• Mac host and Ubuntu guest on virtual box shared folder issue

  I have set up ubuntu server on virtual box on my mac. I created a shared folder which appears to be saved and visible in the configuration section on virtual box for the ubuntu server machine. My only issue is I don't know where this is or how to access it from inside ubuntu server. Does it get it's own directory or do I have to create some sort of a sym-link? If I do need to manually tell it to look in the mac for the file how do I reference the mac machine?

• Time jumping forward on NTP failure

  I have been having some weird problems with NTP for a while. If I use ntpdate to set the time then it sets fine. ntpd then invariably fails to find a server (I have loads configured) and decides to set the clock forward about 5 hours. It's a Xen server with dom0 set to a different timezone so I'm not sure if that is interfering with it. How can I make sure I ignore the dom0 time and have ntpd not change the time if it fails to reach a time server? EDIT: I now do not think it is ntpd giving me problems, I turned ntpd off and it jumped forward seemingly randomly.

  There is an AGPLv3 based software (Client) that makes web service calls (using SOAP) to another software (Server - commercial, cloud based). There is no common code or any connection whatsoever between these two except for the web service calls being made. My questions - Does the Server need to be AGPL too? I guess not - but would like to confirm. Let us say the end point URL for the Server can be configured on the Client side (by editing an XML file) to connect it to different Servers (again, there is no connection other than the webservice calls being made) does it require any of these Servers being AGPL? Are there any issues in running the Client as a DLL that is loaded by other commercial applications on users' desktops? Does it require these other applications also to be AGPL?   I want to implement a distributed data storage using a client/server architecture. Each data item will be stored persistently in disk in one of several remote servers. The client uses a library to update and query the data, shielding the client from its actual location. This should allow a client to associate keys (String) to values(byte[]), much as a Map does. The system must ensure that the amount of data stored in each server is approximately the same. The set of servers is known beforehand by other servers and clients. Both the client and the server will be written in Java, using sockets, threads, and files. I open this topic with the objective of discussing the best way to implement this idea, assuming simplicity, what are the issues of this implementation, performance measurements and discussion of the limitations.

• What norms/API for monitoring my servers?

  I have a dozen server applications installed on my customers intranets (they can send http requests over the internet but cannot be called from outside). They're written in various technologies, mainly java and Go. I want them to regularly push information about their state towards a central server which is visible on internet. Some of this information is generic (is it ON ?), some is specific (size of a cache in an application for example). The main goal is to be able to make a small web page on which I could instantly check the state of every servers. And maybe later add some kind of notification in case of problem. Obviously I can do this by writing a few dozen lines of code each side (or a little more if I put this data in a database) but in order to ease future evolution, it could be interesting to use some existing norms or libraries. So, what are the current opensource free and light solutions to do this, preferably with no central configuration when I add a server ? I'd prefer a norm over a library.

  This a followup to my previous question: How to implement physics and AoE spells in an MMO game?. There, we concluded that all physics have to be done on the server, and that I should use cylinders for calculations. Now, how can I check for collision detection on a ground-to-player basis on the server? It's fairly easy if the ground is a flat space, I just check if the player's z coordinate is lower than some value and voila, but, what if the map/ground itself is a model? How do I know where hills are on the server-side? How do I know when object collisions happen? I'm using node.js and socket.io.

  I have Ubuntu Server set up as my DCHP server. We have had it install for a few year and our dchp.lease file contain over 4000 entries. I am wanting to clean it up and basically start a new lease file to get current list (@1500 entries). I have read the walk through on how to make a new lease file and get it started, which leads me to this question. Will the dhcp server try to give each unit new IP address or will it build the new database with the IP addresses that the the units report to it?

I know this is trivially easy with the GUI, but there doesn't seem to be a simple way to do it from from the command line? • How should my local git workflow work?

  At home, I have a server that is running some software (on a LAMP stack, but only accessible internally). I have another machine and a laptop that I both use for developing said software. What is the best workflow for me? Should I have a repository on my local server, create a live branch, staging branch and development branch, then checkout the development branch from my laptop/development PC to work on, commit that back when I'm done, then merge the development branch with the staging branch for testing, before further merging to the live branch? Would I simply checkout the production branch to my /www/var/ on my server? Or am I thinking/going about this all wrong? Thanks.

  I created a puzzle game with Unity and uploaded it to one server. This works fine, but I bought a new server and uploaded my game to it as well. There, the loading time is much longer. These are the servers: http://pinheadsinteractive.com/Mozzie/ (fast) http://operation-mozzie-free.com/ (slow) The Unity files are exactly the same from one server to the next. My client is dissatisfied with the new, slow loading time. So, how can I reduce the time my Unity game takes to load? Even in some cases they faced the problem that they could not load the game at all. For the the moment, I'm using an iframe on the new sever as a workaround, but the issue still remains unsolved.

  I've been using PHP-5.4.3 for about a month now, and today, I decided to make a switch to PHP-5.5.5, I downloaded the source code, and placed it in C:/php (also renaming the folder php-5.5.5 to php) and I added server variables, as usual C:/php/ <-- but here I got stuck. Because, usually I appended the php.exe at the end, which was found inside the PHP folder so, I could be able to access PHP from the command line, or start the built-in server, but now, I can't find this file, and I can't find a way to start the server from the command line either. • SSH refusing connection after changing default port

  currently I'm handling 2 server (A and B). In server A I installed Ubuntu 12.10. I changed the SSH port into 1198 and it works fine. In server B it has been installed with Ubuntu 11.04. I tried to change the port number into 1198 as well but it refused the connection when I tried to connect again using Putty. I change the SSH configuration on /etc/ssh/sshd_config and I did restart the SSH using sudo service ssh restart. I was thinking its because of firewall allowed port but the firewall shows inactive when I run sudo ufw status. Any idea why this can happened?

My only experience with servers and hosting is uploading through FTP and playing around with CPanel/WHM a little. The role's I'm going for are web development PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS type roles, but in recent interviews I've been asked questions about setting up things on the server, that I had no idea what was being said... which wasn't ideal! Without knowing more than I do, it's hard to explain what exactly I'm looking to learn, but it's basically just the server elements I should know as a web developer? If you're a web developer, do you have any dealing with the server apart from uploading files, and if so, what? Are things like Subversion(SVN) and version control systems often set up by the web development team, could that be what they were talking about?

  I am trying to configure an Ubuntu 10.04 desktop edition as a server. I currently have the DHCP server working through eth0. My problem is that I only have one Ethernet port, and am receiving Internet though a mobile hotspot on my phone through wlan0, and whenever I attempt to connect through wlan0 and eth0 I am unable to access the Internet through the server or the clients. When I disconnect from eth0 I then regain access. I have searched extensively for a solution, and have come up short. Any help is appreciated.

• SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB &ndash; How to get started

  As many of you aware, SQL Server can be a bit of a pig when it comes to system resources on your development machine. As part of the 2012 products Microsoft has added SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB which is a happy medium for myself when thinking about having to install a full blown SQL Server on my box. This however does not work in all cases for all development but if you are doing web or local client development then it should suffice. On the other hand, if you are working with technologies like SharePoint or trying to run Team Foundation Server on your local box then you will be out of luck while using LocalDB. To start of with, the localDB setup is delivered and packaged with Visual Studio 2012 RC. If you want to get the stand-alone installer you can download it here in either the 32 or 64 bit flavors. Once you get it installed you can start using it right away in either Visual Studio 2010 or the new Visual Studio 2012 RC. To get started you can open the SQL Server object explorer in Visual Studio by clicking   the menu option View –> SQL Server Object Explorer. This will bring up to the navigation pane where you can add a SQL Server. Once you add the SQL Server you will be prompted with the “Connect to Server” dialog to enter the server for which you can use “(localdb)\v11.0”. Click connect and you should be connected to your localDB where you can create and manage databases from Visual Studio 2010, Visual Studio 2012 or SSMS. Once you have started creating databases here you can use the database projects in Visual Studio with these database as well as use the (localdb)\v11.0 server name inside your connections string information for your development environment. Hope this helps someone get started with SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB! It provides a great balance for developing against SQL Server 2012.
