• How to share code as open source?

  I have a little program that I wrote for a local group to handle a somewhat complicated scheduling issue for scheduling multiple meetings in multiple locations that change weekly according to certain criteria. It's a niche need, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are other groups that could use software like this. In fact, we've had requests from others for directions on starting a group like this, and if their groups get as big, they might also want special software to help with scheduling. I plan to continue developing the program and eventually make it an online web app, but a very simple alpha version is completed as a console app. I'd like to make it available as open source, but I have no idea what kind of process I should go through first. Right now, all I have is Java code, not even unit-tested thoroughly. I haven't shown the code to anyone else. There is no documentation. I don't know where I would put the code so others could access it. I don't know anything about licensing it. I don't know what kind of support people will expect from me if I release it as open source. I have no idea what else I should worry about. Can someone outline for me (or post an article(s) that outlines) the process of taking open source software from "coded" to "completed / available"? I really don't want to embarrass myself by doing things weirdly.

• How to visually "connect" skybox edges with terrain model

  I'm working on a simple airplane game where I use skybox cube rendered using disabled depth test. Very close to the bottom side of the skybox is my terrain model. What bothers me is that the terrain is not connected to the skybox bottom. This is not visible while the plane flies low, but as it gets some altitude, the terrain looks smaller because of the perspective. Since the skybox center is always same as the camera position, the skybox moves with the plane, but the terrain goes into the distance. Ok, I think you understand the problem. My question is how to fix it. It's an airplane game so limiting max altitude is not possible. I thought about some way to stretch terrain to always cover whole bottom side of the skybox cube, but that doesn't feel right and I don't even know how would I calculate new terrain dimensions every frame. • Script/tool to import series of snapshots, each being a new revision, into Subversion, populating source tree?

  I've developed code locally and taken a fairly regular snapshot whenever I reach a significant point in development, e.g. a working build. So I have a long-ish list of about 40 folders, each folder being a snapshot e.g. in ascending date YYYYMMDD order, e.g.:- 20100523 20100614 20100721 20100722 20100809 20100901 20101001 20101003 20101104 20101119 20101203 20101218 20110102 I'm looking for a script to import each of these snapshots as a new subversion revision to the source tree. The end result being that the HEAD revision is the same as the last snapshot, and other revisions are as numbered. Some other requirements: that the HEAD revision is not cumulative of the previous snapshots, i.e., files that appeared in older snapshots but which don't appear in later ones (e.g. due to refactoring etc.) should not appear in the HEAD revision. meanwhile, there should be continuity between files that do persist between snapshots. Subversion should know that there are previous versions of these files and not treat them as brand new files within each revision. Some background about my aim: I need to formally revision control this work rather than keep local private snapshot copies. I plan to release this work as open source, so version controlling would be highly recommended I am evaluating some of the current popular version control systems (Subversion and GIT) BUT I definitely need a working solution in Subversion. I'm not looking to be persuaded to use one particular tool, I need a solution for each tool I am considering as I would also like a solution in GIT (I will post an answer separately for GIT so separate camps of folks who have expertise in GIT and Subversion will be able to give focused answers on one or the other). • Seeking webcam with own IP address

  I am not sure if this is the correct place to post, but I couldn't find anywhere better. I am looking for a webcam/movie cam and this site seems more addressed to still images, but ... I am looking for a small, rugged web-cam which can be hand-held or perhaps head-mounted (failing that I can settle for a tripod mount, but I need portability). It must have its own IP address so that anyone can view its video stream from a web browser. I would prefer 2 way voice communication too. Encryption of data is nice, as is compression (H.264). Maybe also remote control, like causing it to zoom from the browser. Does anyone have any suggestions, even suggestions of somewhere else to look? Thanks very much in advance.

• MSDN Live 2010 &ndash; Delivered : 24 sessions (4 x 6) on Visual Studio and Team Foundation Server

  We (Mikael Nitell and me) got a whole track on the Norwegian MSDN Live tour this year.  We did these as a pair, and covered 4 cities over 4 days, 6 sessions per day, taking 8 hours to come through it.  The Islandic volcano made the travels a bit rough, but we managed 6 flights out of 8. The first one had to go by van instead, 7-8 hour drive each way together with other MSDN Live presenters – a memorable tour! Oslo was the absolute top point.  We had to change hall to a bigger one. People were crowding, and even the big hall was packed!  The presentations were mostly based on demos, but we had a few slides as well.  They have been uploaded to my SkyDrive.  Info to aliens – some of the text may be Norwegian. The sessions were as follows: Overview of news in Visual Studio and Team Foundation server 2010 Ensuring Quality with VS/TFS 2010 Releasing products with VS/TFS 2010 No More No Repro with VS/TFS 2010 Performance Testing and Parallel Programming with VS/TFS 2010 Migrating to VS/TFS 2010 Tips, tricks, news and some best practices with VS/TFS 2010   In the coming days, I will post up examples from the demos too, with explanations of how they are intended to work. • System fan connection on Mini-ITX server case and motherboard

  The case: Newegg listing for Chenbro ES34169-BK-120 The motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-D525TUD (Newegg has it as well but I can't post more than one link due to being a new user) As far as the question, the system fan I have no idea how to get these to connect to the motherboard. There are two connectors which then go to extension fan cables. So when you connect these, it should be good, but the extension cables are two connectors that go to the system fans and a female molex connector (if you click the Chenbro listing, look at the 6th picture and you'll see the two connections being made and the molex connector just kind of hanging out in the case). Is there a piece I'm missing to get it to connect to the 3 pin sys_fan section of the board? Thanks,

• C++ Numerical Recipes &ndash; A New Adventure!

  I am about to embark on a great journey – over the next 6 weeks I plan to read through C++ Numerical Recipes 3rd edition http://amzn.to/YtdpkS I'll be reading this with an eye to C++ AMP, thinking about implementing the suitable subset (non-recursive, additive, commutative) to run on the GPU. APIs supporting HPC, GPGPU or MapReduce are all useful – providing you have the ability to choose the correct algorithm to leverage on them. I really think this is the most fascinating area of programming – a lot more exciting than LOB CRUD !!! When you think about it , everything is a function – we categorize & we extrapolate. As abstractions get higher & less leaky, sooner or later information systems programming will become a non-programmer task – you will be using WYSIWYG designers to build: GUIs MVVM service mapping & virtualization workflows ORM Entity relations In the data source SharePoint / LightSwitch are not there yet, but every iteration gets closer. For information workers, managed code is a race to the bottom. As MS futures are a bit shaky right now, the provider agnostic nature & higher barriers of entry of both C++ & Numerical Analysis seem like a rational choice to me. Its also fascinating – stepping outside the box. This is not the first time I've delved into numerical analysis. 6 months ago I read Numerical methods with Applications, which can be found for free online: http://nm.mathforcollege.com/ 2 years ago I learned the .NET Extreme Optimization library www.extremeoptimization.com – not bad 2.5 years ago I read Schaums Numerical Analysis book http://amzn.to/V5yuLI - not an easy read, as topics jump back & forth across chapters: 3 years ago I read Practical Numerical Methods with C# http://amzn.to/V5yCL9 (which is a toy learning language for this kind of stuff) I also read through AI a Modern Approach 3rd edition END to END http://amzn.to/V5yQSp - this took me a few years but was the most rewarding experience. • Can I run AD commands from a standard PowerShell script?

  I am putting together a script to run post-sysprep. It should check if the machine is on the network, and if it is then it should query AD to see if a computer account exists with it's service tag (we're using these as the hostnames of the machines.) If it does exist, it should delete the account and rejoin the machine to the domain. I have got the majority of the script running, but need to run the following: Remove-ADComputer -Identity $distinguishedName How can I run this from the "standard" powershell environment? I don't want to use the AD module. (By the way - I'm on a mixed mode 2000/03 domain as we are in the process of upgrading to 2008) I'm new to PowerShell so be gentle if I'm completely missing the point! Thanks, Ben

• why does and EBS volumes mounted in an Ubuntu 12.04 EC2 instance as /dev/sdh1 appear as /dev/xvdh1?

  When mounting an EBS volume on ubuntu specified as /dev/sdh1 it actually mounts it at /dev/xvdh1. The aws console still thinks it's mounted at /dev/sdh1 so it took a while to realize that it was actually mounted, just in the wrong place I ran into this problem a long time ago using ubuntu on ec2. I just ran into it again https://forums.aws.amazon.com/post!reply.jspa?messageID=351382 and it seems like I'm not alone: https://forums.aws.amazon.com/thread.jspa?threadID=68957&tstart=0 I haven't found a good answer as to why this happens or how to fix it. Any ideas?

• How likely can my data be recovered after Windows CHKDSK performed on a degraded RAID 5 array?

  Hello there, We have a RAID 5 setup with 3 SATA disks, #2 went down as reported on the pre-POST screen. Unfortunately, for some reason out of my control, the system was rebooted with a degraded RAID :-O Windows XP (64-bit) loaded, CHKDSK ran automatically and done its recovery! From that point onwards, the following error prompts every time even in Safe Mode: lsass.exe - The endpoint format is invalid I took those 3 disks to the data recovery expert and need to wait at least 2-4 days for results. There are 2 VMs on multiple files stored in this RAID 5 array, and there's no backup! Sorry, I just inherited the system from an ex-staff who has left the company 2 months before I joined. How likely the data can be recovered?

  I'm new at SEO and keyword research. I am using Market Samurai as my research tool, and I was wondering if I could ask for your help to identify the best key word to target for my niche. I do plan on incorporating all of them into my site, but I wanted to start with one. If you could give me your input on these keywords, I would appreciate it. This is all new to me :) I'm too new to post pictures, but here are my keywords (Searches, SEO Traffic, and SEO Value / Day): Searches | SEO Traffic | PBR | SEO Value | Average PR/Backlinks of Current Top 10 1: 730 | 307 | 20% | 2311.33 | 1.9 / 7k-60k 2: 325 | 137 | 24% | 822.94 | 2.3 / 7k-60k 3: 398 | 167 | 82% | 589.79 | 1.6 / 7k-60k I'm wondering if the PBR (Phrase-to-broad) value of #1 is too low. It seems like the best value because the SEOV is crazy high. That is like $70k a month. #3 has the highest PBR, but also the lowest SEOV. #2 doesn't seem worth it because of the PR competetion. Might be a little too hard to get into the top page of Google. I'm wondering which keywords to target, and if I should be looking at any other metric to see if this is a profitable niche to jump into. Thanks.

• Silverstripe: How can I disable comments?

  My client site is built in Silverstripe, there is a news page, and it allows people to leave comments. Unfortunately we've got loads of spam emails. I'm new to this, is there any way we can disable the comment field by default? How do I do it? Alternatively is there easy way for me to install a spam protection? Update - Because this is someone else's code, I just realised that they have some sort of spam protection already, so we are trying to disable comments now. • Which iptables rule do you think is a 'must have'

  I have some basic iptable rules set up now for my vps. Just block everything except some default ports, 80,21,22,443. I do get brute forced a lot. I have heard that iptables is very powerful but I have not seen many use cases. Can you give me an example of a(some) rule(s) you always use and give a small example why. • Introducing the New Boot Framework in CE 7

  CE 7 introduces a new boot loader framework, BLDR (platform\common\src\common\bldr\). Some people like its powerful and flexbility, others may feel its too complicate as a boot loader framework. Despite to the favor, it is already there; so let's take a look at its features. Unlike the previous BL framwork (CE7 still provides it in platform\common\src\common\boot\) is a monolithic library, the new framework has more architecture structure. It not only defines main body but also provides rich components, such as filesystem (BinFS/FAT), download transportations, display, logging and block devices: bios INT13, FAL, IDE, Flash ( and etc. Note that in the block device category, the FAL is for legacy FMD/FAL, Flash is for latest MSFlash. Some of you may have encountered MSFlash MDD/PDD compatible partition is hard to created in bootloader and now it provides a clean solution! (Since this is a big topic, I will introduce it in future post) Today, I am going to show you some basic helper components - Image Loading functions. When OS image stored in the block device, it can be a file format, says your NK.BIN in the FAT volume or a RAW format, says the image is programmed to a BINFS partition. For the first one you can use BootFileSystemReadBinFile (platform\common\src\common\bldr\fileSystem\utils\fileSystemReadBinFile.c) and use BootBlockLoadBinFsImage (platform\common\src\common\bldr\block\utils\loadBinFs.c) to load from a partition. Need a sample code? No problem, the BootLoaderLoadOs in platform\cepc\src\boot\bldr\loados.c just provide a perfect example.

I have found many scripts and ideas to effect this but I require that it's not be a "drop-in" replacement, as in it must work globally for any possibly directory from one codebase. • AutoVue for Agile 20.2.2 Now Available!!

  We are happy to announce that AutoVue for Agile 20.2.2 is now available via the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud.   AutoVue for Agile 20.2.2 is a minor release within the 20.2 product family that is specifically targeted for users of Agile PLM 9. AutoVue 20.2.2 brings a number of improvements, including support for SolidWorks 2013, AutoCAD and Inventor 2014, SolidEdge ST5, and Cadence Allegro 16.6.   It also includes support for Adobe Illustrator CS4 and up.   Another improvement involves bringing our support for Oracle Linux and Java Virtual Machine versions in-line with Agile's support. Please see our previous post (https://blogs.oracle.com/enterprisevisualization/entry/autovue_20_2_2_is) for more details on the specifics introduced in AutoVue 20.2.2. • Is there a convenient way to manually copy the Log Shipping *.trn files from one SQL 2008 server to

  We have a remote SQL 2008 server (ServerB) that needs to keep a warm (15 minute interval is OK) copy of production data (ServerA). ServerA is also SQL 2008. Log Shipping looks like it will do the job. We can only get to the destination ServerB with remote desktop. Is there a way to set this up when we can't get to both servers from one Management Studio? We want to be able to temporarily (until a VPN is setup between our network and the ServerB network) manually export a small .trn file, copy it via remote desktop to ServerB and then manually import those transactions from the .trn file. My supervisor says he saw a post saying this is possible. We were just trying to avoid doing a full database backup and copying that every time. Thanks in advance for any suggestions on this.

• Documenting your database with Visual Studio 2012 SSDT tools

  The title of this post is interesting and something I am wishing you and your colleagues had a better way to do. I understand as I am asked this question frequently. I couple of weeks ago I was asked the same question by a customer who documents their database using the ApexSQL Doc tools which uses the extended properties on objects to create automated documentation. I thought that was super interesting and went down the path to see how we could could support the creation of this documentation while leveraging the Visual Studio 2012 SSDT Tools. What I found is was rather intriguing. There is a property called “Description” on all objects in the SSDT tools. This property is rather subtle and I am betting overlooked. To be honest, this property has probably been there for a while and I just never discovered it. Adding text to this '”Description” property it allows Visual Studio to create the commands for the extended properties directly to your schema which should be version controlled. As I did more digging there seemed to be extended properties at every level in the SQL database objects. This fills some rather challenging gaps and allows organizations to manage SQL Schema using the Visual Studio SQL database tools while allowing a way to automatically document the database. This will also work in the automation of the creation and alter scripts that can be generated as part f an automated build system. Now we essentially get a way to store, build and document the database in a nice little ALM package. Happy Coding!
