• Cannot turn on "Network Discovery and File Sharing" when Windows Firewall is enabled

  I have a problem similar to this one. Windows Firewall prevents File and Printer sharing from working and Why does File and Printer Sharing keep turning off in Windows 7? I cannot turn on Network Discovery. This is Windows 7 Home Premium, x64. It's a Dell XPS 1340 and Windows came installed from the OEM. This used to work. Now it doesn't. I don't know what has changed. In windows Explorer, the UI looks like this: When I click the yellow panel that says "Click to change...", the panel disappears, then immediately reappears, with exactly the same text. If I go through the control panel "Network and Sharing Center" thing, the UI looks like this: If I tick the box to "turn on network discovery", the "Save Changes" button becomes enabled. If I then click that button, the dialog box just closes, with no message or confirmation. Re-opening the same dialog box shows that Network Discovery has not been turned on. If I turn off Windows Firewall, I can then turn on Network Discovery via either method. The machine is connected to a wireless home network, via a router. The network is marked as "Home Network" in the Network and Sharing Center, which I think corresponds to the "Private" profile in Windows Firewall Advanced Settings app. (Confirm?) The PC is not part of a domain, and has never been part of a domain. The machine is not bridging any networks. There is a regular 100baseT connector but I have the network adapter for that disabled in Windows. Something else that seems odd. Within Windows Firewall Advanced Settings, there are no predefined rules available. If I click the "New Rule...." Action on the action pane, the "Predefined" option is greyed out. like this: In order to attempt to allow the network discovery protocols through on the private network, I hand-coded a bunch of rules, intending to allow the necessary UPnP and WDP protocols supporting network discovery. I copied them from a working Windows 7 Ultimate PC, running on the same network. This did not work. Even with the hand-coded rules, I still cannot turn on Network Discovery. I looked on the interwebs, and the only solution that appears to work is a re-install of Windows. Seriously? If I try netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Network Discovery" new enable=Yes ...it says "No rules match the specified criteria" EDIT: by the way, these services are running. DNS Client Function Discovery Resource Publication SSDP Discovery UPnP Device Host in any case, since it works with no firewall, I would assume all necessary services are present and running. The issue is a firewall thing, but I don't know how to diagnose further, or fix it. Q1: Is there a way to definitively insure the correct holes are punched through the Windows Firewall to allow Network Discovery to function? Q2: Should I expect the "predefined" firewall rules to be greyed out? Q3: Why did this change?

• MySQL my.cnf file not being read, Ubuntu 10.04 64bit

  I've been researching this for a few hours with no luck. Basically it looks like my server's my.cnf file isn't being read at all. I've searched my server, and there's only one my.cnf file on it, located at /etc/mysql/my.cnf. Its ownership is root:root. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 64bit on a Linode.com server. I have the latest versions of MySQL and PHP installed. I've edited the my.cnf file, commented out "skip-innodb", and have set innodb to be the default storage engine using default-storage-engine = innodb And then restarted mysql. But when I do show engines, MyISAM is still coming up as the default engine. Also - none of the innodb settings I've added to the my.cnf file are being read. For example, I have this in my.cnf: innodb_buffer_pool_size=4G But in phpmyadmin, InnoDB is showing as having a buffer pool size of 8,192 KiB. Similarly, I have this in the my.cnf: innodb_data-file_path = ibdata1:500M:autoextend But in phpmyadmin, it's reading as ibdata1:10M:autoextend. It doesn't look like MyISAM info is being read from the my.cnf file either. The my.cnf file has skip-external-locking queried out, but it's showing as "on" in phpmyadmin. So - yeah, it looks like nothing in the my.cnf file is being read at all. But the server still works. I'm running a Drupal site on it and it seems to operate fine. So mysql seems to be drawing default settings from... some mysterious secret location. Any idea how I can make mysql see and use this my.cnf file? Actually, wait - it looks like it may be being read, not sure. • Prevent auto mounting Android sdcard under Linux Mint

  I recently obtained an older Android phone, so that I could test Android Apps on it. I've needed it because I have a Nexus 7 but not older Android versions, hardware, etc. to test on. I'm having a problem with it under Linux Mint with Cinnamon. When I plug the phone in, or remove and plug the sdcard from the phone back to it while the phone is plugged in, Linux automatically mounts the sdcard. This is a problem because once it is mounted under Linux, it dismounts from the phone running Android 2.3.5, and I can no longer test Android Apps I write that require the sdcard to be present, writable. I went to Menu System Tools System Settings System Details Removable Media, and it brings up this window. I have changed the settings to always "Ask what to do" on "Select how media should be handled". However, the sdcard still gets mounted and then I am asked how I want to open these files (media players, photo importers, file browser, etc.). If I click the checkbox for "Never prompt or start programs on media insertion", then the sdcard is mounted, and I am not asked how to open these files. Eject is just a noob word for Ubuntu users that means umount (unmount) like "Adminstrator" is another ubuntu noob word for the root user. And if I unmount the sdcard, the phone doesn't recognize it again until I take the sdcard out and plug it back in. The phone sees it for a brief moment until Linux Mint takes it over. There are 2 possible solutions and maybe more: 1) Prevent Linux from automounting sdcards some how 2) Tell Android not to allow the computer it is plugged into to take over the sdcard, HOW? • unable to sniff traffic despite network interface being in monitor or promiscuous mode

  I'm trying to sniff out my network's wireless traffic but am having issues. I'm able to put the card in monitor mode, but am unable to see any traffic except broadcasts, multicasts and probe/beacon frames. I have two network interfaces on this laptop. One is connected normally to 'linksys' and the other is in monitor mode. The interface in monitor mode is on the right channel. I'm not associated with the access point because, as I understand, I don't need to if using monitor mode (vs promiscuous). When I try to ping the router ip, I'm not seeing that traffic show up in wireshark. • Outlook 2007 Does Not Accept Login Credentials, OWA Webmail Does. Troubleshooting Advice?

  I am trying to connect Outlook 2007 to Exchange (Hosted Exchange from Rackspace). Soon, I will need to roll this out for our entire office. With the Exchange account added to Outlook, Outlook starts up and asks for the user's username and password. Unfortunately, it doesn't like the password I use for it. I can confirm this username (email address) and password combo works by using Outlook WebMail, and another user (in another network/office) confirmed the Exchange account does work within his Outlook client. In my network/office, I can confirm that an Outlook 2007 client (under Windows 7) can connect to the Hosted Exchange server from Rackspace. However, I have not been able to get Outlook 2007 (under Windows XP SP3) to connect to the very same Exchange server Outlook 2007 (under Windows 7) can connect to. Outlook continuously prompts me for the username and password and does not accept the correct combination. Now, regarding the Outlook client that cannot connect/login to Exchange: The user has full admin rights on the workstation We do not run a domain controller/LDAP The firewall on the workstation has been disabled Real time file scanning in Microsoft Security Essentials has been disabled There are no virus scanning applications that would interface with Outlook or an email server. The Exchange account is setup to run on a newly created Outlook profile The network firewall does not log any blocked attempts A packet capture at the router reveals communication between the workstation and the Exchange server or proxy (though, this is SSL encrypted, so I don't know what the computers are saying) I have applied a fix (Added DWORD value of 0 for DefConnectOpts under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\RPC) that was recommended to make RPC function when the workstation does not have a default gateway set. Workstation is configured as DHCP. This fix did nothing, and it may be worth noting the RPC subkey was not present until I added it. RPC service is running on the workstation The program is not running under any compatibility mode. Side note: Outlook 2007 installs with compatibility mode for XP enabled by default in windows 7. Outlook 2007 will not even try to connect to exchange if this compatibility mode is checked. In windows xp, I tried checking compatibility mode for windows 2000, and was unable to connect to exchange as well. Here is the specific configuration I've used in a blank outlook profile: Microsoft Exchange Server: ##MASKED##-MBX-C18.mex07a.mlsrvr.com Username: (Full Email Address: [email protected]) Password: ##MASKED## Outlook Anywhere: Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP Exchange Proxy Settings: Proxy Server: mex07a.emailsrvr.com Check "Connect using SSL only" Under "Only connect to proxy servers...", enter: msstd:mex07a.emailsrvr.com Check "On fast networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP" Check "On slow networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP" Proxy authentication settings: Basic Authentication Notes: mex07a.mlsrvr.com and mex07a.emailsrvr.com may look incorrect at first glance, but this is not a typo - these instructions were handed down from rackspace and are confirmed to be working, just not on this workstation. I have tried to use the RpcPing utility but must have been using it wrong. I got as far as "Bad Interface Descriptor". It would seem to me getting Outlook and Exchange to work together would be a breeze, especially since everything is done over port 80 with web services. Unfortunately, the user is stuck with WebMail access only, because Outlook won't accept the Exchange credentials. Do you have any ideas of other things I could try to debug this issue further? • Outlook 2013 keeps freezing, semi-consistently

  I have an oddity of problem with my Outlook's stability. It seems to be freezing up, not at random intervals, but based on a seemingly strange combination of configurations. I have been trying many different combinations, I've even devolved to "Cargo-cult" debugging, since I have no clue what is causing this... Here is my set up - since I don't know for sure which settings are causing the lockup, I'll probably mention irrelevant things: (relatively) clean install of Windows 8 (on hyper-v, if that matters) Clean install of Outlook 2013, fully updated 3 accounts configured: Hotmail account configured with ActiveSync Gmail account Large-ish account (several GB) connected with IMAP Only a few folders are subscribed in IMAP Outlook is set to only display subscribed folders configured to keep messages permanently Google Apps account, connected with IMAP Small account connected with IMAP All folders IMAP subscribed Outlook is set to only display subscribed folders configured to keep messages permanently Several Send/Receive Groups configured, to try different configurations of enabling/disable/partial the different accounts - with different send times, from 60 minutes down to 5 minutes. The problem is that at certain points Outlook completely freezes up and I have to kill it. This is not consistent - there are some things that cause it immediately almost consistently, there are some times that it just happens by itself after some period of time (sometimes a few moments, sometimes a few hours; sometimes while using it, sometimes after I've been away from it for a few hours). I have searched all over, and there seem to be many with similar (apparently) problem, and found numerous "solutions" (some even more cargocultish than mine), but so far none of them worked. I've removed all the accounts, both all together and one at a time, and re-configured them - eventually it freezes up. I've tried uninstalling Outlook, cleaning it up completely - removing files, app settings, registry keys, etc - then reinstalling - eventually it freezes up. I've only enabled the Hotmail account, disabling (but not removing) the Google accounts - apparently this does not lock up. I've enabled the Hotmail and the Gmail accounts, leaving the Apps one disabled - it seems like it does not lock up. With all accounts enabled, it locks up almost immediately after doing a send/receive. With only the Apps account enabled, it seems to not lock up. With the Hotmail and the Apps accounts enabled (Gmail disabled), it seems like it locks up after a random amount of time. With Hotmail enabled, and Gmail and Apps both enabled but set to receive only custom folder downloading (not all subscribed folders) - sometimes it locks up right after a send/receive, sometimes it goes for hours without locking up, and sometimes it only locks up when I send an email. I've tried switching the ports for the Google accounts (SSL/465 vs TLS/587), though I have no idea if this should affect, but no real difference. In short, I honestly have no idea what is actually causing Outlook to lock up, I might be completely barking up the wrong tree. At this point I don't really know what else to try, I'm flipping switches at random here. I would like to have all 3 accounts enabled, ideally in several groups (e.g. pull down only important folders in a group with short interval, and all other folders in a longer interval) - obviously without freezing up at all. I've tried putting in all the important details, if there is anything else important to add please let me know. Another issue that occurred to me might also be connected - the Google accounts don't always synchronize properly, even after a send/receive or "update folder". At least not consistently... though I haven't been able to find a significant connection between this and that.

• PHP.ini does not load

  Ok this is probably just me not knowing enough about php but here it goes. I'm on Ubuntu Hardy. I have a custom compiled version of PHP which I have compiled with these parameters. ./configure --enable-soap --with-zlib --with-mysql --with-apxs2=[correct path] --with-config-file-path=[correct path] --with-mysqli --with-curlwrappers --with-curl --with-mcrypt I have used the command pecl install pecl_http to install the http.so extension. It is in the correct module directory for my php.ini. My php.ini is loading and I can change things within the ini and effect php. I have included the extension=http.so line in my php.ini. That worked fine. Until I added these compilation options in order to add imap --with-openssl --with-kerberos --with-imap --with-imap-ssl Which failed because I needed the c-client library which I fixed by apt-get install libc-client-dev After which php compiles fine and I have working imap support, woo. HOWEVER, now all my calls to HttpRequest which is part of the pecl_http extention in http.so result in Fatal error: Class 'HttpRequest' not found errors. I figure the http.so module is no longer loading for one reason or another but I cannot find any errors showing the reason. You might say "Have you tried undoing the new imap setup?" To which I will answer. Yes I have. I directly undid all my config changes and uninstalled the c-client library and I still can't get it to work. I thought that's weird... I have made no changes that would have resulted in this issue. After looking at that I have also discovered that not only is the http extension no longer loading but all my extensions loaded via php.ini are no longer loading. Can someone at least give me some further debugging steps? So far I have tried enabling all errors including startup errors in my php.ini which works for other errors, but I'm not seeing any startup errors either on command line or via apache. And yet again the php.ini appears to be being parsed given that if I run php_info() I get settings that are in the php.ini. Edit it appears that only some of the php.ini settings are being listened to. Is there a way to test my php.ini? Edit Edit It appears I am mistaken again and the php.ini is not being loaded at all any longer. However, If I run php_info() I get that it's looking for my php.ini in the correct location. Edit Edit Edit My config is at the config file path location below but it says no config file loaded. WTF Permission issue? It is currently 644 so everyone should be able to read it if not write it. I tried making it 777 and that didn't work. • Supermicro IPMI on MBD-X8DAH+-F-O motherboard. Keyboard and mouse do not work after booting Windows Server 2008 R2

  Hell Everyone, I built a server with the mentioned motherboard. I installed Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise on this server. IPMI is integrated on the motherboard with its own dedicated NIC. I've got that NIC configured with its own IP address. I can remote into it using IPMI, and I can remotely control the server settings before booting the OS ( BIOS, RAID configuration, etc). When the OS boots, I lose the mouse and keyboard. I cannot use the keyboard or mouse when installing the OS either. So the Keyboard and Mouse only work when no OS is loaded. Once the OS loads I lose it - that is my problem. I've been doing some research and trying a few things, but I have not been successful in fixing this issue. I may be wrong, but based on the things I've found online, it seems that the problem could be caused by the way the OS handles USB. The server is headless. There is no keyboard, mouse, or monitor plugged into it. When I boot up the OS and remote into it, I cannot see a mouse or keyboard listed in the Device Manager. Based on what I've read, it seems that the OS should detect a mouse and a keyboard when connecting remotely via IPMI. The following are the solutions I've tried. Nothing has worked so far: I've updated the firmware of the IPMI component to the latest firmware - 1.33. I made sure that the mouse mode was set to Absolute (Windows OS). I've loaded the factory defaults several times. I've enabled Port64h/60h Emulation under the USB settings in the BIOS. I've disabled USB legacy support in the BIOS. I made sure the firewall wasn't blocking IPMI (disabled the firewall). And that's about it. I've found threads in some forums from people having the same issue as me, but they were not running the same OS. They were either running Linux or FreeBSD. Most of them fixed their problem by selecting the right mouse mode (Linux in their case). There was one other that solved the problem by disabling USB Mass Storage mode. He stated "When I set it to disable USB Mass Storage when no image is loaded, the ukbd came alive, and I'm typing this on the IPMI Console. • Problems with XP, Office, and PC in general - any ideas?

  Hi all This may not make a whole lot of sense so pls bear with me... I am about to perform a routine check on one of my user's PC. Some background - the PC has a Xeon processor and 4Gb of RAM and running XP SP3 He has 2xHDD and pagefile is hosted on the secondary HDD (D:) and min/max values are set to 4096. NO pagefile on C: This user has 6 monitors so he has an NVIDIA Quadro NVS440 hosting 4xmonitors and an NVIDIA Quadro NVS290 hosting 2xmonitors. There is a video card driver from NVIDIA which is compatible with both NVS440 and NVS290 and he is on the latest version of that driver. (Note: Make of video cards are different - one is from leadtek and the other from Nvidia) He is a heavy Bloomberg, Outlook, Word, and Excel user and runs two Citrix applications. Other apps are FoxIt PDF and IE. Problems - Outlook and Excel frequently crashes - I am going to perform an Outlook and Excel repair and also check/remove unnecessary addins - will he lose any customizations if I repaired and chose "Restore my shortcuts while repairing" and do not select "Discard my customized settings and restore default settings". Does repair really repair anything? FYI - It stopped crashing ever since i moved a large spreadsheet he has open to his local HDD instead of over the network. This spreadsheet "refreshes" constantly as it is pulling live data to update cells and I suspect it was auto-saving so frequently that it caused crashes if saving over the network. At times, his right click completely fails to respond. His left click works fine but he can't right click on anything in any Window and even on the desktop. Sometimes, he needs to start to close certain applications such as Adobe and the right click will start functioning again. I removed Adobe and installed FoxIt as I figured it was a resource issue but I do not think so as he does have sufficient resources when the problem is happening. Sometimes he can't bring task manager up until he kills certain apps. Definitely sounds like a resource issue but I am not confident that is the root cause. Also not sure if this is related to one of the apps installed but his Start bar flickers (does not completely disappear) intermittently from time to time. The taskbar icons which are hidden appear and then get hidden again as if it was having "fits". I have performed reg scans, malware scans etc but problems do not go away. I am planning to perform sfc /scannow and office repair but would like to know if anyone has any other suggestions. What about setting a "small" pagefile on C:. I have heard that this is recommended and may be the reason why a minidmp file was not generated when he encountered a blue screen. Also, any feedback on his video cards? Do you think different models would cause problems? The drivers seem to work but he only has 2.5Gb out of 4Gb available RAM as I believe the video card chomped up a portion of this. I have recommended creating a new profile for him but due to the amount of customisations he has and the amount of time and effort it will take to get him up and running again, he prefers to bear with the problem than to go down that path. However, at least once a week, his PC acts up and I can't think of any other tools or techniques to rectify his problems. I guess we are at a stage where we just want to "stabilize" things so he won't encounter issues that frequently. Any feedback is very much appreciated.

• nconf nagios config no services defined

  I've setup Nagios core on OSX 10.7 server via macports fine. It seems to load fine and the sample config files all copied over to /opt/local/etc/nagios/objects/ fine and are specified correctly in the nagios.cfg file. I then installed nconf manually and got it running without much fight. Then I clicked on "Generate Nagios config" in nconf and get 1 warning and 4 errors. Any ideas what to double check? I did lots of googling and found nothing on this specific issue--so either I'm special (I'm not) or am overlooking something really simple. The path to nagios binary is listed as /opt/local/bin/nagios, if that matters. Also, all the nagios files are owned by nagios:nagios, wheras nconf files are owned by user, with only the directories/files specified in the nconf docs belonging to the _www user and/or group (things like output, temp, config, etc.). • ISP 5 Device Limit ... again

  Sorry for the delay in responding to the suggestions that were posted in my first question (ISP 5 Device Limit - double NAT the solution?). I've been travelling and have not been able to try anything. Below is what I've tried and where I have not been successful. Any more help gratefully appreciated. I figure I need to give a more comprehensive overview of what I've got and how it's set up. First of all - I am using all Apple products here. I am iMac, iPad, iPhone, Apple TV, Airport Express and Time Capsule. I used to like the way that it 'just worked'. Now I find that it requires a bit of encouragement before it 'just works'. So, as I stated in my original question; my ISP has a router in my building that is limiting me to 5 devices. I am hard wired into this router and I can neither access it physically nor logically (they won't let me access it). Also, I only appear to be able to connect to it through the LAN ports on my Time Capsule. Any device I connect appears to be on a rolling IP list with the following settings: Router 91.72.80.1 Devices then get assigned IPv4 addresses in the range (as far as I can see) from 91.72.80.2 onwards. SubNet Mask 255.255.255.0 DNS Servers 213.132.63.25, 80.227.2.4 I have my Time Capsule / Router in Bridge-Mode which means I am limited to the 5 devices and cannot use Guest Networks etc. What I've tried today. Static IPs: On all devices, I went from DHCP to Static and put in the same information when they had connected using DHCP. Somewhat surprisingly this did not work. None of the devices enjoyed any connection to the router and certainly no internet connection. Intentional Double-NAT - Time Capsule to 'DHCP and NAT': By selecting DHCP and NAT on my Router I was able to connect devices to my Time Capsule in the range 10.0.1.2 to 10.0.1.200. This offered no internet connectivity and didn't really help the situation. In this mode, however, I was able to force the devices - individually and laboriously - to look for the Router and previously listed DNSs by inputting the numbers from 'Bridge-mode' into the STATIC settings and then resetting the connection. The Router then appeared to assign a distinct IP address to the device and it worked on the network. I had this working for more than 5 devices. However, this is not a great solution because as soon as one of the mobile devices left the building it needed repointing to the Router. The connections were also not very stable. Especially when trying to hold onto a VPN. Spoofing a few MAC addresses: I'm afraid I don't really know what this would achieve, nor how to do it on an Apple device… So … I'm almost back at Square One. I have had to withdraw to the Bridge-Mode position again with the 5 device limit to see if there's a better course of action to follow. ANY help would be much appreciated. I am positive that I cannot be the only one suffering under this 5 device limit!

• Setting up home DNS with Ubuntu Server

  I have a webserver (with static IP 192.168.1.5), and I want to have my machines on my local network to be able to access it without modifying /etc/hosts (or equivalent for Windows/OSX). My router has Primary DNS server 192.168.1.5 Secondary DNS server 8.8.8.8 (Google's public DNS). Nginx is set up to server websites externally as *.example.com Internally, I want *.example.local to point to the server. My webserver has BIND9 installed, but I'm unsure of the settings. I've been through various contradicting tutorials, and so most of my settings have been clobbered. I've stripped out the lines which I'm confused about. The tutorials I looked at are http://tech.surveypoint.com/blog/installing-a-local-dns-server-behind-a-hardware-router/ and http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=236093 . They mostly differ on what should be put in /etc/bind/zones/db.example.local and /etc/bind/zones/db.192, so I've left the conflicting lines out below. Seen already the Windows SteadyState Handbook (with Windows Server 2008), but I'd like to know if anyone has tried this before, the limitations are the following: 1.
