• Cage nuts - which way to insert them?

  Cage nuts can be inserted (in square holes) either with the flaps horizontal or vertical. I've seen and used both methods, but am still not sure which is best. Is there a recommended way of inserting them? If so, why is it the best way? From my own experience, the horizontal way (on the left) seems slightly better for no other reason than making it easier to insert or pry out the cage nut in a full rack (with the units above and below being populated), for example when replacing cage nuts with a snap-in rail. • Insert escaped characters in seq command separator

  How do I insert a string containing escaped characters (\n, \t, etc) as separator for the seq command? The standard format includes a newline character: $ seq 3 1 2 3 But if I try to add something plus a newline, the backslash is escaped and a literal "\n" is used instead: $ seq -s "$\n" 3 1\n2\n3 The same happens using simple quotes, no quotes, or other escaped characters: $ seq -s "\t" 3 1\t2\t3 $ seq -s \t 3 1t2t3 This is not the standard behavior for commands such as echo, so I'm a bit confused here... Edit: Ideally, I'd like a somewhat portable solution (that works in tsch as well as bash, for instance), and without resorting to Perl or other languages.

• MySQL server simple insert/update/delete queries are taking a long time to execute

  We have a VPS hosting server with a MySQL server running on it. We host several databases for client's websites. Recently we have noticed that insert/update and delete queries are taking a long time to execute sometimes as close as 30 seconds. I use the following command to see these queries being executed: watch -n1 mysqladmin proc stat We have still not been able to track the root of this problem. I would apprecite if anyone had any pointers as to what we can check or improve to resolve the issue. Thanks

• Mysql Sub Select Query Optimization

  I'm running a query daily to compile stats - but it seems really inefficient. This is the Query: SELECT a.id, tstamp, label_id, (SELECT author_id FROM b WHERE b.tid = a.id ORDER BY b.tstamp DESC LIMIT 1) AS author_id FROM a, b WHERE (status = '2' OR status = '3') AND category != 6 AND a.id = b.tid AND (b.type = 'C' OR b.type = 'R') AND a.tstamp1 BETWEEN {$timestamp_start} AND {$timestamp_end} ORDER BY b.tstamp DESC LIMIT 500 This query seems to run really slow. Apologies for the crap naming - I've been asked to not reveal the actual table names. The reason there is a sub select is because the outer select gets one row from the table a and it gets a row from table b. But also need to know the latest author_id from table b as well, so I run a subselect to return that one. I don't want to run another select inside a php loop - as that is also inefficient. It works correctly - I just need to find a much faster way of getting this data set.

• Selecting arbitrary strings with Zend DB Select?

  I am using the fluent interface to create a Zend DB Select object/query. As part of the query, I would like to select an arbitrary string, like "SELECT 'foo' AS 'type' FROM ...". foo is not a column, it's just a string literal. When I select an arbitrary number, the query works as expected. When I change it to a string, Zend tries to treat foo as a column, and throws an error: SQLSTATE[42S22]: Column not found: 1054 Unknown column 'l.foo' in 'field list' I have tried wrapping the string in Zend_Db_Expr in various ways such as: $select->columns(array('type' => new Zend_Db_Expr('foo'))); That stops Zend from adding the correlation name, but it still treats it as a column: SQLSTATE[42S22]: Column not found: 1054 Unknown column 'foo' in 'field list' I feel like I must be missing something obvious here. How do I tell Zend to stop treating this as a column?

• MonoRail - Select parent category from one dropdown, show child category dropdown

  Hey, I'm new to MonoRail and am trying to figure out how to have it so that I can select a parent category in a dropdown then have it show a second dropdown with the categories that are children of the parent. If I were using what I'm used to, ASP.NET MVC, I would have a javascript function that would be called onchange of the first dropdown and would make an ajax call to a controller method (passing in the selected parent category id) that would grab all child categories of that parent category and return them in JSON. Then in the callback javascript function I would eval the JSON and populate the second dropdown with the child categories. How would I do this using MonoRail/jQuery? However, when I replace MyDynamicString in the Where clause with the full left(left(etc.. function, it works as expected. Can I not reference this string later in the query? Do I have to build it using the left(left(etc.. function each time in the where clause?

I want to alter the Select statement so that the new SQL Select statement can be applied to all users with different points, but I don't know how to do it.

• Bulk inserting and updating with Entity Framework (Probably a better alternative?)

  I have a data set of devices, addresses, and companies that I need to import into our database, with the catch that our database may already include a specific device/address/company that is included in the new data set. If that is the case, I need to update that entry with the new information in the data set, excluding addresses. We check if an exact copy of that address exists, otherwise we make a new entry. My issue is that it is very slow to attempt to grab a device/company in EF and if it exist updated it, otherwise insert it. To fix this I tried to get all the companies, devices, and addresses and insert them into respective hashmaps, and check if the identifier of the new data exists in the hashmap. This hasn't led to any performance increases. I've included my code below. Typically I would do a batch insert, I'm not sure what I would do for a batch update though.   How would I store the result of a select statement so I can reuse the results with an in clause for other queries? Here's some pseudo code: declare ids <type?>; begin ids := select id from table_with_ids; select * from table1 where id in (ids); select * from table2 where id in (ids); end; ... or will the optimizer do this for me if I simply put the sub-query in both select statements?

  Hi, i'm using the JQUERY multiselectable plugin. Because it's get one select box and transform it in two, where you can move one selected option to another select box. The problem is that i'm facing some problems with the edit action. When i load the form, the selected values (that are saved in my model) are not being populated in the "selected" select box. There is anybody with a good idea about how to "automatically" move the selected values in my database from the "available to be selected" to "selected" options? For now i'm doing something like <%= select "product", :option_ids, options_for_select(Option.all.map { |opt| [opt.description, opt.id]}), {},{:multiple=> true,:class=>'multiselect'} %> Here i can see already the problem. I could just use as options_for_select just all options - the options that are already choosed in my model. The problem is how to update the select box with this information?

• Powershell Select-Object from array not working

  I am trying to seperate values in an array so i can pass them to another function. Am using the select-Object function within a for loop to go through each line and separate the timestamp and value fields. However, it doesn't matter what i do the below code only displays the first select-object variable for each line. The second select-object command doesn't seem to work as my output is a blank line for each of the 6 rows. • PHP - MySQL - Select runs indefinitely

  I have three tables listings: id, pid, beds, baths, etc, etc, etc, db locations: id, pid, zip, lat, lon, etc, etc, etc, db images id, pid, height, width, raw, etc, etc, db id, pid & db are indexed. db just references the mls provider a particular item came from. in images the raw column holds raw image data there are about 15k rows in listings/locations, and about 120k rows in images so there are multiple rows that have the same pid. when i do "select pid from listings" or "select pid from locations" the query completes successfully in about 100ms. when i do "select pid from images" it just hangs in sqlyog and never completes... i was thinking since the raw column contains alot of information that it might be trying to select that too, but my query doesn't try to select that so I can't imagine why it's taking so long... any idea why this is happening??

(I'm aware, that I could search the list and set the selectedIndex property for each dropdown, but I have many items and i'm very lazy.) EDIT: npups answer works: I can select my desired item in the first dropdownlist. The problem is however, that new values based on that selected item (it is a CascadingDropDown, remember?) don't show in the second dropdown so I can't select anything there. I would need to somehow invoke the update method of the second dropdown manually: any suggestions?

  I am attempting to write a query that returns the the number of employees, the average salary, and the number of employees paid below the average. The query I have so far is: select trunc(avg(salary)) "Average Pay", count(salary) "Total Employees", ( select count(salary) from employees where salary < (select avg(salary) from employees) ) UnderPaid from employees; But when I run this I get the ora-00937 error in the subquery. I had thought that maybe the "count" function is what is causing the issue, but even running a simpler sub query such as: select trunc(avg(salary)) "Average Pay", count(salary) "Total Employees", ( select avg(salary) from employees ) UnderPaid from employees; still returns the same error. As both AVG and COUNT seem to be aggregate functions, I'm not sure why I'm getting the error? Thanks

  DELETE FROM item_measurement WHERE measurement_id IN ( SELECT (-id) AS measurement_id FROM invoice_item WHERE invoice_id = 'A3722' ) I've really tried hard to find what's wrong with the code. I tried to run this in a php page, which doesn't respond. I also tried the same line in phpmyadmin, infinite spinning circle and I had to restart the server(MAMP on Mac 10.9). No error was given in browser/ If I run the delete and select separately, they both finish very quickly. I don't think it's a performance issue because the separate run took < 0.1 sec each. Thanks for any help in advance. Edit: I also found that a simple select statement will also suspend mysql: select * from item_measurement where measurement_id in (select -id from invoice_item where invoice_id='A3722')
