  Can someone please help as i've spent all day trying to fix this. I installed the latest XAMPP and now i can't connect to mysql from terminal.I checked my .profile file and the PATH seems ok. Does anyone know whats happened and what's the solution? PATH=$PATH:/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/bin export PATH THIS IS A PROGRAMMING QUESTION AS I'M A PHP DEVELOPER TRYING TO DO MY JOB! • Fix ACPI DSDT of Amilo Pa 1538

  I have a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pa 1538 laptops and installed Ubuntu 10.04 on it (Kernel 2.6.32). Main problem is that the fans of the notebook are always on even when the temperature is low. Another problem is that the display brightness can not be adjusted. Since some years I use Dell laptops and never experienced any ACPI problems so I thought that it is no longer needed to fix ACPI tables but now I have this crap of a laptop and I think I have to do it. Unfortunately I need some help repairing the DSDT. • Why does Mac OS X Software Update not work when machine uses Active Directory?

  My company's IT department is mostly a Windows run operation and in order to become more secure, they are altering the way that the Macintosh computers login to our internal network so that they use Active Directory like their Windows counterparts. I have been given Administrative permission on my Mac and I am able to do most of what I used to be able to do in terms of authentication of software installations. However, there is a problem: the "Software Update" feature doesn't work. What happens is that when I try to get the Mac to perform its Software Updates from the Apple menu, the normal window appears listing what has to be updated; I am able to select what to update and click the "Update" button, but then nothing happens. It doesn't ask for authentication like it used to, the computer doesn't perform any download or installation (it does sometimes ask me to agree to license agreements for iTunes). I can download the updates individually and install them without any issues, but the auto-update fails. I'd rather use the Software Update menu item like I used to: it is much more convenient. Any suggestions on how I can fix this? EDIT Nov 19th, 2009, 10:09 EST: I have posted this question to the Apple Mac OS X Snow Leopard support forum. EDIT Nov 19th, 2009, 12:39 EST:Yes, the Terminal command "sudo softwareupdate --install --all" does work flawlessly. I want to avoid that as my co-workers are generally not comfortable on the Mac. I also tried Chealion's suggestion to delete "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist" and "/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist", Software Update still fails. However, I did get diagnostic messages in the Console (below). I've deleted the MS Office Package Receipts and examined the suhelperd (Software Update Helper Daemon?); it appears that suhelperd is crashing and that explains why it doesn't work. I've submitted a bug report to Apple (radar://7408619). • KVM recommendations

  I recently tried out a cheaper KVM solution, a dual monitor one with a USB hub and audio/mic support. It seemed the perfect KVM. However, these are my experiences. When using my keyboard via the PS/2 connection, none of my multimedia keys work (useful, because it has a volume control and my speakers do not, only on a wireless remote control.) I plugged the keyboard in via the USB port - and it seemed to work. However, I believe to switch the hub from PC to Mac, you need to use a keyboard combo, which is only supported when the keyboard is plugged in via PS/2 Sometimes the middle mouse button doesn't work when connected via PS/2. The multi monitor is VGA - I just found out by the looks of things my Mac Mini outputs DVI Digital only (though this is my fault!). Mac works with 2 screens, but switching and switching back can cause it not to display on the 2nd screen unless I go detect displays again. My question is - is there a KVM out there that supports these features? USB keyboard and mouse inputs will full multimedia keys support Dual monitor DVI connections Hotkey to change PCs and physical button USB hub Emulate screens attached when switching to a different computer Works with PC and Mac Audio / Microphone support Does one exist, that won't cost the world? So far the only one that seems to support all this (that I can tell) is this one. UPDATE I ended up buying the Aten CS1642. It's expensive, but it seems to work great!

• Fedora 10 setting up HPLIP for HP Deskjet F4488

  I had set up a newly purchased HP F4488 using HPLIP, I installed it on my Fedora 10 desktop and it worked fine for the past 2 days. Suddenly, it is failing to print. The scanner works and the photocopier works. When a print job is initialized there is an error and the printer gets disabled. What is the problem? Is there anything that I should fix additionally to make it work?

• Cisco 891w multiple VLAN configuration

  I'm having trouble getting my guest network up. I have VLAN 1 that contains all our network resources (servers, desktops, printers, etc). I have the wireless configured to use VLAN1 but authenticate with wpa2 enterprise. The guest network I just wanted to be open or configured with a simple WPA2 personal password on it's own VLAN2. I've looked at tons of documentation and it should be working but I can't even authenticate on the guest network! I've posted this on cisco's support forum a week ago but no one has really responded. I could really use some help. So if anyone could take a look at the configurations I posted and steer me in the right direction I would be extremely grateful. • How to setup Hadoop cluster so that it accepts mapreduce jobs from remote computers?

  There is a computer I use for Hadoop map/reduce testing. This computer runs 4 Linux virtual machines (using Oracle virtual box). Each of them has Cloudera with Hadoop (distribution c3u4) installed and serves as a node of Hadoop cluster. One of those 4 nodes is master node running namenode and jobtracker, others are slave nodes. Normally I use this cluster from local network for testing. However when I try to access it from another network I cannot send any jobs to it. The computer running Hadoop cluster has public IP and can be reached over internet for another services. For example I am able to get HDFS (namenode) administration site and map/reduce (jobtracker) administration site (on ports 50070 and 50030 respectively) from remote network. Also it is possible to use Hue. Ports 8020 and 8021 are both allowed. What is blocking my map/reduce job submits from reaching the cluster? Is there some setting that I must change first in order to be able to submit map/reduce jobs remotely? This is quite annoying, especially with headphones on, as I hear sound in one ear, and no sound in the other. So, I want to be able to easily force dual mono (Left+Left or Right+Right) when I find that kind of video, and switch to normal stereo after I finish watching it. I have my headphones plugged well / I don't create audio/video - I want it for real-time playback only, In Windows audio config, setting balance 100% to Left / Right doesn't help (I have either still only left when moved to left, and no sound at all when moved to right), I've checked all the configurations in Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio > Sound Playback > Advanced like suggested in this post, in conjunction with moving balance left/right, and it doesn't seem to have any impact on actual sound I hear in headphones, No need to mix L with R, I just want L+L or R+R, I prefer software solutions to buying a stereo-to-mono adapter, Free solutions please, no $$$ ones, neither trials etc., In Control Panel > Realtek HD Sound Effect Manager I can turn on various mumbo-jumbo effects like: Concert Hall / Hangar / Bathroom / whatever environment (and in fact it makes the sound appear in two ears, but well, it's ridiculous to do this;), but there is no Dual Mono option.   I'm looking for a best possible caching/expires configuration for my specific situation. I realize that some sites have advocated turning etags off: Header unset ETag, FileETag None I know that I should use either Expires or Cache-Control. In additions, I know that I should use either Last-modified or ETAGs (Per ySlow docs). I inherited a clients server that uses the following in .htaccess: <FilesMatch "\.(ico|pdf|flv|jpg|jpeg|png|gif|js|css|swf|xml|txt|html|htm)$"> Header set Cache-Control "max-age=172800, public, must-revalidate" </FilesMatch> With this server I am not going to be able to rely on staff to rename images, css and js in web applications so I do not want to set the expires far in the future without knowing (with a good certainty) that "most/all" browsers will check to see if content has changed. What I do not want to happen is someone call me and say the website is broken because they replaced an image and it's not showing up. But I do want to take the most advantage I can with caching and expires while still maintaining that mostly all browsers will check with the server to see if components have changed. I have access to both the .htaccess and apache .conf file and it is a single server, the content is not deployed on multiple servers.   I am having a problem with my AWS deployment, fairly new to AWS and Puppet. So coming to my question - can you distinguish puppet nodes with AWS machine tags or CNAME domains? A little background about the plan: have multiple clusters of machines, one php cluster, one legacy php cluster, one java cluster, one perl cluster control configuration with puppet - still pretty new to puppet but as a developer I like the idea of being able to version control configuration of servers have autoscaling enabled on those clusters - obviously the main benefit of the cloud that makes the much hight cost when it comes to any reasonable performance worth it (those amazon machines are slower than my phone...) deployment controlled by Capistrano, this makes things a lot easier So in AWS you get those super nasty public/private machine dns's... no way you can identify machines on those. In order to easer the problem, seams like AWS want's you to tag everything - so I did. Found a script that makes a CNAME record for each machine with the tag "ShortName" thanks to the Route53 API. Every machine has a ShortName tag that becomes its CNAME, unfortunately puppet still resolves the private dns name. I'd like to have node 'perl-cluster'{} in puppet, anyone any clue ho to achieve this? Thanks

• Low CPU performance with low usage and clock - Windows 8.1

  I recently deleted everything from my PC and reinstalled Windows 8.1 from scratch. When I first booted into Windows everything was extremely slow though the CPU usage was very low (about 1%). After installing some drivers the problem seemed to be solved, I was able to use my PC normally. Today I installed a game and I noticed a strange behavior: the game was playable but the performance worsened more and more in the time. This is the situation BEFORE opening the game (normal): This is AFTER some minutes inside the game (low CPU usage and clock): Some information about my system: PC: Sony Vaio S13 (SVS13A1C5E) OS: Windows 8.1 CPU: Intel Core i7-3520M 2.90GHz GPU(1): Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU(2): NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M LE I tried searching for new drivers and other solutions but noting worked and I don't know what is the cause. I did not checked the temperatures but the fans are not running fast and the PC does not look overheated. Update: Max CPU Temp: 66°C, Max GPU Temp: 61°C The strange thing is that the GPU load is 99% (GPU-Z) and the fan is almost silent. Update 2: I had troubles with Sony Vaio software, I can't get the FN keys and the STAMINA/SPEED switch to work (it is a physical switch to enable/disable the Nvidia card and change the Power Profile). I'm saying this because I remember that before reinstalling Windows there was an option in the Vaio Control Center (now it is not there anymore) that allowed me to choose from something like "priority to performance (ventilation)" or "priority to silence". The current behavior looks like a "priority to silence", but I can't get the stamina-speed switch to work and so I don't see similar oprions in the Vaio Control Center. I don't know if the problem is related to this.

• Backing up my data causes my server to crash using Symantec Backup Exec 12, or How I Came to Loathe

  I have a Dell PowerEdge 2850 running Windows Server 2003. It is the primary file server for one of my clients. I have another server also running Windows Server 2003 that acts as the core media server for Symantec Backup Exec 12. I recently upgraded from Backup Exec 11d to 12. This upgrade was necessary because we also just upgraded from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007. After the upgrade I had to push-install the new version 12 Backup Exec Remote Agents to each of the servers I am backing up (about 6 total). 5 of my servers are doing just fine, faithfully completing backups every night. My file server routinely crashes. Observations: When the server crashes, it does not blue screen, it just locks up completely. Even the mouse is unresponsive. If you leave the server locked up long enough, it will eventually reboot itself and hang on the Windows splash screen. There is absolutely zero useful Event Viewer evidence of a problem. The logs go from routine logging to an Unexplained Shutdown Event the next morning when I have to hard reset the server to get it to boot. 90% of the time the server does not boot cleanly, it hangs on the Windows splash screen. I don't have any light to shed here. When the server hangs all I can do is hard reset it and try again. Even after a successful boot and chkdsk /r operation, if you reboot the machine, you have a 90% chance it won't back up again cleanly. The back story: This server started crashing during nightly backups about a month ago. I tried everything I could think of to troubleshoot the problem and eventually had to give up because I could not keep coming to the office at 4 AM to try to get the server back online. One Friday I got lucky and the server stayed up for its entire full backup. I took this opportunity to restore the full backup to a temporary server I set up and switched all my users to the temporary. Then I reloaded the ailing file server. I kept all my users on the temporary file server for about 3 weeks. I installed the same Backup Exec Remote Agent and Trend Micro A/V client on the temporary server that I was using on the regular file server. During this time, I had absolutely no problems backing up the temporary server. I tested the reloaded file server extensively. I rebooted the server once an hour every day for 3 weeks trying to make it fail. It never did. I felt confident that the reload was the answer to my problems. I moved all of the data from the temporary server back to the regular server. I got 3 nightly backups out of it before it locked up again and started the familiar failure to boot cleanly behavior. This weekend I decided to monitor the file server through the entire backup job. I RDPd into the file server and also into the server running Backup Exec. On the file server I opened the Task Manager so I could view the processes and watch CPU and memory usage. Everything was running smoothly for about 60GB worth of backup. Then I noticed that the byte count of the backup job in Backup Exec had stopped progressing. I looked back over at my RDP session into the file server, and I was getting real time updates about CPU and memory usage still - both nearly 0%, which is unusual. Backups usually hover around 40% usage for the duration of the backup job. Let me reiterate this point: The screen was refreshing and I was getting real time Task Manager updates - until I clicked on the Start menu. The screen went black and the server locked up. In truth, I think the server had already locked up, the video card just hadn't figured it out yet. I went back into my bag of trick: driving to the office and hard reseting the server over and over again when it hangs up at the Windows splash screen. I did this for 2 hours without getting a successful boot. I started panicking because I did not have a decent backup to use to get everything back onto the working temporary file server. Once I exhausted everything I knew to do, I took a deep breath, booted to the Windows Server 2003 CD and performed a repair installation of Windows. The server came back up fine, with all of my data intact. I can now reboot the server at will and it will come back up cleanly. The problem is that I'm afraid as soon as I try to back that data up again I will back at square one. So let me sum things up: Here is what I've done so far to troubleshoot this server: Deleted and recreated the RAID 5 sets. Initialized the drives. Reloaded the server with a fresh Server 2003 install. Confirmed with Dell that I have installed the latest, Dell approved BIOS and NIC drivers. Uninstalled / reinstalled the Backup Exec Remote Agent. Uninstalled the Trend Micro A/V client. Configured the server not to reboot itself after a blue screen so I can see any stop error. I used to think the server was blue screening, but since I enabled this setting I now know that the server just completely locks up. Run chkdsk /r from the Windows Recovery Console. Several errors were found and corrected, but did not help my problem. Help confirm or deny the following assumptions: There are two problems at work here. Why the server is locking up in the first place, and why the server won't boot cleanly after a lockup. This is ultimately a software problem. The server works fine and can be rebooted cleanly all day long - until the first lockup - following a fresh OS load or even a Repair installation. This is not a problem with Backup Exec in general. All of my other servers back up just fine. For the record, all of the other servers run Server 2003, and some of them house more data than the file server in question here. Any help is appreciated. The irony is almost too much to bear. Backing up my data is what is jeopardizing it.
