• Locating Rogue Perl Script

  I've been trying to source the location of a perl script which is causing havoc on a server which i control. I'm also trying to find out exactly how this script was installed on the server - my best guess is through a wordpress exploit. The server is a basic web setup running Ubuntu 9.04, Apache and MySQL. I use IPTables for firewall, the site runs around 20 sites and the load never really creeps above 0.7. From what i can see the script is making outbound connection to other servers (most likely trying to brute force entry). • Network authentication + roaming home directory - which technology should I look into using?

  I'm looking into software which provides a user with a single identity across multiple computers. That is, a user should have the same permissions on each computer, and the user should have access to all of his or her files (roaming home directory) on each computer. There seem to be many solutions for this general idea, but I'm trying to determine the best one for me. Here are some details along with requirements: The network of machines are Amazon EC2 instances running Ubuntu. We access the machines with SSH. Some machines on this LAN may have different uses, but I am only discussing machines for a certain use (running a multi-tenancy platform). The system will not necessarily have a constant amount of machines. We may have to permanently or temporarily alter the amount of machines running. This is the the reason why I'm looking into centralized authentication/storage. The implementation of this effect should be a secure one. We're unsure if users will have direct shell access, but their software will potentially be running (under restricted Linux user names, of course) on our systems, which is as good as direct shell access. Let's assume that their software could potentially be malicious for the sake of security. I have heard of several technologies/combinations to achieve my goal, but I'm unsure of the ramifications of each. An older ServerFault post recommended NFS & NIS, though the combination has security problems according to this old article by Symantec. The article suggests moving to NIS+, but, as it is old, this Wikipedia article has cited statements suggesting a trending away from NIS+ by Sun. The recommended replacement is another thing I have heard of... LDAP. It looks like LDAP can be used to save user information in a centralized location on a network. NFS would still need to be used to cover the 'roaming home folder' requirement, but I see references of them being used together. Since the Symantec article pointed out security problems in both NIS and NFS, is there software to replace NFS, or should I heed that article's suggestions for locking it down? I'm tending toward LDAP because another fundamental piece of our architecture, RabbitMQ, has a authentication/authorization plugin for LDAP. RabbitMQ will be accessible in a restricted manner to users on the system, so I would like to tie the security systems together if possible. Kerberos is another secure authentication protocol that I have heard of. I learned a bit about it some years ago in a cryptography class but don't remember much about it. I have seen suggestions online that it can be combined with LDAP in several ways. Is this necessary? What are the security risks of LDAP without Kerberos? I also remember Kerberos being used in another piece of software developed by Carnegie Mellon University... Andrew File System, or AFS. OpenAFS is available for use, though its setup seems a bit complicated. At my university, AFS provides both requirements... I can log in to any machine, and my "AFS folder" is always available (at least when I acquire an AFS token). Along with suggestions for which path I should look into, does anybody have any guides which were particularly helpful? As the bold text pointed out, LDAP looks to be the best choice, but I'm particularly interested in the implementation details (Keberos? NFS?) with respect to security.

  Alright I have a Biostar TA790GX3A2+ Mobo 2x Seagate 750Gb Hard drive (with 2 different speeds) an X4 9750 A GeForce 9800GT and 2GB RAM Hardware Specs link text I want to configure my computer with partitions in various RAID arrays. The Partitions I know i want (disk letters are mostly for reference here) C: XP Boot D: XP Swap E: XP Run F: Games G: Data The Partitions I think I want (repeat caveat) H: small FAT for Win Legacy and DOS I: Linux J: Linux Swap K-?M?: Other Linux /whatever partitions N & O: Attic for D1 and D2 What I'd like to do, is have C: written on Disk 1 (D1),.. D: on D2,.. E: and F: striped on D1 & D2,.. G: mirrored or D1 & D2,.. I: on D2 (so i can just switch disc boot priority to open in Ubuntu),.. J: on D1,.. and H: somewhere low on D1 I am inexperienced with VMs, so i am unsure as to whether those run out of XP, or whether i need to reserve a primary partition for them. However, I think they would be preferable for testing new OS's to scheduling a partition for the same purpose. I'm also not married to XP, but -64 IS pretty important to me. QUestion Time 1) Ignoring the irrationality of it all, is such a configuration possible? If not, can some pseudo-approximation be achieved? 2) My RAID is software, isnt it? 3) How much should I short a 750GB HD? And should i use that space for my attics, or for my attics and something else, or for something else (.iso's perhaps?)? 4) if XP is striped on D1 & D2, will that interfere egregiously with my Swap writes on D2? If so, would striping both XP and Swap relieve (or at least mitigate) that issue? Should XP and Swap just be written normally on 2 different HDs? 5) Should I keep DL's and Drivers on E: (XP Run), F: (Games), or elsewhere? 6) Is 4GB enough for C:? 7) Is 30GB enough (or too much) for E:? 8) How much to reserve for the Linux and sub-Linux partitions? Also, where on the platter do you think i should put them? 9) Am I a fool to use FAT16 instead of FAT32 for H: because I'd rather run 95 than 98SE? If not, do you think 2GB or 4GB? 10) I cant predict what my Max Commit Charge will be, so recommendations for Pagefile size? 5GB? 12GB? 11) VMs, where do I run them? do they exacerbate anything? • Coda 2 and SCP uploading files with the wrong permission

  Currently I have a basic Ubuntu server running a website. The website is for a few students learning HTML/PHP and each student has their own account with a symbolic link to the shared website folder. Since the students are working on the website together, each user needs to be able to modify all the files (index.html for example). So I created a Webdev group containing all of the students with the default umask of 0002 set in their .bashrc (This allows newly created files to be 774). The shared folder is owned by the group Webdev with a chmod g+s so that new files/folders also belong to the group Webdev. The problem is that the students are using an IDE (Coda 2) and when they create a new file or folder using the IDE the file has the permissions of 644 on the server (not group writable). However when I make a new file through connecting with Cyberduck (SFTP client) the file permissions are 664 (as they should be). So I don't understand why Coda would be any different. However, after some trial and error I believe that Coda is first creating the file on local disk and then uploading that file to the server. On a mac by default a newly created file is 644. When the client uploads a file that's already 644 it stays 644 on the server side (umask is kind of useless in this situation). I've also tried creating ACL permissions for that folder but an uploaded file from my mac via SCP doesn't get the default ACL permissions. In Coda there is an option to change file permissions on a transfer. However this option seems to apply a chmod to all files being uploaded or saved. When one of students is modifying a file created by someone else when they try to upload the file or save it Coda tries to also do a chmod but fails because that user isn't the owner of the file. My current solution is using bindfs... I mount the shared web folder and bindfs sets permissions and group ownership of newly created files. However, bindfs seems to be a bit slow and I'm sure there is a better solution. Even if the students ditched Coda 2 and used Mac vim with scp the newly created files on the server would behave the same (644) which is default on the mac. Other options... 1) Either I teach the students to use (ssh/chmod) with their IDE to change their own file permissions when uploading. 2) I make all the students' Macs have the default umask of 0002 which would upload files with the right permissions. 3) Write a corn script to fix the file permissions every 5 to 15 minutes... (This option I think is the worst if students are working together at the same time). Is there any way that I could make all files that are uploaded via SCP have the default file permissions of 664 even though the uploaded file has a lower permission? (After hours of searching I don't think this is possible) I guess a corn script is my best option for novice users. I am using suhosin and have tried my best to plug the obvious stuff, since I'm the only user-- there's no SSH access except via pubkey on a non-standard port, there's no root access by SSH, no FTP server running, iptables is set to discard anything outside of basically port 80 or my SSH port (there's no mail server or anything else). • Memcached Lagging

  Let me preface this by saying that this is a followup question to this topic. That was "solved" by switching from Solaris (SmartOS) to Ubuntu for the memcached server. Now we've multiplied load by about 5x and are running into problems again. We are running a site that is doing about 1000 requests/minute, each request hits Memcached with approximately 3 reads and 1 write. So load is approximately 65 requests per second. Total data in the cache is about 37M, and each key contains a very small amount of data (a JSON-encoded array of integers amounting to less than 1K). We have setup a benchmarking script on these pages and fed the data into StatsD for logging. The problem is that there are spikes where Memcached takes a very long time to respond. These do not appear to correlate with spikes in traffic. What could be causing these spikes? Why would memcached take over a second to reply? We just booted up a second server to put in the pool and it didn't make any noticeable difference in the frequency or severity of the spikes. • Samba4 [homes] share

  I am having issues with the [homes] share. OS is Ubuntu 12.04. I've installed samba 4.0.3, bind9 dlz, ntp, winbind, everything but pam modules, and did all the tests from https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Samba_AD_DC_HOWTO. Running getent passwd and getent user work just fine. Creating a simple share works just fine too. I can manage the users, GPOs, and DNS from the windows mmc snap-ins. I can join winxp,7,8 to the domain and log on perfectly. I can change my passwords from windows, etc..etc.. I could say that everything is fine and be happy :) buuuut, no, home directories do not work. Searching in here, and on our good friend google I gathered that a simple [homes] read only = no path = /storage-server/users/ and mapping the user's home folder in dsa.msc to \\server-001\username or \\server-001\homes should get me a home share I could map for my user homedir. We just had a second assertion failure (different "in file", position, etc) while running a large set of inserts. After the first failure, MySQL restarted after a reboot only - after continuously looping on the same error after trying to recover. I decided to do a mysqlcheck with -o for optimize. Since these are all Innodb tables (very large tables, 60+GB) this would do an alter table on all tables.   I'm having an issue with a linux server. Once a week the running mysql instance hangs and there is no way to fully stop it. If I kill it, it remains in zombie status and init does not reap its pid. The server is used for staging deployments and some internal tools, so it's not under heavy load. I've also installed smartmontools and mcelog packages but none of them did report any issue. What can I do to track the cause of this issue? Now I need to configure iptables for network access. First of all I allow ssh sessions on port 8022 on the host system, then I allow all connections in state RELATED, ESTABLISHED. This is working ok. I install another system as guest, it's IP address is 192.168.10.2, and now I have two problems: I want to allow the access from this host to the outside world, cannot accomplish this. I can ssh from the host. I want to be able to ssh to the guest from the outside world using 8023 port. Cannot accomplish this. • PHP.ini does not load

  Ok this is probably just me not knowing enough about php but here it goes. I'm on Ubuntu Hardy. I have a custom compiled version of PHP which I have compiled with these parameters. ./configure --enable-soap --with-zlib --with-mysql --with-apxs2=[correct path] --with-config-file-path=[correct path] --with-mysqli --with-curlwrappers --with-curl --with-mcrypt I have used the command pecl install pecl_http to install the http.so extension. It is in the correct module directory for my php.ini. My php.ini is loading and I can change things within the ini and effect php. I have included the extension=http.so line in my php.ini. That worked fine. Until I added these compilation options in order to add imap --with-openssl --with-kerberos --with-imap --with-imap-ssl Which failed because I needed the c-client library which I fixed by apt-get install libc-client-dev After which php compiles fine and I have working imap support, woo. HOWEVER, now all my calls to HttpRequest which is part of the pecl_http extention in http.so result in Fatal error: Class 'HttpRequest' not found errors. I figure the http.so module is no longer loading for one reason or another but I cannot find any errors showing the reason. You might say "Have you tried undoing the new imap setup?" To which I will answer. Yes I have. I directly undid all my config changes and uninstalled the c-client library and I still can't get it to work. I thought that's weird... I have made no changes that would have resulted in this issue. After looking at that I have also discovered that not only is the http extension no longer loading but all my extensions loaded via php.ini are no longer loading. Can someone at least give me some further debugging steps? So far I have tried enabling all errors including startup errors in my php.ini which works for other errors, but I'm not seeing any startup errors either on command line or via apache. And yet again the php.ini appears to be being parsed given that if I run php_info() I get settings that are in the php.ini. Edit it appears that only some of the php.ini settings are being listened to. Is there a way to test my php.ini? Edit Edit It appears I am mistaken again and the php.ini is not being loaded at all any longer. However, If I run php_info() I get that it's looking for my php.ini in the correct location. Edit Edit Edit My config is at the config file path location below but it says no config file loaded. WTF Permission issue? It is currently 644 so everyone should be able to read it if not write it. I tried making it 777 and that didn't work.   I'm trying to setup an open v-switch inside my Ubuntu 12.04 Server VM. I have created three interfaces for this VM and I want to create a port mirror inside of the VM using these there interfaces and open v-switch. There are three Host-Only Adapters: eth0, eth1, eth2. The idea is that three other VM's will be connected to these adapters. One of these VM's will stream UDP video to eth0 and I want the vswitch'd VM to mirror those packets from eth0 onto eth1 and eth2. Each of the VM's connected to eth1 and eth2 will get the same video stream.
