• unable remove/reinstall libxss1:amd

  Whenever I try to install anything (software-center or apt-get) I get an error report stating that libxss1:amd is in a "very bad inconsistent state" (translated from german) and that I should reinstall it. That would not bother me much but I am never sure if the stuff I'm trying will be working in the end. It really resists from being repaired apt-get install, apt-get remove, apt-get -f install, and all the usual suspects - nothing works. It always comes to: dpkg: Fehler beim Bearbeiten von libxss1:amd64 (--configure): Paket ist in einem sehr schlechten inkonsistenten Zustand - Sie sollten es nochmal installieren, bevor Sie die Konfiguration versuchen. Fehler traten auf beim Bearbeiten von: libxss1:amd64 E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) I posted the error as is, since my translation might not be exact. But I guess you can figure from my text. I found out that this file is the X screen saver. Maybe I should kill it before handling that file. If thats so, than please tell me how. I am currently programming a web app that has some models that have properties that can only be from a set of values, e.g. (not actual example as the web app data confidential): light-type = sphere / cube / cylinder The light type can only be the above three values but according to TPP I should always code as if they could change and place their values in a config file. As there are several incidents of this throughout the app, my question is: Should I store possibly values like these in: a config file: 'light-types' = array(sphere, cube, cylinder), 'other-type' = value, 'etc = etc-value a single table in a database with one line for each config item a database with a table for each config item (e.g. table: light_types; columns: id, name) some other way? • Get to Know a Candidate (16 of 25): Stewart Alexander&ndash;Socialist Party USA

  DISCLAIMER: This is not a post about “Romney” or “Obama”. This is not a post for whom I am voting. Information sourced for Wikipedia. Alexander is an American democratic socialist politician and a resident of California. Alexander was the Peace and Freedom Party candidate for Lieutenant Governor in 2006. He received 43,319 votes, 0.5% of the total. In August 2010, Alexander declared his candidacy for the President of the United States with the Socialist Party and Green Party. In January 2011, Alexander also declared his candidacy for the presidential nomination of the Peace and Freedom Party. Stewart Alexis Alexander was born to Stewart Alexander, a brick mason and minister, and Ann E. McClenney, a nurse and housewife.  While in the Air Force Reserve, Alexander worked as a full-time retail clerk at Safeway Stores and then began attending college at California State University, Dominguez Hills. Stewart began working overtime as a stocking clerk with Safeway to support himself through school. During this period he married to Freda Alexander, his first wife. They had one son. He was honorably discharged in October 1976 and married for the second time. He left Safeway in 1978 and for a brief period worked as a licensed general contractor. In 1980, he went to work for Lockheed Aircraft but quit the following year.  Returning to Los Angeles, he became involved in several civic organizations, including most notably the NAACP (he became the Labor and Industry Chairman for the Inglewood South Bay Branch of the NAACP). In 1986 he moved back to Los Angeles and hosted a weekly talk show on KTYM Radio until 1989. The show dealt with social issues affecting Los Angeles such as gangs, drugs, and redevelopment, interviewing government officials from all levels of government and community leaders throughout California. He also worked with Delores Daniels of the NAACP on the radio and in the street. The Socialist Party USA (SPUSA) is a multi-tendency democratic-socialist party in the United States. The party states that it is the rightful continuation and successor to the tradition of the Socialist Party of America, which had lasted from 1901 to 1972. The party is officially committed to left-wing democratic socialism. The Socialist Party USA, along with its predecessors, has received varying degrees of support, when its candidates have competed against those from the Republican and Democratic parties. Some attribute this to the party having to compete with the financial dominance of the two major parties, as well as the limitations of the United States' legislatively and judicially entrenched two-party system. The Party supports third-party candidates, particularly socialists, and opposes the candidates of the two major parties. Opposing both capitalism and "authoritarian Communism", the Party advocates bringing big business under public ownership and democratic workers' self-management. The party opposes unaccountable bureaucratic control of Soviet communism. • St. Louis ALT.NET

  I’m a huge fan of the St. Louis .NET User Group and a regular attendee of their meetings, but always wished there was a local group that discussed more advanced .NET topics. (That’s not a criticism of the group - I appreciate that they want to server developers with a broad range of skill levels). That’s why I was thrilled when Nicholas Cloud started a St. Louis ALT.NET group in 2010. Here’s the “about us” statement from the group’s web site: The ALT.NET community is a loosely coupled, highly cohesive group of like-minded individuals who believe that the best developers do not align themselves with platforms and languages, but with principles and ideas. In 2007, David Laribee created the term "ALT.NET" to explain this "alternative" view of the Microsoft development universe--a view that challenged the "Microsoft-only" approach to software development. He distilled his thoughts into four key developer characteristics which form the basis of the ALT.NET philosophy: You're the type of developer who uses what works while keeping an eye out for a better way. You reach outside the mainstream to adopt the best of any community: Open Source, Agile, Java, Ruby, etc. You're not content with the status quo. Things can always be better expressed, more elegant and simple, more mutable, higher quality, etc. You know tools are great, but they only take you so far. It's the principles and knowledge that really matter. The best tools are those that embed the knowledge and encourage the principles (e.g. Resharper.) The St. Louis ALT.NET meetup group is a place where .NET developers can learn, share, and critique approaches to software development on the .NET stack. We cater to the highest common denominator, not the lowest, and want to help all St. Louis .NET developers achieve a superior level of software craftsmanship. I don’t see a lot of ALT.NET talk in blogs these days. The movement was harmed early on by the negative attitudes of some of its early leaders, including jerk moves like the Entity Framework “vote of no confidence”, but I do see occasional mentions of local groups like the St. Louis one. I think ALT.NET has been successful at bringing some of its ideas into the .NET world, including heavily influencing ASP.NET MVC and raising the general level of software craftsmanship for developers working on the Microsoft stack. The ideas and ideals live on, they’re just not branded as “this is ALT.NET!” In the past 18 months, St. Louis ALT.NET meetups have discussed topics like: NHibernate F# and other functional languages AOP CoffeeScript “How Ruby Is Making Me a Stronger C# Developer” Using rake for builds CQRS .NET dynamic programming micro web frameworks – Nancy & Jessica Git ALT.NET doesn’t mean (to me, anyway) “alternatives to .NET”, but “alternatives for .NET”. We look at how things are done in Ruby and other languages/platforms, but always with the idea “What can I learn from this to take back to my “day job” with .NET?”. Meetings are held at 7PM on the fourth Wednesday of each month at the offices of Professional Employment Group. PEG is located at 999 Executive Parkway (Suite 100 – lower level) in Creve Coeur (South of Olive off of Mason Road - Here's a map). • Silverlight: DataContractSerializer cannot handle read only collection properties

  Hey Stackoverflowers :) For our Silverlight Project (SL4) I'm using a Model which might contain Lists (IList<AnotherModel>). According to good practice and rule CA2227:CollectionPropertiesShouldBeReadOnly the IList properties don't have a public setter. We serialize the Model using the DataContractSerializer which is working. But when I try to deserialize, a SecurityException is thrown by DataContractSerializer's ReadObject(Stream) Method, complaining that the target property (pointing to the IList property) cannot be set due to a missing public setter. Since the DataContractSerializer is sealed and neither extendable nor flexible so I currently see no chance to add some kind of additional rules which allow to deserialize the ILists using a foreach-loop on Add() method or some other method of transferring the collection items. I've also tried to dig into DataContractSerializer source (using Reflector) to create a little fork but it looks like i'd have to dig very deep and replicating whole serialization classes doesn't seem to be a viable solution. Do you see another chance to serialize a List with no public setter using the DataContractSerializer? Thank you very much in advance for your ideas! Thomas

• Enumerating .NET assembly resources at runtime

  I have a resource assembly with image files in it that are built using Resource or Content build action. This makes these files accessible using the Uris. However I cannot find the way to enumerate such resources. If I set the build action to Embedded Resource it becomes possible to enumerate the files with the following code: string[] resources = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().GetManifestResourceNames(); but it in turn makes these files inaccessible using Uris. The question is - how to enumerate resources that are compiled with either Resource or Content build action? NOTE: As Thomas Levesque pointed out it is possible to enumerate such resources by leveraging the AssemblyAssociatedContentFileAttribute, but it seems to only work for WPF Application assemblies and not for class library ones. So the question is still open.

• Elisp performance on Windows and Linux

  I have the following dead simple elisp functions; the first removes the fill breaks from the current paragraph, and the second loops through the current document applying the first to each paragraph in turn, in effect removing all single line-breaks from the document. It runs fast on my low-spec Puppy Linux box using emacs 22.3 (10 seconds for 600 pages of Thomas Aquinas), but when I go to a powerful Windows XP machine with emacs 21.3, it takes almost an hour to do the same document. What can I do to make it run as well on the Windows machine with emacs 21.3? (defun remove-line-breaks () "Remove line endings in a paragraph." • ASP.NET login control - can I add the FailureText as an item in a ValidationSummary?

  I'm currently working with the ASP.NET login control. I can set a custom failure text and I can add a literal on the page where the failure text is displayed if the login fails. I also have a validation summary on the page in which I collect all errors that can occur (for the moment it just validates that the user has entered a login name and a password. It would be really nice if I could add the failure text of the login control as an item in the validation summary, but I'm not sure if this is even possible? Hoping that the massive brainpower of stackoverflow can give me some pointers? Thanks! /Thomas Kahn PS. I'm coding in C#.

  I have been trying to get Ruby on Rails to migrate a database for the good part of today, the problems all seem to result with this issue, can someone please help! If its a radrails specific problem I guess Ill take this to their forums. Something is telling me this is an easy fix. >rake db:migrate (in C:/Users/Thomas/My Documents/Aptana RadRails Workspace/rp) !!! The bundled mysql.rb driver has been removed from Rails 2.2. • Round prices up to nearest 5 after conversion in oscommerce

  Hi there, A conversion question relating to prices in oscommerce: I am needing for a custom currency conversion to round the USD prices up to the nearest 5$ to avoid prices being displayed at silly prices such as $263. I am trying to convert to an int and round the following line : $curr-display_price($listing['products_price'], tep_get_tax_rate($listing['products_tax_class_id'])); ( as for some reason the price is displayed as a string, im guessing to include the currency sign) However not having much luck. Does anybody know where the root conversion takes place as it might be easier for me to round() or ceil() from there when it is a raw integer Or any other ideas of how I can round the conversion?   Hi, I just want advice on whether I could improve structure around a particular class which handles all disk access functions The structure of my program is that I have a class called Disk which gets data from flatfiles and databases on a, you guessed it, hard disk drive. I have functions like LoadTextFileToStringList, WriteStringToTextFile, DeleteLineInTextFile etc which are kind of "generic methods" In the same class I also have some more specific methods such as GetXFromDisk where X might be a particular field in a database table/query. Should I separate out the generic methods from the specialised. Should I make another class which inherits the generic methods. At the moment my class is static as there is no need to have an internal state of the class. I'm not really OOPing am I? Thanks Thomas

  Here this is what we are doing:-- an_order = Order.new an_order.name = "Dave Thomas" an_order.email = "[email protected]" an_order.address = "123 Main St" an_order.pay_type = "check" an_order.save Now it will insert a new row in orders table right. I m having a ID column in that table. Now suppose after inserting this record the value of the ID corresponding to this record is 100. Now how this 100 value came to know? Does the previous value of ID ie 99 (Suppose) is stored somewhere in some variable/file in the ORM layer or before inserting this value a query was fired to know about the last inserted value or database is itself doing that or anything else???

  I am putting in the samle date and i am supposed to do something similar what i am asking. I want to run a query that would pull values in any two columns out 3 if it has a 1 or if any one column has a 1 it will return just those results. However it should search all three columns and in any of the three columns where it found value as 1 it should return that result. Can anyone please help me with this. Thanks in advance. • Looking for easy way to analyze var_dump (PHP) on large objects

  I know (PHP's) var_dump is supposed to be "human readable" and all, but analyzing large objects is just a pain in the neck. I am struggling to make sense of a few of the large objects that are being passed around in a script that we are running. (I know that using xdebug with and IDE is a good idea, but I have not been able to get xdebug to run on this project for some reason - several days lost, ugh). Any ideas on how I can easily digest the contents of a really big var_dump? Any ideas are welcome... Although I am hoping that there is something similar to Thomas Frank's JSON tool (where you just put some code in and it gives a nice graphical representation).

• Managed C++ or C# .NET, Downloading from rapidshare?

  I am trying to download a file from rapidshare via C++ .NET but I'm having a bit of trouble. The address used to be "https://ssl.rapidshare.com/cgi-bin/premiumzone.cgi" but that no longer works, does anyone know what the new one is?   I have almost finished reading all the articles on Joel on software. I am a new developer and hoping to get something interesting to read. Here is what is currently on my list: Java Concurrency in Practice by Brian Goetz sed & awk by Dougherty & Robbins (O'Reilly) The Pragmatic Programmer by Andrew Hunt and David Thomas Head First Design Patterns Can anyone suggest anything else? Would especially like something similar to Joel. Something that is a bit edgy but informative. Pragmatic programmer has some key concepts but is a bit dry.

• NHibernate - define where condition

  Hi. In my application the user can defines search-conditions. He can choose a column, set an operator (equals, like, greater than, less or equal than, etc.) and give in the value. After the user clicks on a button and the application should do a search on the database with the condition. I use NHibernate and ask me now, what is the efficientest way to do this with NHibernate. Should I create a query with it like (Column=Name, Operator=Like, Value=%John%) var a = session.CreateCriteria<Customer>(); a.Add(Restrictions.Like("Name", "%John%")); return a.List<Customer>(); Or should I do this with HQL: var q = session.CreateQuery("from Customer where " + where); return q.List<Customer >(); Or is there a more bether solution?   Épp azon tunodöm, hogy blogom olvasói között van-e olyan, aki ne ismerné a asktom.oracle.com oldalt. Gyanítom, hogy kevesen vannak. Bár Tom mostanában elég elfoglaltnak tunik, hiszen népszeru oldalán jelenleg azt kéri, hogy elmaradásai miatt késobb kérdezzenek tole, most csupán a már megválaszolt kérdések böngészésére van lehetoség. Megjegyzem ez sem kis ajándék, ráadásul a mester aktivitását mutatja az az adat, amely a fooldalon látható: Az elmúlt négy hétben 47 új kérdést kapott, elolvasott 532 reakciót és megválaszolt ezek közül 380-at. Csoda, hogy van ideje átruccanni Európába, és eloadást tartani a hazai szakembereknek is. Információim szerint ez olyannyira egyedülálló lehetoség lesz, hogy eddig még ilyen nem volt Magyarországon, másrészt valószínuleg a jövoben nem is nagyon lesz még a régióban sem, mivel egyre inkább az a trend hogy úgynevezett virtual class-okat fog tartani o is, azaz személyesen majd maximum az éves OpenWorld konferencián lehet ot látni egy-egy eloadás erejéig. Áprilisban, Budapesten viszont két teljes napig lehet hallgatni tole a hasznosabbnál hasznosabb tanácsokat. Mik is lesznek ezek? Miért fontos a bind változók használata? Hogyan segíti a teljesítményt, a skálázhatóságot és még a biztonságot is? Hogyan muködik a materializált nézet? Mikor érdemes használni és hogyan lehet a leghasznosabbá tenni? Mikor milyen indexet érdemes használni? Mindenki tisztában van azzal, hogy indexekre szükség van, az már kevésbé egyértelmu mikor melyiket érdemes használni az optimális teljesítmény érdekében. Az eloadáson választ kapunk arra is Tom Kyte-tól, milyen szempontok alapján kell kiválasztani a megfelelo indexelést. Milyen adattárolási formákat érdemes választani? Elsore tán nem is gondolnánk hányféle trükk van az adatok optimális tárolására. Hogy csak a legfontosabbakat említsem: klaszeterezett adatszervezés, index-szervezésu tábla, particionálás, tömörítés. Mikor van szükség az adatok átszervezésére? Mik a legjobb technikák az adatok átszervezésére, hogyan lehet ezt úgy végrehajtani, hogy legkevésbé érintse az alkalmazás felhasználóit? Azt gondolom ezek a témák minden gyakorló rendszergazdának és Oracle fejlesztonek ismerosen csengenek, azonban abban egészen biztos vagyok, hogy mindenki számos újdonságot, hasznos tanácsot kaphat, ha részt vesz Thomas Kyte 2 napos tréningjén.
