• modify the way files get opened from finder by shift-clicking (etc) as in windows

  In the windows shell it is possible to modify the default action for opening any document type when holding down a modifier key such as shift or option when double clicking. So for example I can open a jpeg in irfanview if I just double click it, in firefox if I shift-double click it or in potatoshop if I option-double click it. However on a mac I have to right click, and choose "open with..", which can be annoying when there are a lot of possible candidates (such as with jpegs) or if I want to open the file with somehting like an applescript, which won't show up on the list and will have to be found in the file system and specified manually, every.. single.. time. Is there a way of making the mac open files differently by holding down modifier keys when double clicking?

• Gentoo Linux -> Ubuntu: Can I Preserve My LVM/RAID Devices, Or Do I Need To Reformat?

  Hello: I've got a Gentoo box that I'm interested in switching over to an Ubuntu box. I currently have the partitions laid out using a mixture of RAID (mdadm) and LVM2, as specified in this document [1]. Ideally I'd like to just wipe out the non /home partition, as it's got data I'd like to keep. Is it possible to reuse the current setup, or do I need to restart? vgdisplay, vgchange -a y, etc don't yield any results from the Ubuntu LiveCD, and I'm wary to run any commands that might wipe my data. • Word 2003: Bullet style renamed; is there some way to reverse this?

  I have a machine that seems to have had its bullet style permanently changed - I previously was creating a document which had a question/answer format, where the answers were bullet points, so I created a style for them. The problem is, it seems to have stuck. If you click the "Bullet" button, the paragraph is formatted in the style. I've tried deleting the style in Normal.dot, and even deleting the Normal.dot file in the entirely - neither seems to fix the problem. Anyone have any other bright ideas on how to fix it?

• Change Envelope From to match From header in Postfix

  I am using Postfix as a gateway for my domain and need it to change or rewrite the Envelope From address to match the From header. For example, the From: header is "[email protected]" and the Envelope From is "[email protected]". I want Postfix to make the Envelope From "[email protected]" before relaying it on. I took a look at the Postfix Address Rewriting document but couldn't find anything that matched my use case. (In case you're curious why I need to do this: Gmail uses the same Envelope From when sending from a particular account, no matter which From: address you choose to use. I would prefer not to disclose the account being used to send the email. Also, it messes with SPF/DMARC domain alignment - see 4.2.2 of the DMARC draft spec.)

• disable 250 character URL limit in Internet Explorer

  Users of a SharePoint Document Library are getting this error: The URL for this file is too long for the application. A temporary copy of this file will be opened on your computer. You must save this copy as a new file. After doing some research, it appears Internet Explorer has a limit of about ~250 characters for a URL. Some URLs provided by SharePoint far exceed this limit. One example being 790 characters long. Is there a way to disable this limit? I have looked, but there doesnt appear to be a solution, other than shortening the folder/path names.

• Overwrite text in Windows Notepad

  I would like to be able to overwrite text in Windows Notepad. I am using Windows 7 Professional. Ideally I would like to be able to position the cursor next to a string of text and erase that text by pressing the spacebar until the cursor has passed over every character in the string without adding additional spaces to the document. Is that possible? I have tried pressing the 'Insert' key, but that does not help. Nor does using 'Num Lock' and pressing the 'Ins' or '0' key. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a solution elsewhere on the internet. I do not think I am using notepad++. The application is listed as 'notepad.exe' under 'Properties'. Thank you for any suggestions.

• Conflict Minerals - Design to Compliance

  Dr. Christina  Schröder - Principal PLM Consultant, Enterprise PLM Solutions EMEA What does the Conflict Minerals regulation mean? Conflict Minerals has recently become a new buzz word in the manufacturing industry, particularly in electronics and medical devices. Known as the "Dodd-Frank Section 1502", this regulation requires SEC listed companies to declare the origin of certain minerals by 2014. The intention is to reduce the use of tantalum, tungsten, tin, and gold which originate from mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and adjoining countries that are controlled by violent armed militia abusing human rights. Manufacturers now request information from their suppliers to see if their raw materials are sourced from this region and which smelters are used to extract the metals from the minerals. A standardized questionnaire has been developed for this purpose (download and further information). Soon, even companies which are not directly affected by the Conflict Minerals legislation will have to collect and maintain this information since their customers will request the data from their suppliers. Furthermore, it is expected that the public opinion and consumer interests will force manufacturers to avoid the use of metals with questionable origin. Impact for existing products Several departments are involved in the process of collecting data and providing conflict minerals compliance information. For already marketed products, purchasing typically requests Conflict Minerals declarations from the suppliers. In order to address requests from customers, technical operations or product management are usually responsible for keeping track of all parts, raw materials and their suppliers so that the required information can be provided. For complex BOMs, it is very tedious to maintain complete, accurate, up-to-date, and traceable data. Any product change or new supplier can, in addition to all other implications, have an effect on the Conflict Minerals compliance status. Influence on product development  It makes sense to consider compliance early in the planning and design of new products. Companies should evaluate which metals are needed or contained in supplier parts and if these could originate from problematic sources. The answer influences the cost and risk analysis during the development. If it is known early on that a part could be non-compliant with respect to Conflict Minerals, alternatives can be evaluated and thus costly changes at a later stage can be avoided. Integrated compliance management  Ideally, compliance data for Conflict Minerals, but also for other regulations like REACH and RoHS, should be managed in an integrated supply chain system. The compliance status is directly visible across the entire BOM at any part level and for the finished product. If data is missing, a request to the supplier can be triggered right away without having to switch to another system. The entire process, from identification of the relevant parts, requesting information, handling responses, data entry, to compliance calculation is fully covered end-to-end while being transparent for all stakeholders. Agile PLM Product Governance and Compliance (PG&C) The PG&C module extends Agile PLM with exactly this integrated functionality. As with the entire Agile product suite, PG&C can be configured according to customer requirements: data fields, attributes, workflows, routing, notifications, and permissions, etc… can be quickly and easily tailored to a customer’s needs. Optionally, external databases can be interfaced to query commercially available sources of Conflict Minerals declarations which obviates the need for a separate supplier request in many cases. Suppliers can access the system directly for data entry through a special portal. The responses to the standard EICC-GeSI questionnaire can be imported by the supplier or internally. Manual data entry is also supported. A set of compliance-specific dashboards and reports complement the functionality Conclusion  The increasing number of product compliance regulations, for which Conflict Minerals is just one example, requires companies to implement an efficient data and process management in this area. Consumer awareness in this matter increases as well so that an integrated system from development to production also provides a competitive advantage. • After upgrading to 13.10, biblatex and biber are not compiling my references

  I am working on a thesis using LaTeX, with my references relying on biblatex-apa. Ubuntu 13.04 provided all my LaTeX needs. But after upgrading to 13.10, the biblatex / biber combo will no longer compile my APA-style references. No other changes have been made to my documents or references -- and the rest of the document appears fine (albeit with broken references and no bibliography). I found reference to a possible cause -- which is that biblatex 1.7-1 is incompatible with texlive 2013 (as available through the 13.10 repositories) -- and that issue may be fixed by biblatex 2.7a-1 which has been committed upsteam in Debian. See: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=718244 However, that doesn't help me much, as I need to compile my references quite soon. How can I get my references to compile in the meantime? Is there a patched biblatex or biber that I can manually slot in place? Is the upstream fix on its way? or do I need to go to TexLive and do a replacement install directly (which is not my preference). Thanks!

• PASS Summit 2012: keynote and Mobile BI announcements #sqlpass

  Today at PASS Summit 2012 there have been several announcements during the keynote. Moreover, other news have not been highlighted in the keynote but are equally if not more important for the BI community. Let’s start from the big news in the keynote (other details on SQL Server Blog): Hekaton: this is the codename for in-memory OLTP technology that will appear (I suppose) in the next release of the SQL Server relational engine. The improvement in performance and scalability is impressive and it enables new scenarios. I’m curious to see whether it can be used also to improve ETL performance and how it differs from using SSD technology. Updates on Columnstore: In the next major release of SQL Server the columnstore indexes will be updatable and it will be possible to create a clustered index with Columnstore index. This is really a great news for near real-time reporting needs! Polybase: in 2013 it will debut SQL Server 2012 Parallel Data Warehouse (PDW), which will include the Polybase technology. By using Polybase a single T-SQL query will run queries across relational data and Hadoop data. A single query language for both. Sounds really interesting for using BigData in a more integrated way with existing relational databases. And, of course, to load a data warehouse using BigData, which is the ultimate goal that we all BI Pro have, right? SQL Server 2012 SP1: the Service Pack 1 for SQL Server 2012 is available now and it enable the use of PowerPivot for SharePoint and Power View on a SharePoint 2013 installation with Excel 2013. Power View works with Multidimensional cube: the long-awaited feature of being able to use PowerPivot with Multidimensional cubes has been shown by Amir Netz in an amazing demonstration during the keynote. The interesting thing is that the data model behind was based on a many-to-many relationship (something that is not fully supported by Power View with Tabular models). Another interesting aspect is that it is Analysis Services 2012 that supports DAX queries run on a Multidimensional model, enabling the use of any future tool generating DAX queries on top of a Multidimensional model. There are still no info about availability by now, but this is *not* included in SQL Server 2012 SP1. So what about Mobile BI? Well, even if not announced during the keynote, there is a dedicated session on this topic and there are very important news in this area: iOS, Android and Microsoft mobile platforms: the commitment is to get data exploration and visualization capabilities working within June 2013. This should impact at least Power View and SharePoint/Excel Services. This is the type of UI experience we are all waiting for, in order to satisfy the requests coming from users and customers. The important news here is that native applications will be available for both iOS and Windows 8 so it seems that Android will be supported initially only through the web. Unfortunately we haven’t seen any demo, so it’s not clear what will be the offline navigation experience (and whether there will be one). But at least we know that Microsoft is working on native applications in this area. I’m not too surprised that HTML5 is not the magic bullet for all the platforms. The next PASS Business Analytics conference in 2013 seems a good place to see this in action, even if I hope we don’t have to wait other six months before seeing some demo of native BI applications on mobile platforms! Viewing Reporting Services reports on iPad is supported starting with SQL Server 2012 SP1, which has been released today. This is another good reason to install SP1 on SQL Server 2012. • Strategies for managUse of types in Python

  I'm a long time programmer in C# but have been coding in Python for the past year. One of the big hurdles for me was the lack of type definitions for variables and parameters. Whereas I totally get the idea of duck typing, I do find it frustrating that I can't tell the type of a variable just by looking at it. This is an issue when you look at someone else's code where they've used ambiguous names for method parameters (see edit below). In a few cases, I've added asserts to ensure parameters comply with an expected type but this goes against the whole duck typing thing. On some methods, I'll document the expected type of parameters (eg: list of user objects), but even this seems to go against the idea of just using an object and let the runtime deal with exceptions. What strategies do you use to avoid typing problems in Python? Edit: Example of the parameter naming issues: If our code base we have a task object (ORM object) and a task_obj object (higher level object that embeds a task). Needless to say, many methods accept a parameter named 'task'. The method might expect a task or a task_obj or some other construct such as a dictionary of task properties - it is not clear. It is them up to be to look at how that parameter is used in order to work out what the method expects.

• Creating Parent-Child Relationships in SSRS

  As I have been working on SQL Server Reporting Services reports the last couple of weeks I ran into a scenario where I needed to present a parent-child data layout.  It is rare that I have seen a report that was a simple tabular or matrix format and this report continued that trend.  I found that the processes for developing complex SSRS reports aren’t as commonly described as I would have thought.  Below I will layout the process that I went through to create a solution. I started with a List control which will contain the layout of the master (parent) information.  This allows for a main repeating report part.  The dataset for this report should include the data elements needed to be passed to the subreport as parameters.  As you can see the layout is simply text boxes that are bound to the dataset. The next step is to set a row group on the List row.  When the dialog appears select the field that you wish to group your report by.  A good example in this case would be the employee name or ID. Create a second report which becomes the subreport.  The example below has a matrix control.  Create the report as you would any parameter driven document by parameterizing the dataset. Add the subreport to the main report inside the row of the List control.  This can be accomplished by either dragging the report from the solution explorer or inserting a Subreport control and then setting the report name property. The last step is to set the parameters on the subreport.  In this case the subreport has EmpId and ReportYear as parameters.  While some of the documentation on this states that the dialog will automatically detect the child parameters, but this has not been my experience.  You must make sure that the names match exactly.  Tie the name of the parameter to either a field in the dataset or a parameter of the parent report. del.icio.us Tags: SQL Server Reporting Services,SSRS,SQL Server,Subreports

• Find edited Word attachment opened via Windows Mail (Vista)

  If you open (not save) a Word attachment in Windows Mail, then it will open the document up in Microsoft Word. This is saved somewhere, and you can edit the file and save it (i.e. no "save as" dialog appears). If you then close Word without explicitly saving the file somewhere, how do you then find the edited file? (Assuming that it can be found, and isn't automatically deleted). Windows Search does not find the file (presumably because it's in the folders that are excluded from search).

  Ok i saw many post's on how to serialize the value of dragged items to get hash and they tell how to save them. • Drupal + Lighttpd: enabling clean urls (rewriting)

  I'm emulating Ubuntu on my mac, and I use it as a server. I've installed lighttpd + Drupal and the following configuration section requires a domain name in order to make clean urls to work.   Last week we had the fourth webcast in our WebCenter in Action webcast series, "ResCare Solves Content Lifecycle Challenges with Oracle WebCenter", where customer Joe Lichtefeld from ResCare and Wayne Boerger & Doug Thompson from Oracle Partner TEAM Informatics shared how Oracle WebCenter is powering allowing ResCare to solve content lifecycle challenges, reduce compliance and business risks, and increase adoption of intranet as primary business communication tool In case you missed it, here's a recap of the Q&A.   Joe Lichtefeld, ResCare  Q: Did you run into any issues in the deployment of the platform?A: We experienced very few issues when implementing the content management and search functionalities. There were some challenges in determining the metadata structure. We tried to find a fine balance between having enough fields to provide the functionality needed, but trying to limit the impact to the contributing members.  Q: What has been the biggest benefit your end users have seen?A: The biggest benefit to date is two-fold. Content on the intranet can be maintained by the individual contributors more timely than in our old process of all requests being updated by IT. The other big benefit is the ability to find the most current version of a document instead of relying on emails and phone calls to track down the "current" version. Q: Was there any resistance internally when implementing the solution? If so, how did you overcome that?A: We experienced very little resistance. Most of our community groups were eager to be able to contribute and maintain their information. We had the normal hurdles of training and follow-up training with implementing a new system and process. As our second phase rolled out access to all employees, we have received more positive feedback on the accessibility of information. Wayne Boerger & Doug Thompson, TEAM Informatics Q: Can you integrate multiple repositories with the Google Search Appliance? Yes, the Google Search Appliance is designed to index lots of different repositories, from both public and internal sources. There are included connectors to many repositories, such as SharePoint, databases, file systems, LDAP, and with the TEAM GSA Connector and the Oracle Content Server. And the index for these repositories can be configured into different collections depending on the use cases that each customer has, and really, for each need within a customer environment. Q: How many different filters can you add when the search results are returned? A: Presuming this question is about the filtering on the search results. You can add as many filters as you like and it can be done by collection or any number of other criteria. Most importantly, customers now have the ability to limit the returned content by a set metadata value. Q: With the TEAM Sites Connector, what types of content can you sync? A: There’s really no limit; if it can be checked into the content server, then it is eligible for sync into Sites.  So basically, any digital file that has relevance to a Sites implementation can be checked into the WC Content central repository and then the connector can/will manage it. Q: Using the Connector, are there any limitations around where in Sites that synced content can be used? A: There are no limitations about where it can be used. When setting up your environment to use it, you just need to think through the different destinations on the Sites side that might use the content; that way you’ve got the right information to create the rules needed for the connector. • PDF with 200 DPI JPEGs look blurry in viewer

  I often scan images, and I usually do that as 200 DPI JPEG files. If I look at them in Gwenview (Linux image viewer) the text looks readable, and on 100% it looks perfectly sharp. When I convert them into a PDF, using convert from the Imagick package and open that in Okular or Evince (Linux document viewer) the text looks blurry. I wrote a little script that creates a HTML page with all the images and opens it in the browser. Firefox scales the images a little sharper than the PDF viewers. Firefox JPEGs: Evince PDF Is there any way to get the PDF to scale the images sharply?

• MSExchangeMailSubmission service is not listed or running; sent mail not working

  I am running a new Exchange 2007 SP1 system. I moved the mailboxes from the old Exchange 2003 server, and incoming mail is working. But outgoing mail is not working at all; even inside my domain. Lots of debugging and searching lead me to believe that the problem is that the "Microsoft Exchange Mail Submission Service" (AKA MSExchangeMailSubmission) is not running. In fact, it's not even listed in the Services list. This document (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998342.aspx) says that this service is installed by the Mailbox server role. My server is running the Mailbox role, as well as the Hub Transport and Client Access roles. How do I get this service to show up in the list, so that I can start it up? Thanks.

• How to represent an agile project to people focused on waterfall [closed]

  Our team has been asked to represent our development efforts in a project plan. No one is unhappy with our work or questioning our ability to deliver, we are just participating in an IT cattle call for project plans. Trouble is we are an agile team and haven't thought about our work in terms of a formal project plan. While we have a general idea of what we are working on next we aren't 100% sure until we plan an iteration. Until now our team has largely operated in a vacuum and has not been required to present our methodology or metrics to outside parties. We follow most of the practices espoused in Extreme Programming. We hold quarterly planning meetings to have a general idea of the stories we are going to work on for a quarter. That said, our stories are documented on 3x5 cards and are only estimated at the beginning of the iteration in which they are going to be worked. After estimation we document the story in Team Foundation Sever. During an iteration, we attach code to stories and mark stories as completed once finished. From this data we are able to generate burn down and velocity charts. Most importantly we know our average velocity for an iteration keeping us from biting off more than we can chew. I am not looking to modify the way we do development but want to present our development activities in a report that someone only familiar with waterfall will understand. In What Does an Agile Project Plan Look Like, Kent McDonald does a good job laying out the differences between agile and waterfall project plans. • XSF-FO intellisense and national languages with Apache FOP

  Some time ago I showed how to get an intellisense and how to configure the FO.NET to acquire national characters inside the generated pdf files. Due to the limitations that I mensioned in my previous post, I started playing with the Apache FOP. In this post I want to show, how to acquire the same result as I showed in the two posts related to FO.NET.   Intellisense   To get the intellisense from the XSL-FO templates set the xsi:schemaLocation the same way I showed it in this post. The only diffrence to FO.NET is that, during generating the document by the code I showed last time we will get an exception:   org.apache.fop.fo.ValidationException: Invalid property encountered on "fo:root": xsi:schemaLocation (See position 6:11)   Fortunatelly there is a very easy way to resolve this without removing the entire attribute along with the intellisense. Add to the FopFactory the ignoreNamespace by:   FopFactory fopFactory = FopFactory.newInstance(); fopFactory.ignoreNamespace(http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance);   Notice that, the url specified in this method this is a namespace for the xmlns:xsi namespace, not xsi.schemaLocation.   Fonts / national characters   This point is a little dfferent to acquire, but not more complicated that it was with FO.NET. To set the fonts in Apache FOP 1.0, we need a configuration file. A sample one can be get from the directory where we unpacked the fop binaries, from conf subdirectory. There is a file called fop.xconf. We must copy this file to our solution. In the simplest way, in the <fonts> tag we can add  <auto-detect/>. Thanks to this, FOP will index all fonts available on the installed operating system. There probably should be no problem, if we have a http handler or a WCF Service on the server that serves the generated pdf documents. In this situation we can use all available fonts on this server.   To use this config file, we must set a path to it:   FopFactory fopFactory = FopFactory.newInstance(); fopFactory.setUserConfig(new File("fop.xconf"));
