• Unable to mount root fs over NFS [on hold]

  I am attempting to set up a Raspberry Pi running Pidora to boot from an NFS share. My configuration in cmdline.txt is: dwc_otg.lpm_enable=0 console=ttyAMA0,115200 console=tty1 root=/dev/nfs nfsroot=<serverip>:/fake/path,nfsvers=3,rw,nolock nfsrootdebug ip=dhcp elevator=deadline rootwait On the Pi, the output I see is: IP-Config: Got DHCP answer from <router>, my address is <clientip> IP-Config: Complete: device=eth0, hwaddr=<macaddress>, ipaddr=<clientip>, mask=255.255.255.0, gw=<routerip> host=<clientip>, domain=, nis-domain=(none) bootserver=<routerip>, rootserver=<serverip>, rootpath= nameserver0=<routerip> (It pauses for a bit here) VFS: Unable to mount root fs via NFS, trying floppy VFS: Cannot open root device "nfs" or unknown-block(2,0); error -6 Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions: ..... • Server 2003 R2 - II6- granting access to website via IP with subnet range

  We are trying to allow for a client to connect to our website. By default we are Denying all access except for those with the specified IPs we have configured to run, everything before has just been a single IP address. However now we must implement a range of IPs and rather than input thousands of records we want to use the group of computer options in the Grant Access page. However we have it configured to work off of the IP 72.21.192.0 with a subnet mask of 255.255.224.0 They are unable to connect. Looking over our IIS logs they are receiving a 302 error which is the same behavior anyone should get whom is unauthorized to view the page in question. The IP address coming in is 72.21.217.2, so it should be well within the rage of acceptable IP addresses. I'm at a loss as everything I look up tells me to do what we are doing. So any insight would be appreciated. Especially because I'm a software guy not hardware. Thanks!

• network routing between mac & virtual XP

  Hi - I have a max laptop running XP inside VirtualBox. The network is setup to be a "Bridged Adapter" so that the IPs for both the host & guest OS's are assigned by my wireless routed. My guest XP has Nortel VPN connecting to corporate lan. When this is connected, I want to allow my host Mac OS to access the corporate network. But I'm struggling. Without Nortel VPN running, I can change routing on the mac so all traffic is sent via the guest XP - this works. But once I activate the VPN, this no longer works. If I try to change the routing on mac to run through the IP address assigned to the Nortel adapter, I get a "Network is unreachable" error. Below is the output from ipconfig /all on the guest XP OS. I'm beginning to believe that what I want to do is not possible because of the way Nortel secure the VPN - but before I give up I thought I'd post the problem here. • Windows Server 2008 R2 Virtual Network Setup

  Some background: I'm very much new to networking in general, and virtualization in particular. I'm trying to set up a series of VMs as we are transitioning to a thin client setup. I have been supplied a limited number of static ip addresses. The server is located in an offsite building which houses the network we use to connect to the internet, share folders etc. The setup I've been trying to go for is this: The host OS (Windows Server 2008 R2) is bound to one nic using one of the static ips (say, Nic1 and ip 10.255.6.61). I've set up another external virtual network attached to another physical nic , and a virtual private network attached to no nic. There is one VM running the same os (as the host). This VM is connected to both the external virtual network (and uses another static ip say Nic2 and ip 10.255.6.62) and also to the virtual private network (I gave it a static random ip 192.168.88.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0). This virtual private network is connected to all the other VMs. I'd like to share the internet connection with all the other VMs on the private virtual network, and so I installed the RRAS role on the server connected to Nic2, and selected the option to share the internet over the vpn. I've run through the RRAS wizard a few times, trying different configurations, but none of them seem to be letting the other vms connect to the 'net. The vms seem to connect to the virtual private network fine, they are assigned an ip address and everything, but no internet, and no rest of the network either. The other problem is in general I connect to the vms with RDP. Will that be possible with a setup like this? i.e. will the vms show up as computers on the network? If not, what are my other options?   First, sorry for my english and my poor knowlodge of this subject. I have a dedicated server placed in Germany (windows 2008 R2) and I live in spain. I would like to access internet from my home computer (Windows 7 Pro x64), trough my server in Germany, so I can use a German IP, what I need some times. I have complete acces in to both computers, but I just don't know where to start. (My knwoledge is limited to software development :/ ) I'd like to know where to start, if I need to create a VPN and so.. Thanks in advance! • Problem connecting to remote network using demand-dial VPN interface with Windows Server 2003

  I have a Windows 2003 server (SP2) that I'm trying to set up route traffic from my local network using a VPN My local network has the following components: Broadband router (192.168.0.1) Windows Server with a single NIC running RRAS (192.168.0.2 def. gateway = 192.168.0.1) Client Machine (192.168.0.3 def. gateway = 192.168.0.1) Using a VPN connection, I am trying to access a remote machine (10.0.0.1 for example) I configured RRAS with a demand-dial interface for the VPN and set it to be a persistent connection. As part of that setup, a static route to 10.0.0.0 (255.255.0.0) was created. When at the console of the server, I can ping 10.0.0.1 with no problems I added a route on the client machine using the following command: ROUTE ADD 10.0.0.0 MASK 255.255.0.0 192.168.0.2 If I run tracert 10.0.0.1 from the client, the first hop is to 192.168.0.2 which tells me that route is working. However, I cannot ping 10.0.0.1 from the client machine. What am I missing? Hopefully something simple.

• Customer site is out of IP addresses, they want to go from /24 to /12 netmask... Bad idea?

  One of my client sites called to ask me to change the subnet masks of the Linux servers I manage there while they re-IP/change the netmask of their network based on a 10.0.0.x scheme. "Can you change the server netmasks from 255.255.255.0 to 255.240.0.0?" You mean, 255.255.240.0? "No, 255.240.0.0." Are you sure you need that many IP addresses? "Yeah, we never want to run out of IP addresses." A quick check against the Subnet Cheat Sheet shows: a 255.255.255.0 netmask, a /24 provides 256 hosts. It's clear to see that an organization can exhaust that number of IP addresses. a 255.240.0.0 netmask, a /12 provides 1,048,576 hosts. This is a small < 200-user site. I doubt that they'd allocate more than 400 IP addresses. I suggested something that provides fewer hosts, like a /22 or /21 (1024 and 2048 hosts, respectively), but was unable to give a specific reason against using the /12 subnet. Is there anything this customer should be concerned about? Are there any specific reasons they shouldn't use such an incredibly large mask in their environment?

• KVM virtual machine unable to access internet

  I have KVM set up to run a virtual machine (Windows Home Server 2011 acting as a build agent) on a dedicated server (CentOS 6.3). Recently, I ran updates on the host, and the virtual machine is now unable to connect to the internet. The virtual network is running through NAT, the host has an interface (eth0:0) set up with a static IP (virt-manager shows the network and its IP correctly), and all connections to that IP should be sent to the guest. The host and guest can ping one another, but the guest cannot ping anything above the host, nor can I ping the guest from anywhere else (I can ping the host). Results from the guest to another server under my control and from an external system to the guest both return "Destination port unreachable". Running tcpdump on the host and destination shows the host replying to the ping, but the destination never sees it (it doesn't even look like the host is bothering to send it on at all, which leads me to suspect iptables). The ping output matches that, listing replies from 192.168.100.1. The guest can resolve DNS, however, which I find rather odd. The guest's network settings (connection TCP/IPv4 properties) are set up with a static local IP (192.168.100.128), mask of 255.255.255.0, and gateway and DNS at 192.168.100.1. When originally setting up the vm/net, I had set up some iptables rules to enable bridging, but after my hosting company complained about the bridge, I set up a new virtual net using NAT and believe I removed all the rules. The VM's network was working perfectly fine for the last few months, until yesterday. I haven't heard anything from the hosting company, didn't change anything on the guest, so as far as I know, nothing else has changed (unfortunately the list of packages updated has since fallen off scrollback and I didn't note it down).

• No network connection for vmware esxi guests

  I'm new to VMware and setting up an Esxi server as a trial with the intention of possibly virtualizing some of our servers in the near future. I have setup ESXi on a Dell poweredge server, and installed a Centos 5.6 and Ubuntu 11.04 guest os on the server. However I cannot get networking on my guest OS's. The host is connected to a network with a DHCP server via a switch and is configured with a static IP. I have the default set-up for networking on the host: both guests are connected to the default vmnic1 adapter via the virtual switch vSwitch0. One thing though, the virtual adapter shows 'Observed IP ranges' to be XXX.XXX.XXX.194-XXX.XXX.XXX.195 (I've blanked out the initial prefixes) i.e just 1 address, even though the network the host is connected to has the usual 255.255.255.0 subnet mask. On the guest machines (using DHCP) by default, I can see an eth0 interface but with no connection or assigned IP address. A physical machine connected to the network gets a DHCP lease as expected. How do I get networking working on my guest OSes? Apologies for the long-winded question.

• Vmware player change dhcp server settings

  I have a Windows Server 2003 running from a Vmware player on Win 7 box. The idea is to test Windows Deployment service in the virtual network. Is it possible to configure the vmware dhcp server with WDS related stuff(option 66, 67)? I found a few references where people were using the vnetlib.exe to start, stop the dhcp serverchange the subnet mask etc - but there's no info on how to get set the dhcp server options. DHCP config from the virtual network editor I do have the Workstation, without the license for it. In the Virtual network Editor, the DHCP settings for the network I'm using, only allows me to set the subnetmask, IP ranges and stuff like that. But not the dhcp options. DHCP server on the WDS server Authorizing the DHCP server in the guest WDS server fails. The VMware player can run its own dhcp server fro the virtual network with out any authorization from the Active directory - can I do the same, with Win dhcp server in the guest Win Server? ~~~~~ Can I authorize W2K8 DHCP server for private network, even when prohibited in enterprise network? says we have to run a third party dhcp server... :/.

• Windows 2008 R2 DHCP Overlapping Scopes

  We are trying to troubleshoot a scope overlap problem. We have multiple device types we wish to give all different ranges of a 16 bit subnet. IE. X device we wish to give 192.168.2.1-192.168.2.254/16, Y devices we wish to give 192.168.3.1-192.168.3.254/16. We are trying to accomplish this by creating different scopes and using the 60 class identifier. The problem is DHCP won't allow us to give these scopes with 16 bit masks because of the potential overlap. We aren't overlapping the address pool so why does DHCP care and can we work around this? If this isn't possible, how can i assign specific ranges by device type without creating multiple scopes? Any thoughts would be helpful. UPDATE: Entire Scope is 192.168.0.0/16 Gateway is 192.168.1.1/16 Device Hardware A - 192.168.20.1-192.168.20.254/16 Device Hardware B - 192.168.26.1-192.168.26.254/16 Device Hardware C - 192.168.85.1-192.168.85.254/16 We tried to setup multiple scopes for each device type (A,B,C) but couldn't specify a 16 bit mask as Scope A could technically overlap Scope B even thought our start and end addresses don't. • Can't ping localhost/or reach locally hosted domain

  I can't reach a locally hosted domain, and in testing I have discovered I can't ping localhost or the actual IP either. OS is Windows7 64bit, Pro. DNS works, I can ping others on my network, they can ping me, and they can reach the hosted domain. The ONLY problem I have found is that I can't reach the locally hosted domains! • Specify default group and permissions for new files in a certain directory

  I have a certain directory in which there is a project shared by multiple users. These users use SSH to gain access to this directory and modify/create files. This project should only be writeable to a certain group of users: lets call it "mygroup". During an SSH session, all files/directories created by the current user should by default be owned by group "mygroup" and have group-writeable permissions. I can solve the permissions problem with umask: $ cd project $ umask 002 $ touch test.txt File "test.txt" is now group-writeable, but still belongs to my default group ("mislav", same as my username) and not to "mygroup". I can chgrp recursively to set the desired group, but I wanted to know is there a way to set some group implicitly like umask changes default permissions during a session. This specific directory is a shared git repo with a working copy and I want git checkout and git reset operations to set the correct mask and group for new files created in the working copy. The OS is Ubuntu Linux. Update: a colleague suggests I should look into getfacl/setfacl of POSIX ACL but the solution below combined with umask 002 in the current session is good enough for me and is much more simple.

  Hi, I'm trying to set up "malware lab" described in this paper. So far, I've set up Windows guest system, adding one Host-only Network adapter, and setting this (sorry if the names aren't exactely correct, I don't have an english language version): - IP Address - 10.0.0.3 - Subnet mask - 255.255.255.0 - Default gateway - not set - Preferred DNS - 10.0.0.4 - Alternate DNS - not set And a Linux guest system - Ubuntu 9.04 - with two Network adapters - Bridged (eth0) and Host-only (eth1), and setting eth1 IP Address to 10.0.0.4, leaving the eth0 to be set by DHCP. But thing is, I don't see any of that kind of lines in log file (If I am looking in the right place, that is. :) It is at /var/log/messages, isn't it?). So, what do you think might be the problem here? I should note, that this is the first time I'm using linux, so don't expect ANY working knowledge of Linux at all... :) Also, since english is not my mother tongue, feel free to point out any gramatical mistakes... :) Thanks for any advice.

• How can I ensure that my static ip address is read from /etc/network/interfaces rather than dhcp?

  This is a follow up to the following question. I'm trying to set a static IP by changing /etc/network/interfaces to the following: # interfaces(5) file used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8) auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.2.133 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.2.1 dns-nameservers 8.8.8.8 and then running /sbin/ifdown eth0; /sbin/ifup eth0. However, the change in IP address doesn't appear to take effect without editing /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf and commenting out the following before running ifdown; ifup: request subnet-mask, broadcast-address, time-offset, routers, domain-name, domain-name-servers, domain-search, host-name, dhcp6.name-servers, dhcp6.domain-search, netbios-name-servers, netbios-scope, interface-mtu, rfc3442-classless-static-routes, ntp-servers, dhcp6.fqdn, dhcp6.sntp-servers; Strangely, after commenting out this line, running ifdown; ifup works, but when I uncomment it, the behavior does not revert to the previous behavior of ignoring changes to my settings in /etc/network/interfaces (this doesn't seem like a problem, but I really need to be able to repeat this problem so that I can be confident that my solution is robust) Also, I'd rather not have to edit /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf to change my static IP since it seems I should be able to do this by only editing interfaces. Can anyone explain the issues I'm seeing above and suggest the best way of making changes to static IP addresses take effect that admits reproducibility so that I can be sure that my approach works?

• SVN very slow over HTTP (seems auth related)

  I'm using SVN version 1.6.6 (r40053) via the command-line in Ubuntu 10.04 and connecting to a remote repository over HTTP that is in the local network. For a while, it worked fine, but has recently become very slow for any operation that requires communication with the repository, however it does eventually work after several minutes (~3m for svn up). Looking at Wireshark, it appears to be taking a full minute between the HTTP auth denied and the subsequent request containing credentials. The issue is local to my machine because other coworkers running Ubuntu are not having the issue and I've tried using my credentials from another machine and it was very fast. I tried deleting the .subversion folder in my home directory and checking everything out fresh, but it didn't help. Update: I think it's auth related. When I check out SVN repositories off of the Internet over HTTP (from Google Code, for example), everything is very fast until I do something that requires a password. Before prompting for the password for the first time, it stalls for at least a minute. Update 2: I set the neon-debug-mask in the SVN settings (in /etc/subversion/servers under [Global]) to 138 and it seems to spending a lot of time on 'auth: Trying Basic challenge...'

• Potential impact of large broadcast domains

  I recently switched jobs. By the time I left my last job our network was three years old and had been planned very well (in my opinion). Our address range was split down into a bunch of VLANs with the largest subnet a /22 range. It was textbook. The company I now work for has built up their network over about 20 years. It's quite large, reaches multiple sites, and has an eclectic mix of devices. This organisation only uses VLANs for very specific things. I only know of one usage of VLANs so far and that is the SAN which also crosses a site boundary. I'm not a network engineer, I'm a support technician. But occasionally I have to do some network traces for debugging problems and I'm astounded by the quantity of broadcast traffic I see. The largest network is a straight Class B network, so it uses a /16 mask. Of course if that were filled with devices the network would likely grind to a halt. I think there are probably 2000+ physical and virtual devices currently using that subnet, but it (mostly) seems to work. This practise seems to go against everything I've been taught. My question is: In your opinion and  From my perspective - What measurement of which metric would tell me that there is too much broadcast traffic bouncing about the network? And what are the tell-tale signs that you are perhaps treading on thin ice? The way I see it, there are more and more devices being added and that can only mean more broadcast traffic, so there must be a threshold. Would things just get slower and slower, or would the effects be more subtle than that?

• Windows 7 computer apparently connected to working wireless network but can't access router page or internet

  I can consistently connect successfully to both the router and the internet using both my phone and two different computers which strongly suggests that the issue is at the desktop end. Only my Windows 7 desktop machine has stopped getting internet connectivity. It manages to connect to the router's network using the Windows 7 wireless dialog, but can't access either the router configuration page (192.168.1.1) or the internet in general once connected. The strange thing is the wireless network icon in the notification bar shows a full strength signal, sometimes with the yellow warning triangle. In my room I have a server with two NICS: 1) wlan0 (192.168.1.2) that connects to the DSL router via wireless 2) em1 (192.168.0.1) that connects to the NAS (192.168.0.20) with a crossover cable. I have Fedora 17 and I have enable packet forwarding. • Weird vps server issue

  I have an unmanaged linux vps Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot). I have LNMP installed. Also php-fpm php-apc, varnish, memcache. I have (or rather had) several live sites on it. under normal load the server uses ~700 mb memory. But since last night its using only 20mb~ memory and a lot of the services seems to be down (according to htop) I only see nginx working and mysql starts up and goes does every few minutes on a loop.
