  • OAuth request token for an installed application

    Hi all I'm trying to use/understand Google request token mechanism. I intend to use it for an application I've start to develop to access Orkut data using OpenSocial API. I read this document that explains the steps to obtain a token for an installed application. This document tells you to use the OAuthGetRequestToken method from Google OAuth API to acquire a request token . Accessing the manual of this function (available here). But the parameter oauth_consumer_key, which is required, asks for the "Domain identifying the third-party web application", but I don,t have a domain, it is an installed application. So my question is, what should I put in this parameter in that case? I'm using oauth_playground to run my tests. Thx

    I created a gadget which is able to post activities: function postActivity(text) { var params = {}; params[opensocial.Activity.Field.TITLE] = text; var activity = opensocial.newActivity(params); opensocial.requestCreateActivity(activity, opensocial.CreateActivityPriority.HIGH); }; And I request activities by doing: req.add(req.newFetchActivitiesRequest( new opensocial.IdSpec({'userId' : 'VIEWER', 'groupId' : 'FRIENDS'})), 'friends_activities'); My question is: How can I filter activities to only show activities posted by a specific gadget? I reckon the field "appId" is meant for this, but this field is empty in the response.

Or see what Gregory House (TV show "House M.D.") does when he is thinking. But what about the other places where you are the only programmer? If you don't stare at boring stuff on the monitor for 8 hours straight, co-workers suspect you being a slacker. Yes, not the managers who see the output. Only the co-workers who see the process and can't relate to this kind of work. Yesterday I had to explain to a trainee of some other profession that software development is like flying. The explanation from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I don't think she bought it.

I'm looking for inspiration, ideally a good implementation elsewhere on the web which isn't annoying to end users, isn't impossibly complex to develop, and which enables users to see both good and bad comments side-by-side, like this: Like: 57 votes Dislike: 8 votes --------------------------------- -------------------------------- "great plugin, saved me hours..."     I have an application where users can: Write reviews about products Add comments to products Up / Down vote reviews Up / Down vote comments Every Up/Down vote is recorded in a db table. What i want to do now is to create a ranking of the most active users in the last 4 weeks. Of course good reviews should be weighted more than good comments. But also e.g. 10 good comments should be weighted more than just one good review.     I'm designing a News Feed system using PHP/MySQL similar to facebook's. I have asked a similar question before but now I've changed the design and I'm looking for feedback. Example News: User_A commented on User_B's new album. "Hey man nice pictures!" User_B added a new Photo to [his/her] profile. [show photo thumbnail] Initially, I implemented this using excessive columns for Obj1:Type1 | Obj2:Type2 | etc.. Now the design is set up using a couple special keywords, and actor/receiver relationships. My database uses a table of messages joined on a table containing userid,actionid,receiverid,receiverObjectTypeID, Here's a condensed version of what it will look like once joined: News_ID | User_ID | Message | Timestamp 2643 A %a commented on %o's new %r. SomeTimestamp 2644 B %a added a new %r to [his/her] profile. SomeTimestamp %a = the User_ID of the person doing the action %r = the receiving object %o = the owner of the receiving object (for example the owner of the album) (NULL if %r is a user) Questions: Is this a smart (efficient/scalable) way to move forward? How can I show messages like: "User_B added 4 new photos to his profile."?

I don't really know what is going on in real programming world, so I was wondering if WPF did take over WinForms?   • Facebook insights for websites does not match on-site Facebook button counts

    I use Facebook Insights for websites and Facebook buttons on my site. However, the data reported by the two do not match. It always seems to be the case that the count reported by the buttons is significantly higher than the count reported in Facebook Insights. For example, this page http://www.appmyworld.com/blog/top-5-iphone-and-ipad-apps-of-the-week-10412.html has a count of 52 for Facebook which is made up of 19 likes, 21 shares and 12 comments according to AddThis and confirmed by http://sharedcount.com However, going into Facebook Insights for my website and looking at that specific page it shows only 4 total actions which is made up of 1 like and 3 shares. At the very least I would expect it to show a total count of 40 made up of 19 likes and 21 shares (I'm not sure it would track the 12 comments). Any thoughts on why this may be happening? My concern is if our website is not getting credit for the Facebook activity?

  • Delivering activity feed items in a moderately scalable way

    The application I'm working on has an activity feed where each user can see their friends' activity (much like Facebook). I'm looking for a moderately scalable way to show a given users' activity stream on the fly. I say 'moderately' because I'm looking to do this with just a database (Postgresql) and maybe memcached. For instance, I want this solution to scale to 200k users each with 100 friends. Currently, there is a master activity table that stores the rendered html for the given activity (Jim added a friend, George installed an application, etc.). This master activity table keeps the source user, the html, and a timestamp. Then, there's a separate ('join') table that simply keeps a pointer to the person who should see this activity in their friend feed, and a pointer to the object in the main activity table. So, if I have 100 friends, and I do 3 activities, then the join table will then grow to 300 items. Clearly this table will grow very quickly. It has the nice property, though, that fetching activity to show to a user takes a single (relatively) inexpensive query. The other option is to just keep the main activity table and query it by saying something like: select * from activity where source_user in (1, 2, 44, 2423, ... my friend list) This has the disadvantage that you're querying for users who may never be active, and as your friend list grows, this query can get slower and slower. I see the pros and the cons of both sides, but I'm wondering if some SO folks might help me weigh the options and suggest one way or they other. I'm also open to other solutions, though I'd like to keep it simple and not install something like CouchDB, etc. Many thanks!

    Hello, To short version of this question is that I want to accomplish something along the lines of what's visible on Flickr's homepage once you're logged in. It shows the three latest photos of each of your friends sorted by date but grouped by friend. Here's a longer explanation: For example I have 3 friends: John, George and Andrea. The list I want to extract should look like this: George Photo - 2010-05-18 Photo - 2010-05-18 Photo - 2010-05-12 John Photo - 2010-05-17 Photo - 2010-05-14 Photo - 2010-05-12 Andrea Photo - 2010-05-15 Photo - 2010-05-15 Photo - 2010-05-15 Friend with most recent photo uploaded is on top but his or her 2 next files follow. I'd like to do this from MySQL, and for the time being I got here: SELECT photos.user_id, photos.id, photos.date_uploaded FROM photos WHERE photos.user_id IN (SELECT user2_id FROM user_relations WHERE user1_id = 8) ORDER BY date_uploaded DESC Where user1_id = 8 is the currently logged in user and user2_id are the ids of friends. This query indeed returns the latest files uploaded by the contacts of the user with id = 8 sorted by date. However I'd like to accomplish the grouping and limiting mentioned above. Hopefully this makes sense. Thank you in advance.
