• HtmlForm.Action and .Net Framework 2.0/3.5 Query

  Disappointingly, the members page for HtmlForm 2.0 is missing... My research seems to indicate that HtmlForm.Action is a property that was added in .Net Framework 3.5. However, I'm using VS2005 and my reference to System.Web (the namespace HtmlForm is under) is to a .Net Framework 2.0 runtime version. Further, my IIS status information also indicates I am using .Net Framework 2.0, when I force an error on my local IIS and read it. Despite this, I am able to use form1.Action successfully...but only on my local IIS. When I try it on vms and external servers, I get [MissingMethodException: Method not found: 'System.String System.Web.UI.HtmlControls.HtmlForm.get_Action()'.] errors. So, my question: 1) Why does it work on my local IIS? Does the fact that I have the 3.5 framework installed make a difference, here? 2) Why does it not work on other IIS? (I think this is because it's not part of .Net 2.0). I guess I just figure that if something is running on .Net Framework 2.0, the presence of 3.5 should not make a difference. Or maybe there's some other cause for these results.

• How to remove old indexed URLs from Google?

  I used Cs-cart for a site. Default installation SEO is not suitable for Turkish accented characters such as "ö" which maps to automatically "ae". Then I modified the php code and now it substitutes "ö" with "o" and "s"-"s" etc. Also I changed a category name to a better one. My problem is, google indexed both previous versions and new versions. Previous wrong urls gives 404 error. I used sitemap addon and send it to google and sitemap does not include wrong urls. However these old urls are still indexed on google. What can I do to remove them. For example http://www.google.com.tr/search?q=%C3%A7ak%C4%B1l+ta%C5%9Flar%C4%B1ndan+babil+site:eeski.com&hl=tr&client=firefox-a&hs=Z31&rls=com.ubuntu:en-US:official&filter=0 gives two top results old wrong url leads to 404: http://www.eeski.com/kitap-dergi/bilim-ve-teknik/cakl-talarndan-babil-kulesine-rakamlarn-evrensel-tarihi-ii.html right current url: http://www.eeski.com/kitap/bilim-ve-teknik/cakil-taslarindan-babil-kulesine-rakamlarin-evrensel-tarihi-ii.html What could I make google only index current urls stated on sitemap?

• C# sendkeys problem

The first click always results 0 (as expected). but from the second click, the result is unpredictable (but the sequence is still in order, e.g. 3, 4, 5, 10, 14, 15, ....) If I click the button fast enough, I was able to get the result in continuous order (0,1,2,3,4,....) but sometimes it produces more than 2 same numbers (e.g. 0,1,2,3,3,3,4,5,6,6,6,7,8,9,...) • Why is my Android app camera preview running out of memory on my AVD?

  I have yet to try this on an actual device, but expect similar results. Anyway, long story short, whenever I run my app on the emulator, it crashes due to an out of memory exception. My code really is essentially the same as the camera preview API demo from google, which runs perfectly fine. • Problem with DOMPDF and Kohana 3

  I have used DOMPDF many times before successfully, however outside of the Kohana Framework. I created a module for DOMPDF and called it simply pdf. I have even tried this basic HTML <html> <head> <title>PDF</title> </head> <body> please work </body> </html> Is this a known problem? I have not touched anything in dompdf_config.inc.php except uncomment out the error reporting levels so they now read error_reporting(E_STRICT | E_ALL); PHP is not reporting any errors. • Symfony / Doctrine - How to filter form field by property in related model

  I have a UserForm class which has a select list populated from a related model (specified by a foreign relationship in the yml) like so: $this->setWidget('report_id', new sfWidgetFormDoctrineChoice(array('model' => $this->getRelatedModelName('Report')))); I'd like to filter the Report objects that come from this relation by one of the Report fields, "active" such that only Reports with active=1 appear in the form. I have a method, ReportTable::GetActiveReports() that performs the appropriate query and returns the filtered reports. So one option is to populate the Widget with the results of that function. Any tips on the syntax to do that? It seems to me the cleaner way is to use the UserFormFilter class to filter the reports by active=1 there. Unfortunately I couldn't find any documentation on how to use form filters (or really what they are), so maybe this is not the right solution. Is a Form Filter the appropriate tool for this job? It seems I should use the Doctrine_Record_Filter_Standard class as defined here: http://www.doctrine-project.org/api/orm/1.2/doctrine/doctrine_record_filter_standard.html But it's not clear to me the appropriate usage. • SQL statement with datetimepicker

  This should hopefully be a simple one. When using a date time picker in a windows form, I want an SQL statement to be carried out, like so: string sql = "SELECT * FROM Jobs WHERE JobDate = '" + dtpJobDate.Text + "'"; Unfortunately, this doesn't actually provide any results because the JobDate field is stored as a DateTime value. I'd like to be able to search for all records that are on this date, no matter what the time stored may be, any help? • Currency exchange rates for paypal

  Does anyone know a way to get the currency exchange rates for paypal? We have custom shopping cart and use Paypal (Website Payments Standard) to handle payments. Our 'home' currency is Euro, but we would like to present our customers the option to pay in different currencies (USD, CAD, AUD and GBP). PayPal offers the option to:     a) automatically convert our Euro quoted prices to, for example, USD upon checkout     b) checkout in USD directly With option a): We get paid in Euro, the customer pays for the currency exchange (good). The customer does not know what he/she is going to be charged in USD until checkout. (bad) With option b) The customer pays in USD, then the currency is converted into EUR and we pay the the currency exchange. The customer never has to worry about the different currencies (excellent) We do not know the exchange rate PayPal is going to use so we cannot quote the correct prices to our customer (showstopper) So my question is:   Does anybody know a way to get the PayPal exchange rates? or   Does anybody know how to make a good estimate? Update: PayPal updates it's exchange rate 2 times a day. (at least, that is what they state). They use the Interbank Exchange Rate provided by ??? and add a 2.5% spread above this rate to determine their retail foreign exchange rates. Unforunately, there the Interbank Exchange Rates vary from source to source and from minute to minute. We have been monitoring the PayPal exchange rates and cross referenced them with the Official reference rates provides by the European Central Bank. the results vary widely, somewhere from 1 to 6 ! percent...

• Using NSNumberFormatter to get a decimal value from an international currency string

  It seems that the NSNumberFormatter can't parse Euro (and probably other) currency strings into a numerical type. Can someone please prove me wrong. I'm attempting to use the following to get a numeric amount from a currency string: NSNumberFormatter *currencyFormatter = [[[NSNumberFormatter alloc] init] autorelease]; [currencyFormatter setNumberStyle:NSNumberFormatterCurrencyStyle]; NSNumber *currencyNumber = [currencyFormatter numberFromString:currencyString]; This works fine for UK and US currency amounts. It even deals with $ and £ and thousands separators with no problems. However, when I use it with euro currency amounts (with the Region Format set to France or Germany in the settings app) it returns an empty string. All of the following strings fail: 12,34 € 12,34 12.345,67 € 12.345,67 It's worth noting that these strings match exactly what comes out of the NSNumberFormatter's stringFromNumber method when using the corresponding locale. Setting the Region Format to France in the settings app, then setting currencyNumber to 12.34 in the following code, results in currencyString being set to '12,34 €' : NSNumberFormatter *currencyFormatter = [[[NSNumberFormatter alloc] init] autorelease]; [currencyFormatter setNumberStyle:NSNumberFormatterCurrencyStyle]; NSString *currencyString = [currencyFormatter stringFromNumber:currencyNumber]; It would obviously be fairly easy to hack around this problem specifically for the Euro but I'm hoping to sell this app in as many countries as possible and I'm thinking that a similar situation is bound to occur with other locales.   I am using Selenium RC with IE 6 and XPath locators are terribly slow. So I am trying to see if javascript-xpath actually speeds up things. But could not find enough/clear documentation on how to use native x- path libraries. On some runs the time taken for a locator is halved; while sometimes its randomly high. Am I missing any configuration step here? • Open mails in outlook from java using the protocol "mapi://"

  I developp a Java application using Windows Desktop Search from which I can retrieve some information about files on my computer such as urls (System.ItemUrl). An example of such url is file://c:/users/ausername/documents/aninterestingfile.txt for "normal" files. This field give also urls of mail items indexed from Outlook or Thunderbird. Thunderbird's items (only available using vista and seven) are also files (.wdseml). But outlook's items urls start with "mapi://" like : mapi://{S-1-5-21-1626573300-1364474481-487586288-1001}/[email protected]($b423dcd5)/0/Inbox/???????????????????????? The problem I have is opening the real item from Java in Outlook using this url. If I copy/paste it in the run dialog of Windows, it works ; it also works if I use "start" followed by the copied/pasted url in command line. The url seems to be encoded in UTF-16. I want to be able to write such code : String url = "mapi://{S-1-5-21-1626573300-1364474481-487586288-1001}/[email protected]($b423dcd5)/0/Inbox/????????????????????????"; Runtime.getRuntime().exec("cmd.exe /C start " + url); I doesn't work and I've tried other solutions like : String start = "start"; String url = "mapi://{S-1-5-21-1626573300-1364474481-487586288-1001}/[email protected]($b423dcd5)/0/Inbox/????????????????????????"; FileOutputStream fos = new FileOutputStream(new File("test.bat"); fos.write(start.getBytes("UTF16"); fos.write(url.getBytes("UTF16")); fos.close(); Runtime.getRuntime().exec("cmd.exe /C test.bat"); without any success. Using the solution above, the file "test.bat" contains the correct url and the "start" command, but the run of "test.bat" results in the well known error message : '¦' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Has anybody an idea to be able to open "mapi://" items from Java ?

• fluent nhibernate select n+1 problem

  I have a fairly deep object graph (5-6 nodes), and as I traverse portions of it NHProf is telling me I've got a "Select N+1" problem (which I do). The two solutions I'm aware of are Eager load children Break apart my object graph (and eager load) I don't really want to do either of these (although I may break the graph apart later as I forsee it growing) For now.... Is it possible to tell NHibernate (with fluentnhib) that whenever i try to access children, to load them all in one go, instead of selectn+1ing as i iterate over them? I'm also getting "unbounded results set"s, which is presumably the same problem (or rather, will be solved by the above solution if possible). Each child collection (throughout the graph) will only ever have about 20 members, but 20^5 is a lot, so i dont want to eager load everything when i get the root, but simply get all of a child collection whenever i go near it Edit: an afterthought.... what if i want to introduce paging when i want to render children? do i HAVE to break my object graph here, or is there some sneakyness i can employ to solve all these issues?

• When is LINQ (to objects) Overused?

  My career started as a hard-core functional-paradigm developer (LISP), and now I'm a hard-care .net/C# developer. Of course I'm enamored with LINQ. However, I also believe in (1) using the right tool for the job and (2) preserving the KISS principle: of the 60+ engineers I work with, perhaps only 20% have hours of LINQ / functional paradigm experience, and 5% have 6 to 12 months of such experience. In short, I feel compelled to stay away from LINQ unless I'm hampered in achieving a goal without it (wherein replacing 3 lines of O-O code with one line of LINQ is not a "goal"). But now one of the engineers, having 12 months LINQ / functional-paradigm experience, is using LINQ to objects, or at least lambda expressions anyway, in every conceivable location in production code. My various appeals to the KISS principle have not yielded any results. Therefore... What published studies can I next appeal to? What "coding standard" guideline have others concocted with some success? Are there published LINQ performance issues I could point out? In short, I'm trying to achieve my first goal - KISS - by indirect persuasion. Of course this problem could be extended to countless other areas (such as overuse of extension methods). • CKEditor plugin to close editor

  The problem with destroying the editor from within a plugin, is that certain code tries to use the editor after the destructive plugin code, when in fact the editor is no longer there, causing errors and instability. I have come up with the following code for a plugin which closes the editor using both async:true and setTimeout: var cancelAddCmd = { modes : { wysiwyg:1, source:1 }, async: true, exec : function( editor ) { if(confirm('Are you sure you want to cancel editing and discard all content?')) setTimeout(function() { editor.destroy(); }, 100); } }; The problem I see is that it uses a dodgy setTimout call that would likely have mixed results depending on the computer's speed of execution - 100ms might not have passed by the time it would be OK to destroy the editor. Is there a proper way to destroy the editor from within a plugin? Even with async: true; and no setTimeout errors are created. Maybe a possible solution would be to stop any existing/any more code related to the editor from running afterwards, if possible? I have tried using events, like on('afterCommandExec', function(){ editor.destroy(); }) and some other events, but that hasn't helped much... doesn't seem like there is an event for when the editor has jumped out of its stack call for handling the button. And there is no way to stop execution by disposing of the CKEditor instance more properly?

• Unable to install Management Studio Express 2008 due to Visual Studio 2008 installation

  I am attempting to install Managment Studio Express 2008 on a Win7 system that already has Visual Studio 2008 installed. I have installed VS 2008 SP1, which results in the About box for Visual Studio giving a version of 9.0.30792.1 SP. When I attempt the Management Studio installation I see a message that tells me that I must install SP1. However, this is already installed. After a fair bit of searching I came across the link below, where someone had commented with a command line option for the installation executable that forced it to skip the check. However, this simply pushed the error to later in the installation process. http://www.thushanfernando.com/index.php/2008/08/10/fix-rule-previous-releases-of-microsoft-visual-studio-2008-failed/. This seems to be a perennial problem for Microsoft. I can't remember a time when I've painlessly installed both Management Studio and Visual Studio. I can't imagine that this is an unusual combination, after all! Anyone had any success in solving this problem before I take on the day-long task of uninstalling and reinstalling Visual Studio and all its associated bits?

• Multithreaded search with UISearchDisplayController

  I'm sort of new to any sort of multithreading and simply can't seem to get a simple search method working on a background thread properly. Everything seems to be in order with an NSAutoreleasePool and the UI being updated on the main thread. The app doesn't crash and does perform a search in the background but the search results yield the several of the same items several times depending on how fast I type it in. The search works properly without the multithreading (which is commented out), but is very slow because of the large amounts of data I am working with. • ServerIdentity memory leak with IHttpAsyncHandler

  I have a .NET web application that consists of a single HTTP handler class that implements IHttpAsyncHandler. All requests to this handler are handled asynchronously, though some requests are short-lived and some are long-lived (nothing over a few seconds). The problem is that memory consumption grows over time as requests are handled. All profiling results point to an unbounded growth of String objects held by instances of System.Runtime.Remoting.ServerIdentity. Every String value is different, but they all look similar to: /dd41c00e_1566_4702_b660_c81cdea18a43/vigefresi5pfv8n0ekddg57z_1154.rem There is nothing in my application that uses ServerIdentity directly, and unless I am mistaken, the ServerIdentity instances are proportional to the number of incoming requests. If this is an internal .NET structure, it looks like the CLR is not cleaning up after itself. What could be causing the leak? UPDATE A little less than half of the String objects are being held by System.Runtime.Remoting. The remaining String objects are being held by System.Runtime.Serialization and look similar to: +1sgess5rjcrgbmp3kqr6bmv_3474.rem Also, the problem only seems to occur when lots of simultaneous HTTP web requests arrive.

• Big and Little endian question

  I have the following code: // Incrementer datastores.cmtDatastores.u32Region[0] += 1; // Decrementer datastores.cmtDatastores.u32Region[1] = (datastores.cmtDatastores.u32Region[1] == 0) ? 10 : datastores.cmtDatastores.u32Region[1] - 1; // Toggler datastores.cmtDatastores.u32Region[2] = (datastores.cmtDatastores.u32Region[2] == 0x0000) ? 0xFFFF : 0x0000; The u32Region array is an unsigned int array that is part of a struct. Later in the code I convert this array to Big endian format: unsigned long *swapL = (unsigned long*)&datastores.cmtDatastores.u32Region[50]; for (int i=0;i<50;i++) { swapL[i] = _byteswap_ulong(swapL[i]); } This entire code snippet is part of a loop that repeats indefinitely. It is a contrived program that increments one element, decrements another and toggles a third element. The array is then sent via TCP to another machine that unpacks this data. The first loop works fine. After that, since the data is in big endian format, when I "increment", "decrement", and "toggle", the values are incorrect. Obviously, if in the first loop datastores.cmtDatastores.u32Region[0] += 1; results in 1, the second loop it should be 2, but it's not. It is adding the number 1(little endian) to the number in datastores.cmtDatastores.u32Region[0](big endian). I guess I have to revert back to little endian at the start of every loop, but it appears there should be an easier way to do this. Any thoughts? Thanks, Bobby

• How do I remove accents from characters in a PHP string?

  I'm attempting to remove accents from characters in PHP string as the first step to making the string usable in a URL. I'm using the following code: $input = "Fóø Bår"; setlocale(LC_ALL, "en_US.utf8"); $output = iconv("utf-8", "ascii//TRANSLIT", $input); print($output); The output I would expect would be something like this: F'oo Bar However, instead of the accented characters being transliterated they are replaced with question marks: F?? B?r Everything I can find online indicates that setting the locale will fix this problem, however I'm already doing this. I've already checked the following details: The locale I am setting is supported by the server (included in the list produced by locale -a) The source and target encodings (UTF-8 and ASCII) are supported by the server's version of iconv (included in the list produced by iconv -l) The input string is UTF-8 encoded (verified using PHP's mb_check_encoding function, as suggested in the answer by mercator) The call to setlocale is successful (it returns 'en_US.utf8' rather than FALSE) The cause of the problem: The server is using the wrong implementation of iconv. It has the glibc version instead of the required libiconv version. Note that the iconv function on some systems may not work as you expect. In such case, it'd be a good idea to install the GNU libiconv library. It will most likely end up with more consistent results. – PHP manual's introduction to iconv Details about the iconv implementation that is used by PHP are included in the output of the phpinfo function. (I'm not able to re-compile PHP with the correct iconv library on the server I'm working with for this project so the answer I've accepted below is the one that was most useful for removing accents without iconv support.)

• Simulating aspects of static-typing in a duck-typed language

  In my current job I'm building a suite of Perl scripts that depend heavily on objects. (using Perl's bless() on a Hash to get as close to OO as possible) Now, for lack of a better way of putting this, most programmers at my company aren't very smart. Worse, they don't like reading documentation and seem to have a problem understanding other people's code. Cowboy coding is the game here. Whenever they encounter a problem and try to fix it, they come up with a horrendous solution that actually solves nothing and usually makes it worse. This results in me, frankly, not trusting them with code written in duck typed language. As an example, I see too many problems with them not getting an explicit error for misusing objects. For instance, if type A has member foo, and they do something like, instance->goo, they aren't going to see the problem immediately. It will return a null/undefined value, and they will probably waste an hour finding the cause. Then end up changing something else because they didn't properly identify the original problem. So I'm brainstorming for a way to keep my scripting language (its rapid development is an advantage) but give an explicit error message when an an object isn't used properly. I realize that since there isn't a compile stage or static typing, the error will have to be at run time. I'm fine with this, so long as the user gets a very explicit notice saying "this object doesn't have X" As part of my solution, I don't want it to be required that they check if a method/variable exists before trying to use it. Even though my work is in Perl, I think this can be language agnostic.
