  • Why is my wireless so slow compared to my wired download speed?

    I just used speedtest.net (using Firefox) to compare my wired connection speed with my wireless connection speed. With my current contract (with Videotron), I'm supposed to get Download speed: 8Mbps Upload speed: 1Mbps Here are the results of the speedtest.net test: Wired Ping: 14ms Download speed: 8.41Mbps Upload speed: 1.04Mbps Wireless Ping: 16ms Download speed: 0.18Mbps Upload speed: 0.98Mbps The difference in download speeds seems staggering to me since I did the test 1 meter aways from my router. Any clue as to why my wireless download speed is so low compared to my wired download speed? using Ubuntu 11.04 on an Acer Aspire 5536-5519 Oh and it might be worth mentioning that my girlfriend has no trouble at all with her wireless connection. No slowness at all. (She uses Firefox on Windows 7 on a Dell) Here's the results for the same test on her system: Ping: 22ms Download speed; 8.44Mbps Upload speed: 1.02Mbps

  • Switch to switch encryption over a wireless bridge (TrustSec?)

    I am planning to connect an existing Cisco 3750 switch to a 3560C switch over a wireless PTP bridge. The bridge will be WPA2 protected, but I am looking for an additional measure of security between the switches to prevent other wireless access through either switch. They do not support IPSec, only 802.1Q tunnels, and buying additional hardware is not likely an option. I am looking into using TrustSec manual mode between the switches. After some effort reading into TrustSec and MACsec, I am mostly certain this is a good choice over the wireless bridge, keeping in mind it is a shared medium. Two questions: Can I reliably prevent other wireless traffic from accessing the switches using TrustSec? Does anyone know of any better options with the 3000 series switches?

  • How can I use my Windows 7 computer to share WiFi connection with PCs that don't have wireless?

    Long story short: modem and wireless router are downstairs and we're having a LAN party where some visitors don't have wireless. There's no way to run the length of cabling required, so looking for options. My Windows 7 Home Premium PC has a wireless-n connection, and I'd like to see if I can use it as a "hub" or switch of sorts, running an ethernet cable out of the back and into a switch, then splitting off to the other PCs. Is this an option? I know with Internet sharing, you can set up your PC as a wireless access point, but I want to do the opposite.

It seems that my connection with my wireless network keeps going in and out.   • How do I toggle the wifi hardware switch for a Dell XPS 17 L702X?

    Every now and then, I disable my wireless via the menu icon in Ubuntu. Then, when I try to enable the wifi, it tells me that "wireless is disabled" or "wireless is disabled by hardware switch". There is a red icon on the F2 key that looks like a wireless icon, and in Windows, pressing the (red) Fn key and F2 toggles the wifi. This does not work in Ubuntu, leaving me no clear way to turn wifi back on. How can I restart wifi in Ubuntu?

    I have been trying for awhile since I removed Win8 from my laptop to get this Bluetooth/Wireless Card working and I've got it so that it at least recognizes wireless, but every time I try to actually use the wireless, I get kernel panics or everything crashes.     Based on the example of Rastrigin's function. At the plot function, if I chose 'best fitness', on the same graph 'mean fitness' will also be plotted. I understand well about 'best fitness' whereby it plots the best function value in each generation versus iteration number. It will reach value zero after some times. I don't understand about 'mean fitness'in the graph plotted. What do those 'mean fitness' values mean? How does the 'mean fitness' graph help to understand Rastrigin's function? What are the meaning of the term initial population, initial score and initial range? I wish to have a better understanding of these terms. The default value for initial range is [0,1]. Does it mean that 0 is the lower bound (lb) and 1 is the upper bound (ub)? Do these values interfere with the lb and ub values I set in the constraints? I try to better understand about lb and ub. If my lb is 0 and ub is 5, does it mean that my final point values will be within 0 and 5? If I know the lb and ub for my problem is between 0 and 5, do I just set the initial range as [0,5] at all times and may I assume that this is the best option for initial range, and I need not try it with any other values?

  • Why wont Ubuntu recognize Rogers LTE Rocket stick 330U Sierra wireless modem?

    I tried to plug the rocket stick into the USB slot, and Ubuntu does not recognize that there is anything in the drive. I plug in a standard USB thumbdrive and it is recognized right away. Are there any applications to help me open the rogers folders to see the files, and maybe connect to the Internet using said rocket stick 330U? I've been searching for this answer for almost a week now, seems no one knows how to get the net using this piece of technology.

  • Why is my wireless significantly slower on Ubuntu 12.04, as compared to windows 7?

    I'm dual booting 12.04, and Win7. Just a tiny bit of background, I'm starting to get more and more interested in programming and 3d modelling, so I'd like to learn more about ubuntu as a result of those interests. Still a complete newb though! Anyway, When downloading on windows, I get 1.5mb/s easy. Now I swap over to Ubuntu, and it hasn't topped 150 kb/s since I installed it some 6 months ago. I'd downloaded most of my programs on windows, so I never really noticed it, but as I'm committing to ubuntu more, it's starting to hinder me. I'm with Shaw, on their Highspeed 20, which gives me 20 mbps down, and 6mbps up. Speedtest.com shows me varying figures somewhat close to what shaw says they give on both windows and ubuntu, which is to be expected, given that it is shaw afterall... So, I don't know what you guys need to know, and I know even less about how to get it to you. Whatever information you guys need, tell me how to get it, how to get it up here, and i'll get it on here! I thought it might be that I'm using a proprietary driver, when an open sourced one would work better? But I really have no clue. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks guys!

  • Wireless will not connect on an Asus U56? [closed]

    I have an ASUS U56. I could connect to internet without delay or problems in Ubuntu 11.04. Now, running Ubuntu 11.10, I have not been able to connect. I can see the network and the computer tries to connect, but never makes the connection. I have been trying to fix this problem since the release date of 11.10. I had to install the older kernel 2.6 to get the wifi to work.   • Wireless very slow. Changed mode from Infracstructure to Ad-hoc

    This is my first time using Linux so go easy on me :) I downloaded and installed Mint 11 couple of days ago and I was having trouble connecting to internet with wifi. Actually it says it connects but does not load any webpages. I tried to get help from this model of laptop owners (Asus G73SW) who uses mostly Ubuntu but they said they never had any problem right from install. So I decided to try out Ubuntu 11.04. Same thing. BUT now I get internet after going into Network Connection edit and changing the Mode from Infracstructure to Ad-Hoc. I get load pages but very slow. And if I'm not mistaken, as I was writing this paragraph, I might have been disconnected. However the wifi bar is full. Please help me this newb because I really want to keep using Ubuntu but I might just have to go back to W7 if nothing can be done. Thank you!

  • Unstable wireless connection on Ubuntu only (router config problem?)

    so I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 and I could connect to all Wi-Fi's that I've tried and it worked fine... Except for this router that I have at home. This connection seems to be unstable, it just randomly disconnects and reconnects. On the same machine I have Ubuntu 13.10 (same problem) and Windows 8 (no problem). Also there are no Wi-Fi problems when I connect with my Android phone. So I figured it must be some config issue. I tried tweaking some settings/restoring default on the router but I don't really know what I'm doing so, unsurprisingly, it didn't fix the problem.

  • How do I get the wireless card on a Lenovo S205 working?

    I tried to install 12.04, 13.04, and now 13.10 on the machine and followed all the instructions that made sense that I could find and still have not gotten wifi to work. It keeps it hard blocked for some reason, not sure why and not sure anyone out there either has figured it out because I would have found it on Google. When I boot from the formatted USB drive, I have WiFi and everything working, why doesn't work after the USB drive is removed? What driver is the USB/wubi or whatever using so that I can install it and have things working? I could have used wubi and installed Ubuntu like that, but I want to make this machine a fully dedicated Ubuntu machine. The laptop is a Lenovo S205 in case anyone can help. I really would like to use 12.04 or higher, i don't want to downgrade to an older version of Ubuntu if at all possible.

Are there any life-hack tricks to increase signal/range of my repeater without buying the new more powerful repeater? I've tried already to move my repeater closer to the ceiling or putting the aluminium foil underneath, but it didn't help.     I have router Draytek Vigor 2100VG at home almost in the center of it. The farthest point at my home is my balcony, ~12m from it. I have constant wifi signal range problems with some of my devices, but not with others. Notebook Lenovo W510 - no problems Nokia Home Music - always on 10m - no problems Sony PS3 - always on 7m - no problems Sony tablet S - problems around 6m Sony PSP - problems around 8m Sony PS Vita - problems around 8m Nokia E63 - problems around 8m I'm curious why my Notebook don't have any problems even on the balcony? I guess it has better hardware or uses more power for transmission. This information is really important when you want to buy new device/computer, so my real question is: Can device wifi range can somehow be found/suggested from official hardware technical specification? If not Is there some web page with wifi range reviews?

    Hi All, I have 2 wireless barcode scanners. I have created an application in C# which reads a barcode and sends data to a web service which then manipulates the data and do further processing. When I start aplication, it first tries to connect to web service and will proceed further only if connection succeded. The problem I am facing is, if I deploy the application through visual studio then it works fine and connects to web service. But if I just copy the contents (exe and config files) manually, then it gives error that unknown host name. Can someone please help me to understand how this connection works? Does it needs some special settings in scanner device which visual studio does automatically while deployment? Thanks and Cheers.

  • Changing internal home network ip address for connected devices

    I have a few computers at home. For each of the computers, I can see the internal home network ip address on any given device by typing in ifconfig in the terminal. If the device is connected to the home network via ethernet connection or via the built-in wireless connections in laptops, the internal ip address for each of the devices seems to be 192.168.0.X. However, when I connect one of the devices using an external usb modem wireless adapter, which connects to the home network through wireless, when I check the ip address via ifconfig, for some reason it gets assigned 192.168.42.X instead. Why are the ethernet and build in wireless connections getting 192.168.0.X, but the external usb wireless adapter gets 192.168.42.X? Most importantly, is it possible to force it to get an internal ip address of 192.168.0.X?

  • Slow Wireless Reconnect After Suspend - Broadcom 4312 with STA drivers

    I am using 10.10 with STA drivers, I reinstalled ubuntu because the b43 drivers were giving me a huge hassle along with some weird kernel issues. My wireless speed is fine, everything works well, except upon restart of computer and after taking the computer out of suspend. It takes about 30-45 seconds for the wireless to reconnect, and I think it is a driver issue (I clicked on the network manager at the top and for about 30 seconds there are no wireless networks listed.) I tried this advice already: http://lilserenity.wordpress.com/2007/10/31/fix-ubuntu-dropping-wireless-on-suspendhibernate-resume/ which basically says to change this: STOP_SERVICES="" to STOP_SERVICES="networking" in the file /etc/default/acpi-support This did not help anything. Something to note is that the issue does not occur when I am logging back in after already logging in once and logging out.

  • Wireless xbox360 pad connected with xboxdrv doesn't show in jstest

    So Lubuntu 13.04, 3.4.0. I'm trying to use my wireless xbox controller. I've installed xboxdrv. I have to run it with sudo, or I get USBController::USBController(): libusb_open() failed: LIBUSB_ERROR_ACCESS. If I connect the adapter, run the program, and then press the button on the gamepad to connect it, it never really connects - just flashes like it's searching. If I reboot, leaving the controller searching, and run the command again while it's searching after I boot up, the controller connects (the light becomes solid in one corner). Using pkill xboxdrv and then relaunching it doesn't work.
