Not using quotes for the attributes doesn't throw an error but fails because it's not the actual XPath string I need. I don't see anything in the YQL docs about how to handle escaping. I'm aware of how edge-casey this is but was hoping they'd have some sort of escaping guide.

• Python Locking Implementation (with threading module)

  This is probably a rudimentary question, but I'm new to threaded programming in Python and am not entirely sure what the correct practice is. Should I be creating a single lock object (either globally or being passed around) and using that everywhere that I need to do locking? Or, should I be creating multiple lock instances in each of the classes where I will be employing them. Take these 2 rudimentary code samples, which direction is best to go? The main difference being that a single lock instance is used in both class A and B in the second, while multiple instances are used in the first. • Is this a safe way to release resources in Java?

  Usually when code needs some resource that needs to be released I see it done like this: InputStream in = null; try{ in = new FileInputStream("myfile.txt"); doSomethingWithStream(in); }finally{ if(in != null){ in.close(); } } What I don't like is that you have to initialize the variable to null and after that set it to another value and in the finally block check if the resource was initialized by checking if it is null. If it is not null, it needs to be released. I know I'm nitpicking, but I feel like this could be done cleaner. What I would like to do is this: InputStream in = new FileInputStream("myfile.txt"); try{ doSomethingWithStream(in); }finally{ in.close(); } To my eyes this looks almost as safe as the previous one. If resource initialization fails and it throws an exception, there's nothing to be done(since I didn't get the resource) so it doesn't have to be inside the try block. The only thing I'm worried is if there is some way(I'm not Java certified) that an exception or error can be thrown between operations? Even simpler example: Inputstream in = new FileInputStream("myfile.txt"); in.close(); Is there any way the stream would be left open that a try-finally block would prevent?

• Documentation style: how do you differentiate variable names from the rest of the text within a comm

  Hi, This is a quite superfluous and uninteresting question, I'm afraid, but I always wonder about this. When you're commenting code with inline comments (as opposed to comments that will appear in the generated documentation) and the name of a variable appears in the comment, how do you differentiate it from normal text? E.g.: // Try to parse type. parsedType = tryParse(type); In the comment, "type" is the name of the variable. Do you mark it in any way to signify that it's a symbol and not just part of the comment's text? I've seen things like this: // Try to parse "type". // Try to parse 'type'. // Try to parse *type*. // Try to parse <type>. // Try to parse [type]. And also: // Try to parse variable type. (I don't think the last one is very helpful; it's a bit confusing; you could think "variable" is an adjective there) Do you have any preference? I find that I need to use some kind of marker; otherwise the comments are sometimes ambiguous, or at least force you to reread them when you realise a particular word in the comment was actually the name of a variable. (In comments that will appear in the documentation I use the appropriate tags for the generator, of course: @code, <code></code>, etc) Thanks!

The problem is that my code was always working in 32-bit environments, but when I try THE SAME executable in a 64-bit computer it crashes with a System.OverflowException exception. • Windows Virtual Machines will not run

  I'm trying to setup a few virtual machines to use for testing websites in the various old versions of IE. I had Microsoft Virtual PC working on an older machine using XP mode and 2 other VHD's from Microsoft that allowed me to test in IE6-IE8. I've recently gotten a new work machine and am trying to set up the VMs again for testing, however nothing seems to be working. Both the old and the new system run Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate with AMD processors. I downloaded Virtual PC & XP mode from here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx and go through the installation process. XP mode is installed, but when I try to run it it goes through the initial setup process only to fail when it is almost complete with the error "Cannot Complete Setup". (After googling I see that this might be a conflict with my processor) I download other VHD's from here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx in order to get the other versions of IE and try to set those up in Virtual PC as well. I click on them to start the machine and both Windows 7 with IE8 and Windows Vista with IE7 just hang at a black screen. I try to use Virtual Box instead, and I get Windows XP with IE6 running, but I have no internet connection in the VM. I try all different settings and try to google the correct settings but nothing seems to work. When I load the VM, XP shows that its found new hardware but it needs the drivers. One of these pieces of hardware is the network adapter, but I can't connect to the internet to download the driver in the guest OS. VirtualBox tells me I need to install extensions in order for things to function properly. I go through the installation process in the guest OS and restart the VM, however now XP is asking for validation and I can't access the VM. I try installing the other 2 OS (Vista & 7) but I get a BSOD right after the startup screen appears and the VM restarts itself. I'm getting so frustrated trying to make this work, I would really appreciate any assistance on getting the VMs up and running or any alternatives for testing websites in Internet Explorer.

• Allowing non-admin users to unstick the print spooler

  I currently have an issue where the print que is getting stuck on a central print server (windows server 2008). Using the "Clear all documents" function does not clear it and gets stuck too. I need non-admin users to be able to clear the print cue from there work stations. I have tried using the following winforms program which I created and allows a user to stop the print spooler, delete printer files in the "C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS folder" and then start the print spooler but this functionality requires the program to be runs as an administrator, how can I allow my normal users to execute this program without giving them admin privileges? Or is there another way I can allow normal user to clear the print que on the server? • Trappings MySQL Warnings on Calls Wrapped in Classes -- Python

  I can't get Python's try/else blocks to catch MySQL warnings when the execution statements are wrapped in classes. I have a class that has as a MySQL connection object as an attribute, a MySQL cursor object as another, and a method that run queries through that cursor object. The cursor is itself wrapped in a class. These seem to run queries properly, but the MySQL warnings they generate are not caught as exceptions in a try/else block. Why don't the try/else blocks catch the warnings? How would I revise the classes or method calls to catch the warnings? Also, I've looked through the prominent sources and can't find a discussion that helps me understand this. I'd appreciate any reference that explains this. Please see code below.   What my app here basically does is it captures a photo or import from gallery, and when the Upload button is pressed, the image will be uploaded to a localhost server. Before I implemented AsyncTask into the process, it doesn't have any problem uploading whatsoever. Now that I've put AsyncTask, everything went wrong. • How to close IOs?

  when i managed IO, i found a problem. i used to close it like this: try { // my code } catch (Exception e) { // my code } finally{ if (is != null) { is.close(); } } but the close method also would throw exception. if i have more than one IO, i have to close all of them. so the code maybe like this: try { // my code } catch (Exception e) { // my code } finally{ if (is1 != null) { is1.close(); } if(is2 != null{ is2.close(); } // many IOs } if is1.close() throws an exception, is2, is3 would not close itself. So i have to type many try-catch-finally to control them. is there other way to solve the problem?

• mod_rewrite [L] flag not working as expected?

  I thought the [L] flag indicated that "this rule should be the last rule processed for this http request.." However when I have 2 rules like: RewriteRule ^test$ php/test.php [L] RewriteRule (.*) error.php What always happens is requests to http://localhost/test go to error.php, not to test.php as I expected, since I put the [L] there. If you comment out the second rule there, then requests to http://localhost/test go to test.php as expected. What I'm really trying to do is catch 404 errors with mod_rewrite. Its possible what I'm trying to do is just plain wrong. But I still want to know why the catch-all rule is active since I did put an [L] after the ^test rule. I see a large listing in here where the server admin lists a bunch of paths that begin with the recognized directories, but I wanted to avoid doing this by simply using a nice catch-all rule.
