• Is Visual Studio Tools for Applications part of Office 2007?

  The VSTO bit I understand. Visual Studio has the project templates to get you started with creating nice .NET based add-ins. But where is VSTA? I installed the SDK but it seems to be gears towards adding extensibility to your own applications. I had thought that VSTA was like the new VBA for Office 2007. Infopath 2007 seems to be VSTA enabled but I cannot seem to find where Excel 2007 is also VSTA enabled. Am I missing something?

• How to modify the Title Bar text for SQL Server Management Studio?

  Sometimes I keep multiple instances of SQL Server Management Studio 2005 open. I might have the dev database open in one, and the production database open in another. These appear in the Windows task bar with the text "Microsoft SQL Serve...", which means it's impossible to differentiate between them unless I open the window and scroll the Object Explorer up to see what server the window is actually connected to. Is ther any way that I can get the window to display the server name first, and then the name of the application? Like "Dev-DB.database_name - Microsoft SQL Serve..." or whatever?

• Why SQL Server Express 2008 install requires Visual Studio 2008 in checklist ?

  When installing SQL Server Express Edition 2008, checklist says "Previous version of Visual Studio 2008" and asked me to upgrade to sp1. Unfortunately sp1 for some reason refuses to install on my brand new pc (Windows 7). So why can't I just bypass this ? Why would SQL Server Express needs VS2008 to install that's insane. SQL Server install used to be as easy as 123, now it has become a nightmare like installing Oracle. Will I have to go back to Windows XP ?

  I'm writing a program that uses the textbox in visual C# to read a log file. When dealing with very large amounts of text, writing to the textbox is incredibly slow. The textbox also lacks many features. Are there any custom textbox controls that are faster, or even a sort of embedded editor (with ability to highlight certain words, indent, input bookmarks)? Many of the features I want are programmable, but it would be nice if there was a faster textbox or one that already had these features :) Thanks.

But now the brackets with properties (id, class) in html elements also have blood color: (ironically the same color here in Stackoverflow). As you can see, the end result is 4 tuples but it seems like it should be a fast join by using the available index after it limited it down with the name clause, although very complex.

  Hi everyone, here's my very simple question: merge() only takes two data frames as input. I need to merge a series of data frames from a list, using the same keys for every merge operation. Given a list named "test", I want to do something like: do.call("merge", test). I could write some kind of loop, but I'm wondering if there's a standard or built-in way to do this more efficiently. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks! • htaccess Redirect 301 problem .. all redirects with one string fail to redirect and 404

  So I have moved a website and am trying to 301 redirect everything, which I do quite often so this is a weird problem but probably something stupid I'm not seeing. ALL of my redirects are working fine, except any redirect that the first string starts with "/Dining" or "/dining" are failing. For example, this redirect works fine- Redirect 301 /healthfitness/teeth.cfm /healthcare/pretty-teeth ...as well as 100s of others. • Integrating Search Server 2008 Express with WSS 3.0

  I'm setting up the environment for an intranet using WSS (Windows SharePoint Services) 3.0. The catch is getting the environment configured to work with MS Search Server 2008 Express. Here's the environment I'd like to setup: A: Web Server; Win Server 2003 SP2; WSS 3.0 SP2; IIS 6.0; .NET 3.5 SP1 B: Search Server; Win Server 2003 SP2; WSS 3.0 SP2; IIS 6.0; .NET 3.5 SP1; Search Server 2008 Express C: Database Server; Win Server 2003 SP2; SQL Server 2000 SP3 - Admin db, Content db, Config db, Search db The question is whether 3 servers can be used like the above configuration or if the Search Server (B) has to be combined with (A) since we're using the free Express version of the Search Server. The documentation from MS doesn't make it clear either way. I can attack this problem with trial and error but would rather not. The bigger question is: What is the best practice for a WSS / Search Server installation?

• Separate "Year" to several worksheets according to one column....

  hello! This task is driving me mad... please help! Instead of manually type in the data, i have used VBA to find the year range, put into one column and delete all duplicate ones. But since excel could give more than 20 years, it would be tedious to do all the filtering manually. AND, now i need excel to separate the rows that contain the specific year range in any one the three columns and put them into a new sheet. e.g. The years that excel could find in the three columns(F:H) are ( 2001,2003,2006,2010, 2012,2020.....2033).. and they are pasted in column "S" in sheet 1. How could i tell excel create new sheets for the years ( sheets 2001, sheets 2003, sheet2006....),search through column (F:H) in sheet 1 to see if ANY of those columns contain that year, and paste them into the new sheet. To be more specific, in the newly created "Sheet 2001", the entire row where column(F:H) contains "2001" should be pasted. and in the newly created "Sheet 2033", the entire row where column(F:H) contains "2033" should be pasted.. The above is just an example to explain my problem. What is the standard approach to solve these kinds of timing issues? One idea would be to wait with the assertion until I get some event notification that my app has been stopped.

• How can I speed up Subversion checkins? (Using ANKH, latest, Visual Studio 2010)

  I've started working on a new web project with some friends... we are using the latest Subversion server (installed last week), the latest version of ANKH. My web project is a whapping 1.5 megabytes (that's with all images, css files, dll's after compiling, pdb files... etc). Checking in even super small changes (literally adding the letter "x" to a few files for testing)... takes FOREVER! (about 10 seconds - I almost killed myself). The ANKH client is measuring in BYTES PER SECOND ... BYTES? per second... I must be doing something wrong. Does anyone what config file has a joke totallyMessWithPeople=true so that I can turn that off or something? Oh, also, changing one "big" file of a super 10k gains speed up to nearly the speed of light (which is apparently 857 bytes per second). Help me obi wan kenobi, your my only hope! EDIT: As a note... my real work project that uses Visual Source Safe 2005 (I know, ouch) uploads files at about 200-500kbps from this very same computer/internet connection.

• How do I view the full content of a text or varchar(MAX) column in SQL Server 2008 Management Studio

  In this live SQL Server 2008 (build 10.0.1600) database, there's an Events table, which contains a text column named Details. (Yes, I realize this should actually be a varchar(MAX) column, but whoever set this database up did not do it that way.) This column contains very large logs of exceptions and associated JSON data that I'm trying to access through SQL Server Management Studio, but whenever I copy the results from the grid to a text editor, it truncates it at 43679 characters. I've read on various locations on the Internet that you can set your Maximum Characters Retrieved for XML Data in Tools > Options > Query Results > SQL Server > Results To Grid to Unlimited, and then perform a query such as this: select Convert(xml, Details) from Events where EventID = 13920 (Note that the data is column is not XML at all. CONVERTing the column to XML is merely a workaround I found from Googling that someone else has used to get around the limit SSMS has from retrieving data from a text or varchar(MAX) column.) However, after setting the option above, running the query, and clicking on the link in the result, I still get the following error: Unable to show XML. The following error happened: Unexpected end of file has occurred. Line 5, position 220160. One solution is to increase the number of characters retrieved from the server for XML data. To change this setting, on the Tools menu, click Options. So, any idea on how to access this data? Would converting the column to varchar(MAX) fix my woes?

• What Color is the Windows' System.Control? (Visual Studio Design View)

  In Visual Studio Design View, the selection of Form Colors in the Properties Pane are selectable from the "Custom", "Web", and "System" tabs. Of course, the color number can be used, too. When the "System" Tab is selected, the colors in the list depend on what type of Theme the Computer User has set on the PC. I'd like to stick with this, but I need to know how to "read in" the colors. I have controls that I create "on-the-fly" or often need to change a color back after getting the person's attention using a blink/flicker technique. How do I get the list of System Theme colors? Most forms have a BackColor that defaults to "Control", which looks like a very light gray under Windows 7, running the default Windows 7 Theme. I've managed to grab a color by physically reading the ARGB value in code, but I'd rather have a way to access the colors by their Theme Name, if that can be done. public Form1() { Color cControl = this.BackColor; Console.WriteLine(cControl.Name); // there is not always a name! } Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

• What is the process involved in viewing a webservice in a browser from within visual studio?

  I have created a new VS2008 ASP.Net Web service project, with the default name WebService1. If I right click on the Service1.asmx file and select 'View in Browser' what are the processes that go on to make this happen? I am asking because I have a situation where when I run this from a visual studio project started in our development shell (which sets up a common build environment) I cannot get the web service to show up in the browser. It starts the asp.net development server and creates a single file: C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\root\c43ddc22\268ae91b\hash\hash.web but when I start it from a stand alone project i get a whole slew of files in here: C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\root\edad4eee\d198cf0e\App_Web_defaultwsdlhelpgenerator.aspx.cdcab7d2.vicgkf94.dll C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\root\edad4eee\d198cf0e\service1.asmx.cdcab7d2.compiled etc etc I am trying to debug this but not really getting anywhere. i have inspected the output from VS but the only option I get is for the build output, which is basic and doesn't really contain any information that is useful. I have tried running both versions with DebugView running but no output there either. I would like to know if there are any log files I could look at, or if anyone has any suggestions on how I might be able to debug what is going wrong here? For completeness the output I get when it doesn't work is: Parser Error Description: An error occurred during the parsing of a resource required to service this request. • Does XAML work with file links in Visual Studio?

  I'm adding a new WPF project to an existing Visual Studio solution and would like to reuse a bunch of code (C# and xaml) from an existing project within the solution. I've created the new project and added existing files as follows: Right click project Add - Add Existing Item Find the file to reuse, use the arrow next to "Add" and "Add as Link" I now have a nice project set up with all the proper links. However, XAML chokes on these links. For example: <ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries> <ResourceDictionary Source="Resources\Elements\Buttons\Buttons.xaml" /> <ResourceDictionary Source="Resources\Elements\TextBox\TextBox.xaml" /> </ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries> The files "Buttons.xaml" and "TextBox.xaml" exist as links in my new project. The project builds, but when I run, I get the following XamlParseException: 'Resources\Elements\Buttons\Buttons.xaml' value cannot be assigned to property 'Source' of object 'System.Windows.ResourceDictionary'. Cannot locate resource 'resources/elements/buttons/buttons.xaml'. It seems like the XAML parser is requiring an actual copy of these XAML files to exist in my new project, instead of links. This is exactly what I'm trying to avoid. I want my project to share these files so that any changes get transferred to the other project without hunting and copying. Any insight is appreciated!

• Dell Optiplex 980 vs. Dell Studio XPS 9000?

  My company is allowing me to upgrade to either the XPS 9000 or the Optiplex 980. I haven't bought an Optiplex in over a decade, and the only thing I can remember is that the Optiplex is really meant for corporate IT environments, and we're not even close being large enough to have IT issues. I think the components might be of higher quality as well, like the motherboard and power supply. The XPS 9000 is about $150 cheaper than the Optiplex, but the Optiplex has 4GB more RAM, a 2nd video card, and an extra year of service. Seems like the Optiplex is a better deal overall, but since I haven't ever used one, I wanted to see what everyone else here thought.

• When I use SharePoint's export to spreadsheet (Excel), not all the columns appear

  We have several SharePoint (MOSS) lists with 100's of items so we use 'export to spreadsheet' to do the heavy editing. But, in the spreadsheet not all of the list columns appear. One example is all columns of the 'publishing HTML' type cannot be edited (or even seen) in either Excel 2003 or the web datasheet view. But, an SSIS can export/import these columns without issue. Is there a way to use Excel 2003/2007 or Access 03/07 to edit these columns. Is there another way to connect to these columns?

  Having a hard time migrating user mailboxes across 2 forests. I've set up ADMT 3.2, No dns issues and fully route-able between the domains etc. Have come to migrate user mailboxes and the exchange shell just comes back with ... We have ran this command on the Exchange 2010 server on the target domain and when asked giving the credentials of an admin in source domain in the format : sourcedomain\source_administrator Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks Rhys

  I’ve been trying everything; this is the last chance I have. I moved folders and files from an old Windows Server 2003 File Server to a new FS (Win Server 2008 R2) with DFS and ABE enabled. Now, a specific Shared Excel file is driving me crazy, out of a sudden, lots of times per day, users are getting the following error while opening that file: Filename.xlsx is locked for editing by ‘another user’. Open ‘Read-Only’ or, click ‘Notify’ to open.. I’ve already followed this, with no joy: http://blogs.technet.com/b/the_microsoft_excel_support_team_blog/archive/2012/05/14/the-definitive-locked-file-post.aspx In any case, I strongly think this is not client-related, since it never gave that problem in the past with Windows Server 2003. • virtual directory make file copy operation extremely slow on UNC Path (IIS 7.5 bug?)

  When i create a website/virtual directory pointing to UNC path, its make our file copy extremely slow on the UNC path. 6 seconds for file copy (~13 M) on the UNC path without any virtual directory/website pointing to it. over 1 mins. for file copy (same files ~13M) on the same UNC path with virtual directory/website pointing to it. All file copy operation run on web server side. Our setting as below: Web server - Windows Server standard R2 2008 / IIS 7.5 File server - Windows Server standard 2003 I have tested this case on 3 servers (Windows Server standard R2 2008 / IIS 7.5) and got same result. I also tested this case on 2 windows 2003 / IIS 6, it won't slow down the file copy. Is it IIS 7.5 bug? any patch/hotfix to solve this case? Thank you. Gordon
