  • What is the easiest/simplest way to change the HD on a Linux server?

    Hello. I have a machine running Ubuntu Server that has been presenting some HD-related problems. Instead of reinstalling and reconfiguring everything (and to save time) we'd like to copy everything from the current hard drive to a new one and start using it. We only have a single hard drive with a main partition and a swap partition. What tools or methods would you recommend for replacing a hard drive with minimum difficulty and chance of problems?     I have issues with slow internet and by changing mtu works fine for me. I use Ubuntu 9.10 64bit system. I have dynamic ip address setup All the time after system bootup, I need to do the following command to make mtu setting take effect. sudo ifconfig eth0 mtu 1492 Are there any way I can set it up using startup program. As you know, sudo prompt me root password.

  • XSLT Escape Character not working

    I am trying to use escape charaters in my text output, as i would like too surround the output in emailData tags. I am using <xsl:text>&#60;emailData&#62;</xsl:text> In the XSLT to esnure that this works however because i am using a tool called Cast Iron for some reason it is not converting the &#60; into < and just spits out &lt;emailData> You can see am image of it HERE that illustrates the output i am getting.   • Changed login for a user with encrypted home, now I can't login

    I changed a user's login by doing this: $ usermod old_login -l new_login I also wanted to move his home to reflect his new username, but it wouldn't let me, so I just rebooted. But now after I login, the screen blinks and I'm redirected back to the login screen. And that's what happens when you cannot access your home, that's why I think it has something to do with his home being encrypted. How do I fix this? I'm on a Ubuntu 12 Virtualbox VM.

When I try to open the file with pico or vim, the command thinks that the "-" sign is an option for the command. I tried enclosing the file name with quotes ('), but I still get the same error. I tried with bash and zsh, but still the same error.

    I am using a raid 5 system for my ubuntu 12.04 xmbc media server with 5 disks. Since the data isn't changing a lot and a total loss wouldn't be so bad, cause I have another backup anyway I am thinking about using SnapRAID It sais: SnapRAID is mainly targeted for a home media center, where you have a lot of big files that rarely change The main advantage for me would be power-saving, cause not all disks have to run all the time. Would you recomment using this? (with a regular resync script once a day)

    On my ubuntu 10.04 VPS, I get regular 500 error on nginx (0.7.??)+ fcgi web server running a durpal site. and when I trace the nginx error log I see plenty of these: socket() failed: No buffer space available) while connecting to upstream ..., I have tried differnt combination configs but none fixed the problem. Currently I have 3 nginx workers, Keep-alive time out 15 seconds and and PHP_FCGI_CHILDREN=5 PHP_FCGI_MAX_REQUESTS=1000 I really appreciate if you Can you suggest a solution to this annoying problem.

    I'm setting up a development machine which runs Ubuntu 12.04 and KVM for virtualization. I have a guest running Ubuntu 12.04 which can be accessed from the host via its IP address which is assigned by libvirt. The guest can also access the internet, no problem there. However, now I want to setup PPTP so I can connect to the host (from my workstation running Windows 7) and directly access guests without relying on SSH port forwarding. I can connect from my W7-machine to the host (PPTP), but I cannot access any virtual machines (which are accessable from the host directly).   • netstat -ntap doesn't show pid/process name for some connections?

    I have ubuntu/hardy server, with kernel 2.6.24-23-server and netstat: # netstat --version net-tools 1.60 netstat 1.42 (2001-04-15) The problem is that we have a lot of ESTABLISHED connections that don't show PID nor Program name in netstat -ntap output. Netstat was called from root, there are no chroots, grsecurity, nor anything like this (or so I was told :). Any idea on what might be wrong? UPDATE lsof -n -i works ok, and shows pid/process name for the connections.

    I'm running LAMP on Ubuntu 8.04. Apache's username and group are www-data. I put my connection details and AES key in a file in a directory that's not web served. I chown-ed the files to www-data:www-data and set the permissions to 700. Still, the script that require()s these files will only run if I chmod the files to 755. What am I missing?

  • Flash video has become jittery in Karmic

    When I first installed Karmic, I must have installed a Flash player or else it came with Karmic. It worked fine and I have been running the Ubuntu updates whenever requested by the OS. However, now my Flash video is extremely jittery and the whole computer kinds of slows down whenever I try to play a Flash video file. I have no idea what type of Flash player is running or what is the best one to use. Would appreciate any recommendations. Thanks.

  • NetworkManager applet looks like it can't see network

    My system is Ubuntu 9.04. There is NetworkManager applet, but it looks like there are no networks. When I click it, there is disabled menu "Wired Network/device not managed". I have working eth0 interface, internet is working fine and I can see eth0 in ifconfig When I right-click and choose "Edit connections", there is only "Auto vboxnet0" under "Wired" tab. No "eth0". It shouldn't be a problem, but I cannot connect to VPN because of this :(

  • Burn 24/96 flac files to play on standalone player

    I have vinyl record rip in 24/96 flac format. Each track is almost 200 MB big, so the album won't fit on CD. How to burn these files on a DVD to play with the same quality on standalone DVD player? My player supports SACD, DVD Audio and DVD video as well. My OS is Ubuntu Lucid (preferred), but I have also WinXp with Nero installed. BTW, is there any difference between DVD+ and DVD- for audio?
