    I downloaded, burned to disc, and booted Ubuntu 12.04 Precise (I defected to Arch for a year when I got fed up of Natty). I was pleasantly surprised by both of my monitors working perfectly on there (needed to rearrange as my secondary monitor is to the left, however). So I installed. There's no recognition of the second monitor now, and it doesn't appear in the settings. I've also enabled the Nvidia driver. What do I do?

  • Why do I have to manually 'Restart Management Network' on vSphere 5 host after reboot to get networking available?

    I've got a couple of vSphere 5.0 hosts in a small lab environment here and I've noticed a strange behaviour. When on of the hosts gets rebooted, it is unresponsive to the network until I log into the ESX console, Press F2 to customize and select Restart management network. Once this is done, the networking works perfectly as expected. Each host has two NICs which are trunked together using Etherchannel to a Cisco 3750. The link is also a .1q VLAN trunk and the management network is configured on VLAN121 with the VM traffic configured on VLAN118. Why would the host be completely dead to the world until I physically kick it?     I am considering buying "Ubuntu Desktop Support" from Canonical for 2 reasons: I have a couple of issues that I would like professional help with. ( Specifically a recurring kernel panic, and a slow wireless connection. ) I would like to lend a helping hand toward supporting Ubuntu financially. However, I am a bit worried that once I transfer the money, they will end up just referring me to the bug tracker on Launchpad. Also, free support options like this site have the pleasant property that they are open to the internet, meaning that if my issue gets fixed, it is more likely to help others with the same problem.     Is there still demand for developers who crate software without GUI's in the industry? Are jobs still in demand? I only ask because I write a lot of software for myself in C. I mainly use FreeBSD without a GUI. My software is for data mining, automation and marketing purposes most of the time as this is the field I work in. I find that a GUI is not needed and I feel comfortable working within a console. I've never worked for a company as a programmer, but in the industry do you have dedicated programmers who work exclusively on the GUI's and other who write the logic?

Now I've already installed it technically but the branding is completely off. It's using its codename.     Our company Coscend has built a Web portal-based communications and cloud collaboration platform by using JavaScript (JS), which is embedded in HTML5 and formatted with CSS3. Other technologies used in the core code include Flash, Flex, PostgreSQL and MySQL. Our team would like to host this platform on five different Windows and Linux environments that run different types of Web servers such as IIS and Apache. Technical challenge: Each of these Windows and Linux servers have a different host name and domain name (and IP address), but we would like to keep our enterprise platform independent of host server configuration. Possible approach to solution: We think an API (interface module with a GUI) is needed to accomplish this level of modularity and flexibility while deploying at our enterprise customers. Seeking your insights: In this context, our team would appreciate your guidance on: Is there an algorithmic method to implement this Web portal-based platform in these Windows and Linux environments while separating it from server configuration, i.e., customizing the host name, domain name and IP address for each individual instance? For example, would it be suitable to create some JS variables / objects for host name and domain name and call them in the different implementations? If a reference to the host/domain names occurs on hundreds of portal modules, these variables or JS objects would replace that. If so, what is the best way to make these object modules written in JS portable and re-usable across different environments and instances for enterprise customers? Here is an example of the implemented code for the said platform. The following Web site (www.CoscendCommunications.com) was built using this enterprise collaboration platform and has the base code examples of the platform. This Web site is domain-specific.     I'm a new comp sci grad applying to jobs, and this requirement confuses me, especially since the job description (Python back-end developer) says it's the single most important thing ("Everything else we can teach you!") I mean, I know how to use the command line... I know your standard run-of-the-mill stuff like navigating around and manipulating files and permissions and using pipes and running applications, but what are they looking for when they say something like that? I'm aware there's no end to what you can do with the command line, but I was under the impression that after a certain point it's the sort of thing that only benefits server/system administrators.

    Bonjour, Je lance ce débat pour parler d'ActivePerl. En fait, il y a quelques années, il n' y avait que la version 5.8 (pour ne pas parler de la 5.6) qui évoluée régulièrement. Pendant ce temps, le développement de la 5.10 suivait son cours. Puis, nous nous sommes retrouvés avec 2 versions en évolutions. Il a fallu quelques mois pour espérer avoir nos sympathiques modules Perl du CPAN compatibles sur les deux versions. Maintenant la politique d'ActivePerl est de proposer une version stable chaque année. C'est intéressant car Perl est très maintenu et évolue bien, mais sincèrement, on se retrouve avec x versions de Perl et on s'y perd. Actuellement, il y a 4 versions d'ActivePerl 5.8, 5.10, 5.12 et 5.14, et je ne parle pas de Perl6, Parro...

    So I was writing a simple 2D game with OpenGL and SDL and had this problem when there was awful tearing when running in windowed mode (even though I explicitly asked SDL_SetVideoMode to use double buffering). Didn't worry about it all too much because most of the time the game grabs the entire screen, windowed mode is just for debugging. Anyway, yesterday I updated my nVidia drivers and tearing disappeared, the game runs smooth and looks nice in windowed mode too. I can see how the problem may be in the graphics driver, but this leads to a question. Obviously, professional game developers have to deal with a lot of different hardware/software configurations. What are the techniques they use to make sure the game looks the roughly the same on different graphics cards or even the same model of graphics card, but with different driver versions?

I'm developing a software for 1 year and few months, it's for the food industry, more exactly a software to: Delivery, Take Way, Table Reservation, POS, Accounts Payable and Receivable, Prints(receipt), Kitchen Monitors Orders, Customers Orders Control and Fiscal Area. Well, I had separated the software mainly in two areas, one is web area and the other is desktop area (Used by Admins only) and local installed. 1 - Web Area (Basically do the follow:) Show Catalog with the products Customers Make Orders Customers Pay for the Orders etc ... as mentioned above 2 - Desktop Area Manage Orders Manage Customers Manage Suppliers Manage Accounts Payable and Receivable etc ... as mentioned above The web area is hosted in an online web server (scripts and database are online). The Desktop area is hosted locally in a Linux machine with a local database and local scripts files. My question is: Is it possible to keep only one Database for both applications? If YES, please what is the best approach? Follow my technical specification environment Database: Actually I have two databases working and I would love to keep only one. Operating System: Linux (Kernel 2.6.X and above) or Windows (XP and above) For the Web Area Apache, PHP, Python, Java Script, Shell Script and MySQL. For the Desktop Area: PHP-GTK2, Apache, PHP, MySQL and Shell Script.
