  • Blacklisting: IP's or domains?

    I am implementing a blacklisting system on my website that monitors contact forms for suspicious usage (both spam content and excessive frequency). When I find somebody / robot that meets my criteria for blacklisting, I want to send them to my DB as a blacklisted entity. My question is, should I blacklist them as an IP or as a domain? As far as I can see, blacklisting an IP is going to be far more effective, because I allow people to enter their email address in the form, and they can easily just change their domain on a regular basis. However, the downside is that if I blacklist an IP, I could potentially be blacklisting a large group of people who share an IP, when only one person is bad (ie - college campuses, coffee shops, etc). Is there a solution I'm missing?

  • Handling Deployment to Multiple Environments

    How should I handle deploying web applications to multiple servers? Constraints I have a dev, test and prod environment. No build server is available. Developers can't deploy to prod. The people that do deploy to prod copy files from test to prod. They don't have VS installed. Currently The way it's handled is using web.config transform. However, to deploy to prod involves putting prod code on the test server where it's copied over. Problem Sometimes simple mistakes are made, such as forgetting to change test back to the right environment after deployment. Or the test config gets moved to prod instead of the prod config. Solution So the question is, what is the best way to prevent mistakes from happening? My first thought is let the app determine which server it's on at runtime and use the appropriate settings/connection strings/etc... However, the server names could change in the not too distant future. So if multiple apps are hard coded, that would mean updating all of them. The easiest way to handle that situation would be to place a DLL in the GAC that determines the environment. Are there any drawbacks or possible complications that this would cause? Or is there a better solution to the problem than this?

What I want is to put an alias for a specific host of my domain, putting an alias (CNAME) different from the domain name (for example, if the domain is www.mydomain1.com, the alias should be www.domain2.com).     I have the following directory structure for my websites: /var/www/sitename/subdomain/(public|log) e.g /var/www/stackoverflow.com/careers/public/index.html Can I make a single generic nginx configuration to do this? So that every domain is mapped to the right directory? I would not like to edit my nginx configuration for every website I add. The root domain can always be mapped to the www subdomain.

    Is there an easier way to process multiple true/false states than using nested if statements? I think there is, and it would be to create a sequence of states, and then use a function like when to determine if all states were true, and drop out if not. I am asking the question to make sure there is not a preferred Clojure way to do this. Here is the background of my problem: I have an application that depends on quite a few input files.   • Exchange Connector Won't Send to External Domains

    I'm a developer trying to get my .Net application to send emails out through our Exchange server. I'm not an Exchange expert so I'll qualify that up front!! We've set up a receive Connector in Exchange that has the following properties: Network: allows all IP addresses via port 25. Authentication: Transport Layer Security and Externally Secured checkboxes are checked. Permission Groups: Anonymous Users and Exchange Servers checkboxes are checked. But, when I run this Powershell statement right on our Exchange server it works when I send to a local domain address but when I try to send to a remote domain it fails. WORKS: C:\Windows\system32Send-Mailmessage -To [email protected] -From [email protected] -Subject testing -Body testing -SmtpServer OURSERVER (BTW: my value for OURSERVER=boxname.domainname.local. This is the same fully-qualified name that shows up in our Exchange Management Shell when I launch it).     We just went from shared hosting to a VPS server. We have several domain names that we have pointing to our dns, but they all point to the root of the server. What I would like now is a setup where every domain name gets its own map so we can run different sites on the VPS server. Like: www.example.com points to: /var/www/example.com www.imapwnu.com points to: /var/www/imapwnu.com First of all, is this possible? Second, I have root SSH access and Webmin, on a LAMP server running on Ubuntu. Webmin doesnt have Bind9 (I dont know if I need that, some forums pointed me towards something called bind).     Hi, I am totally new to the DNS and server hosting world and not quite sure what I need. I want to get a domain, forward it to my own server, so that the user sees example.com in the url bar and example.com/foo/bar will work. Depending on what subdomain it is, it should do different things (another base-directory at webserver, ftp, etc). Also my email should be able to be sent to and received by that server. What irritates me, is the fact, that in the A-record I can only list IP-addresses and no ports. So do I have to set up a nameserver on my own server? Or do I accomplish this via vhosts on my webserver? I would appreciate any help or link to a tutorial. I know how DNS works, know some basic apache-stuff, etc... so no need to explain that. Thanks

  • Copy files between two windows machines on seperate domains

    I need to copy several database backups between two computers. The source computer initiates the copy and is a Windows 2000 pc and is a member of domain1. The destination machine is running Windows Server 2000 and is a member of domain2. The machines are on separate networks physically connected via a firewall. The files are currently copied via ssh with http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/ installed on the destination machine. There is no need to encrypt the contents during the copy, however the passwords should not be sent in the clear. I am looking for a way to copy the files without having to install a server on the destination. I specifically need help with how to set up the permissions and what ports would need to be opened on the firewall.

  • How to correctly configure DNS for Icelandic domains and Plesk

    I have a domain registered with ISNIC (domain.is). They only let you set nameservers that pass their requirements. I've been told it's this requirement that I need to fix: Nameserver must be consistently registered in DNS, i.e. its own A resource record must be available and a corresponding PTR resource record as well. I allocated two new IP addresses from my server host and at that point set their PTR records to ns0.domain.is and ns1.domain.is. After that I created two A records for that domain in Plesk, again ns0. and ns2.domain.is with their respective IPs. Next, I went to the ISNIC page to register my nameservers, along with their IP addresses I'd allocated and this worked perfectly for both without error. So the final job was to set the nameservers for the domain via ISNIC's control panel, however when I try, I'm getting this error: Test results for "NS0.DOMAIN.IS": The nameserver ns1.vps123.vpsprovider.com is not consistently registered in DNS (ns1.vps123.vpsprovider.com => 1123.123.123.123 => vps123.vpsprovider.com) The nameserver ns0.vps123.vpsprovider.com is not consistently registered in DNS (ns0.vps123.vpsprovider.com => 1123.123.123.123 => vps123.vpsprovider.com) The nameserver ns0.DOMAIN.IS is missing from the NS record set for DOMAIN.IS Test results for "NS1.DOMAIN.IS": The nameserver ns1.DOMAIN.IS is missing from the NS record set for DOMAIN.IS The nameserver ns0.DOMAIN.IS is missing from the NS record set for DOMAIN.IS This is really at the limits of my DNS knowledge I'm afraid. It feels like I'm close but maybe missing a vital part, linking the nameservers in Plesk or something?

    Hello. I have a dedicated server on 1&1 and I manage it with Plesk. The problem is that if I try to send a mail outside the server, I must to authenticate with the email and the password, but if I send an email to a address inside of my server I don't need neither email or password. This is a problem because the spammers are sending mails without any problem to the server accounts. We are receiving about 900 - 1200 emails everyday! What can I do? I use qmail on CentOS Thanks

    I have a fairly simple puppet setup, one master and one node, both running Debian Squeeze 6.0.4. I have DNS entries for the two machines, client and master respectively. Both client and master's DNS entries resolve correctly on both machines to the right IPs.     I would like to block every mail that is coming in from a domain that is running on my server. Example: I have domain1.com on my mail server and I'm getting a mail from outside with an email address of [email protected] Then I know it's a Spam, because domain1.com is on my server, so the sender cannot come from outside. I want postfix to check for this, and simply block these kind of emails. I know this is a function in postfix, just don't know which one. Thanks.

  • Dual monitor setup can cause boot problem?

    I have a two monitor setup, one 22" (1680x1050 res., 16:10) and another 19" (1280x1024 res. 5:4). I've installed ubuntu 11.10 beta2 x86, and the installation worked fine, the system boot was successful. I've upgraded ubuntu from the main server, and after restart, booting with the kernel 3.0.0-13, my system hangs up with a purple screen, and than nothing happens (the system boots successful with the kernel image 3.0.0-8). Nvidia current drivers not installed, but if i install it, the situation is the same. I have an Nvidia 9600GT installed. I tried to boot with one screen attached, I've tried each port, but no luck at all. With kernel image 3.0.0-8 the system successfully boots with each display attached, but the farther kernels (3.0.0-11; 3.0.0-12; ect.) all freezes, even one display, or multiple attached. I have two systems with ubuntu installed, and the other (with Ati HD 2400XT, latest closed drivers) don't have any issues like this, I wrote about. Update: The problem solved by reinstalling the operatin system, without automatically installing updates during install, with only one monitor attached. After completing installation, and clean reboot, i've installed closed nVidia drivers. After all, i found it's safe to connect another monitor to the system, it's not causing any problems. Probably the situation stays like this.

  • Does UNC work between two Intranet domains?

    We have some servers which will move to a new Windows 2008 domain, and some Windows 2000 servers which I would prefer to keep in their current domain for a while (until we have the resources to test and reinstall them as Windows 2008 systems in the new domain too). Can UNC still be used to connect to file server resources on the new system from the old servers? Or is UNC limited to work only within one domain? I'll do tests on Monday but every feedback would be very welcome.

  • Spoofing domains - using one domain to look at another without frame redirect

    In Plesk 9.2.2 does anyone know how the following can be achieved? I've got domain1.co.uk registered in plesk, but the domain has not been set up with any nameservers or A records, so it is unreachable from the web. However, I need to test it while we get the domain1.co.uk nameservers etc sorted over the next week or so. SO, i've got sparedomain.co.uk registered, with the nameservers and A records pointing to the server, and sure enough it displays the default plesk "theres no website here yet page" . bingo. Now, how can I set up sparedomain.co.uk on my plesk server, so it displays all the data held on the plesk account for domain1.co.uk? Frame forwarding doesnt work - because you get errors saying "domain1.co.uk cannot be found" in your browser - i need a server solution to spoof it all. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks!

  • Deploy multiple emails to email providers, but without showing favouritism

    We are currently developing a new email deployment system. We have the system currently configured so that it reads a record from the database and loads the email content and deploys it to the target. Now we want to move this over to multiple threads. That is easily done, except we then hit the email providers returning SMTP codes referring to "Too many connections", or "Deferred connection". The solution to this is to have a thread open up a connection to the email provider and deploy n emails and then disconnect. We have currently configured the application so that it will support these session based email deployments. The problem is this, the database table has multiple email addresses in and they aren't grouped by email provider because that will show favouritism. We need to be able to retrieve a set number of, i.e. Hotmail, emails (@hotmail.com, @hotmail.co.uk, @live.co.uk) so that we are reducing the number of connections to Hotmail and reducing the risks of getting the "Too many connections" error. We are at the point now where we have gone round and round in circles trying to get a solution, so I thought I'd throw it out there and see if anyone has any ideas? EDIT I would like to stress that this application is not used for spamming purposes.
