• jpegexiforient does not seem to work in 12.04

  In Ubuntu 12.04, the jpegexiforient command doesn't seem to work. I've got a .jpg file for which exif clearly shows (correct) EXIF orientation information, but running jpegexiforient on the file returns nothing. I don't particularly care about that command, but it makes exifautotran not work. I could (and might) rewrite that script to use exif instead, but I'm just wondering if there's something dumb I'm just doing wrong. I found this somewhat old bug report but its suggestion of running exif to update the setting didn't make any difference. Does jpegexiforient work for anybody?

• Unity3D problem. Bullets fall down instead of flying like they should

• google webmaster showing 6 pages submitted 0 indexed, yet i can see them all there when i search in google?

  I have a small 'brochure' type site with 6 pages, i can see them all the pages showing up in google when i search for my site. But in webmaster tools under the sitemaps section it says 6 submitted, (the blue bar of the graph), but the indexed pages - the red bar is showing 0 indexed pages, even though they seem to be indexed ? any idea why this is ? I dont really think its that important as the pages are still indexed, but it just seems odd. =================================================== UPDATE 9/3/12 having just looked in google webmaster its showing that there are 11 pages indexed, under the health index status tab.. but under the optimization sitemap tab it shows 6 urls submitted but only 1 indexed ? please see images bellow index status: Sitemap status:

• How can I store all my level data in a single file instead of spread out over many files?

  I am currently generating my level data, and saving to disk to ensure that any modifications done to the level are saved. I am storing "chunks" of 2048x2048 pixels into a file. Whenever the player moves over a section that doesn't have a file associated with the position, a new file is created. This works great, and is very fast. My issue, is that as you are playing the file count gets larger and larger. I'm wondering what are techniques that can be used to alleviate the file count, without taking a performance hit. I am interested in how you would store/seek/update this data in a single file instead of multiple files efficiently.

• Website signaled as containing malware

  I've got a nasty problem with one of our websites. It has been signaled to us by Google and other agencies that it contains malware. We weren't able to understand how to cope with the problem. Could anyone drive us in the right direction? UPDATE: I used google webmaster tools to review the suspicious website. And now it says it's ok! Even if I didn't change anything! How could it be? false alarm?

• Skype does not save configuration

  Hello, on ubuntu 10.10, I have recently started to experience this problem: for some reason skype wont save any settings except "sign in on startup" when skype starts and tries to sign in it is unsuccessful (it shows incorrect password, in red) every time. no matter if I have provided good password the last time. I always have to click to show contacts in groups, it does not remember it. Every time I have to go to options and update some notification settings. I know all these things should be "remembered" by skype - this problem started only recently. I don't recall fiddling with any permissions that could have likely caused that. Do you know what the problem might be? I tried uninstall (marking complete configuration removal) and install fresh, but it still remembers my username (why??) Can I find skype configuration files on the filesystem somewhere and change permissions for them - or even better - edit the files to set what I want..?

• Proper response for a REST insert - full new record, or just the record id value?

  I'm building a REST API which allows inserts (POST, not idempotent) and updates (PUT, idempotent) requests to add/update database to our application. I'm wondering if there are any standards or best practices regarding what data we send back to the client in the response for a POST (insert) operation. We need to send back at least a record ID value (e.g. your new record is record #1234). Should we respond with the full object? (e.g. essentially the same response they'd get back from a "GET /object_type/1234" request) Should we respond with only the new ID value? (e.g. "{ id: 1234 }", which means that if they want to fetch the whole record they need to do an additional HTTP GET request to grab the full record) A redirect header pointing them to the URL for the full object? Something else entirely?

• How to get rid of 'grub rescue'?

  While logged into Windows, I deleted a disk partition which was containing Ubuntu. When I restarted my pc, it is showing 'grub rescue' command prompt. How to boot windows now? I no longer require Ubuntu. • Do you count a Masters in CS as a negative? [closed]

  In my experience interviewing developers I feel like candidates who've achieved a Masters in Comp Sci tend to be worse programmers on average that those who don't have a Masters. Is that just me, or have others noticed this phenomenon? If so, why would that be the case? UPDATE I appreciate the thoughtful comments. I think I should have been clearer in the comparison I'm making. Given two candidates who graduated from college around the same time, someone who went on to gain a Masters seems on average to be a worse programmer than someone who spent all their time in industry.

• Is it a good practice to use branches to maintain different editions of the same software?

  We have a product that has a few different editions. The differences are minor: different strings here and there, very little additional logic in one, very little difference in logic in the other. When the software is being developed, most changes need to be added to each edition; however, there are a few that don't and a few that needs to differ. Is it a valid use of branches if I have release-editionA and release-editionB (..etc) branches? Are there any gotchas? Good practices? Update: Thanks for the insight everyone, lots of good answers here. The general consensus seems to be that it is a bad idea to use branches for this purpose. For anyone wondering, my final solution to the problem is to externalize strings as configuration, and externalize the differing logic as plugins or scripts.

This can then be used by other Java EE components as well, such as Managed Beans. The plan is to add an annotation and standardized values in the javax.transaction package. • the window of calender is out of the screen

  hi, I've been using a external 21.5' monitor for my laptop of 12.1' monitor, and moved my top panel to the right and add a new panel to the bottom edge of the screen. A screenshot of the right part of my desktop is here: http://i.imgur.com/kOHwT.png As you see, The window of the calender is out of the screen. The alt+left mouse button did not work. How do you move the calender window? update: I managed to come up with a solution to get the window or panel of cal in the screen. Just remove the panel of clock and re-add it. But unfortunately, the preferences are lost. You have to reset the preferences, such as locations... but after re-adding 2 locations, the window of cal panel was just shown as the same of the previous screenshot before.

• New Look for Geekswithblogs.net Homepage

  I wanted to alert everyone to the new look of the Geekswithblogs.net Community Page.  I removed the tabs, cleaned up the posts and fonts, replaced the logo with our brighter logo, and mucked with the CSS and HTML to drive a smaller footprint.  With this update, the homepage is now HALF THE SIZE in KBs!  I still have some more AJAX calls I want to implement to make the footprint even smaller. Let me know what you think.  I feel it is easier to read through the posts now.

• Cannot use apt-get anymore because of one specific package

  No matter what type of apt-get I run (install, update, ...) I always get: dpkg: warning: files list file for package `libgdata-google1.2-1' missing, assuming package has no files currently installed. dpkg: warning: files list file for package `libntlm0' missing, assuming package has no files currently installed. (Reading database ... 354644 files and directories currently installed.) Preparing to replace libntlm0 1.1-1 (using .../libntlm0_1.1-1_i386.deb) ... Unpacking replacement libntlm0 ... At this point apt-get hang. Does somebody know a way to fix this? Some days ago a line in source.list was removed (Google Chrome).

  I am trying to update target m/c grub.cfg file for KGDB setup but while booting the m/c it got hung completely and not asking/waiting for remote gdb connection. • Database Change Auditing - Part of or Abstracted from ORM / Application Layer?

  My fellow developers and I are at a crossroads in how to go about continuing our auditing of database changes. Most of our applications log changes via INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE triggers. A few of our newer applications audit at the ORM layer; specifically using Hibernate Envers. While ORM layer auditing provides a much cleaner interface and is much more maintainable, it will not capture any manual database changes that are made. ORM layer auditing also means that our libraries will currently require a dependency on our ORM implementation unless, specifically in our case for example, JPA plans on providing something in the near future. Is there a common paradigm that addresses this?

• Windows Phone 8 Announcement

  As if the Surface announcement on Monday wasn’t exciting enough, today Microsoft announce that Windows Phone 8 will be coming this fall.  That itself is great news, but the features coming were like confetti flying in all different directions.  Given this speed I couldn’t capture every feature they covered.  A summary of what I did capture is listed below starting with their eight main features. Common Core The first thing that they covered is that Windows Phone 8 will share a core OS with Windows 8.  It will also run natively on multiple cores.  They mentioned that they have run it on up to 64 cores to this point.  The phones as you might expect will at least start as dual core.  If you remember there were metrics saying that Windows Phone 7 performed operations faster on a single core than other platforms did with dual cores.  The metrics they showed here indicate that Windows Phone 8 runs faster on comparable dual core hardware than other platforms. New Screen Resolutions Screen resolution has never been an issue for me, but it has been a criticism of Windows Phone 7 in the media.  Windows Phone 8 will supports three screen resolutions: WVGA 800 x 480, WXGA 1280 x 768, and 720 1280x720.  Hopefully this makes pixel counters a little happier. MicroSD Support This was one of my pet peeves when I got my Samsung Focus. With Windows Phone 8 the operating system will support adding MicroSD cards after initial setup.  Of course this is dependent on the hardware company on implementing it, but I think we have seen that even feature phone manufacturers have not had a problem supporting this in the past. NFC NFC has been an anticipated feature for some time.  What Microsoft showed today included the fact that they didn’t just want it to be for the phone.  There is cross platform NFC functionality between Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8.  The demos , while possibly a bit fanciful, showed would could be achieved even in a retail environment.  We are getting closer and closer to a Minority Report world with these technologies. Wallet Windows Phone 8 isn’t the first platform to have a wallet concept.  What they have done to differentiate themselves is to make it sot that it is not dependent on a SIM type chip like other platforms.  They have also expanded the concept beyond just banks to other types of credits such as airline miles. Nokia Mapping People have been envious of the Lumia phones having the Nokia mapping software.  Now all Windows Phone 8 devices will use NavTeq data and will have the capability to run in an offline fashion.  This is a major step forward from the Bing “touch for the next turn” maps. IT Administration The lack of features for enterprise administration and deployment was a complaint even before the Windows Phone 7 was released.  With the Windows Phone 8 release such features as Bitlocker and Secure boot will be baked into the OS. We will also have the ability to privately sign and distribute applications. Changing Start Screen Joe Belfiore made a big deal about this aspect of the new release.  Users will have more color themes available to them and the live tiles will be highly customizable. You will have the ability to resize and organize the tiles in a more dynamic way.  This allows for less important tiles or ones with less information to be made smaller.  And There Is More So what other tidbits came out of the presentation?  Later this summer the API for WP8 will be available.  There will be developer events coming to a city near you.  Another announcement of interest to developers is the ability to write applications at a native code level.  This is a boon for game developers and those who need highly efficient applications. As a topper on the cake there was mention of in app payment. On the consumer side we also found out that all updates will be available over the air.  Along with this came the fact that Microsoft will support all devices with updates for at least 18 month and you will be able to subscribe for early updates.  Update coming for Windows Phone 7.5 customers to WP7.8.  The main enhancement will be the new live tile features.  The big bonus is that the update will bypass the carriers.  I would assume though that you will be brought up to date with all previous patches that your carrier may not have released. • Can not enter password for sudo [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: add repository to ubuntu from terminal with pgp key 3 answers I have used Ubuntu for several years, and I can not enter password for sudo, and this is when i wanna add a key to public.gpg for itunes10 it dos not work, and the password normal works wite sudo but not in the terminal when i enter: sudo wget -q "http:// deb.playonlinux.com/public.gpg" -o- | sudo apt-get add - and it says this 'sorry try again', and i just had installed itunes10, and have to add a key whit wget to public.gpg, and i tried to enter in the terminal: sudo apt-get update and the password works fine but not whit using sudo wget, and can some one please help.

• Black screen after login, after Kubuntu upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10

  After upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10 I have troubles with Xorg - all boot process goes fine, but I have a black screen when Xorg starts (KDE starts, and I can hear AC adapter (dis)connect sounds). Trouble is in Xorg only, framebuffer console (ctrl-alt-f2) works fine, backlight turns on when I switch to console and turns off again after I switch back to X. All worked fine before release upgrade. I'm running AMD64 version of Kubuntu 13.10 on Samsung RV508 (Intel i915 graphic, no EFI) notebook. Xorg 1.14.3, kernel 3.11.0-12 UPDATE: I have tried to boot using old kernel (3.8.0-13) and now it's working fine with that kernel.

• How can I resize an external USB NTFS partition?

  I have a new USB drive which came with a single NTFS partition. How can I shrink that so that I can create an ext4 partition? gparted does not seem to have the "Resize" option highlighted. Update: After following the directions below, after unmounting I am still not able to resize the partition. There is a warning though: "Unable to find mount point. Unable to read the contents of this file system! Because of this, some operations may be unavailable. The following list of software packages is required for ntfs file system support: ntfsprogs". However, with the partition mounted, I can read & write to the file system on the drive just fine, and ntfsprogs is installed and current. What's next?

• I can't click on some things and other problems

  I have some issues with my Ubuntu 12.04 . When I open Ubuntu Software Center, the program opens and than just disappears just when it is opened. My Ubuntu 12.04 won't install any updates because of this error in the picture. Worst of all: I can't click on anything except for programs that from Ubuntu: for example I can't browse the internet via Firefox or Chromium... I can't click on folders. I can't click on things in my Thunderbird mail program. But I can click on Update manager for example... It is just clicking that doesn't work, when I try 'clicking' something with using the tab-button and enter I can click on something - in every case. But that's just too annoying to do. Oh sorry guys I had some screenshots that illustrate the problems, but I can't get them off the 'problem pc ubuntu 12.04' about which I am talking... it's so sad

• Dual monitor gnome-shell broke itself

  Ok, lets get this over with. I have a dual-monitor, ati setup on gnome-shell that was just fine until this morning. Then, this happened. Look closer... Whatever has happened to my ubuntu setup? My second monitor still works, entirely normally, with the exception that I cannot (obviously) access activities (as i am in gnome-fallback ). I do wish to resume my work... EDIT: By entirely normally, I mean I can move my mouse over it and have seperate windows on it and stuff. It's not mirroring. UPDATE: Unity works entirely normally.
