    Now that we have applied an internal to external rule blocking all users access to the internet, other than those users in a whitelist, we have the obvious issue of non authenticated users, not on our domain, i.e.; domain-less guests not being able to access the internet. Other than configuring each machine to use our alternative gateway - which would require a member of IT to be onsite everytime a guest arrives - can this be done through ISA adn AD?

It seems that Excel is using a question mark as a wild card and will turn all cells with at least one character in them red. How can i escape the question mark? These don't seem to work: "?" \?   • Remote access to server via service control panel for non-admin user in Windows 2008

    I'm trying to configure my Windows 2008 servers so that my developers can view their status without needing to log on to the box or be an admin. Unfortunately, the permissions set in Windows 2008 for remote non-admin users don't include the ability to enumerate or otherwise query services. This causes anything that contacts the SCM on the far end to fail (Win32_Service, sc.exe, services.msc etc). How do I set up permissions so that they can at least list the services and see if they are running?

    I installed BOINC (running World Community Grid) on a PC (running Vista) under an administrator's account. When logged in as a standard user, and BOINC is set to run as a screensaver, it fails to connect and run properly. Only when the program is run as an administrator, does it actually run in the standard user's account. What is the correct way to install and run BOINC for standard users (non-admin) on Windows? -- Not specific to Vista necessarily.

  • SSH garbling characters in vim/nano on remote server

    ... and it's driving me insane. Basically (this has been happening over the past couple months), I log into a few different CentOS servers (one Linode, another VPS, and a shared host to which I have shell access), running 5.5, 5.7, and 6, from my Mac running OS X Lion, using Terminal. Basically: $ ssh [email protected] [remote-host] $ nano somefile.txt Once I start editing the file, if I use the arrow keys to move around the cursor, or start deleting, then typing again, the cursor jumps around a bit, and if I save the file and reopen it, it's obvious that the cursor was, in fact, jumping all over the place on a line for no apparent reason. I end up getting things like "This is a neof text." When I had typed in (to the cursor-crazy editor) "This is a line of text." It's a big problem when it comes to editing configuration files, because I often have to edit one line, save and close, then reopen just to make sure that line is right... then edit another line... and it's getting quite annoying. I found Linode Lish Shell Vim and Nano rendering troubles: lines not appearing / cursor positions wrong, but I don't know if that relates much, since that's specifically referring to lish.

  • Effect of HOME on libreoffice to convert to pdf as non-root user

    I installed libreoffice-headless and can convert documents when logged on as root. I then tried doing so as another user, and it didn't show an error, but didn't convert the file. I then found that if I get rid of the HOME=/tmp/ayb, it works with the other user. Doesn't HOME=/tmp/ayb just allow files to default to this directory if not specified? (Sorry, I tried to search "Linux HOME", but as you probably expect, received a bunch of non-relevant results). If not, what is the purpose of specifying HOME? Why does setting HOME prevent it from converting on non-root users? Note that /tmp and /tmp/ayb or both 0777.   • Nano suddenly putting in weird characters when I type

    I am using a shell and editing a file in nano (similar to pico). A short while ago, it started doing this thing where if I type: $query = "select" * from topics where id='' "; and then I hit Backspace and try to stick the letter 'a' into the id='' part, it changes it to: $query = "select * from koala_topics where id='a='' "; and the cursor jumps around to a few spaces before. Also if I type print At the start of a new line, and then I think "Oh I should have added a tab" and I go back and try to add a tab, it adds a tab AND 2 spaces, and if I put the cursor through the word print, it turns into printnt. Some other weird things have happened too. I uninstalled nano using yum (which is how I installed it), and then re-installed it, thinking that would get me clean preferences (in case that was the problem) but it doesn't fix it.

    TL;DR: Can't use E while entering Unicode on NumPad — conflicting with Options menu OK, so I finally got entering Hex Unicode chars on my laptop using the NumPad working using this answer from this link But when I was trying to enter the Irony Mark (? U+2E2E), as soon as I hit the E, Options opened up like in old-style menus where pressing Alt + letter brought up the relevant menu. This annoying behaviour doesn't let me enter any Unicode code-point that has an E. This works fine outside Chrome. How can I stop this?

    I am trying to get a disk image of a SCSI disk using ddrescue on Solaris10 (Sparc). The disk is non-solaris, and ddrescue gets an immediate I/O error (as does dd). I used format to label the disk as Solaris, and now ddrescue reads it fine. Is there any way to get the image without labelling the disk as Solaris?

I believe that the URL ssh://[email protected]:3031/gitosis-admin.git works, but I get: '/gitosis-admin.git' does not appear to be a git repository Thank you.

    Hello, Among the millions of applications written for Windows, I assume there are probably quite a lot that are too old or too sloppy to run without administrative rights. To convert users to using non-admin accounts in their day-to-day use of Windows, I need a tool that will sort applications between those than can run safely as non-admin and those that expect to have those rights and will thus show some obvious or not-so-obvious wrong behavior as a result. Does someone know of such a tool that would be available for XP/Vista/7, and either scan the whole disk for unsafe applications, or would be started at boot time and lurk in the background so that it would show a pop-up and report applications that triggered an error because of this lack of admin rights?     I am trying to export the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Console\%SystemRoot%_system32_cmd.exe but am unable to do so, probably because of the percent signs. I tried to escape the %-sign with a caret or another %-sign, but this didn't help me: regedit /e c:\temp\cmd.reg "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Console\%%SystemRoot%%_system32_cmd.exe" and regedit /e c:\temp\cmd.reg "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Console\^%SystemRoot^%_system32_cmd.exe" So, is there a way to do what I want. Edit as per ??????? ???????????'s comment: the key is the exact string, with the percent signs. So I don't want %SystemRoot% expanded, but passed to regedit as is.

    This problem starts when I use emacs ( with -nw option). Let me first explain it. I tried to define hotkey (for emacs) as following (global-set-key [(control shift up)] 'other-window) but it doesn't work (no error, just doesn't work), neither does (global-set-key [(control shift down)] 'other-window) But (global-set-key [(control shift right)] 'other-window) and (global-set-key [(control shift left)] 'other-window) work! But because the last two key combinations are used by emacs (as default), I don't wanna change them for other functions. So how could I make control-shift-up and control-shift-down work? I have googled "(control shift up)", it seems that control-shift-up is used by other people, (but not very few results). In the Stack Overflow forum, Gille answered me as following: Ctrl+Shift+Up does send a signal to your computer, but your terminal emulator is apparently not transmitting any escape sequence for it. So your problem is in two parts. First you must get your terminal emulator to send an escape sequence, which depends on your terminal emulator, and is Super User material, or Unix.SE if you're using a unix system.   • Apache rewrite rules and special characters

    I have a server where some files have an actual %20 in their name (they are generated by an automated tool which handles spaces this way, and I can't do anything about this); this is not a space: it's "%" followed by "2" followed by "0". On this server, there is an Apache web server, and there are some web pages which links to those files, using their name in URLs like http://servername/file%20with%20a%20name%20like%20this.html; those pages are also generated by the same tool, so I (again!) can't do anything about that. A full search-and-replace on all files, pages and URLs is out of question here. The problem: when Apache gets called with an URL like the one above, it (correctly) translates the "%20"s into spaces, and then of course it can't find the files, because they don't have actuale spaces in their names. How can I solve this? I discovered than by using an URL like http://servername/file%2520name.html it works nicely, because then Apache translates "%25" into a "%" sign, and thus the correct filename gets built. I tried using an Apache rewrite rule, and I can succesfully replace spaces with hypens with a syntax like this: RewriteRule (.*)\ (.*) $1-$2 The problem: when I try to replace them with a "%2520" sequence, this just doesn't happen. If I use RewriteRule (.*)\ (.*) $1%2520$2 then the resulting URL is http://servername/file520name.html; I've tried "%25" too, but then I only get a "5"; it just looks like the initial "%2" gets somewhat discarded. The questions: How can I build such a regexp to replace spaces with "%2520"? Is this the only way I can deal with this issue (other than a full search-and-replace which, as I said, can't be done), or do you have any better idea?

  • ajaxterm: cannot type some characters (j, b, u for sure)

    I googled and came up empty. Anyone have experience with ajaxterm? Given my login name is "jae", just as on this site, this inability to enter "j" kills ajaxterm for my purposes. It looked so good. Damn. EDIT: Dammit, it was just Firemacs with its idiotic keybindings. Removed all the ones which are really "emacsy", and all's fine now. And the disappearing window was due to me changing the rows/columns, which requires a restart (of a daemon that doesn't show up in pstree, weird).

  • Wireless Keyboard Intermittent Failure to Type and Added Characters

    My keyboard has been acting up from time to time. It's wireless so this may be a wireless issue. What happens is I will be typing and then all of a sudden it seems to stop responding. If I type out this sentence it may show up like so If I ttennnnnnnnn it may ssssssp so While typing that sentence I may have to mash on a key repeatedly to get it to type. The resulting strings of letters seem to be coming as if the keyboard buffer cannot keep up. It's so weird. If I take the USB tranceiver and yank it out then plug it back in, Voila! Problem solved. I did the battery check so that's not a problem. Any suggestions? My keyboard is the Logitech MX3200
