  I have a remote computer on which I want to install a new hard drive for rsync backup. The problem is, I don't know what controller technology is used (PATA, SATA, SATA2, ...) and how many available slots are left. I want to spare me an unnecessary drive just for opening the chassis and looking into wires. How do I query the SATA or PATA controllers? • Problems installing 13.10 inside VMWare Player 4

  In the past I had no problems installing Ubuntu 12.04 inside VMWare Player 4.0.4 on my Windows 7 Pro machine. Now I installed Ubuntu 13.10 and have a couple of problems: the default screensize (even during the installation) is gigantic I've told Ubuntu to automatically login - after reboot the gigantic screen occurs without showing anything, without doing anything on mouse clicks, Ctrl+Alt+Backspace does not work switching to console using Ctrl+Alt+F1...F6 works, but is incredible slow invoking 'sudo reboot now' does not succeed, it prints Killing all remining processes... [fail] Restoring resolver state... [ OK ] Will now switch to single-user mode root@ubuntu1310:~# invoking now 'shutdown now' will soon show the same error. What I need to do to get Ubuntu 13.10 up and running in VMWare Player?

• Programmer logbook application?

  I've just released my application to the public, and I'm working on an updated version, but I really think I should keep track of ALL the code changes. In case some functionality suddenly starts failing, with a history of all the changes I made it would be a lot easier to figure out where I messed it up, in case the problem wasn't already there. The ideal would be to have a super fast computer with a huge hard drive and an application that automatically saves a backup of the whole project every time I change a line in the code, with some file comparison tool that would show me every difference between any two backed up projects, but that's not really possible for now. So, do you know any application that makes it easy for a programmer to keep track of the changes made to the source code?

• Installed fprint, can't login anymore

  Tried Fprint, was stupid enough not to backup the common-auth file before changing it. Somehow I'm locked out of the system, trying to fingerscan doesn't do any difference. Even when I've done it 5 times and it asks for password, when it asks for password and I write it in and it says that it's the wrong password. I use the same password for root as for my user. Tried to go into Recovery Mode - root - sudo nano /etc/pam.d/common-auth and remove the rows saying that you need the fingerprint to login, but when I try to overwrite, it says the file is read only, even when I try to open it with root. I have a lot of schoolwork files and programs on the system, so I can't afford losing them. Help?

• How do you accept arguments in the main.cpp file and reference another file?

  I have a basic understanding of programming and I currently learning C++. I'm in the beginning phases of building my own CLI program for ubuntu. However, I have hit a few snags and I was wondering if I could get some clarification. The program I am working on is called "sat" and will be available via command line only. I have the main.cpp. However, my real question is more of a "best practices" for programming/organization. When my program "sat" is invoked I want it to take additional arguments. Here is an example: > sat task subtask I'm not sure if the task should be in its own task.cpp file for better organization or if it should be a function in the main.cpp? If the task should be in its own file how do you accept arguments in the main.cpp file and reference the other file? Any thoughts on which method is preferred and reference material to backup the reasoning?

• Ubuntu 12.10 desktop/interface not showing on VirtualBox VM after login screen

  I'm having some trouble with getting my Ubuntu to work on a VirtualBox VM. I made a clean installation of Ubuntu 12.10 on a VM without any errors. I arrive at the login screen, as soon as I press enter it does it's little loading thingy and then screen goes black, then this is all I get: http://i.imgur.com/zULUI.jpg I can access the terminal and pretty much all the other features through it, but I would like to have the GUI properly working. I've been looking around the web and looking at various fixes to similar problems, but can't seem to get it to work. I'm thinking this problem might have to do with the graphics? I'm running Windows 8 Pro as host, if that helps, might be some compatibility issues with VirtualBox in W8... Thanks in advance!

• WIFI card intel r 2200 will not work

  I have installed 12.04 on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro. Wifi card does not work. Have tried various threads but none have the same problem.   I'm a java/android programmer, but I don't have any experience in game programming, I'm already reading proper books, like "Pro Android Games", but my concerns are more about the ideas behind game programming than the techniques themselves. I'm working on a 2D game, something like Cluedo to let you understand the genre. I would like to know how should I act with the "scenes", for example, a room with a desk, TV, windows and a lamp. I need to make some items tappable and others not. Is it common to use one image (invisible to the user) with every different item a different color, then call the getColor() method on the image? Or use one image as background, and separate images for all the items? If the latter, how can I set the positioning? and should I use imageView or imageButton? I'm sorry if those are really low quality questions, but as "outsider" ( I'm 23 and still finishing my university ) it's pretty hard learn alone.

  I am on the way to create a Live CD from scratch. I used Virtual Box for this purpose. I installed Ubuntu base from ubuntumini.iso and installed gnome-shell. And installed Remastersys and created a backup.iso. Burned in a CD and boot from a PC. It end in CLI. Not lead to GUI. I tried the same ISO in VirtualBox. But it work properly there. I think I missed some packages which help to start GUI. Can you help me to identify the packages missed to include in the CD?

  SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information I’m one of those weridos who lives in a Mac+PC world. I write code for both iOS and Windows platforms. I also travel quite a bit, and airlines and airport security are starting to weigh your carry ons, and beginning to frown on the powerplant of batteries you need to carry to power SharePoint on an airplane. This means, my main work machine has to be a Macbook Pro, since it is the only machine that can do both XCode and Visual Studio Virtualized and SharePoint virtualized nicely. • Not able to create screenshot of when menu is active [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Screenshot of active window doesn’t work I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and I am searching for a program that will let me to do screenshot of my menus too. Also, it will be very useful if I am able to "cut" only part of the new screenshot and save it as a new image. At this moment, when a menu is shown (for example I click on my clock and the calendar is shown) the "print screen" button is not working. • What is the ideal laptop for creative coding applications?

  Hi, I am a creative coder using C++(cinder and OpenFrameworks) I am looking to upgrade from my MacBook, which slowed down to about 3fps this morning. My project involves particles systems and fluids reacting to audio analysis data and computer vision data in real-time. SD or HD? no biggie. I have asked many people what computer I need. Ideally, I want a MacBook Pro. But is that enough power? • Is it possible to get dragging working on a Macbook multi-touch touch pad?

  I have a Macbook 5,1. That is to say that it is the only 13 inch aluminium Macbook as the later revisions were renamed Macbook Pro. Two-finger scrolling seems to work fine but dragging doesn't work. In OsX this works so that you point an object, click and keep your finger pressed on the touch pad while slide another finger to move the cursor. This causes weird and undefined behavior in Ubuntu as it seems the driver doesn't recognize this as dragging. Any ideas?

• Are unit tests really used as documentation?

  I cannot count the number of times I read statements in the vein of 'unit tests are a very important source of documentation of the code under test'. I do not deny they are true. But personally I haven't found myself using them as documentation, ever. For the typical frameworks I use, the method declarations document their behaviour and that's all I need. And I assume the unit tests backup everything stated in that documentation, plus likely some more internal stuff, so on one side it duplicates the ducumentation while on the other it might add some more that is irrelevant. So the question is: when are unit tests used as documentation? When the comments do not cover everything? By developpers extending the source? And what do they expose that can be useful and relevant that the documentation itself cannot expose?

• Wubi on Windows 8 without secure boot?

  I have a MacBook Pro. I've heard rumours that if Windows 8 is going to have this thing called "Secure boot", Wubi cannot work. At first I plan to install Ubuntu on my mac via Wubi(and windows via bootcamp), but since I can't find my Windows 7 Installation CD, I installed Windows 8 on my Mac and installed Ubuntu on a VM. Then suddenly Windows 8 Release Preview was released today so I decided to install over my existing copy of Windows 8 Consumer Preview. When I went to the Windows 8 Upgrade assistant, it said that the firmware on my Mac doesn't support Secure booting. I don't even know what it means, but since the Upgrade assistant said that the Mac cannot support secure booting, can I install Wubi successfully? And what is secure booting anyways? Any help will be appreciated.

• Will Apple abandon OpenCL?

  I am developing OpenCL applications, amongst others for MacOS. The new Macbook pro 13 inch comes with an Intel HD Graphics 3000 card so it seams reasonable to assume all their mainstream computers like Macbook and Mac mini will also come out with this Intel graphics card soon. OpenCL is not available for Intel graphics cards. Intel having a terrible reputation in developing graphics drivers and Apple knowing this makes me wonder Apple is abandoning OpenCL already again. Especially considering OpenCL should run anywhere, not only on high end systems. Developing applications only for the high end Macs with dedicated graphics hardware or for previous generation hardware with the Geforce 320M would not be a feasible option for me. Does anybody have any thoughts on this?

• Semi-transparent parts of theme show as full white

  I am running ubuntu 10.04 64bit on a macbook pro, using the nvidia-drivers version 260.19.29. As of a recent kernel update, all the semi-transparent parts of my theme show as full white. This means: no gradients on scrollbars and buttons, 'inverted' dividers in context menu's, full white gnome-do panel etc. Does anyone know what causes this and how I can fix it?
