• TypeError: Error #1009 - (Null reference error) With Flash.

  I am not an expert in flash, but i do work with AS and tweak Flash projects , though not having deep expertise in it. Currently i need to revamp a flash website done by one another guy, and the code base given to me, upon execution is throwing the following error. "--- TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference. at NewSite_fla::MainTimeline/__setProp_ContactOutP1_ContactOut_Contents_0() at NewSite_fla::MainTimeline/frame1() --" The structure of the project is like, it has the different sections split into different movie clips. There is no single main timeline, but click actions on different areas of seperate movie clips will take them between one another. All the AS logic of event handling are written inline in FLA , no seperate Document class exists. Preloader Movie clip is the first one getting loaded. As i understood the error is getting thrown initially itself, and it is not happening due to any Action script logic written inline, because it is throwing error even before hitting the first inline AS code. I am not able to figure Out what exactly it causing the problem, or where to resolve it.   Hi, I have a simple code fragment in JS working with prototype inheritance. function object(o) { function F() {} F.prototype = o; return new F(); } //the following code block has a alternate version var mammal = { color: "brown", getColor: function() { return this.color; } } var myCat = object(mammal); myCat.meow = function(){return "meow";} that worked fine but adding this: mammal.prototype.kindOf = "predator"; does not. ("mammal.prototype is undefined") Since I guessed that object maybe have no prototype I rewrote it, replacing the var mammal={... block with: function mammal() { this.color = "brown"; this.getColor = function() { return this.color; } } which gave me a bunch of other errors: "Function.prototype.toString called on incompatible object" and if I try to call _myCat.getColor() "myCat.getColor is not a function" Now I am totally confused. After reading Crockford, and Flanagan I did not get the solution for the errors. So it would be great if somebody knows... - why is the prototype undefined in the first example (which is foremost concern; I thought the prototype of explicitly set in the object() function) - why get I these strange errors trying to use the mammal function as prototype object in the object() function? What it lacks is some try-out code examples. Some good examples are provided by Morris John's Article. I personally find the explanations are not that easy as in the first link, but still very good. The most difficult part even after I actually got it is really not to confuse the .prototype propery with the internal [[Prototype]] of an object.

• What framework would allow for the largest coverage of freelance developers in the media/digital mar

  This question is not about which is the best, it is about which makes the most business sense to use as a company's platform of choice for ongoing freelance development. I'm currently trying to decide what framework to move my company in regarding frameworks for web application work. Options are ASP.NET MVC Django CakePHP/Symfony etc.. Struts Pearl on Rails Please feel free to add more to the discussion. I currently work in ASP.NET MVC in my Spare time, and find it incredibly enjoyable to work with. It is my first experince with an MVC framework for the web, so I can't talk on the others. The reason for not pushing this at the company is that I feel that there are not many developers in the Media/Marketing world who would work with this, so it may be hard to extend the team, or at least cost more. I would like to move into learning and pushing Django, partly to learn python, partly to feel a bit cooler (all my geeky friends use Java/Python/c++). Microsoft is the dark side to most company's I work with (Marketing/Media focused). But again I'm worried about developers in this sector. PHP seems like the natural choice, but I'm scared by the sheer amount of possible frameworks, and also that the quality of developer may be lower. I know there are great php developers out there, but how many of them know multiple frameworks? Are they similar enough that anyone decent at php can pick them up? • Career Plan: The one year plan. The three year plan.

  Hi Folks, I work as a developer however I only recently began developing full time having worked for 5 years in various roles. When it comes to career planning I think I pretty much agree with The Journeyman to Craftsman model coined in The Pragmatic Probrammer and used by Bob Martin. I see myself as a journeyman and I won't call myself a "good" (for want of a better word) until I re-evaluate my skills in 5 years time. However, as part of our careers we are encouraged to make one and three year plan with specific goals that we should hit. Unfortunately, my goal is this: Write clean code that solves a problem and is easy to maintain. From a technology point of view I want to know C++ and .net programming inside out(C#, WCF etc..) But that's it. That's my plan. Is this enough?   Hi All, Im trying to write an extension method that I can use to copy values from one object property to another object of a different type, as long as the property names and types match exactly. I read here that GetType() should unbox the Nullable<T> so it returns T but if I call that on PropertyInfo.PropertyType I get ReflectedMemberInfo and not the type T im looking for. I think im missing something obvious here, so I thought I would throw it open to SO to get some advice. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Jamee

  Hi, i started to try reverse debugging with gdb 7, followin the tutorial: http://www.sourceware.org/gdb/wiki/ProcessRecord/Tutorial and I thought, great! Then I started to debug a real program which gives an error at the end. So I run it with gdb, and I put a breakpoint just before the place I think the error appears. Then I type "record" in order to start to recrd actions for future reverse-debugging. But after some steps I get Process record doesn't support instruction 0xf0d at address 0x2aaaab4c4b4e. Process record: failed to record execution log. Program received signal SIGTRAP, Trace/breakpoint trap. 0x00002aaaab4c4b4e in memcpy () from /lib64/libc.so.6 (gdb) n Single stepping until exit from function memcpy, which has no line number information. Process record doesn't support instruction 0xf0d at address 0x2aaaab4c4b4e. Process record: failed to record execution log. Program received signal SIGABRT, Aborted. 0x00002aaaab4c4b4e in memcpy () from /lib64/libc.so.6 Before I look at in in detail, I wonder if this feature is still buggy, or if I should start to record from the beginning. • Avoiding GC thrashing with WSE 3.0 MTOM service

  For historical reasons, I have some WSE 3.0 web services that I cannot upgrade to WCF on the server side yet (it is also a substantial amount of work to do so). These web services are being used for file transfers from client to server, using MTOM encoding. This can also not be changed in the short term, for reasons of compatibility. Secondly, they are being called from both Java and .NET, and therefore need to be cross-platform, hence MTOM. How it works is that an "upload" WebMethod is called by the client, sending up a chunk of data at a time, since files being transferred could potentially be gigabytes in size. However, due to not being able to control parts of the stack before the WebMethod is invoked, I cannot control the memory usage patterns of the web service. The problem I am running into is for file sizes from 50MB or so onwards, performance is absolutely killed because of GC, since it appears that WSE 3.0 buffers each chunk received from the client in a new byte[] array, and by the time we've done 50MB we're spending 20-30% of time doing GC. I've played with various chunk sizes, from 16k to 2MB, with no real great difference in results. Smaller chunks are killed by the latency involved with round-tripping, and larger chunks just postpone the slowdown until GC kicks in. Any bright ideas on cutting down on the garbage created by WSE? Can I plug into the pipeline somehow and jury-rig something that has access to the client's request stream and streams it to the WebMethod? I'm aware that it is possible to "stream" responses to the client using WSE (albeit very ugly), but this problem is with requests from the client.

• Good Learning Method for Objective-C?

  Hi I know this must be asked a millions times and can't be easy to answer as there is o definitive method, but any help would be appreciated, thanks. I have been playing around with all sorts of things in Xcode and with Objective-C, however I can't seem to find a good way of learning things in an efficient way. I have bought the book 'Programming in Objective-C 2.0' and its great but just lays down the basics it seems. I want to learn in the 2D game development direction, then of course 3D after nailing that, if thats the right thing to do? I am 17 currently in year 13, last year of school/A Levels and am almost definitely taking a gap year. Any good, well known reputable courses online or offline (real world)? This is my first programming language, and I am absolutely serious about learning this. One last question, is when learning things online, I have in the past started building a feature and learning a certain aspect in programming only to find out after adding more its slows down the app or its to inefficient. Is the key to use a certain method in a certain situation (being os many ways to do the same thing) or use any of those methods and refine it in your app to make it run smoothly? Sorry, its hard for me to know when I have little experience, thus far. Sorry for rambling on! I would appreciate any help, thank you!

• JQuery Autocomplete plugin not working with JQuery 1.4.1

  I've been using the JQuery Autocomplete plugin with JQuery version 1.3.2, and it has been working great. I recently updated JQuery in my project to version 1.4.2, and the Autocomplete plugin is now broken. The JQuery code to add items to a textbox on my web page doesn't seem to be getting called at all. Does anyone know if the JQuery Autocomplete plugin is incompatible with JQuery version 1.4.2, and if there is a fix for this problem? • Absolute positioned div jumps outside containing div in IE7

  Having trouble with a couple of display issues in IE7. Firstly, my large text headers display too far up in Internet Explorer (all pages) Secondly, my descriptions on my Portfolio pages end up outside their containing divs. Works great on FF/Chrome/Opera/Safari though! You'll see what I mean: http://bit.ly/a3hUD4 (I've used bitly so my dumb questions don't show up when someone googles my website). I've googled extensively. Not sure if problem number 2 is a overflow issue, or a absolute positioning bug in IE. • Why doesn't this jQuery snippet work in IE8 like it does in Chrome/Firefox (live demo included)?

  I asked for help earlier on Stackoverflow involving highlighting spans with the same Class when a mouse hovers over any Span with that same Class. Here is a screenshot of it in IE8, with my mouse hovered over the " min) { min" section in the middle. As you can see, it highlighted the span that the mouse is hovering over perfectly fine. However, it has also highlighted some random spans above and below it that don't have the same class! Only the span's with the same Class as the one where the mouse is over should be highlighted green. In this screenshot, only that middle green section should be green. Here is a screenshot of it working properly in Firefox/Chrome with my mouse in the exact same position: This screenshot is correct as the span that the mouse is over (the green section) is the only one in this section that shares that class. Why is IE8 randomly green-highlighting spans when it shouldn't be (they don't share the same class) using my little jQuery snippet? So far I have this as my jquery code $('#main').find('.sub_main').each( function() { alert('hi'); }); The alert is just a test that it should show "hi" twice. But this is not working. • jQuery: How can I animate to a taller height with the height being added to the top of the element?

  Hi, I have a simple problem but I am not sure how to solve it. Basically I have some hidden content that, once expanded, requires a height of 99px. While collapsed the element holding it section#newsletter is set to be 65px in height. LIVE EXAMPLE: http://dev.supply.net.nz/asap-finance-static/ On the click of a#signup_form the section#newsletter is expanded to 99px using the following jQuery: $('#newsletter_form').hide(); // hide the initial form fields $('#form_signup').click(function(event) { event.preventDefault(); // stop click // animate $('section#newsletter').animate({height: 99}, 400, function() { $('#newsletter_form').show(300); }) }); All this works great except for the fact that this element sits in a sticky footer so its initial height is used to position it. Animating the height of this element causes scrollbars on the browser, because the 34px added are added to the bottom of the element, so my question: How can I add these 34px to the top of the element so the height expands upwards into the body not downwards?   Hi all, I am trying to get a matlab-compiled exe running on Azure cloud, and for that purpose need to get a v78.zip onto the local storage of the cloud and unzip it, before I can try to run an exe on the cloud. The program works fine when executed locally, but on deployment gives and error at line marked below in the code.   Dear all, I have a following question. I have to generate many files based on sql query. Let's say for example, I have get from database a list of orders made today and genarate file for each order and later store each file on ftp. Ideally I would like to get follewing. Not quite sure how to get it. from(MyBean).to(Ftp) The problem and main question is how to generate multiple messages by custom bean (for example). I am not sure if splitter EIP is ok in this case because in my case I have not just one message to split, but I just have to generate and send many messages. http://camel.apache.org/splitter.html I hope, someone meet this problem before. If the task will be to generate just one file - everything is quite simple - you need just fill Exchange.OutMessage (or something like this). • Why can't perfmon see instances of my custom performance counter?

  I'm creating some custom performance counters for an application. I wrote a simple C# tool to create the categories and counters. For example, the code snippet below is basically what I'm running. Then, I run a separate app that endlessly refreshes the raw value of the counter. While that runs, the counter and dummy instance are seen locally in perfmon. The problem I'm having is that the monitoring system we use can't see the instances in the multi-instance counter I've created when viewing remotely from another server. When using perfmon to browse the counters, I can see the category and counters, but the instances box is grayed out and I can't even select "All instances", nor can I click "Add". Using other access methods, like [typeperf][1] exhibit similar issues. I'm not sure if this is a server or code issue. This is only reproducible in the production environment where I need it. On my desktop and development servers, it works great. I'm a local admin on all servers. • AdornedElement Properties in a Trigger

  I have an Adorner in XAML that I'm using for ErrorValidation. Basically I have a grid that I want to display on two conditions (if the "AdornedElement" IsFocused or IsMouseOver). Below is a code snippet where I'm binding - successfully - to the IsFocused of the AdornedElement, but as you can tell that only solves 1/2 the conditions. Now I can't pass another binding into the converter, nor can I create a property that handles both (needs to be XAML only solution). <AdornedElementPlaceholder x:Name="errorAdorner" /> ... <Grid x:Name="ErrorDetails" Visibility="{Binding ElementName=errorAdorner, Path=AdornedElement.IsFocused, Converter={StaticResource BooleanToVisibilityConverter}}" /> ... What I want to do is use triggers to handle this, the only problem is I can't access the AdornedElement's properties on a trigger. Something like this ... <Trigger SourceName="errorAdorner" Property="AdornedElement.IsFocused" Value="True"> <Setter TargetName="ErrorDetails" Property="Visibility" Value="Visible" /> </Trigger> This would also help as part of what I want to do is trigger animations, rather than just setting the visibility. • Does mod_php honor HEAD requests properly?

  The HTTP/1.1 RFC stipulates "The HEAD method is identical to GET except that the server MUST NOT return a message-body in the response." I know Apache honors the RFC but modules don't have to. My question is, does mod_php5 honor this? The reason I ask is because I just came across an article saying that PHP developers should check this themselves with: if (stripos($_SERVER['REQUEST_METHOD'], 'HEAD') !== FALSE) { exit(); } but seeing as how browsers send HEAD requests for cache checking it seems unlikely to me that no book, docs, etc., advise PHP developers to do this check. I googled a second and not much turned up, other than some people saying they try to strange things like mod_rewrite/redirect after getting HEAD requests and some old bug ticket from like 2002 claiming that mod_php still executed the rest of the script by default. So I just ran a quick test by using PECL::HTTP to run http_head('http://mysite.com/test-head-request.php'); while having: <?php error_log('REST OF SCRIPT STILL RAN'); ?> in test-head-request.php to see if the rest of the script still executed, and it didn't. I figure that should be enough to settle it, but want to get more feedback and maybe help clear up confusion for anyone else who has wondered about this. So if anyone knows off the top of their head (no pun intended) - or have any conventions they use for receiving HEAD requests, that'd be great. Otherwise, I'll grep the C source later and respond in a comment with my findings. Thanks.

• What headaches should I expect from using Trac?

  No tool is perfect, and I'm about to start several long-term projects using Trac, and wanted a heads up of the kinds of problems I may or may not experience with it. In other words, Trac meets my needs in the short term, and I've already made the decision to use it, but I want to know what to expect down the road. I am not looking for: "Use product X instead of Trac because..." answers. "Trac is great because..." answers. A comparison to any other specific system. "Trac doesn't support Feature X" answers. I can read the feature list too, thank you very much. I am looking for: "Feature X does not behave as expected..." "Trac behaves oddly when..." "Trac doesn't fully support..." "Trac itself has a known bug that will likely never be fixed..." And especially "Trac can't handle..." etc So, what Trac-induced headaches do I have to look forward to? For future reference, this question was asked while Trac v0.11 was the latest stable release.

• Building a News-feed that comprises posts "created by user's connections" && "on the topics user is following"

  I am working on a project of Questions & Answers website that allows a user to follow questions on certain topics from his network. A user's news-feed wall comprises of only those questions that have been posted by his connections and tagged on the topics that he is following(his expertise topics). I am confused what database's datamodel would be most fitting for such an application. The project needs to consider the future provisions for scalability and high performance issues. I have been looking at Cassandra and MySQL solutions as of now. After my study of Cassandra I realized that Simple news-feed design that shows all the posts from network would be easy to design using Cassandra by executing fast writes to all followers of a user about the post from user. But for my kind of application where there is an additional filter of 'followed topics', (ie, the user receives posts "created by his network" && "on topics user is following"), I could not convince myself with a good schema design in Cassandra. I hope if I missed something because of my short understanding of cassandra, perhaps, can you please help me out with your suggestions of how this news-feed could be implemented in Cassandra ? • Facebook IOS SDK: Error in Publish Story Dialog

  I've successfully set up the "DemoApp" project from the Facebook IOS SDK to use my "OKC ThunderCast" Facebook application. I have also configured another "Tester" application from scratch to successfully use the Facebook SDK and publish stories to my news feed. However, in my production application, I always get this result when calling the "dialog" method. I am using it successfully in other applications. 2) Safari is opened and the user is successfully authenticated and authorized 3) The application is called back and the "handleOpenUrl" method is called, which calls the "fbDidLogin" method of the UIViewController - (BOOL)application:(UIApplication *)application handleOpenURL:(NSURL *)url { Facebook *fb = [FacebookSingleton sharedInstance].facebook; return [fb handleOpenURL:url]; } 4) The same UIViewController handles the "fbDidLogin" event, and calls the "dialog" method - (void)fbDidLogin { [[FacebookSingleton sharedInstance].facebook dialog:@"feed" andDelegate:self]; } I also have the necessary "URL Schemes" and "URL Types" entries in the .plist file. To my eyes, I am using exactly the same code in the "DemoApp", "Tester", and production applications. But while the DemoApp and Tester work, I always see this HTML error in the feed dialog in my production application. Has anyone seen a similar issue? Could it be related to the Facebook "Bundle ID" setting in the Facebook application settings? Is there some build or .plist setting that is different? • Catching 'Last Record' in Coldfusion for IE javascript bug

  I'm using ColdFusion to pull UK postcodes into an array for display on a Google Map. This happens dynamically from a SQL database, so the numbers can range from 1 to 100+ the script works great, however, in IE (groan) it decides to display one point way off line, over in California somewhere. I fixed this issue in a previous webapp, this was due to the comma between each array item still being present at the end. Works fine in Firefox, Safari etc, but not IE. But, that one was using a set 10 records, so was easy to fix. I just need a little if statement to wrap around my comma to hide it when it hits the last record. I can't seem to get it right. Any tips/suggestions? here is the line of code in question: var address = [<cfloop query="getApplicant"><cfif getApplicant.dbHomePostCode GT ""><cfoutput>'#getApplicant.dbHomePostCode#',</cfoutput></cfif> </cfloop>]; Hopefully someone can help with this rather simple request. • Solution for cleaning an image cache directory on the SD card

  I've got an app that is heavily based on remote images. They are usually displayed alongside some data in a ListView. A lot of these images are new, and a lot of the old ones will never be seen again. I'm currently storing all of these images on the SD card in a custom cache directory (ala evancharlton's magnatune app). I noticed that after about 10 days, the directory totals ~30MB. This is quite a bit more than I expected, and it leads me to believe that I need to come up with a good solution for cleaning out old files... and I just can't think of a great one. Maybe you can help. These are the ideas that I've had: Delete old files. When the app starts, start a background thread, and delete all files older than X days. This seems to pose a problem, though, in that, if the user actively uses the app, this could make the device sluggish if there are hundreds of files to delete. After creating the files on the SD card, call new File("/path/to/file").deleteOnExit(); This will cause all files to be deleted when the VM exits (I don't even know if this method works on Android). This is acceptable, because, even though the files need to be cached for the session, they don't need to be cached for the next session. It seems like this will also slow the device down if there are a lot of files to be deleted when the VM exits. Delete old files, up to a max number of files. Same as #1, but only delete N number of files at a time. I don't really like this idea, and if the user was very active, it may never be able to catch up and keep the cache directory clean. That's about all I've got. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

• Automatic web form testing/filling

  I recently became lead on getting an inordinate amount of testing done in a very short period of time. We have many different web forms, using custom (Telerik) controls that need to be tested for proper data validation and sensible handling of the data. Some of the forms are several pages long with 30-80 different controls for data entry. I am looking for a software solution (that is free) that would allow me to automate the process of filling in these forms by designing a script, or using a UI. The other requirement is that I can't use any browsers but IE6 (terrible, I know). I have previously used AutoHotkey to great success for automatic Windows form testing, since Autohotkey's API allows you to directly reference controls on the Windows form. However Autohotkey does not have similar support for web forms (everything is just one big "InternetExplorer" control). While I would prefer that I could script some variance in the data to help serialize each test, it's not necessary, as I could go back through and manually edit a field or two (plus "break" whatever control I'm currently testing) to serialize each test. If you've ever seen Spawner: http://forge.mysql.com/projects/project.php?id=214 It's almost exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for (Spawner generates dummy SQL data, as opposed to dummy webform data) - but I won't be picky, I've got a really short deadline to meet and had this thrust in my lap just today. ;) Edit1: One of the challenges of just using Autohotkey to simulate keyboard input (tabbing through controls) is that some controls don't currently have tab index (bug), and some controls cause a page reload after modification, resulting in inconsistent control focus (tabbing screwed up). Our application makes heavy use of page reloads to populate fields (select a location, it auto-populates a city, for example).

• How would I make a mouse controlled physics object in Box2D / AS3?

  I recently created this tennis game using my own basic physics: http://martywallace.com/sandbox/tennis/ Basically a tennis racquet sticks to your mouse and you can hit the tennis balls upward. The physics aren't that great, and I want to make a more interesting version of this game with milestones and levels in Flash. I am planning to use Box2D because I have moderate experience with it. I'm not sure how to go about creating the racquet - as far as I understand Box2D, the racquet needs a velocity to influence the velocities of the balls when you hit them (so that you can hit them harder or softer upward to keep them up). With that said, I'm assuming I can't just have a kinematic body that will have its position set to the mouse, because it won't affect the velocities of the balls as expected. I've also thought about setting the velocity to the difference between the racquet position and the mouse each frame, but I am concerned that won't provide accurate positioning and am also thinking that the velocity could end up really large if you move the mouse quickly. What is the correct way to have a physics object locked to the mouse but also to have its displacement in the last frame (from where it was to the mouse) affect the balls?
