• Metalanguage like BNF or XML-Schema to validate a tree-instance against a tree-model

  Hi! I'm implementing a new machine learning algorithm in Java that extracts a prototype datastructure from a set of structured datasets (tree-structure). As im developing a generic library for that purpose, i kept my design independent from concrete data-representations like XML. My problem now is that I need a way to define a data model, which is basically a ruleset describing valid trees, against which a set of trees is being matched. I thought of using BNF or a similar dialect. Basically I need a way to iterate through the space of all valid TreeNodes defined by the ModelTree (Like a search through the search space for algorithms like A*) so that i can compare my set of concrete trees with the model. I know that I'll have to deal with infinite spaces there but first things first. I know, it's rather tricky (and my sentences are pretty bumpy) but I would appreciate any clues. • Binding redirect problem in .net

  I have a class library called "MyAssembly" that is internally referencing a.dll, b.dll of version 3.1.1.0; I have build the project which outputed MyAssembly.dll. On a different system (box) I have created a web application project and referenced the MyAssembly.dll. the new system has new versions of a.dll and b.dll 4.0.0; I used binding redirect in web.config like below. But still unable to compile the web application. it says missing assembly reference a.dll, version 3.1.1.0. Could any body help in solving this issue? Thanks, Suresh

• How to manage maintenance/bug-fix branches in Subversion when setup projects need to be built?

  We have a suite of related products written in VB6, with some C# and VB.NET projects, and all the source is kept in a single Subversion repository. We haven't been using branches in Subversion (although we do tag releases now), and simply do all development in trunk, creating new releases when the trunk is stable enough. This causes no end of grief when we release a new version, issues are found with it, and we have already begun working on new features or major changes to the trunk. In the past, we would address this in one of two ways, depending on the severity of the issues and how stable we thought the trunk was: Hurry to stabilize the trunk, fix the issues, and then release a maintenance update based on the HEAD revision, but this had the side effect of releases that fixed the bugs but introduced new issues because of half-finished features or bugfixes that were in trunk. Make customers wait until the next official release, which is usually a few months. We want to change our policies to better deal with this situation. I was considering creating a "maintenance branch" in Subversion whenever I tag an official release. Then, new development would continue in trunk, and I can periodically merge specific fixes from trunk into the maintenance branch, and create a maintenance release when enough fixes are accumulated, while we continue to work on the next major update in parallel. I know we could also have a more stable trunk and create a branch for new updates instead, but keeping current development in trunk seems simpler to me. The major problem is that while we can easily branch the source code from a release tag and recompile it to get the binaries for that release, I'm not sure how to handle the setup and installer projects. We use QSetup to create all of our setup programs, and right now when we need to modify a setup project, we just edit the project file in-place (all the setup projects and any dependencies that we don't compile ourselves are stored on a separate server, and we make sure to always compile the setup projects on that machine only). However, since we may add or remove files to the setup as our code changes, there is no guarantee that today's setup projects will work with yesterday's source code. I was going to put all the QSetup projects in Subversion to deal with this, but I see some problems with this approach. I want the creation of setup programs to be as automated as possible, and at the very least, I want a separate build machine where I can build the release that I want (grabbing the code from Subversion first), grab the setup project for that release from Subversion, recompile the setup, and then copy the setup to another place on the network for QA testing and eventual release to customers. However, when someone needs to change a setup project (to add a new dependency that trunk now requires or to make other changes), there is a problem. If they treat it like a source file and check it out on their own machine to edit it, they won't be able to add files to the project unless they first copy the files they need to add to the build machine (so they are available to other developers), then copy all the other dependencies from the build machine to their machine, making sure to match the folder structure exactly. The issue here is that QSetup uses absolute paths for any files added to a setup project. However, this means installing a bunch of setup dependencies onto development machines, which seems messy (and which could destabilize the development environment if someone accidentally runs the setup project on their machine). Also, how do we manage third-party dependencies? For example, if the current maintenance branch used MSXML 3.0 and the trunk now requires MSXML 4.0, we can't go back and create a maintenance release if we have already replaced the MSXML library on the build machine with the latest version (assuming both versions have the same filename). The only solution I can think is to either put all the third-party dependencies in Subversion along with the source code, or to make sure we put different library versions in separate folders (i.e. C:\Setup\Dependencies\MSXML\v3.0 and C:\Setup\Dependencies\MSXML\v4.0). Is one way "better" or more common than the other? Are there any best practices for dealing with this situation? Basically, if we release v2.0 of our software, we want to be able to release v2.0.1, v2.0.2, and v.2.0.3 while we work on v2.1, but the whole setup/installation project and setup dependency issue is making this more complicated than the typical "just create a branch in Subversion and recompile as needed" answer.

• Play video in UIWebView from NSData

  Hello there, Does anybody know how to play a video in a UIVebView ? The video comes from the iphone library, when I pick it, I store it in core data as binary data. If i use the local url of the video it's working fine, the problem I have is that the this url refers to a folder named "tmp", and I don't know the lifetime of it. If I can get the real url of the video file it will be ok. //attachment is the core data object containing the data NSURL *url = [NSURL URLWithString:attachment.path]; [self.webView loadRequest:[NSURLRequest requestWithURL:url]]; I tried a solution that doesn't work: (i tried MIMETypes : "video/quicktime" and "video/mp4") [self.webView loadData:attachment.data MIMEType:@"video/mov" textEncodingName:nil baseURL:nil]; I think the second solution is the closest, and the problem comes from the MIMEType. • Why does CTFontCreateWithName != NULL on iPhone OS 3.1.3?

  I am following the instructions in the Apple dev docs: http://developer.apple.com/iphone/library/documentation/DeveloperTools/Conceptual/cross_development/Using/using.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/20002000-1114537 In this case, I'm trying to conditionally execute code, depending on whether or not CTFontCreateWithName is defined. Here is what I've reduced my test case down to: if (CTFontCreateWithName != NULL) NSLog(@"CTFontCreateWithName = %p", CTFontCreateWithName); This prints "CTFontCreateWithName = 0x0", which suggests that it's both NULL and not NULL at the same time. Even though CTFontCreateWithName != NULL evaluates to true, I get an error saying it can't resolve the symbol _CTFontCreateWithName once it gets to the line that uses it. Any ideas? Is %p not the correct way to print out the address of a function? For what it's worth, the example in their docs, UIGraphicsBeginPDFPage != NULL, evaluates to false, so it works for that one.

• Embedded ZXing - what am I missing?

  Hi all, Sorry if this has been answered before, but I am trying to make an application that will include the ability to scan barcodes on Android. I'm looking at using ZXing as the library, however, I want to embed the scanner in my application so that the user doesn't have to have the ZXing barcode scanner installed to use my application. From the description of ZXing, it sounds like this is possible. I've gotten as far as building ZXing, linking it into my project in Eclipse, then creating a new reader instance. However, I'm lost when it comes to starting the barcode reader and implementing the callbacks. IMO, this is when the documentation here gets hazy. If someone could explain how to use ZXing properly, that would be of great help. Cheers!

  Hello, I'm trying to export a profile from WAS 6.1 so that I can give it to other members of my team with all of the JNDI and Shared Library configurations in place. I've flowed a few IBM tutorials on this like http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21322309 (technically that is more a bug fix, but there is a similar page). I've tried to export the server using the "import" feature of the server in RAD 7. None of these options create a .car file with the resources sticking around. Does anyone know how to do this? • Export JPG out of Dicom File With mDCM

  Hello, I'm using mDCM with C# to view dicom tags, but I'm trying to convert the pixel data to a Bitmap and eventually out to a JPG file. I have read all of the posts on the mDCM Google Group on the subject and all of the code examples either don't work or are missing important lines of code. The image I am working with is a 16 bit monochrome1. I have tried using LockBits, SetPixel, and unsafe code in order to convert the pixel data to a Bitmap but all attempts fail. Does anyone have any code that could make this work. Thanks in advance P.S. Before anyone suggests trying something else like ClearCanvas, know that mDCM is the only library that suits my needs and ClearCanvas is WAY too bloated for what I need to do.

• Enumerating .NET assembly resources at runtime

  I have a resource assembly with image files in it that are built using Resource or Content build action. This makes these files accessible using the Uris. However I cannot find the way to enumerate such resources. If I set the build action to Embedded Resource it becomes possible to enumerate the files with the following code: string[] resources = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().GetManifestResourceNames(); but it in turn makes these files inaccessible using Uris. The question is - how to enumerate resources that are compiled with either Resource or Content build action? NOTE: As Thomas Levesque pointed out it is possible to enumerate such resources by leveraging the AssemblyAssociatedContentFileAttribute, but it seems to only work for WPF Application assemblies and not for class library ones. So the question is still open.

• Can iTextSharp export to JPEG?

  I need to be able to export PDF's that I am creating to JPEG, so that users can have a screenshot/thumbnail of the end product, which is faster than opening the whole PDF. I am running this on an ASP.NET website running in Medium Trust in the Rackspace Mosso Cloud. I have yet to find a library that will either work in Medium trust, or in the case of ABC PDF, which works great locally, wont load in Mosso. Maybe Mosso has a custom trust level? I know that iTextSharp works on Mosso, but I haven't been able to figure how to "screenshot" a single page of a PDF, or export a page to JPEG. Is there anyone out there who has done this before?

  I have a backend service and front-end services. They communicate via the trusted subsystem pattern. I want to transfer a username from the frontend to the backend and do this via username credentials as found here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms730288.aspx This does not work in our scenerio where the front-end builds a backend service channel factory via: channelFactory = new ChannelFactory<IBackEndService>(.....); Creating a new channel is done via die channel factory. I can only set the credentials one time after that I get an exception that the username object is read-only. channelFactory.Credentials.Username.Username = "myCoolFrontendUser"; var channel = channelFactory.CreateChannel(); Is there a way to create the channel factory only one time as this is expensive to create and then specify username credential when creating a channel?

• Dynamically building and updating Histograms with JFreeChart

  I've got a stream of incoming data that I would like to plot using a simple histogram. I don't know the range of values, or the proper resolution or bin width to use for the histogram. SimpleHistogramDataset provides some of this functionality, but I don't want to have to deal with catching exceptions in order to add new bins if the new value isn't covered. In addition, it doesn't easily allow me to rebuild the histogram using a different bin width (perhaps an integer multiples of some initial set width). Is there an easy way to accomplish this with JFreeChart or some alternate charting library, or am I going to have to write my own class here?

  Hi, LINQPad is amazing, particularly useful is the Dump() extension methods which renders objects and structs of almost any type, anonymous or not, to the console. Initially, when I moved to Visual Studio 2010, I tried to make my own Dump method using a delegate to get the values to render for anonymous types etc. It's getting pretty complicated though and whilst it was fun and educational at first what I need is a solid implementation. Having checked out the LinqPad code in reflector I am even more assured that I'm not going to get the implementation right. Is there a free library I can include to provide the Dump functionality? • Hex colors: Numeric representation for "transparent"?

  I am building a web CMS in which the user can choose colours for certain site elements. I would like to convert all colour values to hex to avoid any further formatting hassle ("rgb(x,y,z)" or named colours). I have found a good JS library for that. The only thing that I can't get into hex is "transparent". I need this when explicitly declaring an element as transparent, which in my experience can be different from not defining any value at all. Does anybody know whether this can be turned into some numeric form? Will I have to set up all processing instances to accept hex values or "transparent"? I can't think of any other way.

No disk-file access, only zip and unzip a string of values. there are ActiveX, using WinZIP and other client dependent software for ZIP, written in JS. but no pure algorithm implementation, is it really difficult or non-functional? i would use it for displaying KMZ files in a HTML page with the GMap object (google maps). The KMZ file is just a zipped KML file. I want to unzip a KMZ file and feed the KML to GMap.

  How do you handle source control setup of a project that has dependency on a separate framework or library? For example, Project A uses Framework B. Should Project A also include the code from Framework B in its repository? Is there a way for it to be included automatically from a different repository or would I have to updated it manually? What are the general approaches are usually taken for this scenario? Assume that I control the repositories for both Project A and Framework B and that the source code for both is not compiled. Any resources or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm currently using Subversion (on a very basic level), but I would like to switch to Mercurial so that I can try out Kiln with Fogbugz. Edit: In Mercurial, would you use parent repositories for this function?

  I'm pretty new at this. Tried to make sense of the manual page for mcrypt at PHP.net when I thought a good tutorial would do a better job. So I searched yet without anything substantial. I also tried one of the examples of using mcrypt to perform the encryption and decryption with 2 functions, but it gives a warning of "Size of key is too large for this algorithm". • Listening to the iPhone mic with SCListener and playing music at the same time: how?

  Hello, I am using Stephen Celis' SCListener class (for iPhone) to "listen" from the microphone, but I also need to be playing music at the same time using the MediaPlayer framework. However, when I start listening with SCListener, the music fades out and stops. I have set the kAudioSessionCategory_PlayAndRecord property on the audio session in SCListener, which should allow me to play audio and record audio at the same time, but as far as I can tell it has no effect. I'm confused, because according to other developers' results, this works just fine, but not for me. I'm thinking maybe the kAudioSessionCategory_PlayAndRecord property allows you to play sound and record if you're using the AVAudioPlayer framework or something to play the sound, but maybe not the MediaPlayer framework? This would be a problem for me because I need to play music from the user's iPod library, which, as far as I know is only possible to do using the MediaPlayer framework. Does anyone know how I can get around this problem? Thanks in advance!

Other than setting each property individually, is there an easy way to deserialize the XML into my object?
