• ODI 12c - Aggregating Data

  This posting will look at the aggregation component that was introduced in ODI 12c. For many ETL tool users this shouldn't be a big surprise, its a little different than ODI 11g but for good reason. You can use this component for composing data with relational like operations such as sum, average and so forth. Also, Oracle SQL supports special functions called Analytic SQL functions, you can use a specially configured aggregation component or the expression component for these now in ODI 12c. In database systems an aggregate transformation is a transformation where the values of multiple rows are grouped together as input on certain criteria to form a single value of more significant meaning - that's exactly the purpose of the aggregate component. In the image below you can see the aggregate component in action within a mapping, for how this and a few other examples are built look at the ODI 12c Aggregation Viewlet here - the viewlet illustrates a simple aggregation being built and then some Oracle analytic SQL such as AVG(EMP.SAL) OVER (PARTITION BY EMP.DEPTNO) built using both the aggregate component and the expression component. In 11g you used to just write the aggregate expression directly on the target, this made life easy for some cases, but it wan't a very obvious gesture plus had other drawbacks with ordering of transformations (agg before join/lookup. after set and so forth) and supporting analytic SQL for example - there are a lot of postings from creative folks working around this in 11g - anything from customizing KMs, to bypassing aggregation analysis in the ODI code generator. The aggregate component has a few interesting aspects. 1. Firstly and foremost it defines the attributes projected from it - ODI automatically will perform the grouping all you do is define the aggregation expressions for those columns aggregated. In 12c you can control this automatic grouping behavior so that you get the code you desire, so you can indicate that an attribute should not be included in the group by, that's what I did in the analytic SQL example using the aggregate component. 2. The component has a few other properties of interest; it has a HAVING clause and a manual group by clause. The HAVING clause includes a predicate used to filter rows resulting from the GROUP BY clause. Because it acts on the results of the GROUP BY clause, aggregation functions can be used in the HAVING clause predicate, in 11g the filter was overloaded and used for both having clause and filter clause, this is no longer the case. If a filter is after an aggregate, it is after the aggregate (not sometimes after, sometimes having).  3. The manual group by clause let's you use special database grouping grammar if you need to. For example Oracle has a wealth of highly specialized grouping capabilities for data warehousing such as the CUBE function. If you want to use specialized functions like that you can manually define the code here. The example below shows the use of a manual group from an example in the Oracle database data warehousing guide where the SUM aggregate function is used along with the CUBE function in the group by clause. The SQL I am trying to generate looks like the following from the data warehousing guide; SELECT channel_desc, calendar_month_desc, countries.country_iso_code,       TO_CHAR(SUM(amount_sold), '9,999,999,999') SALES$ FROM sales, customers, times, channels, countries WHERE sales.time_id=times.time_id AND sales.cust_id=customers.cust_id AND   sales.channel_id= channels.channel_id  AND customers.country_id = countries.country_id  AND channels.channel_desc IN   ('Direct Sales', 'Internet') AND times.calendar_month_desc IN   ('2000-09', '2000-10') AND countries.country_iso_code IN ('GB', 'US') GROUP BY CUBE(channel_desc, calendar_month_desc, countries.country_iso_code); I can capture the source datastores, the filters and joins using ODI's dataset (or as a traditional flow) which enables us to incrementally design the mapping and the aggregate component for the sum and group by as follows; In the above mapping you can see the joins and filters declared in ODI's dataset, allowing you to capture the relationships of the datastores required in an entity-relationship style just like ODI 11g. The mix of ODI's declarative design and the common flow design provides for a familiar design experience. The example below illustrates flow design (basic arbitrary ordering) - a table load where only the employees who have maximum commission are loaded into a target. The maximum commission is retrieved from the bonus datastore and there is a look using employees as the driving table and only those with maximum commission projected. Hopefully this has given you a taster for some of the new capabilities provided by the aggregate component in ODI 12c. In summary, the actions should be much more consistent in behavior and more easily discoverable for users, the use of the components in a flow graph also supports arbitrary designs and the tool (rather than the interface designer) takes care of the realization using ODI's knowledge modules. • The Middle of Every Project

  I read a quote somewhere “The middle of every successful project looks like a mess.” or something to that effect. I suppose the projects where the beginning, middle and end are a mess are the ones you need to watch out for. Right now we are in ramp up of the maintenance/support teams at a big project in the Nordics. We are facing a year of mixed mode operations, where we have production operations and the phased rollout to new locations in parallel. The support team supports, and the deployment team deploys. As usual the assumption right up to about a month or so before initial go-live was that the deployment team would carry the support. Not! Consequently we had a last minute scramble over the Christmas/New Year to fire up a support/maintenance team. While it is a bit messy and not perfect – the quality of the mess (I mean scramble) is not so bad. Weekly operational review with the operational delivery managers, written issue lists and assigned actions, candid discussions getting the problems on the table and documented, issues getting solved and moved off the table. So while the middle of a project might look like a mess (even the start) it is methodical use of project management tools of checklists and scheduled communication points that are helping us navigate out of the mess and bring it all under control.

• OWB 11gR2 &ndash; JDBC Helper Utility

  One of the common queries when importing the tables via JDBC with 11gR2 is determining why the import wizard doesn’t display the tables that you think it should. I often just use the script below to dump out the schemas, tables and columns that the JDBC driver is returning. This is useful in a few areas; to figure out what the schema name is returned to double check with the schema name you have used in the location (this is used in the DatabaseMetaData.getTables API call within the basic JDBC metadata import. to figure out the data types returned from the JDBC driver when you see columns skipped because of no datatype supported messages. also…I can do it via scripting and don’t need to recompile classes and stuff :-) Edit the tcl script and set the JDBC driver, the connection URL and the username and password (they are at the bottom of the script), the script then calls a basic tcl procedure which writes to standard out the schemas, tables and columns with various properties. For example I executed it using the XML JDBC driver from ODI over a simple customers XML file and it writes the following metadata; You can add more details as you need and execute from the OMBPlus panel within OWB. Download the sample tcl jdbc script here There is a bunch of really useful stuff on OTN documenting this area (start with the white paper here) that is worth checking out all related to the OWB SDK covering everything from platform definitions, custom metadata importers, application adapters, code templates etc. You can find a bunch of goodies on the OWB SDK here.

• Always disable the 8.3 name creation on Windows before installing WebCenter Content or WebLogic Server

  You should always disable the 8.3 name creation feature when installing WebCenter Content on a Windows platform. The installs will normally work without it disabled, but you will find the weird 8.3 file and directory names in all the config files. Disabling it can also improve performance. On Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 and above you can do it with this command: fsutil.exe behavior set disable8dot3 1 To make sure it is disabled you can run this command to check: fsutil.exe behavior query disable8dot3 If the 8.3 file name creation is disabled you will see the following output from the command: The registry state of NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation is 1 (Disable 8dot3 name creation on all volumes). • Converting a PV vm back into an HVM vm

  I have been doing some Oracle VM benchmark stuff in the last week or 2 in my off hours and yesterday I wanted to convert one of my VMs that was based on a paravirt kernel into a vm that just boots as a regular hardware virt VM with a standard x86-64 kernel. It took me a little while to figure out the fastest way so now that I have it pretty much down I wanted to share the steps. A PV kernel uses pygrub and a paravirt kernel image that lives on the vm image virtual disk. since this disk image does not have to be bootable it doesn't contain a boot sector and if you just restart the VM in hvm mode the virtual bios will just not do much as it can't start the boot process from disk The first thing I do is make a backup of my vm.cfg file :-) and then edit it as follows : the original file contains : bootloader = '/usr/bin/pygrub' I replace that with : acpi = 1 apic = 1 builder = 'hvm' device_model = '/usr/lib/xen/bin/qemu-dm' kernel = '/usr/lib/xen/boot/hvmloader' then changing the disk files. I change my xvd disks to hd disks and I copy over the iso image of my instal lDVD. In the case of my VM template it was based on OL5U4 So I downloaded Enterprise-R5-U4-Server-x86_64-dvd.iso and added it as a cd device. disk = ['file:/ovs/OVM_EL5U4_X86_64_11202RAC_PVM/System.img,xvda,w', 'file:/ovs/OVM_EL5U4_X86_64_11202RAC_PVM/Oracle11202RAC_x86_64-xvdb.img,xvdb,w', ] to disk = ['file:/ovs/OVM_EL5U4_X86_64_11202RAC_PVM/System.img,hda,w', 'file:/ovs/OVM_EL5U4_X86_64_11202RAC_PVM/Oracle11202RAC_x86_64-xvdb.img,hdb,w', 'file:/ovs/OVM_EL5U4_X86_64_11202RAC_PVM/Enterprise-R5-U4-Server-x86_64-dvd.iso, hdc:cdrom,r', ] boot='d' for the network devices (vifs) I change : vif = ['bridge=xenbr2,type=netfront'] to vif = ['bridge=xenbr2,type=ioemu'] That should do it. Next, inside the VM, I copy over the regular kernel rpm that I want to end up running in hvm mode. In this example case it was : kernel-2.6.18-164.0.0.0.1.el5.x8664.rpm. I will use that later on in the process. I put this kernel simply in /root At this point I just start the vm with xm create vm.cfg and start my vnc console to the vm console. Oracle Linux will boot from the iso image, I just go through the install steps and click on UPgrade existing (not re-install). Because the VM is the same as the ISO the install won't actually do anything and it will run through instantly. When the "Reboot" button pops up, don't reboot. Switch to the command prompt console. hi alt-f2 to go to the shell prompt. Now it's easy : umount /mnt/sysimage/boot cd /mnt/sysimage chroot . mount /dev/hda1 (if that was your /boot partition) export PATH=/sbin:$PATH (just to clean that up) edit /etc/modprobe.conf and comment out the xen modules (just put a # in front) Install grub. if your /boot is hda1 then that is (hd0,0) $ grub root (hd0,0) setup (hd0) exit grub now you have a good bootsector, grub installed and you have your grub.conf file Install the new kernel cd root (this is your old /root in your pv image) rpm -ivh remove (or comment out) boot='d' in your vm.cfg restart the VM and you should be good to go, regular grub should start and load your environment. Caveats : this assumes you used labels for your filesystems. if /etc/fstab were to have devices listed then you would have to rename these device before rebooting as well. If you had a /dev/xvda disk then this would be /dev/hda or /dev/sda. All in all it is a relatively short and simple process.

• The JavaServer Faces 2.2 viewAction Component

  Life just got easier for users of JavaServer Faces. In a new article, now up on otn/java, titled “New JavaServer Faces 2.2 Feature: The viewAction Component,” Tom McGinn, Oracle’s Principal Curriculum Developer for Oracle Server Technologies, explores the advantages offered by the JavaServer Faces 2.2 view action feature, which, according to McGinn, “simplifies the process for performing conditional checks on initial and postback requests, enables control over which phase of the lifecycle an action is performed in, and enables both implicit and declarative navigation.”As McGinn observes: “A view action operates like a button command (UICommand) component. By default, it is executed during the Invoke Application phase in response to an initial request. However, as you'll see, view actions can be invoked during any phase of the lifecycle and, optionally, during postback, making view actions well suited to performing preview checks.”McGinn explains that the JavaServer Faces 2.2 view action feature offers several advantages over the previous method of performing evaluations before a page is rendered:   * View actions can be triggered early on, before a full component tree is built, resulting in a lighter weight call.   * View action timing can be controlled.   * View actions can be used in the same context as the GET request.   * View actions support both implicit and explicit navigation.   * View actions support both non-faces (initial) and faces (postback) requests.Read the complete article here.
