  For a few days I've tried to wrap my head around the functional programming paradigm in Haskell. I've done this by reading tutorials and watching screencasts, but nothing really seems to stick. Now, in learning various imperative/OO languages (like C, Java, PHP), excercises have been a good way for me to go. But since I don't really know what Haskell is capable of and because there are many new concepts to utilize, I haven't known where to start. So, how did you learn Haskell? What made you really "break the ice"? Also, any good ideas for beginning excercises?

• Can I create a collection in Scala that uses different equals/hashCode/compare implementations?

  I'm looking for as simple way to create an identity set. I just want to be able to keep track of whether or not I've "seen" a particular object while traversing a graph. I can't use a regular Set because Set uses "==" (the equals method in Scala) to compare elements. What I want is a Set that uses "eq." Is there any way to create a Set in Scala that uses some application-specified method for testing equality rather than calling equals on the set elements? I looked for some kind of "wrapEquals" method that I could override but did not find it. I know that I could use Java's IdentityHashMap, but I'm looking for something more general-purpose. Another idea I had was to just wrap each set element in another object that implements equals in terms of eq, but it's wasteful to generate tons of new objects just to get a new equals implementation. • Writing datatable to database file, one record at a time in C#

  Hi! I want to write a C# program that will read a row from a datatable (named loadDT) and update a database file (named Forecasts.mdb). My datatable looks like this (each day's value is a number representing kilowatts usage forecast): Hour Day1 Day2 Day3 Day4 Day5 Day6 Day7 1 519 520 524 498 501 476 451 My database file looks like this: Day Hour KWForecast 1 1 519 2 1 520 3 1 524 ... and so on. Basically, I want to be able to read one row from the datatable, and then extrapolate that out to my database file, one record at a time. Each row from the datatable will result in seven records written to the database file. Any ideas on how to go about this? I can connect to my database, the connection string works, and I can update and delete from the database. I just can't wrap my head around how to do this one record at a time. • Django: Geocoding an address on form submission?

  Trying to wrap my head around django forms and the django way of doing things. I want to create a basic web form that allows a user to input an address and have that address geocoded and saved to a database. I created a Location model: class Location(models.Model): address = models.CharField(max_length=200) city = models.CharField(max_length=100) state = models.CharField(max_length=100, null=True) postal_code = models.CharField(max_length=100, null=True) country = models.CharField(max_length=100) latitude = models.DecimalField(max_digits=18, decimal_places=10, null=True) longitude = models.DecimalField(max_digits=18, decimal_places=10, null=True) And defined a form: class LocationForm(forms.ModelForm): class Meta: model = models.Location exclude = ('latitude','longitude') In my view I'm using form.save() to save the form. This works and saves an address to the database. I created a module to geocode an address. I'm not sure what the django way of doing things is, but I guess in my view, before I save the form, I need to geocode the address and set the lat and long. How do I set the latitude and longitude before saving?

• Tool used to retrieve code metrics in xUnit Test Patterns?

  I'm reading xUnit Test Patterns by Gerard Meszaros. On one of the pages he refers to some software metrics: While the need to wrap lines to keep them at 65 characters makes this code look even longer than it really is, it is still unnecessarily long. It contains 25 executable statements including initialized declarations, 6 lines of control statements, 4 in-line comments, and 2 lines to declare the test method—giving a total of 37 lines of unwrapped source code. Short of counting the statements to find these metrics, does anybody have any idea if he used a particular tool to calculate the metrics? (If you have any suggestions for tools that will count similar metrics, I'm looking for one that works on Java, Javascript and C++) Thanks!

• Approaches to wrapping access to functionality in .NET MVC?

  What are some different solutions to wrapping access to functionality within a .NET MVC application? For example, I have six tabs that represent different areas of the application and within area 1, there is the ability to add, edit, upload, whatever. I need a central way to say: Build some dictionary of what the user can do Wrap tabs, buttons, links, etc, validate the user can access this piece of functionality and show/hide appropriately. I know I can restrict access to actions via action filters and roles, but what about from the UI? Any help would be appreciated. I am sure I am not the only one who has needed to do this, thanks!

• Is this an UITableView -beginUpdates documentation error?

  I can't wrap my head around what they tried to say here in the docs for -beginUpdate: Call this method if you want subsequent insertions, deletion, and selection operations (for example, cellForRowAtIndexPath: and indexPathsForVisibleRows) to be animated simultaneously. Let's see... cellForRowAtIndexPath: and indexPathsForVisibleRows are both GETTER methods. They do not update anything and do not change anything. So why should I call -beginUpdates before calling these? And what's animated regarding these? Well, nothing, huh? Just want to make sure this is really an error in the docs and I didn't miss something.

• jCarousel not working properly within tabbed menu

  Hi everybody, I'm riding three different jCarousel ul, one in each target of a tabbed menu designeb by Yetii. The problem issue is that the one in the first target works well, whereas the remaining two show just a slice of the first picture and slide soon onto a back frame. The jCarousel is initialized by a class as the behaviour required is the same for all targets: jQuery(document).ready(function() { jQuery('.jcarousel-skin-tango').jcarousel({ wrap: 'circular', //size:8, scroll:1, animation:.10, auto:5, }); }); The ul have different id. • Working with the Grails g:timeZoneSelect tag?

  I am wanting to use the g:timeZoneSelect tag within my application, problem is im finding the resulting html select to be quite overwhelming. Over 600 options are being displayed, IMHO this is to much to display to the user. Maybe someone could point me to an example of a much more manageable list of timezones? Maybe you have seen a site that does timezone selection well? Im sure over 600 option is "technically" correct, but this will just look like noise to the user. The display value of the timezone is to long. E.g. "CST, Central Standard Time (South Australia/New South Wales) 9.5:30.0" Just "CST, Central Standard Time" or "Australia/Broken_Hill" would be better Is there a way to address these issues via tag attributes of some sort (cant find any in the docs) or config that I am unaware of? Or, is my best bet to wrap an html select within a custom tag lib and "roll my own" solution (Id prefer not to). Thanks

• Another question about ASP.NET MVC and a separate project for helper classes

  I know this topic has been discussed to death, but there is one thing that I can't wrap my head around. I'm working on a Web Application using ASP.NET MVC and I come across a scenario where I need a helper class (this usually happens in the early stages of development. So I go ahead and create a helper project in my solution that I use to manage all of my Helper Classes. Now, do I have to build that project and dump the dll in the bin directory every time I make changes to is, or is there a way to have the main web application reference the classes contained within the separate project without the separate build process? I'm just looking for the easiest way to add helper classes without the hastel of building and moving the dll every time I make a change or addition. Also, sorry for the very newbie-esque question here. All of the web apps I've build in the past have all been in the same project (web forms, App_Code, etc).

  I am experiencing some very odd timing behavior from a function I wrote. If I wrap my function inside another empty container function, it gets a 3x speedup. > tic; foo(args); toc time elapsed: ~140 seconds >tic; bar(args); toc time elapsed: ~35 seconds Here's the kicker - the definition of bar(): define bar(args) foo(args) end Is there some sort of optimization that gets triggered in MATLAB for nested function calls? Should I be adding a dummy function to every function that I write?

• Looking for a syntactic shortcut for accessing dictionaries

  I have an abstract base class that holds a Dictionary. I'd like inherited classes to be able to access the dictionary fields using a convenient syntax. Currently I have lots of code like this: string temp; int val; if (this.Fields.TryGetValue("Key", out temp)) { if (int.TryParse(temp, out val)) { // do something with val... } } Obviously I can wrap this in utility functions but I'd like to have a cool, convenient syntax for accessing the dictionary fields where I can simply say something like: int result = @Key; Is there any way to do something like this in C# (3.5)?

• How do I safely Debug.Assert in ASP.NET?

  Asserts can't be caught. This is good because some errors I don't want to be wrapped in try/catch, at least not on the development server. But Asserts seem awefully dangerous.   I have a client who wants his custom-written CRM to be able to access his sales people's emails so that, effectively, a history of email conversations between customer and salesperson is stored inside the CRM's database. The CRM is written in VB 2008 and the database is SQL Server 2008. The only email these people use, in the shop and on the road, is GMAIL. Each sales person has their own GMAIL address. Thats how they operate. If they're on the road and respond to a customer's email inquiry about a product, they would like that email conversation to be stored in a table in the database. I think thats the part I cant wrap my head around. How to get access to the email data (knowing the user id and password) and doing so from VB 2008

• jQuery programming style?

  I was recently asked to fix something on a site which I haven't worked on before. I haven't really worked with jQuery that much, but I figured I'd take a look and see if I could fix it. I've managed to mostly clear up the problem, but I'm still horrified at the way they chose to build this site. On document load, they replace the click() method of every anchor tag and form element with the same massive function. When clicked, that function then checks if the tag has one of a few different attributes (non-standard attributes, even), and does a variety of different tasks depending on what attributes exist and what their values are. Some hyperlinks have an attribute on them called 'ajaxrel', which makes the click() function look for another (hidden) hyperlink with an ID specified by the ajaxrel attribute, and then calls the click() function for that other hyperlink (which was also modified by this same click() function). On the server side, all the php files are quite long and have absolutely no indentation. This whole site has been a nightmare to debug. Is this standard jQuery practice? This navigation scheme seems terrible. Does anyone else actually use jQuery this way? I'd like to start incorporating it into my projects, but looking at this site is giving me a serious headache. • How do I layout a form in WPF using grid or other controls for maintainability

  I have a WPF form, I want to lay out a standard form onto it. Each form element will have a label, and then a control. Pretty standard stuff. If I use a wrap panel, it can cause the label and the control to be separated, but I want them to stay together. is there some WPF equivalent of nobr? Grid works, and allows for column spanning etc, however I really really hate that you specify the column and row on each control. This makes it extremely inconvenient to reorder or insert things into the list. Is there a way to get the grid to use more HTML style column/rows where the items are a child of the row they are in, so that I can re-order easily? Is there some other control that will let me layout a form easily?

It's hard to find any good examples except Silverlight control toolkit, which has some helper classes to do unit tests and it's quite complicated. For MVVM classes it's easy to write tests because they don't use SL dependency system and infrastructure. Questions: how to unit test DepedenyProperty, what do I need to test how to test attached property do I test bindings with theme or UserControl, like simple textblock content binding, or command/event binding in MVVM with UserControl what else do I test in my custom controls, beside my business logic any good tutorial to achieve tests like those in control toolkit How do I start? Is SL controls toolkit only option for learning? For testing framework i'm using one from control toolkit, and for continuus integration on TFS build server I planned to use Statlight (from codeplex). Any advice on that?

  I have inherited development of a Java/SWT application running on Windows only. One of the feature requests that I need to scope is a Google-chrome-type title bar in place of the SWT windows title bar. The application's tabs appear at the same level as the window control buttons. My understanding is that I will need to: write a Windows widget capable of rendering the custom look and managing tabs as opposed to menus. expose the Windows widget as a dll for use in Java via JNI write a custom SWT widget to wrap it and expose the tab management interface. I have a lot of experience with Java programming, GUI programming with Swing/AWT, and non-GUI C# programming. Windows GUI programming and SWT are new to me so I'm not sure where to start. The best I have found so far is a 2001 article on writing your own SWT widget. My biggest unknown is the best way to implement a custom Windows application-window.

  say i found a good open source software/library written in python. i want to wrap some of the functions or methods that i have created into easy to understand language of my own. do porter_stemm(DOC) (the DSL) would be equivalent to the function or series of methods written in python. i want to create a DSL that is easy to learn, but need this DSL translated into the original open source software software. im not sure if i am clear here but my intention is: create an easy to learn code language that users can use to solve a problem in a certain niche. this simple language needs to be translated or compiled or interpretated via some middleware into the original open source software's language (python).

  I've a web server and a separate SQL server. I'm trying to use transaction scope to ensure that SQL queries are completed with my linq queries. I wrap everything with this using (TransactionScope scope = new TransactionScope()) I want to know where I need to install DTC. Do I need to install it on the IIS 7.5 box AND the SQL server? Do I need to unblock some ports? Are there any security risk in doing so? I've setup this up once before but don't remember how. If I can't get access to DTC then is there any other way to ensure a lINQ and sql query is atomic?

• ASP.NET MVC, JSON & non JavaScript clients

  I need to ensure that an application I am developing is accessable and also works with JavaScript turned off. I just need a pointer to assist with the following. I had 3 'chained' select boxes and I wanted JavaScript enabled clients to have a nice Ajax experience. I can easily write the required functionality to populate the chained boxes on the change event of the preceeding select using jQuery and JSON with a WCF service. However what about the non JavaScript client? Would I wrap a submit next to the select and place these inside their own form to post back with a certain action or different querstring parameter? Can the same controller give me a partial JSON response as well as feeding the full HTML response. Can anyone point me to a good demo that utilises both JSON and normal HTTP posts to produce the same result in ASP.NET MVC. All ASP.NET MVC demo/examples I see forget about the non JavaScript enabled client.

• Converting a C# DataTable instance to xml that contains HTML or binary data

  Hmmmm ... Although it works in most cases, one column has html data in it. It seems that doing this ... StringBuilder xmltarget = new StringBuilder(); XmlWriter xmlWriter = XmlWriter.Create(xmltarget); tableData.WriteXml(xmlWriter); ... doesn't identify where this html or binary data exists and wrap the data in cdata tags as it should ... Is there something i need to do to ensure the relevant checks are made and a working xml string is produced?

• Need help from CSS purist!

  I'm beginning to use CSS more and more but I'm not sure if I'm using it as intended in all cases. I have classes named things like 'box' that will wrap the content inside it with a border, which seems like good CSS to me. On the other hand I have classes like 'margin-right-5' and 'float-left' that sets the css to margin-right: 5px and float:left respectively. I'm wondering if this is good practice. Then in my markup I'd do something like: <div class="box float-left margin-right-5"> <!-- CONTENT HERE --> </div> Sometimes I may want to float right or not have a margin at all and still use the 'box' class, so I use several classes in order to make the css more flexible. Am I destroying the principles of CSS?
