• How to export SSIS to Microsoft Excel without additional software?

  This question is long winded because I have been updating the question over a very long time trying to get SSIS to properly export Excel data. I managed to solve this issue, although not correctly. Aside from someone providing a correct answer, the solution listed in this question is not terrible. The only answer I found was to create a single row named range wide enough for my columns. In the named range put sample data and hide it. SSIS appends the data and reads metadata from the single row (that is close enough for it to drop stuff in it). The data takes the format of the hidden single row. This allows headers, etc. WOW what a pain in the butt. It will take over 450 days of exports to recover the time lost. However, I still love SSIS and will continue to use it because it is still way better than Filemaker LOL. My next attempt will be doing the same thing in the report server. Original question notes: If you are in Sql Server Integrations Services designer and want to export data to an Excel file starting on something other than the first line, lets say the forth line, how do you specify this? I tried going in to the Excel Destination of the Data Flow, changed the AccessMode to OpenRowSet from Variable, then set the variable to "YPlatters$A4:I20000" This fails saying it cannot find the sheet. The sheet is called YPlatters. I thought you could specify (Sheet$)(Starting Cell):(Ending Cell)? Update Apparently in Excel you can select a set of cells and name them with the name box. This allows you to select the name instead of the sheet without the $ dollar sign. Oddly enough, whatever the range you specify, it appends the data to the next row after the range. Oddly, as you add data, it increases the named selection's row count. Another odd thing is the data takes the format of the last line of the range specified. My header rows are bold. If I specify a range that ends with the header row, the data appends to the row below, and makes all the entries bold. if you specify one row lower, it puts a blank line between the header row and the data, but the data is not bold. Another update No matter what I try, SSIS samples the "first row" of the file and sets the metadata according to what it finds. However, if you have sample data that has a value of zero but is formatted as the first row, it treats that column as text and inserts numeric values with a single quote in front ('123.34). I also tried headers that do not reflect the data types of the columns. I tried changing the metadata of the Excel destination, but it always changes it back when I run the project, then fails saying it will truncate data. If I tell it to ignore errors, it imports everything except that column. Several days of several hours a piece later... Another update I tried every combination. A mostly working example is to create the named range starting with the column headers. Format your column headers as you want the data to look as the data takes on this format. In my example, these exist from A4 to E4, which is my defined range. SSIS appends to the row after the defined range, so defining A4 to E68 appends the rows starting at A69. You define the Connection as having the first row contains the field names. It takes on the metadata of the header row, oddly, not the second row, and it guesses at the data type, not the formatted data type of the column, i.e., headers are text, so all my metadata is text. If your headers are bold, so is all of your data. I even tried making a sample data row without success... I don't think anyone actually uses Excel with the default MS SSIS export. If you could define the "insert range" (A5 to E5) with no header row and format those columns (currency, not bold, etc.) without it skipping a row in Excel, this would be very helpful. From what I gather, noone uses SSIS to export Excel without a third party connection manager. Any ideas on how to set this up properly so that data is formatted correctly, i.e., the metadata read from Excel is proper to the real data, and formatting inherits from the first row of data, not the headers in Excel? One last update (July 17, 2009) I got this to work very well. One thing I added to Excel was the IMEX=1 in the Excel connection string: "Excel 8.0;HDR=Yes;IMEX=1". This forces Excel (I think) to look at all rows to see what kind of data is in it. Generally, this does not drop information, say for instance if you have a zip code then about 9 rows down you have a zip+4, Excel without this blanks that field entirely without error. With IMEX=1, it recognizes that Zip is actually a character field instead of numeric. And of course, one more update (August 27, 2009) The IMEX=1 will succeed importing data with missing contents in the first 8 rows, but it will fail exporting data where no data exists. So, have it on your import connection string, but not your export Excel connection string. I have to say, after so much fiddling, it works pretty well.

  I am trying to parse a RSS2.0 feed, obtained from a remote server, on my Android device using XML Pull Parser. // get a parser instance and set input,encoding XmlPullParser parser = Xml.newPullParser(); parser.setInput(getInputStream(), null); I am getting invalid token exceptions: Error parsing document. (position:line -1, column -1) caused by: org.apache.harmony.xml.ExpatParser$ParseException: At line 158, column 25: not well-formed (invalid token) Strangely, when I download the feed XML on the device, bundle it inside the raw folder and then run the same code. Everything works fine. What could be the problem here? How do I validate the XML before I parse it on device? Thanks.

• Winforms TabControl causing spurious Paint events for UserControl

  For our project, we've written a WinForms UserControl for graphing. We're seeing some strange behavior when our control is sited in a TabControl - our control continuously fires Paint events, even when there is absolutely no activity by the user. We only see this in the TabControl. When we site our control in other containers such as Forms or Splitters, Paint is only fired when you'd expect e.g. when the control is first displayed, etc. Can anyone suggest why this might be happening? • Fail to launch application (CreateProcess error=87), can't use shorten classpath workaround

  When I launch our application in Eclipse on Windows I receive the following error: Exception occured executing command line. Cannot run program .. : CreateProcess error=87, The parameter is incorrect I've solved this in the past by shortening the CLASSPATH. I've now come to a point where I can no longer shorten the CLASSPATH, and would like to know if there are any other workarounds. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830473 seems to indicate that the max command prompt line length in windows xp is 8191 characters, and the only solution is to shorten folder names, reduce depth of folder trees, using parameter files, etc.

• C#: Multiline TextBox with TextBox.WordWrap Displaying Long Base64 String

  Hi, Happy New Year! I have a textbox to display a very long Base64 string. The TextBox.Multline = true and TextBox.WordWrap = true. The issue is caused by the auto-word-boundary detection of the TextBox itself. The Base64 string has '+' as one of the 64 characters for Base64 encoding. Therefore, the TextBox will wrap it up at the '+' character, which is not what I want (because the use might think there is a newline character around the '+' character). I just want my Base64 string displayed in Mulitline-mode in TextBox, but no word boundary detection, that is, if the TextBox.Width can only contain 80 characters, then each line should have exact 80 characters except the last line. I'm not sure if I made myself clear. Thanks. Peter

  Hi all, I'm working on a web application and using the jQuery plug-in Colorbox to pop up a window that presents a form for editing elements of the parent window. I'm using Firebug to debug my Javascript and jQuery, and I noticed that I can't select an element in my Colorbox HTML form using the jQuery console command line. For instance: $date = $("#date"); returns nothing when run from the jQuery console command line, even though I have an input element with id="date" and the Firebug "element inspect" pointer can find the element in the iFrame. Is there a way to get Firebug's console to access the elements in an iFrame? Thanks for your help! Doug

  I inherited a web application that makes calls to a web service. It is being developed in VS2008 SP1 and deployed to IIS6 (2k3 Server R2). Since I upgraded to Windows 7 Enterprise RTM, the following line gets added to my Web.config: <extendedProtectionPolicy policyEnforcement="Never" /> The problem is that when I deploy this application to my web server I get the following error: The element 'transport' cannot contain child element 'extendedProtectionPolicy' because the parent element's content model is empty I can remove the line and it will work, but its a pain and I forget sometimes to remove it again (VS2008 adds seems to add it back whenever I load the solution!!). • Integrating POP3 client functionality into a C# application?

  I have a web application that requires a server based component to periodically access POP3 email boxes and retrieve emails. The service then needs to process the emails which will involve: Validating the email against some business rules (does it contain a valid reference in the subject line, which user sent the mail, etc.) Analysing and saving any attachments to disk Take the email body and attachment details and create a new item in the database Or update an existing item where the reference matches the incoming email subject line What is the best way to approach this? I really don't want to have to write a POP3 client from scratch, but I need to be able to customize the processing of emails. Ideally I would be able to plug in some component that does the access and retrieval for me, returning arrays of attachments, body text, subject line, etc. ready for my processing... [ UPDATE: Reviews ] OK, so I have spent a fair amount of time looking into (mainly free) .NET POP3 libraries so I thought I'd provide a short review of some of those mentioned below and a few others: Pop3.net - free - works OK, very basic in terms of functionality provided. This is pretty much just the POP3 commands and some base64 encoding, but it's very straight forward - probably a good introduction Pop3 Wizard - commercial / some open source code - couldn't get this to build, missing DLLs, I wouldn't bother with this C#Mail - free - works well, comes with Mime parser and SMTP client, however the comments are in Japanese (not a big deal) and it didn't work with SSL 'out of the box' - I had to change the SslStream constructor after which it worked no problem OpenPOP - free - hasn't been updated for about 5 years so it's current state is .NET 1.0, doesn't support SSL but that was no problem to resolve - I just replaced the existing stream with an SslStream and it worked. Comes with Mime parser. Of the free libraries, I'd go for C#Mail or OpenPOP. I looked at a few commercial libraries: Chillkat, Rebex, RemObjects, JMail.net. Based on features, price and impression of the company I would probably go for Rebex and may in the future if my requirements change or I run into production issues with either of C#Mail or OpenPOP.   Hi there, can anyone help? I am having a problem stepping into code which is a website hosted on IIS7. Thinking it was just a glitch, I tried to restart. Upon restart, the BIOS took forever to get through (I didn't notice my disappeared hard drive in the listed drives) and the computer seemed stuck at the "Starting Windows" screen. I hard shut down everything. Opened up the case, used canned air to clear the dust out and made sure all devices were snugly in place. I hooked everything up and powered on. This time, after a few seconds the computer restarted (nothing showed up on screen either). After its restart, the computer didn't do anything. The hard drive indicator light was on the whole time. What happened? :( PC Specs: Windows 7, 3GB RAM, Core 2 Duo, 3 Hard drives

• jquery ui autocomplete not working in ie8 (until page refresh)

  Hello all, I am using jquery ui autocomplete it is working absolutely fine in all browsers except ie8. I have been doing some testing and there seems to be a strange bug. When I click on a link leading to the relevant page there is the following error generated by ie8 when I start typing in the autocomplete box: 'object doesn't support this property or method' this error points to my development jquery(1.4.2) file at line 4955, char 5 which is the following line: return new window.XMLHttpRequest(); However, if I simply reload the page the autocomplete works. I have added a random bit of data to be called with the autocomplete as I read that ie8 caches it ajax get requests but this does not seem to have solved the problem. Could there be a problem with the timing of the loading of all the relevant files including jquery? If so, how would I fix this? Any other clever ideas?! Andy

• Active Directory - Lightweight Directory Services and Domain Password Policy

  Greetings all, We have an active directory domain which enforces a strict password policy. Hooray! Now, for the project we are working on, we are going to be storing users of our website Microsoft's AD-LDS service as well as using that for authentication of our web users. By default, it is my understanding that AD-LDS inherits its password policy from the domain of the machine it's installed on. Is there any way to break that link such that we can define a lighter password policy (or none if we so choose) for users in AD-LDS without affecting our domain? Note: AD-LDS is going to be hosted on a machine which is part of the domain. Thanks in advance.

So for a few pages that number remains the same and then when the chapter changes the number on the header needs to increment. I have fiddled with headers in Word 2007 and can't make it work. Then I tried to break the document into sections and now I am stuck with trying to figure out how to link and unlink sections. Is there a quick and easy to achieve this? One of the requirements for this assignment is that I need to deliver a single document.

Sometime when the DoSomething() is called the InjectedBar property is null. In a single-threaded application, everything runs fine. How can this be occuring and how can I prevent it?

• C# powershell output reader iterator getting modified when pipeline closed and disposed.

  Hello, I'm calling a powershell script from C#. The script is pretty small and is "gps;$host.SetShouldExit(9)", which list process, and then send back an exit code to be captured by the PSHost object. The problem I have is when the pipeline has been stopped and disposed, the output reader PSHost collection still seems to be written to, and is filling up. So when I try and copy it to my own output object, it craps out with a OutOfMemoryException when I try to iterate over it. Sometimes it will except with a Collection was modified message. • jQuery Block UI: node is undefined

  I'm close to finishing an app that uses quite a bit of JS. Recently Firebug started throwing an error that says "node is undefined", referring to data.parent = node.parentNode; on line 209 of jQuery blockUI plugin Version 2.31 (06-JAN-2010) @requires jQuery v1.2.3 or later. I'm using jQuery 1.4.2 When I remove the code from my page that triggers the Block UI action, the error is still there. So it does not seem to be an issue in my code but an "error" in the file itself, or perhaps some kind of conflict with another file? For info my code is below. My IDE is highlighting some syntax errors in here but it does that even when there are none. Perhaps I'm missing it? $.blockUI({ css: { border: 'none', padding: '25px', backgroundColor: '#fff', '-webkit-border-radius': '10px', '-moz-border-radius': '10px', opacity: 1, color: '#000' , cursor: 'auto' }, message: $('#block_ui_msg'), }); EDIT: I just replaced the block UI file with the latest version 2.33 (29-MAR-2010), error still occurs but this time on line 210.

• How to Integrate ILMerge into C#/VB.NET (MSBuild) Projects to Merge Assemblies?

  I want to merge one .NET DLL assembly and one C# Class Library project referenced by a VB.NET Console Application project into one command-line console executable. I can do this with ILMerge from the command-line, but I want to integrate this merging of reference assemblies and projects into the Visual Studio project. From my reading, I understand that I can do this through a MSBuild Task or a Target and just add it to a C#/VB.NET Project file, but I can find no specific example since MSBuild is large topic. How do I integrate ILMerge into a Visual Studio (C#/VB.NET) project, which are just MSBuild projects, to merge all referenced assemblies (copy-local=true) into one assembly? How does this tie into a possible ILMerge.Targets file?
