mod_proxy: ProxyRequests Off ProxyPreserveHost On <Location / ProxyPass http://localhost:3000/ ProxyPassReverse http://localhost:3000/ Order deny,allow Allow from all </Location Mongrel/Rails ist running just fine, because I can access it from my browser, and even with lynx on the server. However, I get the following error when trying to use the proxy: [error] [client 127.0.0.1] Invalid Content-Length I would appreciate any help :D PS: Oh, and the server is running Plesk to configure vhosts, if thats important.

• mod_rewrite issue | Request exceeded the limit of 10 internal redirects

  ok what Im doing normally works but since my rule "includes" itself is giving me issues and can't find a solution after hours working on different options. I have a .htaccess with: RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/3.15.0/(.*) RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /3.15.0/$1 [L] this is for my software versions, I have a program that can request sometimes versions that are updated and in the server may be behind a couple version so I want to be able to say that whatever is comming in forward to the latest version that in this example is 3.15.0 /var/www/nameblabla/3.15.0 my .htaccess is on /var/www/nameblabla/.htaccess so the first Condition is to ignore request that already has the right path and version.. the second should be to grab all request and forward to 3.15.0... and of course not loose the path to the files I want from inside that should be the same. so far I can only get it to redirect to such directory but will loose the path and others I get the "Request exceeded the limit of 10 internal redirects" I guess this is because Im including the 3.15.0 path Any help or another way to do this with out mod_rewrite?
