  Im trying to learn libGDX (coming from XNA/MonoDevelop), and I'm making a super simple test game to get to know it better. I was wondering how to detect if the player sprite is outside of the screen and make it so it is impossible to go outside of the screen edges. In XNA you could do something like this: // Prevent player from moving off the left edge of the screen if (player.Position.X < 0) player.Position = new Vector2(0, player.Position.Y); How is this achieved in libgdx? I think it's the Stage that handles the 2D viewport in libgdx?   CERN scientists dropped a press release today indicating they’ve found a particle consistent with the long sought after Higgs Boson particle–the “God” particle, that could help radically refine our understanding of Standard Model of Particle Physics. For years scientists at CERN have been harnessing the power of the Large Hadron Collider to answer fundamental questions about the nature of particles and the universe around us. In the above video John Ellis, a theoretical physicist, answers the question “What is the Higgs Boson?” The video pairs nicely with the CERN press release: “We observe in our data clear signs of a new particle, at the level of 5 sigma, in the mass region around 126 GeV. The outstanding performance of the LHC and ATLAS and the huge efforts of many people have brought us to this exciting stage,” said ATLAS experiment spokesperson Fabiola Gianotti, “but a little more time is needed to prepare these results for publication.” “The results are preliminary but the 5 sigma signal at around 125 GeV we’re seeing is dramatic.   I have been blogging on Weblogs.asp.net for a while now. I don't remember when actually i got a berth on to Weblogs. I think it was MS Joe – Joe Stagner way back somewhere in 2005 or sometime around that time frame (i don't remember the exact dates) that he had opened up weblogs.asp.net blog space. I remember sending an email to him and i had got a space for myself. So far weblogs has been a great starting platform for me. After close to a decade in the industry (this is my 9 year in the industry) i finally realized that i too can write and i have been lately passionate about writing. So far i just have 15 posts under my belt and close to 5 community speaking sessions. I have been lately enjoying writing and community things that i decided to have my own identity on the web. Yes i have purchased my own domain and i have taken up a hosting for my own blog. My new web identity would be 2 domains under my name – www.kashyapas.com and www.lohithgn.com. I will be discontinuing writing on weblogs.asp.net and will be fulltime at www.kashyapas.com. My RSS feed at weblogs.asp.net has been redirected to point to my new site. So whoever had subscribed to my RSS will still be getting the updated content from my new site. So do drop into my new home and let me know your feedback. I believe that he first approach may quickly cause the intuitive/misleading code. • Steam freezes at login screen

  I have just installed Steam on Xubuntu, and after it finished installing it went to the login screen, but the screen is frozen, and I cannot press the buttons. • SharePoint 2007 Parser Error after updating master page

  A few weeks ago I was updating the master page for a SharePoint 2007 (WSS) site.  The client wanted the site updated to reflect the new look and feel that is being applied to another set of sites in the organization. I created a new theme and master page, which I already wrote about here and here.  It worked well, except for a few pages on a subsite.  On those pages, I got the following error: Server Error in '/' Application. Parser Error Description: An error occurred during the parsing of a resource required to service this request. Please review the following specific parse error details and modify your source file appropriately. Parser Error Message: Code blocks are not allowed in this file.   I decided to go comb through my new master page and compare it to the existing master page that was already working.  After going through them line by line several times, I had no clue what would be causing the error because they were basically the same! It turns out, it was a combination of two things.  First, on a few of the pages in the site, there was some include code (basically an <% EVAL()%> snippet).  This was the code that was triggering my error “Code blocks are not allowed in this file”. However, this code was working fine with the previous master page. I decided to then try doing a full deployment of the site with the new master page, and it worked fine!  Apparently, if the master page is deployed using a Feature, then it is granted permission to allow code blocks, but if you upload pages either using web UI or SharePoint Designer, then the pages won’t be able to use code blocks. I haven’t been able to pin down the rules or official info about this, but I thought others might find it useful anyway.

• The Java Specialist: An Interview with Java Champion Heinz Kabutz

  Dr. Heinz Kabutz is well known for his Java Specialists’ Newsletter, initiated in November 2000, where he displays his acute grasp of the intricacies of the Java platform for an estimated 70,000 readers; for his work as a consultant; and for his workshops and trainings at his home on the Island of Crete where he has lived since 2006 -- where he is known to curl up on the beach with his laptop to hack away, in between dips in the Mediterranean. Kabutz was born of German parents and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, where he developed a love of programming in junior high school through his explorations on a ZX Spectrum computer. He received a B.S. from the University of Cape Town, and at 25, a Ph.D., both in computer science. He will be leading a two-hour hands-on lab session, HOL6500 – “Finding and Solving Java Deadlocks,” at this year’s JavaOne that will explore what causes deadlocks and how to solve them. Q: Tell us about your JavaOne plans.A: I am arriving on Sunday evening and have just one hands-on-lab to do on Monday morning. This is the first time that a non-Oracle team is doing a HOL at JavaOne under Oracle's stewardship and we are all a bit nervous about how it will turn out. I received quite a few angry emails from that one. I would have not earned that much from unsubscriptions. Most readers stay for a very long time.After Oracle bought Sun, the Java community held its breath for about two years whilst Oracle was figuring out what to do with Java. For a while, we were quite concerned that there was not much progress shown by Oracle. My newsletter still continued, but it was quite difficult finding new things to write about. We have probably about 70,000 readers, which is quite a small number for a Java publication. However, our readers are the top in the Java industry. So I don't mind having "only" 70000 readers, as long as they are the top 0.7%.Java concurrency is a very important topic that programmers think they should know about, but often neglect to fully understand. I continued writing about that and made some interesting discoveries. For example, in Issue 165, I showed how we can get thread starvation with the ReadWriteLock. This was a bug in Java 5, which was corrected in Java 6, but perhaps a bit too much. Whereas we could get starvation of writers in Java 5, in Java 6 we could now get starvation of readers. All of these interesting findings make their way into my courseware to help companies avoid these pitfalls.Another interesting discovery was how polymorphism works in the Server HotSpot compiler in Issue 157 and Issue 158. HotSpot can inline methods from interfaces that have only one implementation class in the JVM. And when we do, we need to know how to protect ourselves and how to solve tricky system errors.Knowing your IDE is also useful. Most IDEs have a ton of shortcuts, which can make you a lot more productive in moving code around. Another thing that is useful is being able to read GC logs. Maurice Naftalin's Lambda FAQ is quite a good start to document what you can do with them. I'm looking forward to finding all the interesting bugs that we will now get due to lambdas obscuring what is really going on underneath, just like we had with generics.I am quite impressed with what the team at Oracle did with OpenJDK's performance. A lot of the benchmarks now run faster.Hopefully Java 8 will come with JSR 310, the Date and Time API. It still boggles my mind that such an important API has been left out in the cold for so long.What I am not looking forward to is losing perm space. Even though some systems run out of perm space, at least the problem is contained and they usually manage to work around it. In most cases, this is due to a memory leak in that region of memory. • Data transfer between"main" site and secured virtual subsite

  I am currently working on a C# ASP.Net 3.5 website I wrote some years ago which consists of a "main" public site, and a sub-site which is our customer management application, using forms-based authentication. The sub-site is set up as a virtual folder in IIS and though it's a subfolder of "main", it functions as a separate web app which handles CRUD access to our customer database and is only accessible by our staff. The main site currently includes a form for new leads to fill in, which generates an email to our sales staff so they can contact them and convince them to become customers. If that process is successful, the staff manually enter the information from the email into the database. Not surprisingly, I now have a new requirement to feed the data from the new lead form directly into the database so staff can just check a box for instance to turn the lead into a customer. My question therefore is how to go about doing this? Possible options I've thought of: Move the new lead form into the customer database subsite (with authentication turned off). Add database handling code to the main site. (No, not seriously considering this duplication of effort! :) Design some mechanism (via REST?) so a webpage outside the customer database subsite can feed data into the customer database I'd welcome some suggestions on how to organise the code for this situation, preferably with extensibility in mind, and particularly if there are any options I haven't thought of. • Final Release of Silverlight Tools for Visual Studio 2010 Released

  If you haven’t already heard the news, the final release of the Silverlight Tools for Visual Studio 2010 have been released! That’s great news for Silverlight developers and to top it off the crew up at Microsoft even snuck in a few new features including intellisense for styles (a big deal in my opinion) and the ability to easily manipulate Grid rows and columns.  One of the most time consuming (and boring) tasks experienced by developers is also covered with the new “Go To Value Definition” feature that allows you to jump directly to style definitions with ease.  That feature alone is worth the upgrade especially if you’re working with a large application that uses a lot of styles. • Executive Edge: It's the end of work as we know it

  If you are at Oracle Open World, it has been an exciting couple of days from Larry's keynote to the events at the Executive Edge. The CSO Summit was included as a program within the Executive Edge this year. The day started with a great presentation from Joel Brenner, author of "America The Vulnerable", as he discussed the impact of state sponsored espionage on businesses. The opportunity for every business is to turn security into a business advantage. As we enter an in-hospitable security climate, every business has to adapt to the security climate change.  Amit Jasuja's presentation focused on how customers can secure the new digital experience. As every sector of the economy transforms to adapt to changing global economic pressures, every business has to adapt. For IT organizations, the biggest transformation will involve cloud, mobile and social. Organizations that can get security right in the "new work order" will have an advantage. It is truly the end of work as we know it.  The "new work order" means working anytime and anywhere. The office is anywhere we want it to be because work is not a place it is an activity. • Is there a pattern or best practice for passing a reference type to multiple classes vs a static class?

  My .NET application creates HTML files, and as such, the structure looks like variable myData BuildHomePage() variable graph = new BuildGraphPage(myData) variable table = BuildTablePage(myData) BuildGraphPage and BuildTablePage both require access data, the myData object. In the above example, I've passed the myData object to 2 constructors. This is what I'm doing now, in my current project. The myData object, and it's properties are all readonly. The problem is, the number of pages which will require this object has grown. In the real project, there are currently 4, but the new spec is to have about 20. Passing this object to the constructor of each new object and assigning it to a field is a little time consuming, but not a hardship! This poses the question whether it's better practice to continue as I have, or to refactor and create a new static class for myData which can be referenced from any where in my project. I guess my abilities to use Google are poor, because I did try and find an appropriate pattern as I am sure this type of design must be common place but my results returned nothing. Is there a pattern which is suited, or do best practices lean towards one implementation over another.
