  • Do Any Client-Side JavaScript Frameworks Integrate Well With Node.js+Express.js+socket.io.js?

    - by Tom D
I'm building an webapp using Node.js+Express.js+socket.io.js on the backend. Do any of the popular front-end frameworks (Agility, Angular, Backbone, Closure, Dojo, Ember, GWT, jQuery, Knockback, Knockout, Spine, YUI, etc) integrate well with this backend for "real-time" applications? I want my application to have a very "real-time" feel. Specifically, when a user submits a form I want the information to be sent using web sockets to the backend for validation and (if validation passes) to be updated in the database. Then, the server-side will use web sockets to send a confirmation that the data was saved or some list of errors. I will use the server's response to update the page using JavaScript. I know all this can be done with any of the listed frameworks. I'm interested in features of particular frameworks that will help the framework integrate better with the Node-based backend than the other frameworks.

  • jQuery compatible JavaScript documentation generator

    - by clyfe
I need to choose a documentation generator (similar to jdoc in java or rdoc in ruby) for my javascript project that (built with jquery, underscore and backbone) Candidates: jsdoc toolkit pdoc natural docs docco YUI doc doctool http://jquery.bassistance.de/docTool/docTool.html other ? Requirements should work with jquery, underscore and backbone. that means object-literal methods etc I really like pdoc but its too centered around prototype, poorly documented, and I don't want to make extra files (sections?) to make it work (not sure about this) docco is nice but I want structured output (as in menu + class/func structure like jdoc) must be command line/makefile compatible (not web pastie) Tips, tricks, tutorials, success stories, advice greatly welcomed. Why Doesn't jQuery use JSDoc?

  • Best way to manage a header navigation menu from within a template?

    - by Stefan Kendall
I'm looking to put navigation in my GSP template, and I would like to set the active class on the navigation elements for each respective page. What's the best way to do this? I have several .gsp views merging with a single template that looks like this: <div id="bd" role="main"> <div role="navigation" class="yui-g"> <ul id="nav"><a href="index.gsp"><li class="active">Home</li></a><a href = "products.gsp"><li>Products</li></a><a href = "contacts.gsp"><li>Contact</li></a></ul> </div> <g:layoutBody/> </div>

  • What is a good Very-High level UI framework for JavaScript?

    - by Robert Gould
I need to write a temporary Web-based graphical front-end for a custom server system. In this case performance and scalability aren't issues, since at most 10 people may check the system simultaneously. Also it should be PHP or Python (server) & JavaScript (client) (can't use Flex or Silverlight for very specific non-programming related issues). So I know I could use YUI or jQuery, but was wondering if there is something even more high-level that would say allow me to write such a little project within a few hours of work, and get done with it. Basically I want to be as lazy as possible (this is throw-away code anyways) and get the job done in as little time as possible. Any suggestions?

  • Modern Web Development + General question

    - by ritu
I have been given a nasty wake up a while ago when I discovered that my 10 years of experience was really equivalent of about 4 (got trapped in a big company doing the same thing over and over without realizing it) and is now paying a huge price. Question 1: I did servlets/JSP programming back in the day (2001-2003). Since then there have been libraries like GWT, YUI, etc. Is JSP still the preferred way of building web apps using Java? Question 2: Because I enjoyed what I was doing and needed to pay the bills, I didn't realize that the ground below me has shifted. How do avoid this in the future? My years of C system programming doesn't seem to matter a lot now to the young guys who talk about design patterns.

  • Is there a smart web developer language skill combination?

    - by Cryo
I'm no newbie to programming, but I'm making the move to a career in web development, and I've noticed that so many job postings have different combinations of skill requirements: (PHP, C#, XML, XHTML/CSS, ASP, .NET, jQuery, YUI, Joomla, Ruby, Perl, Python, Java, Javascript... the list goes on.) As of now, I've started learning XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, PHP, and mySQL, but with so many combinations, I want to plan ahead to have a marketable combination of skills as early on as possible. Am I on the right path? What is vital for a marketable web programmer's arsenal? Thanks for your thoughts.

  • Definitive method for sizing font in css

    - by David
Hi there, I would like to know some opinions from experienced developers on what they think the definitive way to size fonts (in a base sense). I know that working with ems is considered best but im referring to the best way to set the base font size. There is the technique of setting font to 10px using 62.5 method but i think ie has an issue with rounding which throws this out slightly (perhaps not) YUI framework uses body { font:13px/1.231 arial,helvetica,clean,sans-serif; /* for IE6/7 */ *font-size:small; /* for IE Quirks Mode */ *font:x-small; } which really confuses me! Tripoli uses html { font-size:125%; } body { font-size:50%; } a list apart suggest something along the lines of : body { font-size: 16px; *font-size: 100%; } So which is the best either out of these methods or any alternatives. The best being the easiest to work with and the most reliable cross browser.

  • Is there a simple library that will render JSON objects as trees?

    - by Robert Gould
So, is there a VERY simple library that will render JSON objects as trees? I know that this can be done in many ways (such as YUI), but for debug purposes I'd like to simply be able to view a JSON objects I receive from a server as a tree, nothing fancy (but collapsable tree's would be a bonus). The kind of solution I'm looking for would be something like: <script source="something.js"/> <script> obj ={"hello":"world"} lib.renderJSON("someid",obj); </script> ... <div id="someid"/> Any ideas?

  • What's this UI pattern called?

    - by Bears will eat you
I'm trying to figure out what this sort of thing is called, and eventually how I can create one in a web browser. It looks like this (screenshot of the first app that came to mind): The specific component/pattern I'm looking for is the two list boxes ("Included Gear" and "Excluded Gear") that represent inclusion/exclusion of items from a set. I'm not really looking for the WPF name (if there is one) but it might be helpful. I am looking for the name of this thingy, if there is one, and if you really want to make my day, you can point me toward a jQuery or YUI way of making one of these dealies in a browser. In case you were wondering, the screenshot is a World of Warcraft gear optimization program. Go figure why it was the first program that came to mind when I was trying to think of an example.

  • travesersing the dom with inexact parameters

    - by rashcroft23
Hi, I want to grab the image src on a product page in a e commerce website. I'm writing this as a bookmarklet, so I'd like the code to work universally as possible. I've noticed that there are only two reoccurring factors in the product image tag among top e-commerce websites (amazon, bestbuy ect.): border=0 and 180<width&height<400. So how could I write a selector that would give me the srcof the first img element on the page with no border and width & height between 180 and 400 px? Or is there a better way of doing this? P.S. since I'm trying to keep the bookmarklet as light as possible, I don't want to use any libraries (jquery, yui etc)

  • How to improve this piece of code

    - by user303518
Can anyone help me on this. It may be very frustrating for you all. But I want you guys to take a moment to look at the code below and please tell me all the things that are wrong in the below piece of code. You can copy it into your visual studio to analyze this better. You don’t have to make this code compile. My task is to get the following things: Most obvious mistakes with this code All the things that are wrong/bad practices with the code below Modify/Write an optimized version of this code. Keep in mind, the code DOES NOT need to compile. Reduce the number of lines of code You should NEVER try to implement something like below: public List<ValidationErrorDto> ProcessEQuote(string eQuoteXml, long programUniversalID) { // Get Program Info. • Speeding up ROW_NUMBER in SQL Server

    - by BlueRaja
We have a number of machines which record data into a database at sporadic intervals. For each record, I'd like to obtain the time period between this recording and the previous recording. I can do this using ROW_NUMBER as follows: WITH TempTable AS ( SELECT *, ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY Machine_ID ORDER BY Date_Time) AS Ordering FROM dbo.DataTable ) SELECT [Current].*, Previous.Date_Time AS PreviousDateTime FROM TempTable AS [Current] INNER JOIN TempTable AS Previous ON [Current].Machine_ID = Previous.Machine_ID AND Previous.Ordering = [Current].Ordering + 1 The problem is, it goes really slow (several minutes on a table with about 10k entries) - I tried creating separate indicies on Machine_ID and Date_Time, and a single joined-index, but nothing helps. Is there anyway to rewrite this query to go faster?

  • JSF command button attribute is transferred incorrectly

    - by Oleg Rybak
I have following code in jsf page, backed by jsf managed bean <h:dataTable value="#{poolBean.pools}" var="item"> <h:column> <f:facet name="header"> <h:outputLabel value="Id"/> </f:facet> <h:outputText value="#{item.id}"/> </h:column> <h:column> <f:facet name="header"> <h:outputLabel value="Start Range"/> </f:facet> <h:inputText value="#{item.startRange}" required="true"/> </h:column> <h:column> <f:facet name="header"> <h:outputText value="End Range"/> </f:facet> <h:inputText value="#{item.endRange}" required="true"/> </h:column> <h:column> <f:facet name="header"> <h:outputText value="Pool type"/> </f:facet> <h:selectOneMenu value="#{item.poolType}" required="true"> <f:selectItems value="#{poolBean.poolTypesMenu}"/> </h:selectOneMenu> </h:column> <h:column> <f:facet name="header"/> <h:commandButton id="ModifyPool" actionListener="#{poolBean.updatePool}" image="img/update.gif" title="Modify Pool"> <f:attribute name="pool" value="#{item}"/> </h:commandButton> </h:column> </h:dataTable> This code fragment is dedicated to editing come collection of items. Each row of the table contains "edit" button that submits changed values of the row to the server. It has the item itself as an attribute. Submit is performed by calling actionListener method in the backing managed bean. This code runs correctly on Glassfish v 2.1 But when the server was updated to Glassfish v 2.1.1, the attribute stopped to be passed correctly. Instead of passing edited item (when we change the values in table row, we are actually changing the underlying object fields), the source item is submitted to server, i.e. the item that was previously given to the page. All the changes that were made on the page are discarded. I tried to update jsf version from 1.2_02 to 1.2_14 (we are using jsf RI), but it had no effect. Perhaps anyone came across the same problem? Any help and suggestions will be appreciated.

For example: <p:selectOneMenu value="#{eval.evaluateAsBean(bean).text}" > <f:selectItems value="#{eval.evaluateAsBean(bean).values}" var="val" itemLabel="#{val}" itemValue="#{val}" /> </p:selectOneMenu> If there is a managed bean called testBean and in my view bean has the "testBean"value, I want the text or values property of testBean to be called. EDIT1 The context An object consists of a list of properties(values). One property is modified with a custom JSF editor, depending on its type. The list of editors is determined from the object's type, and displayed in a form using custom:include tags. This custom tag is used to dynamically include the editors <custom:include src="#{editor.component}">. The component property points to the location of the JSF editor. In my example some editors(rendered as select boxes) will use the same facelet(dynamicDropdown.xhtml). Every editor has a session scoped managed bean. I want to reuse the same facelet with multiple beans and to pass the name of the bean to dynamicDropdown.xhtml using the bean param. genericAccount.xhtml <p:dataTable value="#{group.editors}" var="editor"> <p:column headerText="Key"> <h:outputText value="#{editor.name}" /> </p:column> <p:column headerText="Value"> <h:panelGroup rendered="#{not editor.href}"> <h:outputText value="#{editor.component}" escape="false" /> </h:panelGroup> <h:panelGroup rendered="#{editor.href}"> <custom:include src="#{editor.component}"> <ui:param name="enabled" value="#{editor.enabled}"/> <ui:param name="bean" value="#{editor.bean}"/> <custom:include> </h:panelGroup> </p:column> </p:dataTable> #{editor.component} refers to a dynamicDropdown.xhtml file. dynamicDropdown.xhtml <ui:composition xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xmlns:ui="http://java.sun.com/jsf/facelets" xmlns:h="http://java.sun.com/jsf/html" xmlns:f="http://java.sun.com/jsf/core" xmlns:p="http://primefaces.prime.com.tr/ui"> <p:selectOneMenu value="#{eval.evaluateAsBean(bean).text}" > <f:selectItems value="#{eval.evaluateAsBean(bean).values}" var="val" itemLabel="#{val}" itemValue="#{val}" /> </p:selectOneMenu> </ui:composition> eval is a managed bean: @ManagedBean(name = "eval") @ApplicationScoped public class ELEvaluator { ... public Object evaluateAsBean(String el) { FacesContext context = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance(); Object bean = context.getELContext() .getELResolver().getValue(context.getELContext(), null, el); return bean; } ... }

  • Why doesn't JSF 2.0 RI (Mojarra) scan my class' annotations?

    - by DWoldrich
    I have a War and Jar project in my Eclipse-based JSF project. I have decided to use annotations to declare my FacesConverter, (among a myriad other things), rather than declare it using my faces-config.xml. @FacesConverter(value="passwordFieldStringConverter") public class PasswordFieldStringConverter implements Converter { public Object getAsObject(FacesContext arg0, UIComponent arg1, String arg2) throws ConverterException { try { return arg2.getBytes("UTF-16BE"); } catch(UnsupportedEncodingException uee) { Assert.impossibleException(uee); } return(null); } public String getAsString(FacesContext arg0, UIComponent arg1, Object arg2) throws ConverterException { try { return new String((byte[]) arg2, "UTF-16BE"); } catch(UnsupportedEncodingException uee) { Assert.impossibleException(uee); } return(null); } } And then I use passwordFieldStringConverter directly in my .xhtml: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xmlns:h="http://java.sun.com/jsf/html" xmlns:f="http://java.sun.com/jsf/core" xmlns:ui="http://java.sun.com/jsf/facelets" xmlns:sec="http://www.springframework.org/security/facelets/tags"> <ui:composition> <f:view> <f:loadBundle basename="landingPage.bundle" var="bundle" /> <ui:decorate template="/WEB-INF/jsf_helpers/htmlShell.xhtml"> <ui:param name="PageTitleParam" value="#{bundle.pageTitle}" /> <h:form> <h:dataTable var="rowVar" value="#{userListContainer.users}"> <f:facet name="header"><h:outputText value="Users you are currently managing:" /></f:facet> <h:column> <f:facet name="header"> <h:outputText value="Screen Name" /> </f:facet> <h:outputText value="#{rowVar.screenName}" /> </h:column> <h:column> <f:facet name="header"> <h:outputText value="Password" /> </f:facet> <h:outputText value="#{rowVar.password}"> <f:converter converterId="passwordFieldStringConverter" /> </h:outputText> </h:column> </h:dataTable> </h:form> </ui:decorate> </f:view> </ui:composition> </html> JSF is supposed to scan the jars in my War at deployment-time and detect which classes have annotations on them (and auto-configure the application accordingly). My problem is that JSF is apparently not detecting the classes I have which sport annotations. The War project has all of my .xhtml files as well as the project's faces-config.xml, my Jar project has all of my faces related Java code (action beans, managed beans, custom converters, etc.)

  • SqlDataAdapter Update is not working in C# wih Sql Server

    - by Ahmed
    I am trying to save data from C# form to Sql server Northwind Orders database, I am only using CustomerID, OrderDate and ShippedDate for data entry. Following is the code to Form load and save button: private void Form1_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { SetComb(); connectionString = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["connectionString"]; sqlConnection = new SqlConnection(connectionString); String sqlSelect = "Select OrderID, CustomerID, OrderDate, ShippedDate from Orders"; sqlDataMaster = new SqlDataAdapter(sqlSelect, sqlConnection); sqlConnection.Open(); //=============================================================================== //--- Set up the INSERT Command //=============================================================================== sInsProcName = "prInsert_Order"; insertcommand = new SqlCommand(sInsProcName, sqlConnection); insertcommand.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; insertcommand.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@nNewID", SqlDbType.Int, 0, ParameterDirection.Output, false, 0, 0, "OrderID", DataRowVersion.Default, null)); insertcommand.UpdatedRowSource = UpdateRowSource.OutputParameters; insertcommand.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@sCustomerID", SqlDbType.NChar, 5,"CustomerID")); insertcommand.Parameters["@sCustomerID"].Value = cmbCust.SelectedValue; insertcommand.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@dtOrderDate", SqlDbType.DateTime, 8,"OrderDate")); insertcommand.Parameters["@dtOrderDate"].Value = dtOrdDt.Text; insertcommand.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@dtShipDate", SqlDbType.DateTime, 8,"ShippedDate")); insertcommand.Parameters["@dtShipDate"].Value = dtShipDt.Text; sqlDataMaster.InsertCommand = insertcommand; //=============================================================================== //--- Set up the UPDATE Command //=============================================================================== sUpdProcName = "prUpdate_Order"; updatecommand = new SqlCommand(sUpdProcName, sqlConnection); updatecommand.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; updatecommand.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@nOrderID", SqlDbType.Int, 4, "OrderID")); updatecommand.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@dtOrderDate", SqlDbType.DateTime, 8, "OrderDate")); updatecommand.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@dtShipDate", SqlDbType.DateTime, 8, "ShippedDate")); sqlDataMaster.UpdateCommand = updatecommand; //=============================================================================== //--- Set up the DELETE Command //=============================================================================== sDelProcName = "prDelete_Order"; deletecommand = new SqlCommand(sDelProcName, sqlConnection); deletecommand.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; deletecommand.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@nOrderID", SqlDbType.Int, 4, "OrderID")); sqlDataMaster.DeleteCommand = deletecommand; dt = new DataTable(); sqlDataMaster.FillSchema(dt, SchemaType.Source); ds = new DataSet(); ds.Tables.Add(dt); bs = new BindingSource(); bs.DataSource = ds.Tables[0]; } public void SetComb() { cmbCust.DataSource = dm.GetData("Select * from Customers order by CompanyName"); cmbCust.DisplayMember = "CompanyName"; cmbCust.ValueMember = "CustomerId"; cmbCust.Text = ""; } private void btnSave_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { sqlDataMaster.Update((DataTable) bs.DataSource); } and Stored Procedures for Insert/Update/Delete set ANSI_NULLS ON set QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[prInsert_Order] -- ALTER PROCEDURE prInsert_Order @sCustomerID CHAR(5), @dtOrderDate DATETIME, @dtShipDate DATETIME, @nNewID INT OUTPUT AS SET NOCOUNT ON INSERT INTO Orders (CustomerID, OrderDate, ShippedDate) VALUES (@sCustomerID, @dtOrderDate, @dtShipDate) SELECT @nNewID = SCOPE_IDENTITY() set ANSI_NULLS ON set QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[prUpdate_Order] -- ALTER PROCEDURE prUpdate_Order @nOrderID INT, @dtOrderDate DATETIME, @dtShipDate DATETIME AS UPDATE Orders SET OrderDate = @dtOrderDate, ShippedDate = @dtShipDate WHERE OrderID = @nOrderID set ANSI_NULLS ON set QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[prDelete_Order] -- ALTER PROCEDURE prDelete_Order @nOrderID INT AS DELETE Orders WHERE OrderID = @nOrderID In the form CustomerID is selected via combobox which has Display property of CustomerName and Value property of CustomerID. But when clicking save button it shows no error, but it also don't save anything in Orders Table of Northwind....dm.GetData is the method of my Data Access Layer class to just get the info and populate CustomerID combobox. Any help with the code is highly appreciated... Thanks Ahmed

  • If I use a facade class with generic methods to access the JPA API, how should I provide additional processing for specific types?

    - by Shaun
Let's say I'm making a fairly simple web application using JAVA EE specs (I've heard this is possible). In this app, I only have about 10 domain/data objects, and these are represented by JPA Entities. Architecturally, I would consider the JPA API to perform the role of a DAO. Of course, I don't want to use the EntityManager directly in my UI (JSF) and I need to manage transactions, so I delegate these tasks to the so-called service layer. More specifically, I would like to be able to handle these tasks in a single DataService class (often also called CrudService) with generic methods. See this article by Adam Bien for an example interface: http://www.adam-bien.com/roller/abien/entry/generic_crud_service_aka_dao My project differs from that article in that I can't use EJBs, so my service classes are essentially just named beans and I handle transactions manually. Regardless, what I want is a single interface for simple CRUD operations on my data objects because having a different class for each data type would lead to a lot of duplicate and/or unnecessary code. Ideally, my views would be able to use a method such as public <T> List<T> findAll(Class<T> type) { ... } to retrieve data. Using JSF, it might look something like this: <h:dataTable value="#{dataService.findAll(data.class)}" var="d"> ... </h:dataTable> Similarly, after validating forms, my controller could submit the data with a method such as: public <T> void add(T entity) { ... } Granted, you'd probably actually want to return something useful to the caller. In any case, this works well if your data can be treated as homogenous in this manner. Alas, it breaks down when you need to perform additional processing on certain objects before passing them on to JPA. For example, let's say I'm dealing with Books and Authors which have a many-to-many relationship. Each Book has a set of IDs referring to its authors, and each Author has a set of IDs referring to their books. Normally, JPA can manage this kind of relationship for you, but in some cases it can't (for example, the google app engine JPA provider doesn't support this). Thus, when I persist a new book for example, I may need to update the corresponding author entities. My question, then, is if there's an elegant way to handle this or if I should reconsider the sanity of my whole design. Here's a couple ways I see of dealing with it: The instanceof operator. I could use this to target certain classes when special processing is needed. Perhaps maintainability suffers and it isn't beautiful code, but if there's only 10 or so domain objects it can't be all that bad... could it? Make a different service for each entity type (ie, BookService and AuthorService). All services would inherit from a generic DataService base class and override methods if special processing is needed. At this point, you could probably also just call them DAOs instead. As always, I appreciate the help. Let me know if any clarifications are needed, as I left out many smaller details.

  • WPF ListView as a DataGrid – Part 2

    - by psheriff
In my last blog post I showed you how to create GridViewColumn objects on the fly from the meta-data in a DataTable. By doing this you can create columns for a ListView at runtime instead of having to pre-define each ListView for each different DataTable. Well, many of us use collections of our classes and it would be nice to be able to do the same thing for our collection classes as well. This blog post will show you one approach for using collection classes as the source of the data for your ListView.  Figure 1: A List of Data using a ListView Load Property NamesYou could use reflection to gather the property names in your class, however there are two things wrong with this approach. First, reflection is too slow, and second you may not want to display all your properties from your class in the ListView. Instead of reflection you could just create your own custom collection class of PropertyHeader objects. Each PropertyHeader object will contain a property name and a header text value at a minimum. You could add a width property if you wanted as well. All you need to do is to create a collection of property header objects where each object represents one column in your ListView. Below is a simple example: PropertyHeaders coll = new PropertyHeaders(); coll.Add(new PropertyHeader("ProductId", "Product ID"));coll.Add(new PropertyHeader("ProductName", "Product Name"));coll.Add(new PropertyHeader("Price", "Price")); Once you have this collection created, you could pass this collection to a method that would create the GridViewColumn objects based on the information in this collection. Below is the full code for the PropertyHeader class. Besides the PropertyName and Header properties, there is a constructor that will allow you to set both properties when the object is created. C#public class PropertyHeader{  public PropertyHeader()  {  }   public PropertyHeader(string propertyName, string headerText)  {    PropertyName = propertyName;    HeaderText = headerText;  }   public string PropertyName { get; set; }  public string HeaderText { get; set; }} VB.NETPublic Class PropertyHeader  Public Sub New()  End Sub   Public Sub New(ByVal propName As String, ByVal header As String)    PropertyName = propName    HeaderText = header  End Sub   Private mPropertyName As String  Private mHeaderText As String   Public Property PropertyName() As String    Get      Return mPropertyName    End Get    Set(ByVal value As String)      mPropertyName = value    End Set  End Property   Public Property HeaderText() As String    Get      Return mHeaderText    End Get    Set(ByVal value As String)      mHeaderText = value    End Set  End PropertyEnd Class You can use a Generic List class to create a collection of PropertyHeader objects as shown in the following code. C#public class PropertyHeaders : List<PropertyHeader>{} VB.NETPublic Class PropertyHeaders  Inherits List(Of PropertyHeader)End Class Create Property Header Objects You need to create a method somewhere that will create and return a collection of PropertyHeader objects that will represent the columns you wish to add to your ListView prior to binding your collection class to that ListView. Below is a sample method called GetProperties that builds a list of PropertyHeader objects with properties and headers for a Product object. C#public PropertyHeaders GetProperties(){  PropertyHeaders coll = new PropertyHeaders();   coll.Add(new PropertyHeader("ProductId", "Product ID"));  coll.Add(new PropertyHeader("ProductName", "Product Name"));  coll.Add(new PropertyHeader("Price", "Price"));   return coll;} VB.NETPublic Function GetProperties() As PropertyHeaders  Dim coll As New PropertyHeaders()   coll.Add(New PropertyHeader("ProductId", "Product ID"))  coll.Add(New PropertyHeader("ProductName", "Product Name"))  coll.Add(New PropertyHeader("Price", "Price"))   Return collEnd Function WPFListViewCommon Class Now that you have a collection of PropertyHeader objects you need a method that will create a GridView and a collection of GridViewColumn objects based on this PropertyHeader collection. Below is a static/Shared method that you might put into a class called WPFListViewCommon. C#public static GridView CreateGridViewColumns(  PropertyHeaders properties){  GridView gv;  GridViewColumn gvc;   // Create the GridView  gv = new GridView();  gv.AllowsColumnReorder = true;   // Create the GridView Columns  foreach (PropertyHeader item in properties)  {    gvc = new GridViewColumn();    gvc.DisplayMemberBinding = new Binding(item.PropertyName);    gvc.Header = item.HeaderText;    gvc.Width = Double.NaN;    gv.Columns.Add(gvc);  }   return gv;} VB.NETPublic Shared Function CreateGridViewColumns( _    ByVal properties As PropertyHeaders) As GridView  Dim gv As GridView  Dim gvc As GridViewColumn   ' Create the GridView  gv = New GridView()  gv.AllowsColumnReorder = True   ' Create the GridView Columns  For Each item As PropertyHeader In properties    gvc = New GridViewColumn()    gvc.DisplayMemberBinding = New Binding(item.PropertyName)    gvc.Header = item.HeaderText    gvc.Width = [Double].NaN    gv.Columns.Add(gvc)  Next   Return gvEnd Function Build the Product Screen To build the window shown in Figure 1, you might write code like the following: C#private void CollectionSample(){  Product prod = new Product();   // Setup the GridView Columns  lstData.View = WPFListViewCommon.CreateGridViewColumns(       prod.GetProperties());  lstData.DataContext = prod.GetProducts();} VB.NETPrivate Sub CollectionSample()  Dim prod As New Product()   ' Setup the GridView Columns  lstData.View = WPFListViewCommon.CreateGridViewColumns( _       prod.GetProperties())  lstData.DataContext = prod.GetProducts()End Sub The Product class contains a method called GetProperties that returns a PropertyHeaders collection. You pass this collection to the WPFListViewCommon’s CreateGridViewColumns method and it will create a GridView for the ListView. When you then feed the DataContext property of the ListView the Product collection the appropriate columns have already been created and data bound. Summary In this blog you learned how to create a ListView that acts like a DataGrid using a collection class. While it does take a little code to do this, it is an alternative to creating each GridViewColumn in XAML. This gives you a lot of flexibility. You could even read in the property names and header text from an XML file for a truly configurable ListView. • Using Oracle Data in the Business Rules Engine

    - by Christopher House
Yesterday I started working on some new functionality that I had planned to implement using the Business Rules Engine.  As I got further into it, I realized that some of my rules were going to need to reference some data that resides in an Oracle database.  I knew the Business Rules Composer supports using DataConnections and TypedDataTables, but I’d never used this functionality myself, so I wasn’t so sure how it would work with Oracle.  As it turns out, it’s very do-able, there’s just little hoop you need to jump through. I fired up BRC and my suspicions were quickly confirmed.  BRC only recognizes SQL Server databases when it comes to editing rules.  Not letting that deter me, I decided to see if I could “trick” BRE into using Oracle data. On my local SQL server, I created a new database and in that database, created a table that matched the schema of the table I wanted to use in the Oracle database.  I then set about creating my rules, referencing the new SQL Server database everywhere I wanted to use Oracle data.  Finally, I created a new class library and added a class that implements Microsoft.RuleEngine.IFactRetriever.  In that class, I added the necessary code to get a DataSet from the Oracle server, wrap it in a TypedDataTable and assert it into the rule engine.  It’s worth pointing out that in my IFactRetriever class, I made sure to set my DataSet name to the name of the database I’d referenced in the BRC and the DataTable’s name to the name of the table that I’d referenced in the BRC. After gac’ing the new class library and deploying my policy, I tested and everything worked as expected.

  • TOTD #166: Using NoSQL database in your Java EE 6 Applications on GlassFish - MongoDB for now!

    - by arungupta
The Java EE 6 platform includes Java Persistence API to work with RDBMS. The JPA specification defines a comprehensive API that includes, but not restricted to, how a database table can be mapped to a POJO and vice versa, provides mechanisms how a PersistenceContext can be injected in a @Stateless bean and then be used for performing different operations on the database table and write typesafe queries. There are several well known advantages of RDBMS but the NoSQL movement has gained traction over past couple of years. The NoSQL databases are not intended to be a replacement for the mainstream RDBMS. As Philosophy of NoSQL explains, NoSQL database was designed for casual use where all the features typically provided by an RDBMS are not required. The name "NoSQL" is more of a category of databases that is more known for what it is not rather than what it is. The basic principles of NoSQL database are: No need to have a pre-defined schema and that makes them a schema-less database. Addition of new properties to existing objects is easy and does not require ALTER TABLE. The unstructured data gives flexibility to change the format of data any time without downtime or reduced service levels. Also there are no joins happening on the server because there is no structure and thus no relation between them. Scalability and performance is more important than the entire set of functionality typically provided by an RDBMS. This set of databases provide eventual consistency and/or transactions restricted to single items but more focus on CRUD. Not be restricted to SQL to access the information stored in the backing database. Designed to scale-out (horizontal) instead of scale-up (vertical). This is important knowing that databases, and everything else as well, is moving into the cloud. RBDMS can scale-out using sharding but requires complex management and not for the faint of heart. Unlike RBDMS which require a separate caching tier, most of the NoSQL databases comes with integrated caching. Designed for less management and simpler data models lead to lower administration as well. There are primarily three types of NoSQL databases: Key-Value stores (e.g. Cassandra and Riak) Document databases (MongoDB or CouchDB) Graph databases (Neo4J) You may think NoSQL is panacea but as I mentioned above they are not meant to replace the mainstream databases and here is why: RDBMS have been around for many years, very stable, and functionally rich. This is something CIOs and CTOs can bet their money on without much worry. There is a reason 98% of Fortune 100 companies run Oracle :-) NoSQL is cutting edge, brings excitement to developers, but enterprises are cautious about them. Commercial databases like Oracle are well supported by the backing enterprises in terms of providing support resources on a global scale. There is a full ecosystem built around these commercial databases providing training, performance tuning, architecture guidance, and everything else. NoSQL is fairly new and typically backed by a single company not able to meet the scale of these big enterprises. NoSQL databases are good for CRUDing operations but business intelligence is extremely important for enterprises to stay competitive. RDBMS provide extensive tooling to generate this data but that was not the original intention of NoSQL databases and is lacking in that area. Generating any meaningful information other than CRUDing require extensive programming. Not suited for complex transactions such as banking systems or other highly transactional applications requiring 2-phase commit. SQL cannot be used with NoSQL databases and writing simple queries can be involving. Enough talking, lets take a look at some code. This blog has published multiple blogs on how to access a RDBMS using JPA in a Java EE 6 application. This Tip Of The Day (TOTD) will show you can use MongoDB (a document-oriented database) with a typical 3-tier Java EE 6 application. Lets get started! The complete source code of this project can be downloaded here. Download MongoDB for your platform from here (1.8.2 as of this writing) and start the server as: arun@ArunUbuntu:~/tools/mongodb-linux-x86_64-1.8.2/bin$./mongod./mongod --help for help and startup optionsSun Jun 26 20:41:11 [initandlisten] MongoDB starting : pid=11210port=27017 dbpath=/data/db/ 64-bit Sun Jun 26 20:41:11 [initandlisten] db version v1.8.2, pdfile version4.5Sun Jun 26 20:41:11 [initandlisten] git version:433bbaa14aaba6860da15bd4de8edf600f56501bSun Jun 26 20:41:11 [initandlisten] build sys info: Linuxbs-linux64.10gen.cc 2.6.21.7-2.ec2.v1.2.fc8xen #1 SMP Fri Nov 2017:48:28 EST 2009 x86_64 BOOST_LIB_VERSION=1_41Sun Jun 26 20:41:11 [initandlisten] waiting for connections on port 27017Sun Jun 26 20:41:11 [websvr] web admin interface listening on port 28017 The default directory for the database is /data/db and needs to be created as: sudo mkdir -p /data/db/sudo chown `id -u` /data/db You can specify a different directory using "--dbpath" option. Refer to Quickstart for your specific platform. Using NetBeans, create a Java EE 6 project and make sure to enable CDI and add JavaServer Faces framework. Download MongoDB Java Driver (2.6.3 of this writing) and add it to the project library by selecting "Properties", "LIbraries", "Add Library...", creating a new library by specifying the location of the JAR file, and adding the library to the created project. Edit the generated "index.xhtml" such that it looks like: <h1>Add a new movie</h1><h:form> Name: <h:inputText value="#{movie.name}" size="20"/><br/> Year: <h:inputText value="#{movie.year}" size="6"/><br/> Language: <h:inputText value="#{movie.language}" size="20"/><br/> <h:commandButton actionListener="#{movieSessionBean.createMovie}" action="show" title="Add" value="submit"/></h:form> This page has a simple HTML form with three text boxes and a submit button. The text boxes take name, year, and language of a movie and the submit button invokes the "createMovie" method of "movieSessionBean" and then render "show.xhtml". Create "show.xhtml" ("New" -> "Other..." -> "Other" -> "XHTML File") such that it looks like: <head> <title><h1>List of movies</h1></title> </head> <body> <h:form> <h:dataTable value="#{movieSessionBean.movies}" var="m" > <h:column><f:facet name="header">Name</f:facet>#{m.name}</h:column> <h:column><f:facet name="header">Year</f:facet>#{m.year}</h:column> <h:column><f:facet name="header">Language</f:facet>#{m.language}</h:column> </h:dataTable> </h:form> This page shows the name, year, and language of all movies stored in the database so far. The list of movies is returned by "movieSessionBean.movies" property. Now create the "Movie" class such that it looks like: import com.mongodb.BasicDBObject;import com.mongodb.BasicDBObject;import com.mongodb.DBObject;import javax.enterprise.inject.Model;import javax.validation.constraints.Size;/** * @author arun */@Modelpublic class Movie { @Size(min=1, max=20) private String name; @Size(min=1, max=20) private String language; private int year; // getters and setters for "name", "year", "language" public BasicDBObject toDBObject() { BasicDBObject doc = new BasicDBObject(); doc.put("name", name); doc.put("year", year); doc.put("language", language); return doc; } public static Movie fromDBObject(DBObject doc) { Movie m = new Movie(); m.name = (String)doc.get("name"); m.year = (int)doc.get("year"); m.language = (String)doc.get("language"); return m; } @Override public String toString() { return name + ", " + year + ", " + language; }} Other than the usual boilerplate code, the key methods here are "toDBObject" and "fromDBObject". These methods provide a conversion from "Movie" -> "DBObject" and vice versa. The "DBObject" is a MongoDB class that comes as part of the mongo-2.6.3.jar file and which we added to our project earlier.  The complete javadoc for 2.6.3 can be seen here. Notice, this class also uses Bean Validation constraints and will be honored by the JSF layer. Finally, create "MovieSessionBean" stateless EJB with all the business logic such that it looks like: package org.glassfish.samples;import com.mongodb.BasicDBObject;import com.mongodb.DB;import com.mongodb.DBCollection;import com.mongodb.DBCursor;import com.mongodb.DBObject;import com.mongodb.Mongo;import java.net.UnknownHostException;import java.util.ArrayList;import java.util.List;import javax.annotation.PostConstruct;import javax.ejb.Stateless;import javax.inject.Inject;import javax.inject.Named;/** * @author arun */@Stateless@Namedpublic class MovieSessionBean { @Inject Movie movie; DBCollection movieColl; @PostConstruct private void initDB() throws UnknownHostException { Mongo m = new Mongo(); DB db = m.getDB("movieDB"); movieColl = db.getCollection("movies"); if (movieColl == null) { movieColl = db.createCollection("movies", null); } } public void createMovie() { BasicDBObject doc = movie.toDBObject(); movieColl.insert(doc); } public List<Movie> getMovies() { List<Movie> movies = new ArrayList(); DBCursor cur = movieColl.find(); System.out.println("getMovies: Found " + cur.size() + " movie(s)"); for (DBObject dbo : cur.toArray()) { movies.add(Movie.fromDBObject(dbo)); } return movies; }} The database is initialized in @PostConstruct. Instead of a working with a database table, NoSQL databases work with a schema-less document. The "Movie" class is the document in our case and stored in the collection "movies". The collection allows us to perform query functions on all movies. The "getMovies" method invokes "find" method on the collection which is equivalent to the SQL query "select * from movies" and then returns a List<Movie>. Also notice that there is no "persistence.xml" in the project. Right-click and run the project to see the output as: Enter some values in the text box and click on enter to see the result as: If you reached here then you've successfully used MongoDB in your Java EE 6 application, congratulations! Some food for thought and further play ... SQL to MongoDB mapping shows mapping between traditional SQL -> Mongo query language. Tutorial shows fun things you can do with MongoDB. Try the interactive online shell  The cookbook provides common ways of using MongoDB In terms of this project, here are some tasks that can be tried: Encapsulate database management in a JPA persistence provider. Is it even worth it because the capabilities are going to be very different ? MongoDB uses "BSonObject" class for JSON representation, add @XmlRootElement on a POJO and how a compatible JSON representation can be generated. This will make the fromXXX and toXXX methods redundant.
