  • What Regex can strip e.g. "note:" and "firstName: " from the left of a string?

    - by Edward Tanguay
    I need to strip the "label" off the front of strings, e.g. note: this is a note needs to return: note and this is a note I've produced the following code example but am having trouble with the regexes. What code do I need in the two ???????? areas below so that I get the desired results shown in the comments? using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Text.RegularExpressions; namespace TestRegex8822 { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { List<string> lines = new List<string>(); lines.Add("note: this is a note"); lines.Add("test: just a test"); lines.Add("test:\t\t\tjust a test"); lines.Add("firstName: Jim"); //"firstName" IS a label because it does NOT contain a space lines.Add("She said this to him: follow me."); //this is NOT a label since there is a space before the colon lines.Add("description: this is the first description"); lines.Add("description:this is the second description"); //no space after colon lines.Add("this is a line with no label"); foreach (var line in lines) { Console.WriteLine(StringHelpers.GetLabelFromLine(line)); Console.WriteLine(StringHelpers.StripLabelFromLine(line)); Console.WriteLine("--"); //note //this is a note //-- //test //just a test //-- //test //just a test //-- //firstName //Jim //-- // //She said this to him: follow me. //-- //description //this is the first description //-- //description //this is the first description //-- // //this is a line with no label //-- } Console.ReadLine(); } } public static class StringHelpers { public static string GetLabelFromLine(this string line) { string label = line.GetMatch(@"^?:(\s)"); //??????????????? if (!label.IsNullOrEmpty()) return label; else return ""; } public static string StripLabelFromLine(this string line) { return ...//??????????????? } public static bool IsNullOrEmpty(this string line) { return String.IsNullOrEmpty(line); } } public static class RegexHelpers { public static string GetMatch(this string text, string regex) { Match match = Regex.Match(text, regex); if (match.Success) { string theMatch = match.Groups[0].Value; return theMatch; } else { return null; } } } }

  • How to know when a user has really released a key in Java?

    - by Luis Soeiro
(Edited for clarity) I want to detect when a user presses and releases a key in Java Swing, ignoring the keyboard auto repeat feature. I also would like a pure Java approach the works on Linux, Mac OS and Windows. Requirements: When the user presses some key I want to know what key is that; When the user releases some key, I want to know what key is that; I want to ignore the system auto repeat options: I want to receive just one keypress event for each key press and just one key release event for each key release; If possible, I would use items 1 to 3 to know if the user is holding more than one key at a time (i.e, she hits 'a' and without releasing it, she hits "Enter"). The problem I'm facing in Java is that under Linux, when the user holds some key, there are many keyPress and keyRelease events being fired (because of the keyboard repeat feature). I've tried some approaches with no success: Get the last time a key event occurred - in Linux, they seem to be zero for key repeat, however, in Mac OS they are not; Consider an event only if the current keyCode is different from the last one - this way the user can't hit twice the same key in a row; Here is the basic (non working) part of code: import java.awt.event.KeyListener; public class Example implements KeyListener { public void keyTyped(KeyEvent e) { } public void keyPressed(KeyEvent e) { System.out.println("KeyPressed: "+e.getKeyCode()+", ts="+e.getWhen()); } public void keyReleased(KeyEvent e) { System.out.println("KeyReleased: "+e.getKeyCode()+", ts="+e.getWhen()); } } When a user holds a key (i.e, 'p') the system shows: KeyPressed: 80, ts=1253637271673 KeyReleased: 80, ts=1253637271923 KeyPressed: 80, ts=1253637271923 KeyReleased: 80, ts=1253637271956 KeyPressed: 80, ts=1253637271956 KeyReleased: 80, ts=1253637271990 KeyPressed: 80, ts=1253637271990 KeyReleased: 80, ts=1253637272023 KeyPressed: 80, ts=1253637272023 ... At least under Linux, the JVM keeps resending all the key events when a key is being hold. To make things more difficult, on my system (Kubuntu 9.04 Core 2 Duo) the timestamps keep changing. The JVM sends a key new release and new key press with the same timestamp. This makes it hard to know when a key is really released. Any ideas? Thanks

  • Calling function dynamically by using Reflection

    - by Alaa'
Hi, I'm generating dll files contain code like the following example : // using System; using System.Collections; using System.Xml; using System.IO; using System.Windows.Forms; namespace CSharpScripter { public class TestClass : CSharpScripter.Command { private int i=1; private int j=2; public int k=3; public TestClass6() { } public void display (int i,int j,int k) { string a = null; a= k.ToString(); string a1 = null; a1= this.i.ToString(); string a2 = null; a2= j.ToString(); MessageBox.Show(" working! "+ "k="+ a +" i="+a1 + " j="+ a2); } public void setValues(int i,int j,int k1) { this.i=i; this.j=j; k=k1; } // I'm compiling the pervious code, then I execute an object from the dll file. So, in the second part of the code ( Executing part), I'm just calling the execute function, It contains a call for a function, I named here: display. For that I need to set values in the declaration by a setValue function. I want it to been called dynamically (setValues ), which has declaration like : public void(Parameter[] parameters) { //some code block here } For this situation I used Reflection. // Type objectType = testClass.GetType(); MethodInfo members = objectType.GetMethod("setValues"); ParameterInfo[] parameters = members.GetParameters(); For) int t = 0; t < parameters.Length; t++) { If (parameters[t]. ParameterType == typeof()) { object value = this.textBox2.Text; parameters.SetValue)Convert.ChangeType(value,parameters[t].ParameterType), t); } } // But it throws an casting error" Object cannot be stored in an array of this type." at last line, in first parameter for (setValue) methode. What is the problem here? And How I can call the method Dynamically after the previous code, by( Invoke) or is there a better way? Thanks.

  • SWIG & Java Use of carrays.i and array_functions for C Array of Strings

    - by c12
    I have the below configuration where I'm trying to create a test C function that returns a pointer to an Array of Strings and then wrap that using SWIG's carrays.i and array_functions so that I can access the Array elements in Java. Uncertainties: %array_functions(char, SWIGArrayUtility); - not sure if char is correct inline char *getCharArray() - not sure if C function signature is correct String result = getCharArray(); - String return seems odd, but that's what is generated by SWIG SWIG.i: %module Test %{ #include "test.h" %} %include <carrays.i> %array_functions(char, SWIGArrayUtility); %include "test.h" %pragma(java) modulecode=%{ public static char[] getCharArrayImpl() { final int num = numFoo(); char ret[] = new char[num]; String result = getCharArray(); for (int i = 0; i < num; ++i) { ret[i] = SWIGArrayUtility_getitem(result, i); } return ret; } %} Inline Header C Function: #ifndef TEST_H #define TEST_H inline static unsigned short numFoo() { return 3; } inline char *getCharArray(){ static char* foo[3]; foo[0]="ABC"; foo[1]="5CDE"; foo[2]="EEE6"; return foo; } #endif Java Main Tester: public class TestMain { public static void main(String[] args) { System.loadLibrary("TestJni"); char[] test = Test.getCharArrayImpl(); System.out.println("length=" + test.length); for(int i=0; i < test.length; i++){ System.out.println(test[i]); } } } Java Main Tester Output: length=3 ? ? , SWIG Generated Java APIs: public class Test { public static String new_SWIGArrayUtility(int nelements) { return TestJNI.new_SWIGArrayUtility(nelements); } public static void delete_SWIGArrayUtility(String ary) { TestJNI.delete_SWIGArrayUtility(ary); } public static char SWIGArrayUtility_getitem(String ary, int index) { return TestJNI.SWIGArrayUtility_getitem(ary, index); } public static void SWIGArrayUtility_setitem(String ary, int index, char value) { TestJNI.SWIGArrayUtility_setitem(ary, index, value); } public static int numFoo() { return TestJNI.numFoo(); } public static String getCharArray() { return TestJNI.getCharArray(); } public static char[] getCharArrayImpl() { final int num = numFoo(); char ret[] = new char[num]; String result = getCharArray(); System.out.println("result=" + result); for (int i = 0; i < num; ++i) { ret[i] = SWIGArrayUtility_getitem(result, i); System.out.println("ret[" + i + "]=" + ret[i]); } return ret; } }

  • How do I recover from an unchecked exception?

    - by erickson
Unchecked exceptions are alright if you want to handle every failure the same way, for example by logging it and skipping to the next request, displaying a message to the user and handling the next event, etc. If this is my use case, all I have to do is catch some general exception type at a high level in my system, and handle everything the same way. But I want to recover from specific problems, and I'm not sure the best way to approach it with unchecked exceptions. Here is a concrete example. Suppose I have a web application, built using Struts2 and Hibernate. If an exception bubbles up to my "action", I log it, and display a pretty apology to the user. But one of the functions of my web application is creating new user accounts, that require a unique user name. If a user picks a name that already exists, Hibernate throws an org.hibernate.exception.ConstraintViolationException (an unchecked exception) down in the guts of my system. I'd really like to recover from this particular problem by asking the user to choose another user name, rather than giving them the same "we logged your problem but for now you're hosed" message. Here are a few points to consider: There a lot of people creating accounts simultaneously. I don't want to lock the whole user table between a "SELECT" to see if the name exists and an "INSERT" if it doesn't. In the case of relational databases, there might be some tricks to work around this, but what I'm really interested in is the general case where pre-checking for an exception won't work because of a fundamental race condition. Same thing could apply to looking for a file on the file system, etc. Given my CTO's propensity for drive-by management induced by reading technology columns in "Inc.", I need a layer of indirection around the persistence mechanism so that I can throw out Hibernate and use Kodo, or whatever, without changing anything except the lowest layer of persistence code. As a matter of fact, there are several such layers of abstraction in my system. How can I prevent them from leaking in spite of unchecked exceptions? One of the declaimed weaknesses of checked exceptions is having to "handle" them in every call on the stack—either by declaring that a calling method throws them, or by catching them and handling them. Handling them often means wrapping them in another checked exception of a type appropriate to the level of abstraction. So, for example, in checked-exception land, a file-system–based implementation of my UserRegistry might catch IOException, while a database implementation would catch SQLException, but both would throw a UserNotFoundException that hides the underlying implementation. How do I take advantage of unchecked exceptions, sparing myself of the burden of this wrapping at each layer, without leaking implementation details?

  • WLI domain with 3 servers - issues on JPD process startup

    - by XpiritO
Hi there. I'm currently working on a clustered WLI environment which comprehends 3 servers: 1 admin server ("AdminServer") and 2 managed servers ("mn1" and "mn2") grouped as a cluster, as follows: Architecture diagram: http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/4112/clusterdiagram.jpg I've developed a JPD process to execute some scheduled tasks, invoked using a Message Broker. I've deployed this project into a single-server WLI domain (with AdminServer only) and it works as expected: the JPD process is invoked (I've configured a Timer Event Generator instance to start it up). Message broker: http://img532.imageshack.us/img532/1443/wlimessagebroker.jpg Timer event generator: http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/7358/wlitimereventgenerator.jpg In order to achieve fail-over and load-balancing capabilities, I'm currently trying to deploy this JPD process into this clustered WLI environment. Although, I'm having some issues with this, as I cannot get it to work properly, even if it still works. Here is a screenshot of the "WLI Process Instance Monitor" (with AdminServer and mn1 instances up and running): http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/8477/wliprocessinstancemonit.jpg According to this screen the process seems to be running, as it shows in this instance monitor screen. However, I don't see any output coming out neither at AdminServer console or mn1 console. In single-server domain it was visible output from JPD process "timeout" callback method, wich implementation is shown below: @com.bea.wli.control.broker.MessageBroker.StaticSubscription(xquery = "", filterValueMatch = "", channelName = "/SamplePrefix/Samples/SampleStringChannel", messageBody = "{x0}") public void subscription(java.lang.String x0) { String toReturn=""; try { Context myCtx = new InitialContext(); MBeanHome mbeanHome = (MBeanHome)myCtx.lookup("weblogic.management.home.localhome"); toReturn=mbeanHome.getMBeanServer().getServerName(); System.out.println("**** executed at **** " + System.currentTimeMillis() + " by: " + toReturn); } catch (Exception e) { System.out.println("Exception!"); e.printStackTrace(); } } (...) @org.apache.beehive.controls.api.events.EventHandler(field = "myT", eventSet = com.bea.control.WliTimerControl.Callback.class, eventName = "onTimeout") public void myT_onTimeout(long time, java.io.Serializable data) { // #START: CODE GENERATED - PROTECTED SECTION - you can safely add code above this comment in this method. #// // input transform System.out.println("**** published at **** " + System.currentTimeMillis()); publishControl.publish("aaaa"); // parameter assignment // #END : CODE GENERATED - PROTECTED SECTION - you can safely add code below this comment in this method. #// } and here is the output visible at "AdminServer" console in single-server domain testing: **** published at **** 1273238090713 **** executed at **** 1273238132123 by: AdminServer **** published at **** 1273238152462 **** executed at **** 1273238152562 by: AdminServer (...) What may be wrong with my clustered configuration? Am I missing something to accomplish clustered deployment? Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Reading POST data from html form sent to serversocket.

    - by user32167
i try to write simplest possible server app in Java, displaying html form with textarea input, which after submitting gives me possibility to parse xml typed in that textarea. For now i build simple serversocket based server like that: import java.io.BufferedReader; import java.io.InputStreamReader; import java.io.PrintWriter; import java.net.ServerSocket; import java.net.Socket; public class WebServer { protected void start() { ServerSocket s; String gets = ""; System.out.println("Start on port 80"); try { // create the main server socket s = new ServerSocket(80); } catch (Exception e) { System.out.println("Error: " + e); return; } System.out.println("Waiting for connection"); for (;;) { try { // wait for a connection Socket remote = s.accept(); // remote is now the connected socket System.out.println("Connection, sending data."); BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader( remote.getInputStream())); PrintWriter out = new PrintWriter(remote.getOutputStream()); String str = "."; while (!str.equals("")) { str = in.readLine(); if (str.contains("GET")){ gets = str; break; } } out.println("HTTP/1.0 200 OK"); out.println("Content-Type: text/html"); out.println(""); // Send the HTML page String method = "get"; out.print("<html><form method="+method+">"); out.print("<textarea name=we></textarea></br>"); out.print("<input type=text name=a><input type=submit></form></html>"); out.println(gets); out.flush(); remote.close(); } catch (Exception e) { System.out.println("Error: " + e); } } } public static void main(String args[]) { WebServer ws = new WebServer(); ws.start(); } } After form (textarea with xml and one additional text input) is submitted in 'gets' String-type variable I have Urlencoded values of my variables (also displayed on the screen, it looks like that: gets = GET /?we=%3Cnetwork+ip_addr%3D%2210.0.0.0%2F8%22+save_ip%3D%22true%22%3E%0D%0A%3Csubnet+interf_used%3D%22200%22+name%3D%22lan1%22+%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Csubnet+interf_used%3D%22254%22+name%3D%22lan2%22+%2F%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fnetwork%3E&a=fooBar HTTP/1.1 What can i do to change GET to POST method (if i simply change it in form and than put " if (str.contains("POST")){" it gives me string like gets = POST / HTTP/1.1 with no variables. And after that, how i can use xml from my textarea field (called 'we')?

  • Large File Download - Connection With Server Reset

    - by daveywc
I have an asp.net website that allows the user to download largish files - 30mb to about 60mb. Sometimes the download works fine but often it fails at some varying point before the download finishes with the message saying that the connection with the server was reset. • How can I implement a site with ASP.NET MVC without using Visual Studio?

    - by Cheeso
I have seen ASP.NET MVC Without Visual Studio, which asks, Is it possible to produce a website based on ASP.NET MVC, without using Visual Studio? And the accepted answer is, yes. Ok, next question: how? Here's an analogy. If I want to create an ASP.NET Webforms page, I load up my favorite text editor, create a file named Something.aspx. Then I insert into that file, some boilerplate: <%@ Page Language="C#" Debug="true" Trace="false" Src="Sourcefile.cs" Inherits="My.Namespace.ContentsPage" %> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en"> <head> <title>Title goes here </title> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css/style.css"></link> <style type="text/css"> #elementid { font-size: 9pt; color: Navy; ... more css ... } </style> <script type="text/javascript" language='javascript'> // insert javascript here. </script> </head> <body> <asp:Literal Id='Holder' runat='server'/> <br/> <div id='msgs'></div> </body> </html> Then I also create the Sourcefile.cs file: namespace My.Namespace { using System; using System.Web; using System.Xml; // etc... public class ContentsPage : System.Web.UI.Page { protected System.Web.UI.WebControls.Literal Holder; void Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e) { // page load logic here } } } And that is a working ASPNET page, created in a text editor. Drop it into an IIS virtual directory, and it's working. What do I have to do, to make a basic, hello, World ASPNET MVC app, in a text editor? • Reliable session faulting for unknown reason

    - by Scarfman007
I am trying to achieve the following - one client-side proxy instance (kept open) accessed by multiple threads using a reliable session. What I have managed so far is to have either A) a reliable session with a client-side proxy which is created and disposed per call or B) what I aim for, but without a reliable session. When I enable reliable sessions on my binding however, the following behaviour is exhibited: Client-side Upon application startup everything appears to work fine until roughly 18 messages in to the WCF session. I firstly get the proxy.InnerChannel.Faulted event raised, then an exception is caught at the point where I am calling the method on the proxy. The exception is a System.TimeoutException, with message: "The request channel timed out while waiting for a reply after 00:00:59.9062512. Increase the timeout value passed to the call to Request or increase the SendTimeout value on the Binding. The time allotted to this operation may have been a portion of a longer timeout." The inner exception has a similar message: "The request operation did not complete within the allotted timeout of 00:01:00. The time allotted to this operation may have been a portion of a longer timeout." With the method at the top of the inner stack trace being: System.ServiceModel.Channels.ReliableRequestSessionChannel.SyncRequest.WaitForReply(TimeSpan timeout) I then call proxy.Close followed by proxy.Abort (catching and ignoring exceptions). If I utilize the default settings (i.e. have simply <reliableSession/>), then calling proxy. Close results in another System.Timeout exception (although this time the allotted timeout is 00:00:00), however if I override the defaults as specified above no exception is thrown. Service-side Utilizing WCF tracing I get a System.ServiceModel.CommunicationException, with message: "The sequence has been terminated by the remote endpoint. The session has stopped waiting for a particular reply. Because of this the reliable session cannot continue. The reliable session was faulted." And a stack trace ending at: System.ServiceModel.AsyncResult.End[TAsyncResult](IAsyncResult result) When remotely attaching to the server I get the same message, which occurs when code execution steps over the return statement of my service in the service call which causes the error. The puzzling thing to me is that the service is stable and runs with options A) or B) as decribed at the beginning of my post, and occurs after a varying number of messages (around 18). The former fact points to there being nothing wrong with the code (indeed I have checked that no exceptions are thrown), and the latter just serves to confuse me and is why I modified the settings on the reliable session binding. I am quite stuck on this. Can anyone suggest why the reliable session would fault in such a way?

  • Why does C# exit when calling the Ada elaboration routine using debug?

    - by erict
I have a DLL created in Ada using GPS. I am dynamically loading it and calling it successfully both from Ada and from C++. But when I try to call it from C#, the program exits on the call to Elaboration init. What am I missing? The exact same DLL is perfectly happy getting called from C++ and Ada. Edit: If I start the program without Debugging, it also works with C#. But if I run it with the Debugger, then it exits on the call to ElaborationInit. There are no indications in any of the Windows event logs. If the Ada DLL is Pure, and I skip the elaboration init call, the actual function DLL is called correctly, so it has something to do with the elaboration. using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Runtime.InteropServices; namespace CallingDLLfromCS { class Program { [DllImport("kernel32.dll", CharSet = CharSet.Auto, SetLastError = true)] public static extern IntPtr LoadLibrary(string dllToLoad); [DllImport("kernel32.dll", CharSet = CharSet.Ansi, SetLastError = true)] public static extern IntPtr GetProcAddress(IntPtr hModule, string procedureName); [DllImport("kernel32.dll", CharSet = CharSet.Auto, SetLastError = true)] public static extern bool FreeLibrary(IntPtr hModule); [UnmanagedFunctionPointer(CallingConvention.StdCall)] delegate int AdaCallable2_dlgt(int val); static AdaCallable2_dlgt fnAdaCallable2 = null; [UnmanagedFunctionPointer(CallingConvention.StdCall)] delegate void ElaborationInit_dlgt(); static ElaborationInit_dlgt ElaborationInit = null; [UnmanagedFunctionPointer(CallingConvention.StdCall)] delegate void AdaFinal_dlgt(); static AdaFinal_dlgt AdaFinal = null; static void Main(string[] args) { int result; bool fail = false; // assume the best IntPtr pDll2 = LoadLibrary("libDllBuiltFromAda.dll"); if (pDll2 != IntPtr.Zero) { // Note the @4 is because 4 bytes are passed. I'm trying to make a class where I put a key and value into the put method which puts the key in the k string array and value into the v string array, however it is not being saved in the array when I do get or display. • How to get Firefox to not continue to show "Transferring data from..." in browser status bar after a

    - by Edward Tanguay
The following silverlight demo loads and displays a text file from a server. However, in Firefox (but not Explorer or Chrome) after you click the button and the text displays, the status bar continues to show "Transferring data from test.development..." which erroneously gives the user the belief that something is still loading. I've noticed that if you click on another Firefox tab and then back on the original one, the message goes away, so it seems to be just a Firefox bug that doesn't clear the status bar automatically. Is there a way to clear the status bar automatically in Firefox? or a way to explicitly tell it that the async loading is finished so it can clear the status bar itself? • ASP.NET Repeater and DataBinder.Eval

    - by Fernando
I've got a <asp:Repeater> in my webpage, which is bound to a programatically created dataset. The purpose of this repeater is to create an index from A-Z, which, when clicked, refreshes the information on the page. The repeater has a link button like so: <asp:LinkButton ID="indexLetter" Text='<%#DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem,"letter")%>' runat="server" CssClass='<%#DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem, "cssclass")%>' Enabled='<%#DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem,"enabled")%>'></asp:LinkButton> The dataset is created the following way: protected DataSet getIndex(String index) { DataSet ds = new DataSet(); ds.Tables.Add("index"); ds.Tables["index"].Columns.Add("letter"); ds.Tables["index"].Columns.Add("cssclass"); ds.Tables["index"].Columns.Add("enabled"); char alphaStart = Char.Parse("A"); char alphaEnd = Char.Parse("Z"); for (char i = alphaStart; i <= alphaEnd; i++) { String cssclass="", enabled="true"; if (index == i.ToString()) { cssclass = "selected"; enabled = "false"; } ds.Tables["index"].Rows.Add(new Object[3] {i.ToString(),cssclass,enabled }); } return ds; } However, when I run the page, a "Specified cast is not valid exception" is thrown in Text='<%#DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem,"letter")'. I have no idea why, I have tried manually casting to String with (String), I've tried a ToString() method, I've tried everything. Also, if in the debugger I add a watch for DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem,"letter"), the value it returns is "A", which according to me, should be fine for the Text Property. • Find a base case for a recursive void method

    - by Evan S
I am doing homework. I would like to build a base case for a recursion where ordering given numbers (list2) in ascending order. Purpose of writing this codes is that when all numbers are in ascending order then should stop calling a method called ascending(list2, list1); and all values in list2 should be shipped to list1. For instance, list2 = 6,5,4,3,2,1 then list2 becomes empty and list1 should be 1,2,3,4,5,6. I am trying to compare result with previous one and if matches then stop. But I can't find the base case to stop it. In addition, Both ascending() and fixedPoint() are void method. Anybody has idea? lol Took me 3 days... • Why is this simple Mobile Form not closed when using the player

Hi, I created this simple sample Form with the close button. Everything is working as expected when NOT using the Interop.WMPLib.dll I've seen other applications using this without problems but why isn't the Form process closed when I just add the line: SoundPlayer myPlayer = new SoundPlayer(); and of course dispose it: if (myPlayer != null) { myPlayer.Dispose(); myPlayer = null; } The Form closes but the debugger VS2008 is still active. The Form project and the dll are still active. If you send me an email to [email protected], I can send you the zipped project. • Helping linqtosql datacontext use implicit conversion between varchar column in the database and tab

    - by user213256
I am creating an mssql database table, "Orders", that will contain a varchar(50) field, "Value" containing a string that represents a slightly complex data type, "OrderValue". I am using a linqtosql datacontext class, which automatically types the "Value" column as a string. I gave the "OrderValue" class implicit conversion operators to and from a string, so I can easily use implicit conversion with the linqtosql classes like this: // get an order from the orders table MyDataContext db = new MyDataContext(); Order order = db.Orders(o => o.id == 1); // use implicit converstion to turn the string representation of the order // value into the complex data type. OrderValue value = order.Value; // adjust one of the fields in the complex data type value.Shipping += 10; // use implicit conversion to store the string representation of the complex // data type back in the linqtosql order object order.Value = value; // save changes db.SubmitChanges(); However, I would really like to be able to tell the linqtosql class to type this field as "OrderValue" rather than as "string". Then I would be able to avoid complex code and re-write the above as: // get an order from the orders table MyDataContext db = new MyDataContext(); Order order = db.Orders(o => o.id == 1); // The Value field is already typed as the "OrderValue" type rather than as string. // When a string value was read from the database table, it was implicity converted // to "OrderValue" type. order.Value.Shipping += 10; // save changes db.SubmitChanges(); In order to achieve this desired goal, I looked at the datacontext designer and selected the "Value" field of the "Order" table. Then, in properties, I changed "Type" to "global::MyApplication.OrderValue". The "Server Data Type" property was left as "VarChar(50) NOT NULL" The project built without errors. However, when reading from the database table, I was presented with the following error message: Could not convert from type 'System.String' to type 'MyApplication.OrderValue'. at System.Data.Linq.DBConvert.ChangeType(Object value, Type type) at Read_Order(ObjectMaterializer1 ) at System.Data.Linq.SqlClient.ObjectReaderCompiler.ObjectReader2.MoveNext() at System.Linq.Buffer1..ctor(IEnumerable1 source) at System.Linq.Enumerable.ToArray[TSource](IEnumerable`1 source) at Example.OrdersProvider.GetOrders() at ... etc From the stack trace, I believe this error is happening while reading the data from the table. When presented with converting a string to my custom data type, even though the implicit conversion operators are present, the DBConvert class gets confused and throws an error. Is there anything I can do to help it not get confused and do the implicit conversion? Thanks in advance, and apologies if I have posted in the wrong forum. cheers / Ben

This partitioner will enumerate over a IDataReader pulling chunkSize records at a time from the data-source. protected class DataSourcePartitioner<object[]> : System.Collections.Concurrent.Partitioner<object[]> { private readonly System.Data.IDataReader _Input; private readonly int _ChunkSize; public DataSourcePartitioner(System.Data.IDataReader input, int chunkSize = 10000) : base() { if (chunkSize < 1) throw new ArgumentOutOfRangeException("chunkSize"); _Input = input; _ChunkSize = chunkSize; } public override bool SupportsDynamicPartitions { get { return true; } } public override IList<IEnumerator<object[]>> GetPartitions(int partitionCount) { var dynamicPartitions = GetDynamicPartitions(); var partitions = new IEnumerator<object[]>[partitionCount]; for (int i = 0; i < partitionCount; i++) { partitions[i] = dynamicPartitions.GetEnumerator(); } return partitions; } public override IEnumerable<object[]> GetDynamicPartitions() { return new ListDynamicPartitions(_Input, _ChunkSize); } private class ListDynamicPartitions : IEnumerable<object[]> { private System.Data.IDataReader _Input; int _ChunkSize; private object _ChunkLock = new object(); public ListDynamicPartitions(System.Data.IDataReader input, int chunkSize) { _Input = input; _ChunkSize = chunkSize; } public IEnumerator<object[]> GetEnumerator() { while (true) { List<object[]> chunk = new List<object[]>(_ChunkSize); lock(_Input) { for (int i = 0; i < _ChunkSize; ++i) { if (!_Input.Read()) break; var values = new object[_Input.FieldCount]; _Input.GetValues(values); chunk.Add(values); } if (chunk.Count == 0) yield break; } var chunkEnumerator = chunk.GetEnumerator(); lock(_ChunkLock) //Will this cause a deadlock? { while (chunkEnumerator.MoveNext()) { yield return chunkEnumerator.Current; } } } } IEnumerator IEnumerable.GetEnumerator() { return ((IEnumerable<object[]>)this).GetEnumerator(); } } } I wanted IEnumerable object it passed back to be thread safe (the .Net example was so I am assuming PLINQ and TPL could need it) will the lock on _ChunkLock near the bottom help provide thread safety or will it cause a deadlock? From the documentation I could not tell if the lock would be released on the yeld return. Also if there is built in functionality to .net that will do what I am trying to do I would much rather use that. And if you find any other problems with the code I would appreciate it.
