  • How do I reset my pointer to a specific array location?

    - by ohtanya
    I am a brand new programming student, so please forgive my ignorance. My assignment states: Write a program that declares an array of 10 integers. Write a loop that accepts 10 values from the keyboard and write another loop that displays the 10 values. Do not use any subscripts within the two loops; use pointers only. Here is my code: #include "stdafx.h" #include <iostream> using namespace std; int main() { const int NUM = 10; int values[NUM]; int *p = &values[0]; int x; for(x = 0; x < NUM; ++x, ++p) { cout << "Enter a value: "; cin >> *p; } for(x = 0; x < NUM; ++x, ++p) { cout << *p << " "; } return 0; } I think I know where my problem is. After my first loop, my pointer is at values[10], but I need to get it back to values[0] to display them. How can I do that?

  • Confused Why I am getting C1010 error?

    - by bluepixel
    I have three files: Main, slist.h and slist.cpp can be seen at http://forums.devarticles.com/c-c-help-52/confused-why-i-am-getting-c2143-and-c1010-error-259574.html I'm trying to make a program where main reads the list of student names from a file (roster.txt) and inserts all the names in a list in ascending order. This is the full class roster list (notCheckedIN). From here I will read all students who have come to write the exams, each checkin will transfer their name to another list (in ascending order) called present. The final product is notCheckedIN will contain a list of all those students that did not write the exam and present will contain the list of all students who wrote the exam Main File: // Exam.cpp : Defines the entry point for the console application. #include "stdafx.h" #include "iostream" #include "iomanip" #include "fstream" #include "string" #include "slist.h" using namespace std; void OpenFile(ifstream&); void GetClassRoster(SortList&, ifstream&); void InputStuName(SortList&, SortList&); void UpdateList(SortList&, SortList&, string); void Print(SortList&, SortList&); const string END_DATA = "EndData"; int main() { ifstream roster; SortList notCheckedIn; //students present SortList present; //student absent OpenFile(roster); if(!roster) //Make sure file is opened return 1; GetClassRoster(notCheckedIn, roster); //insert the roster list into the notCheckedIn list InputStuName(present, notCheckedIn); Print(present, notCheckedIn); return 0; } void OpenFile(ifstream& roster) //Precondition: roster is pointing to file containing student anmes //Postcondition:IF file does not exist -> exit { string fileName = "roster.txt"; roster.open(fileName.c_str()); if(!roster) cout << "***ERROR CANNOT OPEN FILE :"<< fileName << "***" << endl; } void GetClassRoster(SortList& notCheckedIN, ifstream& roster) //Precondition:roster points to file containing list of student last name // && notCheckedIN is empty //Postcondition:notCheckedIN is filled with the names taken from roster.txt in ascending order { string name; roster >> name; while(roster) { notCheckedIN.Insert(name); roster >> name; } } void InputStuName(SortList& present, SortList& notCheckedIN) //Precondition: present list is empty initially and notCheckedIN list is full //Postcondition: repeated prompting to enter stuName // && notCheckedIN will delete all names found in present // && present will contain names present // && names not found in notCheckedIN will report Error { string stuName; cout << "Enter last name (Enter EndData if none to Enter): "; cin >> stuName; while(stuName!=END_DATA) { UpdateList(present, notCheckedIN, stuName); } } void UpdateList(SortList& present, SortList& notCheckedIN, string stuName) //Precondition:stuName is assigned //Postcondition:IF stuName is present, stuName is inserted in present list // && stuName is removed from the notCheckedIN list // ELSE stuName does not exist { if(notCheckedIN.isPresent(stuName)) { present.Insert(stuName); notCheckedIN.Delete(stuName); } else cout << "NAME IS NOT PRESENT" << endl; } void Print(SortList& present, SortList& notCheckedIN) //Precondition: present and notCheckedIN contains a list of student Names present/not present //Postcondition: content of present and notCheckedIN is printed { cout << "Candidates Present" << endl; present.Print(); cout << "Candidates Absent" << endl; notCheckedIN.Print(); } Header File: //Specification File: slist.h //This file gives the specifications of a list abstract data type //List items inserted will be in order //Class SortList, structured type used to represent an ADT using namespace std; const int MAX_LENGTH = 200; typedef string ItemType; //Class Object (class instance) SortList. • Static Function Help C++

    - by Alex
    I can't get past this issue I am having. Here's a simple example: class x { public: void function(void); private: static void function2(void); void x::function(void) { x::function2(void); } static void function2(void) { //something } } I get errors in which complain about function2 being private. If I make it public (which I don't really want to do) I get errors about an undefined reference to function2. What am I doing wrong? Thank you!

  • Qt - drag and drop with graphics view framework

    - by David Davidson
    I'm trying to make a simple draggable item using the graphics framework. Here's the code for what I did so far: Widget class: class Widget : public QWidget { Q_OBJECT public: Widget(QWidget *parent = 0); ~Widget(); }; Widget::Widget(QWidget *parent) : QWidget(parent) { DragScene *scene = new DragScene(); DragView *view = new DragView(); QHBoxLayout *layout = new QHBoxLayout(); DragItem *item = new DragItem(); view->setAcceptDrops(true); scene->addItem(item); view->setScene(scene); layout->addWidget(view); this->setLayout(layout); } Widget::~Widget() { } DragView class: class DragView : public QGraphicsView { public: DragView(QWidget *parent = 0); }; DragView::DragView(QWidget *parent) : QGraphicsView(parent) { setRenderHints(QPainter::Antialiasing); } DragScene class: class DragScene : public QGraphicsScene { public: DragScene(QObject* parent = 0); protected: void dragEnterEvent(QGraphicsSceneDragDropEvent *event); void dragMoveEvent(QGraphicsSceneDragDropEvent *event); void dragLeaveEvent(QGraphicsSceneDragDropEvent *event); void dropEvent(QGraphicsSceneDragDropEvent *event); }; DragScene::DragScene(QObject* parent) : QGraphicsScene(parent) { } void DragScene::dragEnterEvent(QGraphicsSceneDragDropEvent *event){ } void DragScene::dragMoveEvent(QGraphicsSceneDragDropEvent *event){ } void DragScene::dragLeaveEvent(QGraphicsSceneDragDropEvent *event){ } void DragScene::dropEvent(QGraphicsSceneDragDropEvent *event){ qDebug() << event->pos(); event->acceptProposedAction(); DragItem *item = new DragItem(); this->addItem(item); item->setPos(event->pos()); } DragItem class: class DragItem : public QGraphicsItem { public: DragItem(QGraphicsItem *parent = 0); QRectF boundingRect() const; void paint(QPainter *painter, const QStyleOptionGraphicsItem *option, QWidget *widget = 0); protected: void mouseDoubleClickEvent(QGraphicsSceneMouseEvent *event); void mouseMoveEvent(QGraphicsSceneMouseEvent *event); void mousePressEvent(QGraphicsSceneMouseEvent *event); void mouseReleaseEvent(QGraphicsSceneMouseEvent *event); }; DragItem::DragItem(QGraphicsItem *parent) : QGraphicsItem(parent) { setFlag(QGraphicsItem::ItemIsMovable); } QRectF DragItem::boundingRect() const{ const QPointF *p0 = new QPointF(-10,-10); const QPointF *p1 = new QPointF(10,10); return QRectF(*p0,*p1); } void DragItem::paint(QPainter *painter, const QStyleOptionGraphicsItem *option, QWidget *widget){ if(painter == 0) painter = new QPainter(); painter->drawEllipse(QPoint(0,0),10,10); } void DragItem::mouseDoubleClickEvent(QGraphicsSceneMouseEvent *event){ } void DragItem::mouseMoveEvent(QGraphicsSceneMouseEvent *event){ } void DragItem::mousePressEvent(QGraphicsSceneMouseEvent *event){ QMimeData* mime = new QMimeData(); QDrag* drag = new QDrag(event->widget()); drag->setMimeData(mime); drag->exec(); } void DragItem::mouseReleaseEvent(QGraphicsSceneMouseEvent *event){ } main.cpp instantiates a Widget and shows it. When I try to drag the circle, the app just creates another circle over the original one, regardless of where I release the drag. qDebug() in DragScene's dropEvent() shows QPointF(0,0) everytime the drag ends. I'm having a hard time trying to understand exactly what I have to do, which classes I should subclass, which methods needs to be overriden, to make this work. The documentation on this isn't very detailed. I'd like to know how to make this work, and if there's some other, more comprehensive resource to learn about the graphics view framework, besides the official documentation (which is excellent btw, but it would be great if there was a more detailed treatise on the subject). EDIT: Following badgerr's advice, I replaced item-pos() in DragScene::dropEvent() with item-scenePos(), now the drop event creates a new circle in the drop site, which is more or less what I wanted. But the original circle is still in place, and while the drag is in progress, the item doesn't follow the mouse cursor. The QGraphicsSceneDragDropEvent documentation says that pos() should return the cursor position in relation to the view that sent the event, which, unless I got it wrong, shouldn't be (0,0) all the time. Weird. I've read in a forum post that you can use QDrag::setPixMap() to show something during the drag, and in examples I've seen pictures being set as pixmaps, but how do I make the pixmap just like the graphics item I'm supposed to be dragging?

  • Adding two different Objects by overloading operator+ C++

    - by lampshade
    Hello, I've been trying to figure out how to add a private member from Object A, to a private member from Object B. Both Cat and Dog Class's inheriate from the base class Animal. I have a thrid class 'MyClass', that I want to inheriate the private members of the Cat and Dog class. So in MyClass, I have a friend function to overload the + operator. THe friend function is defined as follows: MyClass operator+(const Dog &dObj, const Cat &cObj); I want to access dObj.age and cObj.age within the above function, invoke by this statement in main: mObj = dObj + cObj; Here is the entire source for a complete reference into the class objects: #include <iostream> #include <vld.h> using namespace std; class Animal { public : Animal() {}; virtual void eat() = 0 {}; virtual void walk() = 0 {}; }; class Dog : public Animal { public : Dog(const char * name, const char * gender, int age); Dog() : name(NULL), gender(NULL), age(0) {}; virtual ~Dog(); void eat(); void bark(); void walk(); private : char * name; char * gender; int age; }; class Cat : public Animal { public : Cat(const char * name, const char * gender, int age); Cat() : name(NULL), gender(NULL), age(0) {}; virtual ~Cat(); void eat(); void meow(); void walk(); private : char * name; char * gender; int age; }; class MyClass : private Cat, private Dog { public : MyClass() : action(NULL) {}; void setInstance(Animal &newInstance); void doSomething(); friend MyClass operator+(const Dog &dObj, const Cat &cObj); private : Animal * action; }; Cat::Cat(const char * name, const char * gender, int age) : name(new char[strlen(name)+1]), gender(new char[strlen(gender)+1]), age(age) { if (name) { size_t length = strlen(name) +1; strcpy_s(this->name, length, name); } else name = NULL; if (gender) { size_t length = strlen(gender) +1; strcpy_s(this->gender, length, gender); } else gender = NULL; if (age) { this->age = age; } } Cat::~Cat() { delete name; delete gender; age = 0; } void Cat::walk() { cout << name << " is walking now.. " << endl; } void Cat::eat() { cout << name << " is eating now.. " << endl; } void Cat::meow() { cout << name << " says meow.. " << endl; } Dog::Dog(const char * name, const char * gender, int age) : name(new char[strlen(name)+1]), gender(new char[strlen(gender)+1]), age(age) { if (name) { size_t length = strlen(name) +1; strcpy_s(this->name, length, name); } else name = NULL; if (gender) { size_t length = strlen(gender) +1; strcpy_s(this->gender, length, gender); } else gender = NULL; if (age) { this->age = age; } } Dog::~Dog() { delete name; delete gender; age = 0; } void Dog::eat() { cout << name << " is eating now.. " << endl; } void Dog::bark() { cout << name << " says woof.. " << endl; } void Dog::walk() { cout << name << " is walking now.." << endl; } void MyClass::setInstance(Animal &newInstance) { action = &newInstance; } void MyClass::doSomething() { action->walk(); action->eat(); } MyClass operator+(const Dog &dObj, const Cat &cObj) { MyClass A; //dObj.age; //cObj.age; return A; } int main() { MyClass mObj; Dog dObj("B", "Male", 4); Cat cObj("C", "Female", 5); mObj.setInstance(dObj); // set the instance specific to the object. mObj.doSomething(); // something happens based on which object is passed in dObj.bark(); mObj.setInstance(cObj); mObj.doSomething(); cObj.meow(); mObj = dObj + cObj; return 0; }

  • How can I access a global pointer outside of a C function?

    - by patrick
    I am trying to access the data of*tkn within a different function in my program for example: putchar(*tkn); It is a global variable but its not working correctly. Any ideas? #define MAX 20 // globals char *tkn; char array[MAX]; ... void tokenize() { int i = 0, j = 0; char *delim = " "; tkn = strtok (str," "); // get token 1 if (tkn != NULL) { printf("token1: "); while ((*tkn != 0) && (tkn != NULL)) { putchar(*tkn); array[i] = *tkn; *tkn++; i++; } } }

  • Loop with pointer arithmetic refuse to stay within boundary in C. Gives me segfault.

    - by Fred
    Hi have made this function which is made to replicate an error that I can't get past. It looks like this: void enumerate(double *c, int size){ while(c < &c[size]){ printf("%lf\n", *c); c++; } } I have added some printf's in there and it gives me: Adressof c: 0x100100080, Adressof c + size: 0x1001000a8 I then also print the address of c for each iteration of the loop, it reaches 0x1001000a8 but continues past this point even though the condition should be false as far as I can tell until I get a segfault. If anyone can spot the problem, please tell me, I have been staring at this for a while now. Thanks.

  • Performance issues in android game

    - by user1446632
    I am making an android game, but however, the game is functioning like it should, but i am experiencing some performance issues. I think it has something to do with the sound. Cause each time i touch the screen, it makes a sound. I am using the standard MediaPlayer. The method is onTouchEvent() and onPlaySound1(). Could you please help me with an alternate solution for playing the sound? Thank you so much in advance! It would be nice if you also came up with some suggestions on how i can improve my code. • C++ SDL State Machine Segfault

    - by user1602079
    The code compiles and builds fine, but it immediately segfaults. I've looked at this for a while and have no idea why. Any help is appreciated. Thank you! Here's the code: main.cpp #include "SDL/SDL.h" #include "Globals.h" #include "Core.h" #include "GameStates.h" #include "Introduction.h" int main(int argc, char** args) { if(core.Initilize() == false) { SDL_Quit(); } while(core.desiredstate != core.Quit) { currentstate->EventHandling(); currentstate->Logic(); core.ChangeState(); currentstate->Render(); currentstate->Update(); } SDL_Quit(); } Core.h #ifndef CORE_H #define CORE_H #include "SDL/SDL.h" #include <string> class Core { public: SDL_Surface* Load(std::string filename); void ApplySurface(int X, int Y, SDL_Surface* source, SDL_Surface* destination); void SetState(int newstate); void ChangeState(); enum state { Intro, STATES_NULL, Quit }; int desiredstate, stateID; bool Initilize(); }; #endif Core.cpp #include "Core.h" #include "SDL/SDL.h" #include "Globals.h" #include "Introduction.h" #include <string> /* Initilizes SDL subsystems */ bool Core::Initilize() { //Inits subsystems, reutrns false upon error if(SDL_Init(SDL_INIT_EVERYTHING) == -1) { return false; } SDL_WM_SetCaption("Game", NULL); return true; } /* Loads surfaces and optimizes them */ SDL_Surface* Core::Load(std::string filename) { //The surface to be optimized SDL_Surface* original = SDL_LoadBMP(filename.c_str()); //The optimized surface SDL_Surface* optimized = NULL; //Optimizes the image if it loaded properly if(original != NULL) { optimized = SDL_DisplayFormat(original); SDL_FreeSurface(original); } else { //returns NULL upon error return NULL; } return optimized; } /* Blits surfaces */ void Core::ApplySurface(int X, int Y, SDL_Surface* source, SDL_Surface* destination) { //Stores the coordinates of the surface SDL_Rect offsets; offsets.x = X; offsets.y = Y; //Bits the surface if both surfaces are present if(source != NULL && destination != NULL) { SDL_BlitSurface(source, NULL, destination, &offsets); } } /* Sets desiredstate to newstate */ void Core::SetState(int newstate) { if(desiredstate != Quit) { desiredstate = newstate; } } /* Changes the game state */ void Core::ChangeState() { if(desiredstate != STATES_NULL && desiredstate != Quit) { delete currentstate; switch(desiredstate) { case Intro: currentstate = new Introduction(); break; } stateID = desiredstate; desiredstate = core.STATES_NULL; } } Globals.h #ifndef GLOBALS_H #define GLOBALS_H #include "SDL/SDL.h" #include "Core.h" #include "GameStates.h" extern SDL_Surface* screen; extern Core core; extern GameStates* currentstate; #endif Globals.cpp #include "Globals.h" #include "SDL/SDL.h" #include "GameStates.h" SDL_Surface* screen = SDL_SetVideoMode(640, 480, 32, SDL_SWSURFACE); Core core; GameStates* currentstate = NULL; GameStates.h #ifndef GAMESTATES_H #define GAMESTATES_H class GameStates { public: virtual void EventHandling() = 0; virtual void Logic() = 0; virtual void Render() = 0; virtual void Update() = 0; }; #endif Introduction.h #ifndef INTRODUCTION_H #define INTRODUCTION_H #include "GameStates.h" #include "Globals.h" class Introduction : public GameStates { public: Introduction(); private: void EventHandling(); void Logic(); void Render(); void Update(); ~Introduction(); SDL_Surface* test; }; #endif Introduction.cpp #include "SDL/SDL.h" #include "Core.h" #include "Globals.h" #include "Introduction.h" /* Loads all the assets */ Introduction::Introduction() { test = core.Load("test.bmp"); } void Introduction::EventHandling() { SDL_Event event; while(SDL_PollEvent(&event)) { switch(event.type) { case SDL_QUIT: core.SetState(core.Quit); break; } } } void Introduction::Logic() { //to be coded } void Introduction::Render() { core.ApplySurface(30, 30, test, screen); } void Introduction::Update() { SDL_Flip(screen); } Introduction::~Introduction() { SDL_FreeSurface(test); } Sorry if the formatting is a bit off... I ran it through gdb and this is what I got: Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. 0x0000000000400e46 in main () Which isn't incredibly useful... Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

  • Can I make a pointer to the code, and pass to the next instruction?

    - by drigoSkalWalker
    Like this link http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc-3.3.1/gcc/Labels-as-Values.html I can get the memory address of an label, so if I declare a label, get your address, and add your address, i will pass to next instruction? some ilustration int main () { void *ptr; label: instruction 1; instruction 2; ptr = &&label; // So if I do it... ptr = ptr + 1; // I will get the instruction 2 correct?? Thanks for all answers.

  • Detecting Process Shutdown/Startup Events through ActivationAgents

    - by Ramkumar Menon
    @10g - This post is motivated by one of my close friends and colleague - who wanted to proactively know when a BPEL process shuts down/re-activates. This typically happens when you have a BPEL Process that has an inbound polling adapter, when the adapter loses connectivity to the source system. Or whatever causes it. One valuable suggestion came in from one of my colleagues - he suggested I write my own ActivationAgent to do the job. Well, it really worked. Here is a sample ActivationAgent that you can use. There are few methods you need to override from BaseActivationAgent, and you are on your way to receiving notifications/what not, whenever the shutdown/startup events occur. In the example below, I am retrieving the emailAddress property [that is specified in your bpel.xml activationAgent section] and use that to send out an email notification on the activation agent initialization. You could choose to do different things. But bottomline is that you can use the below-mentioned API to access the very same properties that you specify in the bpel.xml. package com.adapter.custom.activation; import com.collaxa.cube.activation.BaseActivationAgent; import com.collaxa.cube.engine.ICubeContext; import com.oracle.bpel.client.BPELProcessId; import java.util.Date; import java.util.Properties; public class LifecycleManagerActivationAgent extends BaseActivationAgent { public BPELProcessId getBPELProcessId() { return super.getBPELProcessId(); } private void handleInit() throws Exception { //Write initialization code here System.err.println("Entered initialization code...."); //e.g. String emailAddress = getActivationAgentDescriptor().getPropertyValue(emailAddress); //send an email sendEmail(emailAddress); } private void handleLoad() throws Exception { //Write load code here System.err.println("Entered load code...."); } private void handleUnload() throws Exception { //Write unload code here System.err.println("Entered unload code...."); } private void handleUninit() throws Exception { //Write uninitialization code here System.err.println("Entered uninitialization code...."); } public void init(ICubeContext icubecontext) throws Exception { super.init(icubecontext); System.err.println("Initializing LifecycleManager Activation Agent ....."); handleInit(); } public void unload(ICubeContext icubecontext) throws Exception { super.unload(icubecontext); System.err.println("Unloading LifecycleManager Activation Agent ....."); handleUnload(); } public void uninit(ICubeContext icubecontext) throws Exception{ super.uninit(icubecontext); System.err.println("Uninitializing LifecycleManager Activation Agent ....."); handleUninit(); } public String getName() { return "Lifecyclemanageractivationagent"; } public void onStateChanged(int i, ICubeContext iCubeContext) { } public void onLifeCycleChanged(int i, ICubeContext iCubeContext) { } public void onUndeployed(ICubeContext iCubeContext) { } public void onServerShutdown() { } } Once you compile this code, generate a jar file and ensure you add it to the server startup classpath. The library is ready for use after the server restarts. To use this activationAgent, add an additional activationAgent entry in the bpel.xml for the BPEL Process that you wish to monitor. After you deploy the process, the ActivationAgent object will be called back whenever the events mentioned in the overridden methods are raised. [init(), load(), unload(), uninit()]. Subsequently, your custom code is executed. Sample bpel.xml illustrating activationAgent definition and property definition. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"? <BPELSuitcase timestamp="1291943469921" revision="1.0" <BPELProcess wsdlPort="{http://xmlns.oracle.com/BPELTest}BPELTestPort" src="BPELTest.bpel" wsdlService="{http://xmlns.oracle.com/BPELTest}BPELTest" id="BPELTest" <partnerLinkBindings <partnerLinkBinding name="client" <property name="wsdlLocation"BPELTest.wsdl</property </partnerLinkBinding <partnerLinkBinding name="test" <property name="wsdlLocation"test.wsdl</property </partnerLinkBinding </partnerLinkBindings <activationAgents <activationAgent className="oracle.tip.adapter.fw.agent.jca.JCAActivationAgent" partnerLink="test" <property name="portType"Read_ptt</property </activationAgent <activationAgent className="com.oracle.bpel.activation.LifecycleManagerActivationAgent" partnerLink="test" <property name="emailAddress"[email protected]</property </activationAgent </activationAgents </BPELProcess </BPELSuitcase em

This is the class with the mouse listeners in it: public void mousePressed(MouseEvent e) { if (e.getButton() == MouseEvent.BUTTON1) { Comp.ml = true; // placing if (manager.title == true) { if (title.r.contains(Comp.mx, Comp.my)) { title.overview = true; } else if (title.r1.contains(Comp.mx, Comp.my)) { title.options = true; } else if (title.r2.contains(Comp.mx, Comp.my)) { System.exit(0); } } if (manager.option == true) { optionsMouse(e); } mouseinventory(e); } else if (e.getButton() == MouseEvent.BUTTON3) { Comp.mr = true; } } private void mouseinventory(MouseEvent e) { if (e.getButton() == MouseEvent.BUTTON1) { } else if (e.getButton() == MouseEvent.BUTTON1) { } } @Override public void mouseReleased(MouseEvent e) { if (e.getButton() == MouseEvent.BUTTON1) { Comp.ml = false; } else if (e.getButton() == MouseEvent.BUTTON3) { Comp.mr = false; } } @Override public void mouseDragged(MouseEvent e) { for(int i = 0; i < overview.im.ing.toArray().length; i ++){ if(overview.im.ing.get(i).r.contains(Comp.mx,Comp.my)){ overview.im.ing.get(i).newx = Comp.mx; overview.im.ing.get(i).newy = Comp.my; overview.im.ing.get(i).dragged = true; }else{ overview.im.ing.get(i).dragged = false; } } } @Override public void mouseMoved(MouseEvent e) { Comp.mx = e.getX(); Comp.my = e.getY(); // System.out.println("" + Comp.my); } This is the class called ingredient public abstract class Ingrediant { public int x,y,id,lastx,lasty,newx,newy; public boolean removed = false,dragged = false; public int width; public int height; public Rectangle r = new Rectangle(x,y,width,height); public Ingrediant(){ r = new Rectangle(x,y,width,height); } public abstract void tick(); public abstract void render(Graphics g); } and this is a class which extends ingredient called hagleave public class HagLeave extends Ingrediant { private Image img; public HagLeave(int x, int y, int id) { this.x = x; this.y = y; this.newx = x; this.newy = y; this.id = id; width = 75; height = 75; r = new Rectangle(x,y,width,height); } public void tick() { r = new Rectangle(x,y,width,height); if(!dragged){ x = newx; y = newy; } } public void render(Graphics g) { ImageIcon i2 = new ImageIcon("res/ingrediants/hagleave.png"); img = i2.getImage(); g.drawImage(img, x, y, null); g.setColor(Color.red); g.drawRect(r.x, r.y, r.width, r.height); } } The arraylist is in a class called ingrediantManager: public class IngrediantsManager { public ArrayList<Ingrediant> ing = new ArrayList<Ingrediant>(); public IngrediantsManager(){ ing.add(new HagLeave(100,200,1)); ing.add(new PigHair(70,300,2)); ing.add(new GiantsToe(100,400,3)); } public void tick(){ for(int i = 0; i < ing.toArray().length; i ++){ ing.get(i).tick(); if(ing.get(i).removed){ ing.remove(i); i--; } } } public void render(Graphics g){ for(int i = 0; i < ing.toArray().length; i ++){ ing.get(i).render(g); } } }

  • IEnumerable<T> ToArray usage, is it a copy or a pointer?

    - by Daniel
    I am parsing an arbitrary length byte array that is going to be passed around to a few different layers of parsing. Each parser creates a Header and a Packet payload just like any ordinary encapsulation. And my problem lies in how the encapsulation holds its packet byte array payload. Say i have a 100 byte array, and it has 3 levels of encapsulation. 3 packet objects will be created and i want to set the payload of these packets to the corresponding position in the byte array of the packet. For example lets say the payload size is 20 for all levels, then imagine it has a public byte[] Payload on each object. However the problem is that this byte[] Payload is a copy of the original 100 bytes. So i'm going to end up with 160 bytes in memory instead of 100. If it were in c++ i could just easily use a pointer however i'm writing this in c#. So i created the following class: public class PayloadSegment<T> : IEnumerable<T> { public readonly T[] Array; public readonly int Offset; public readonly int Count; public PayloadSegment(T[] array, int offset, int count) { this.Array = array; this.Offset = offset; this.Count = count; } public T this[int index] { get { if (index < 0 || index >= this.Count) throw new IndexOutOfRangeException(); else return Array[Offset + index]; } set { if (index < 0 || index >= this.Count) throw new IndexOutOfRangeException(); else Array[Offset + index] = value; } } public IEnumerator<T> GetEnumerator() { for (int i = Offset; i < Offset + Count; i++) yield return Array[i]; } System.Collections.IEnumerator System.Collections.IEnumerable.GetEnumerator() { IEnumerator<T> enumerator = this.GetEnumerator(); while (enumerator.MoveNext()) { yield return enumerator.Current; } } } This way i can simply reference a position inside the original byte array but use positional indexing. However if i do something like: PayloadSegment<byte> something = new PayloadSegment<byte>(someArray, 5, 10); byte[] somethingArray = something.ToArray(); Will the somethingArray be a copy of the bytes, or a reference to the original PayloadSegment which in turn is a reference to the original byte array? Sorry it was hard to word this lol _<

  • How do you return a pointer to a base class with a virtual function?

    - by Nick Sweet
    I have a base class called Element, a derived class called Vector, and I'm trying to redefine two virtual functions from Element in Vector. //element.h template <class T> class Element { public: Element(); virtual Element& plus(const Element&); virtual Element& minus(const Element&); }; and in another file //Vector.h #include "Element.h" template <class T> class Vector: public Element<T> { T x, y, z; public: //constructors Vector(); Vector(const T& x, const T& y = 0, const T& z =0); Vector(const Vector& u); ... //operations Element<T>& plus(const Element<T>& v) const; Element<T>& minus(const Element<T>& v) const; ... }; //sum template <class T> Element<T>& Vector<T>::plus(const Element<T>& v) const { Element<T>* ret = new Vector((x + v.x), (y + v.y), (z + v.z)); return *ret; } //difference template <class T> Element<T>& Vector<T>::minus(const Element<T>& v) const { Vector<T>* ret = new Vector((x - v.x), (y - v.y), (z - v.z)); return *ret; } but I always get error: 'const class Element' has no member named 'getx' So, can I define my virtual functions to take Vector& as an argument instead, or is there a way for me to access the data members of Vector through a pointer to Element? I'm still fairly new to inheritance polymorphism, fyi.

  • Segfault when iterating over a map<string, string> and drawing its contents using SDL_TTF

    - by Michael Stahre
    I'm not entirely sure this question belongs on gamedev.stackexchange, but I'm technically working on a game and working with SDL, so it might not be entirely offtopic. I've written a class called DebugText. The point of the class is to have a nice way of printing values of variables to the game screen. The idea is to call SetDebugText() with the variables in question every time they change or, as is currently the case, every time the game's Update() is called. The issue is that when iterating over the map that contains my variables and their latest updated values, I get segfaults. See the comments in DrawDebugText() below, it specifies where the error happens. I've tried splitting the calls to it-first and it-second into separate lines and found that the problem doesn't always happen when calling it-first. It alters between it-first and it-second. I can't find a pattern. It doesn't fail on every call to DrawDebugText() either. It might fail on the third time DrawDebugText() is called, or it might fail on the fourth. Class header: #ifndef CLIENT_DEBUGTEXT_H #define CLIENT_DEBUGTEXT_H #include <Map> #include <Math.h> #include <sstream> #include <SDL.h> #include <SDL_ttf.h> #include "vector2.h" using std::string; using std::stringstream; using std::map; using std::pair; using game::Vector2; namespace game { class DebugText { private: TTF_Font* debug_text_font; map<string, string>* debug_text_list; public: void SetDebugText(string var, bool value); void SetDebugText(string var, float value); void SetDebugText(string var, int value); void SetDebugText(string var, Vector2 value); void SetDebugText(string var, string value); int DrawDebugText(SDL_Surface*, SDL_Rect*); void InitDebugText(); void Clear(); }; } #endif Class source file: #include "debugtext.h" namespace game { // Copypasta function for handling the toString conversion template <class T> inline string to_string (const T& t) { stringstream ss (stringstream::in | stringstream::out); ss << t; return ss.str(); } // Initializes SDL_TTF and sets its font void DebugText::InitDebugText() { if(TTF_WasInit()) TTF_Quit(); TTF_Init(); debug_text_font = TTF_OpenFont("LiberationSans-Regular.ttf", 16); TTF_SetFontStyle(debug_text_font, TTF_STYLE_NORMAL); } // Iterates over the current debug_text_list and draws every element on the screen. // After drawing with SDL you need to get a rect specifying the area on the screen that was changed and tell SDL that this part of the screen needs to be updated. this is done in the game's Draw() function // This function sets rects_to_update to the new list of rects provided by all of the surfaces and returns the number of rects in the list. These two parameters are used in Draw() when calling on SDL_UpdateRects(), which takes an SDL_Rect* and a list length int DebugText::DrawDebugText(SDL_Surface* screen, SDL_Rect* rects_to_update) { if(debug_text_list == NULL) return 0; if(!TTF_WasInit()) InitDebugText(); rects_to_update = NULL; // Specifying the font color SDL_Color font_color = {0xff, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00}; // r, g, b, unused int row_count = 0; string line; // The iterator variable map<string, string>::iterator it; // Gets the iterator and iterates over it for(it = debug_text_list->begin(); it != debug_text_list->end(); it++) { // Takes the first value (the name of the variable) and the second value (the value of the parameter in string form) //---------THIS LINE GIVES ME SEGFAULTS----- line = it->first + ": " + it->second; //------------------------------------------ // Creates a surface with the text on it that in turn can be rendered to the screen itself later SDL_Surface* debug_surface = TTF_RenderText_Solid(debug_text_font, line.c_str(), font_color); if(debug_surface == NULL) { // A standard check for errors fprintf(stderr, "Error: %s", TTF_GetError()); return NULL; } else { // If SDL_TTF did its job right, then we now set a destination rect row_count++; SDL_Rect dstrect = {5, 5, 0, 0}; // x, y, w, h dstrect.x = 20; dstrect.y = 20*row_count; // Draws the surface with the text on it to the screen int res = SDL_BlitSurface(debug_surface,NULL,screen,&dstrect); if(res != 0) { //Just an error check fprintf(stderr, "Error: %s", SDL_GetError()); return NULL; } // Creates a new rect to specify the area that needs to be updated with SDL_Rect* new_rect_to_update = (SDL_Rect*) malloc(sizeof(SDL_Rect)); new_rect_to_update->h = debug_surface->h; new_rect_to_update->w = debug_surface->w; new_rect_to_update->x = dstrect.x; new_rect_to_update->y = dstrect.y; // Just freeing the surface since it isn't necessary anymore SDL_FreeSurface(debug_surface); // Creates a new list of rects with room for the new rect SDL_Rect* newtemp = (SDL_Rect*) malloc(row_count*sizeof(SDL_Rect)); // Copies the data from the old list of rects to the new one memcpy(newtemp, rects_to_update, (row_count-1)*sizeof(SDL_Rect)); // Adds the new rect to the new list newtemp[row_count-1] = *new_rect_to_update; // Frees the memory used by the old list free(rects_to_update); // And finally redirects the pointer to the old list to the new list rects_to_update = newtemp; newtemp = NULL; } } // When the entire map has been iterated over, return the number of lines that were drawn, ie. the number of rects in the returned rect list return row_count; } // The SetDebugText used by all the SetDebugText overloads // Takes two strings, inserts them into the map as a pair void DebugText::SetDebugText(string var, string value) { if (debug_text_list == NULL) { debug_text_list = new map<string, string>(); } debug_text_list->erase(var); debug_text_list->insert(pair<string, string>(var, value)); } // Writes the bool to a string and calls SetDebugText(string, string) void DebugText::SetDebugText(string var, bool value) { string result; if (value) result = "True"; else result = "False"; SetDebugText(var, result); } // Does the same thing, but uses to_string() to convert the float void DebugText::SetDebugText(string var, float value) { SetDebugText(var, to_string(value)); } // Same as above, but int void DebugText::SetDebugText(string var, int value) { SetDebugText(var, to_string(value)); } // Vector2 is a struct of my own making. • OData &ndash; The easiest service I can create: now with updates

    - by Jon Dalberg
    The other day I created a simple NastyWord service exposed via OData. It was read-only and used an in-memory backing store for the words. Today I’ll modify it to use a file instead of a list and I’ll accept new nasty words by implementing IUpdatable directly. The first thing to do is enable the service to accept new entries. This is done at configuration time by adding the “WriteAppend” access rule: 1: public class NastyWords : DataService<NastyWordsDataSource> 2: { 3: // This method is called only once to initialize service-wide policies. 4: public static void InitializeService(DataServiceConfiguration config) 5: { 6: config.SetEntitySetAccessRule("*", EntitySetRights.AllRead | EntitySetRights.WriteAppend); 7: config.DataServiceBehavior.MaxProtocolVersion = DataServiceProtocolVersion.V2; 8: } 9: }   Next I placed a file, NastyWords.txt, in the “App_Data” folder and added a few *choice* words to start. This required one simple change to our NastyWordDataSource.cs file: 1: public NastyWordsDataSource() 2: { 3: UpdateFromSource(); 4: } 5:   6: private void UpdateFromSource() 7: { 8: var words = File.ReadAllLines(pathToFile); 9: NastyWords = (from w in words 10: select new NastyWord { Word = w }).AsQueryable(); 11: }   Nothing too shocking here, just reading each line from the NastyWords.txt file and exposing them. Next, I implemented IUpdatable which comes with a boat-load of methods. We don’t need all of them for now since we are only concerned with allowing new values. Here are the methods we must implement, all the others throw a NotImplementedException: 1: public object CreateResource(string containerName, string fullTypeName) 2: { 3: var nastyWord = new NastyWord(); 4: pendingUpdates.Add(nastyWord); 5: return nastyWord; 6: } 7:   8: public object ResolveResource(object resource) 9: { 10: return resource; 11: } 12:   13: public void SaveChanges() 14: { 15: var intersect = (from w in pendingUpdates 16: select w.Word).Intersect(from n in NastyWords 17: select n.Word); 18:   19: if (intersect.Count() > 0) 20: throw new DataServiceException(500, "duplicate entry"); 21:   22: var lines = from w in pendingUpdates 23: select w.Word; 24:   25: File.AppendAllLines(pathToFile, 26: lines, 27: Encoding.UTF8); 28:   29: pendingUpdates.Clear(); 30:   31: UpdateFromSource(); 32: } 33:   34: public void SetValue(object targetResource, string propertyName, object propertyValue) 35: { 36: targetResource.GetType().GetProperty(propertyName).SetValue(targetResource, propertyValue, null); 37: }   I use a simple list to contain the pending updates and only commit them when the “SaveChanges” method is called. Here’s the order these methods are called in our service during an insert: CreateResource – here we just instantiate a new NastyWord and stick a reference to it in our pending updates list. SetValue – this is where the “Word” property of the NastyWord instance is set. SaveChanges – get the list of pending updates, barfing on duplicates, write them to the file and clear our pending list. ResolveResource – the newly created resource will be returned directly here since we aren’t dealing with “handles” to objects but the actual objects themselves. Not too bad, eh? I didn’t find this documented anywhere but a little bit of digging in the OData spec and use of Fiddler made it pretty easy to figure out. Here is some client code which would add a new nasty word: 1: static void Main(string[] args) 2: { 3: var svc = new ServiceReference1.NastyWordsDataSource(new Uri("http://localhost.:60921/NastyWords.svc")); 4: svc.AddToNastyWords(new ServiceReference1.NastyWord() { Word = "shat" }); 5:   6: svc.SaveChanges(); 7: }   Here’s all of the code so far for to implement the service: 1: using System; 2: using System.Collections.Generic; 3: using System.Data.Services; 4: using System.Data.Services.Common; 5: using System.Linq; 6: using System.ServiceModel.Web; 7: using System.Web; 8: using System.IO; 9: using System.Text; 10:   11: namespace ONasty 12: { 13: [DataServiceKey("Word")] 14: public class NastyWord 15: { 16: public string Word { get; set; } 17: } 18:   19: public class NastyWordsDataSource : IUpdatable 20: { 21: private List<NastyWord> pendingUpdates = new List<NastyWord>(); 22: private string pathToFile = @"path to your\App_Data\NastyWords.txt"; 23:   24: public NastyWordsDataSource() 25: { 26: UpdateFromSource(); 27: } 28:   29: private void UpdateFromSource() 30: { 31: var words = File.ReadAllLines(pathToFile); 32: NastyWords = (from w in words 33: select new NastyWord { Word = w }).AsQueryable(); 34: } 35:   36: public IQueryable<NastyWord> NastyWords { get; private set; } 37:   38: public void AddReferenceToCollection(object targetResource, string propertyName, object resourceToBeAdded) 39: { 40: throw new NotImplementedException(); 41: } 42:   43: public void ClearChanges() 44: { 45: pendingUpdates.Clear(); 46: } 47:   48: public object CreateResource(string containerName, string fullTypeName) 49: { 50: var nastyWord = new NastyWord(); 51: pendingUpdates.Add(nastyWord); 52: return nastyWord; 53: } 54:   55: public void DeleteResource(object targetResource) 56: { 57: throw new NotImplementedException(); 58: } 59:   60: public object GetResource(IQueryable query, string fullTypeName) 61: { 62: throw new NotImplementedException(); 63: } 64:   65: public object GetValue(object targetResource, string propertyName) 66: { 67: throw new NotImplementedException(); 68: } 69:   70: public void RemoveReferenceFromCollection(object targetResource, string propertyName, object resourceToBeRemoved) 71: { 72: throw new NotImplementedException(); 73: } 74:   75: public object ResetResource(object resource) 76: { 77: throw new NotImplementedException(); 78: } 79:   80: public object ResolveResource(object resource) 81: { 82: return resource; 83: } 84:   85: public void SaveChanges() 86: { 87: var intersect = (from w in pendingUpdates 88: select w.Word).Intersect(from n in NastyWords 89: select n.Word); 90:   91: if (intersect.Count() > 0) 92: throw new DataServiceException(500, "duplicate entry"); 93:   94: var lines = from w in pendingUpdates 95: select w.Word; 96:   97: File.AppendAllLines(pathToFile, 98: lines, 99: Encoding.UTF8); 100:   101: pendingUpdates.Clear(); 102:   103: UpdateFromSource(); 104: } 105:   106: public void SetReference(object targetResource, string propertyName, object propertyValue) 107: { 108: throw new NotImplementedException(); 109: } 110:   111: public void SetValue(object targetResource, string propertyName, object propertyValue) 112: { 113: targetResource.GetType().GetProperty(propertyName).SetValue(targetResource, propertyValue, null); 114: } 115: } 116:   117: public class NastyWords : DataService<NastyWordsDataSource> 118: { 119: // This method is called only once to initialize service-wide policies. 120: public static void InitializeService(DataServiceConfiguration config) 121: { 122: config.SetEntitySetAccessRule("*", EntitySetRights.AllRead | EntitySetRights.WriteAppend); 123: config.DataServiceBehavior.MaxProtocolVersion = DataServiceProtocolVersion.V2; 124: } 125: } 126: } Next time we’ll allow removing nasty words.   • How to create a generic C free function .

    - by nomemory
    I have some C structures related to a 'list' data structure. They look like this. struct nmlist_element_s { void *data; struct nmlist_element_s *next; }; typedef struct nmlist_element_s nmlist_element; struct nmlist_s { void (*destructor)(void *data); int (*cmp)(const void *e1, const void *e2); unsigned int size; nmlist_element *head; nmlist_element *tail; }; typedef struct nmlist_s nmlist; This way I can have different data types being hold in "nmlist_element-data" . The "constructor" (in terms of OOP) has the following signature: nmlist *nmlist_alloc(void (*destructor)(void *data)); Where "destructor" is specific function that de-allocated "data" (being hold by the nmlist_element). If I want to have a list containing integers as data, my "destructor" would like this: void int_destructor(void *data) { free((int*)data); } Still i find it rather "unfriendly" for me to write a destructor functions for every simple primitive data type. So is there a trick to write something like this ? (for primitives): void "x"_destructor(void *data, "x") { free(("x" *)data); } PS: I am not a macro fan myself, and in my short experience regarding C, i don't use them, unless necessary.

  • Does it ever make sense to make a fundamental (non-pointer) parameter const?

    - by Scott Smith
    I recently had an exchange with another C++ developer about the following use of const: void Foo(const int bar); He felt that using const in this way was good practice. I argued that it does nothing for the caller of the function (since a copy of the argument was going to be passed, there is no additional guarantee of safety with regard to overwrite). In addition, doing this prevents the implementer of Foo from modifying their private copy of the argument. So, it both mandates and advertises an implementation detail. Not the end of the world, but certainly not something to be recommended as good practice. I'm curious as to what others think on this issue. Edit: OK, I didn't realize that const-ness of the arguments didn't factor into the signature of the function. So, it is possible to mark the arguments as const in the implementation (.cpp), and not in the header (.h) - and the compiler is fine with that. That being the case, I guess the policy should be the same for making local variables const. One could make the argument that having different looking signatures in the header and source file would confuse others (as it would have confused me). While I try to follow the Principle of Least Astonishment with whatever I write, I guess it's reasonable to expect developers to recognize this as legal and useful.

  • Const_cast on a this pointer - would I get told off by other C++ coders for doing this?

    - by BeeBand
    I have a class Game e.g. class Game { public: InitObjects(); ... }; And I have another class Grid, that needs to be initialised with a non-const reference to that Game object. ( A Grid object needs to call functions that can update a Game object ). class Grid { public: Grid(Game & g): game(g){} ... private: Game & game; ... }; The Game object is responsible for initialising the Grid. I did this: void Game::InitObjects() { grid = new Grid(*(const_cast<Game*>(this)) ); } grid is not a member of a Game - it's a global ( argh - i know... I don't mind making it a member, but I have the same problem right? ). Can some seasoned C++ folk tell me if this odd looking const_cast is acceptable?

    Hi2All.. I have some null struct, for example: struct null_type { NullType& someNonVirtualMethod() { return *this; } }; And in some function i need to pass reference to this type. Reason: template <typename T1 = null_type, typename T2 = null_type, ... > class LooksLikeATupleButItsNotATuple { public: LooksLikeATupleButItsNotATuple(T1& ref1 = defParamHere, T2& ref2 = andHere..) : _ref1(ref1), _ref2(ref2), ... { } void someCompositeFunctionHere() { _ref1.someNonVirtualMethod(); _ref2.someNonVirtualMethod(); ... } private: T1& _ref1; T2& _ref2; ...; }; It is a good practice to use null reference as a default parameter?: *static_cast<NullType*>(0) It works on MSVC, but i have some doubts...

So excuse any "ugly-ish" unclean code. This was made just on a fly run through when I was trying new test cases.
