  • Is Java a good choice for small to medium size websites? [closed]

    Why do I ask? I want to use one language not two. Yes I know with Java and .NET I can program anything, but, as a website it should have a good design, I don't want to build ugly sites. Which is why for smaller sites I use PHP, I can get the e-comm I want and also a nice UI pretty easily, unlike in ASP.NET. But would I run into this design rstriction with Java (I've never used it). Plus, Java would also give me exposure to Android development. So..then I could ditch PHP? I guess I am looking for the 'one ring to rule them all', and not 2 or 3 (languages). Thanks in advance,

    I took a Game Design class a while ago that used Multimedia Fusion 2. Now I would like to get it on my computer, but I don't have the disk anymore. I have access to the program on my Dad's computer, but I want to get it on mine. Is there a way to get MMF2 for free on my computer? If not, are there any other free game design programs like MMF2 (knowing code is not necessary)? Edit: If I paid the $50 to upgrade to 2.5, could I put it on a second computer, or is that not possible?

  • Using PDO for Data Management

    This question is more a design oriented question than a code specific question. I am new to PHP and I am planning to use PDO as a data access layer. Say for instance I have a class called CITY. Now if I need to create an instance of this class, what is the best technique. Should have a singleton DB access class which is used to write and read data from the db layer. OR should I delegate it to the individual class object. For example if I invoke city.save() (city is a class), then the city class will handle the saving of that city object's data into the database. Excuse my ignorance but i have a java background and therefore trying to understand what is the best design principle for data management when using php.

  • Why Does DreamWeaver CS5 Discriminate between File Extensions, Even After Modding Mime Types!?

    Hi folks, Even After I forced DreamWeaver CS5 to allow opening of .ast extensions as a MIME type of php5, which DreamWeaver now opens and colors correctly as described here, I still have trouble figuring out why it still discriminates between the two file extensions! Symptoms: External Files & Design View I have a file foo.php which php includes other files (e.g. the php-combined css.php and js.php). Now, when opening foo.php all functions work perfectly: the external (included) php files are all recognised correctly. However, when I change foo.php foo.ast, and open it again, It does not recognise the files extensions anymore in the top bar. Also, I lose the Design / Live View functionality.** When I change foo.ast to foo.php, all works again! Anyone any clues of why there remains a a difference between one and other extension?   • Standards for documenting/designing infrastructure

    We have a moderately complex solution for which we need to construct a production environment. There are around a dozen components (and here I'm using a definition of "component" which means "can fail independently of other components" - e.g. an Apache server, a Weblogic web app, an ftp server, an ejabberd server, etc). There are a number of weblogic web apps - and one thing we need to decide is how many weblogic containers to run these web apps in. The system needs to be highly available, and communications in and out of the system are typically secured by SSL Our datacentre team will handle things like VLAN design, racking, server specification and build. So the kinds of decisions we still need to make are: How to map components to physical servers (and weblogic containers) Identify all communication paths, ensure all are either resilient or there's an "upstream" comms path that is resilient, and failover of that depends on all single-points of failure "downstream". Decide where to terminate SSL (on load balancers, or on Apache servers, for instance). My question isn't really about how to make the decisions, but whether there are any standards for documenting (especially in diagrams) the design questions and the design decisions. It seems odd, for instance, that Visio doesn't have a template for something like this - it has templates for more physical layout, and for more logical /software architecture diagrams. So right now I'm using a basic Visio diagram to represent each component, the commms between them with plans to augment this with hostnames, ports, whether each comms link is resilient etc, etc. This all feels like something that must been done many times before. Are there standards for documenting this?

  • Excel controls not visible for certain users

    One of the users of an Excel program I've written is having a weird problem. None of the control objects (Command Button, ComboBox, etc.) are visible to him when he opens the file on his laptop. He is using Excel 2003, the same version I used to create the program, and enables macros using the pop-up when the file loads. I have Googled this, and have found these people who seem to be having the exact same problem, with various versions of Excel. Unfortunately, none of their questions were answered. I can't really explain it any better than this user: If I enter design mode and pull a control from the control toolbar onto a sheet all I see are the drag handles. When not in design mode I have to feel around with the mouse and can click the button which executes the button click code correctly and opens another sheet where again I have to feel around for the buttons to return me to the original sheet. The button I managed to click is now visible but as soon as I click anywhere on the sheet it disappears. I have verified that the visible property of the buttons is set and that the Show All Objects on the Options View tab is selected. If I pull buttons from the Forms toolbar onto a sheet they are visible. If I try to find Objects using F5 when not in design mode Excel reports no objects on the sheet. So, Super Users, can you help? UPDATE: Thanks for your replies, but much like the person in the ozgrid link, the problem has gone away. Not sure why it went, but I can confirm that the user rebooted again and also started up other Excel files that didn't contain controls in the interim. Perhaps that fixed it, or maybe it'll be back again. I'll keep udating with progress, and close if the problem doesn't reoccur for the next few days. Thanks again.

    Hi! I see there are a lot of questions about this, but nothing helped me to get this work. I have a nib with a NSTableView with three columns (with the right identifiers set) and a class named ShortcutsTableController. In the nib I have a NSObject with class value ShortcutsTableController. I also connected the NSTableView to my controller as I usually do.   • Django Error: NameError name 'current_datetime' is not defined

    I'm working through the book "The Definitive Guide to Django" and am stuck on a piece of code. This is the code in my settings.py: ROOT_URLCONF = 'mysite.urls' I have the following code in my urls.py from django.conf.urls.defaults import * from mysite.views import hello, my_homepage_view urlpatterns = patterns('', ('^hello/$', hello), ) urlpatterns = patterns('', ('^time/$', current_datetime), ) And the following is the code in my views.py file: from django.http import HttpResponse import datetime def hello(request): return HttpResponse("Hello World") def current_datetime(request): now = datetime.datetime.now() html = "<html><body>It is now %s.</body></html>" % now return HttpResponse(html) Yet, I get the following error when I test the code in the development server. NameError at /time/ name 'current_datetime' is not defined Can someone help me out here? This really is just a copy-paste from the book. I don't see any mistyping.

  • MikTeX 2.8 doesn't add hyphenation support for pdfLaTeX

    I'm using MikTeX 2.8 edition, and installed the hungarian language support and hyphenation files. Using the standard LaTeX command they work fine, but when I try to use pdfLaTeX, they don't get loaded and I get the (C:\stuff\miktex\tex\generic\babel\magyar.ldf (C:\stuff\miktex\tex\generic\babel\babel.def) Package babel /b/c12/cWarning:/b/c0/c No hyphenation patterns were loaded for (babel) the language `Magyar' (babel) I will use the patterns loaded for \language=0 instead. message. Using latex it works fine: (C:\stuff\miktex\tex\latex\00miktex\bblopts.cfg) (C:\stuff\miktex\tex\generic\babel\magyar.ldf (C:\stuff\miktex\tex\generic\babel\babel.def))) I tried updating the FNDB and the Formats, but to no avail.   • Core Data Migration - "Can't add source store" error

    Hi, In my iPhone app I'm using Core Data and I've made changes to my data model that cannot be automatically migrated over (i.e. added new relationships). I added the data model version (Design - Data Model - Add Model Version) and applied my new data model changes to the new version 2. I then created a mapping object model and set the Source and Destination models to their correct data models (old and new respectively). When I run the app and call the persistentStoreCoordinator, my app barfs with the following: 2010-02-27 02:40:30.922 XXXX[73578:20b] Unresolved error Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=134110 UserInfo=0xfc2240 "Operation could not be completed. (Cocoa error 134110.)", { NSUnderlyingError = Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=134130 UserInfo=0xfbb3a0 "Operation could not be completed. (Cocoa error 134130.)"; reason = "Can't add source store"; } FWIW (not much i think) I've also made the usual code changes in persistentStoreCoordinator to use the NSMigratePersistentStoresAutomaticallyOption and NSInferMappingModelAutomaticallyOption (for future data model changes that can be automatically migrated). More relevantly, my managedObjectModel is created by calling initWithContentsOfURL where the file/resource type is "momd". I've tried updating both the source and destination model in the mapping model (Design - Mapping Model - Update XXX Model) as well as deleted the mapping model and recreated it. I've cleaned and re-built but all to no avail. I still get the above error message. Any pointers/thoughts on how I can further debug or resolve this problem please? I haven't posted any code snippets because this feels much more like a build environment issue (and my code is very standard - just the usual core data code to handle migrations using a mapping model but I'm happy to show the code if it helps).     Hi, How to implement a website with a recommendation system similar to stackoverflow/digg/reddit? I.e., users submit content and the website needs to calculate some sort of "hotness" according to how popular the item is. The flow is as follows: Users submit content Other users view and vote on the content (assume 90% of the users only views content and 10% actively votes up or down on content) New content is continuously submitted How do I implement an algorithm that calculates the "hotness" of a submitted item, preferably in real-time? Are there any best-practices or design patterns? I would assume that the algorithm takes the following into consideration: When an item was submitted When each vote was cast When the item was viewed E.g. an item that gets a constant trickle of votes would stay somewhat "hot" constantly while an item that receives a burst of votes when it is first submitted will jump to the top of the "hotness"-list but then fall down as the votes stop coming in. (I am using a MySQL+PHP but I am interested in general design patterns).

    I'm using SharpZipLib to create a zip file with an html page and images. If the html file has a / in the name, it creates a folder (which messes up the image paths). Example: If the html file should be named Web/Design.html the zip file will contain a Web folder with a Design.html file in it. I've tried escaping / by replacing / with // or \/ but nothing has worked so far.
