De-duplicating backup tool on a block basis? [closed]

I am looking for an (ideally free as in speech or beer) backup tool for Unix-like OS which can store deduplicated backups, i.e. only nonredundant content takes up additional space. I already looked at dirvish (my first candidate) and rsnapshot which use hardlinks to achieve deduplication on a per-file level. However, as I want to back up large files (Thunderbird mailboxes 3GB, VMware images 10GB), such file are stored again entirely even if just a few bytes change. Then there are rsync-based tools like rdiff-backup which only store deltas and a current mirror. However, as the deltas are generated against each previous mirror, it is difficult to fine-tune the retention granularity (only keep one backup after a week, etc.) because the deltas would have to be re-evaluated. Another approach is to partition content into blocks and store each block only if it is not stored yet, otherwise just linking it to the first occurrence. The only tool I know of that does this by now is obnam (http://liw.fi/obnam), and it even supports zlib-compression and gpg-encryption -- nice! But it is very slow, AFAICT. Does any one know any other, solid backup software which supports deduplication on a sub-file level, ideally with at least some management options (show/select/delete generations...)?

How can use mod_rewrite to redirect a multiple specific URLs containing multiple query strings?

Hi there folks, we recently migrated a site from a custom CMS to drupal. In an effort to preserve some links that our users bookmarked (we have about 120 redirects) we would like to forward the original URLs to a new URL. I have been searching for a couple days, but can't seem to find anything simple to what I need. We have existing URLS that contain one or more query strings, for example: /article.php?issue_id=12&article_id=275 and we would like to forward to the new location: http://foobar.edu/content/super-happy-fun-article I started using: RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^/article\.php?issue_id=12&article_id=275$ http://foobar.edu/content/super-happy-fun-article [R=301,L] This, however, does not work. A simple RewriteRule works: RewriteRule ^test\.php$ index.php It is unclear to me how I need to use {QUERY_STRING} with multiple Basically it's 120 simple redirects that go from one existing URL to a new one. I don't need ranges [0-9], because there is no sequential order to existing URLs. Perhaps I can do what I need with RewriteMap and a simple text file that contains a line like this: index.php?issue_id=12&articleType_section=0&articleType_id=65 http://foobar.edu/category/fall-2008 If anyone has any idea on using mod_rewrite to accomplish this or if there is a better, or more simple mod, I am open to that as well. Postfix: How to configure Postfix with virtual Dovecot mailboxes?

I have configured a Postfix mail server for two domains: domain1.com and domain2.com. In my configuration domain1 has both virtual users with Maildirs and aliases to forward mail to local users (eg. root, webmaster) and some small mailing lists. It also has some virtual mappings to non-local domains. Domain2 on the other hand has only virtual alias mappings, mainly to corresponding 'users' at domain1 (eg. mails to [email protected] should be forwarded to [email protected]). My problem is that currently Postfix accepts mail even for those users that don't exist in the system. Mail to existing users and /etc/aliases works fine. Computer Won't Boot Properly, unless in safe mode?

I bought a computer today and booted it up, but when I did I only got a blank screen. I checked to make sure it wasn't the monitor by connecting it to my old computer...it worked. I then tried connecting my monitor to both DVI ports and found that the bottom one did work. However, now it just boots up and says "loading windows" and then when the login screen is suppose to come up the screen just goes blank and monitor says "no input, check cord" (or something like that). I tried reinstalling windows and then I was able to log on normally. I used the CD's and reinstalled all the drivers, then rebooted...now I am stuck right back where I started. I tried taking out the RAM and inserting into different slots, that didn't fix anything. I was able to boot up into windows using safe-mode. I suspected that my ATI Radeon 6950 was the issue and downloaded the drivers, but I can't install them on safe-mode. Someone said to install C++ distr. and I tried doing that to fix driver installation problem of "failed to load detection driver" but it wouldn't let me do that either. Please someone help me, I don't want to have to deal with the evil redtape of sending it back to get a replacement! What are the possible problems, when wget returns code 500 but same request works in normal browsers?

Unusual HEAD requests to nonsense URLs from Chrome

I have noticed unusual traffic coming from my workstation the last couple of days. I am seeing HEAD requests sent to random character URLs, usually three or four within a second, and they appear to be coming from my Chrome browser. The requests repeat only three or four times a day, but I have not identified a particular pattern. The URL characters are different for each request. The one modification I made to my system last week that was unusual was adding the Delicious add-in/extension to both IE and Chrome. I have since removed both of these, but am still seeing the traffic. I have run virus scan (Trend Micro) and HiJackThis looking for malicious code, but I have not found any. I would appreciate any help tracking down the source of the requests, so I can determine if they are benign, or indicative of a bigger problem. Thanks.

haproxy + nginx: https trailing slashes redirected to http

I have a setup where HTTP(S) traffic goes from HAProxy to nginx. HAProxy nginx HTTP -----> :80 ----> :9080 HTTPS ----> :443 ----> :9443 I'm having troubles with implicit redirects caused by trailing slashes going from https to http, like this: $ curl -k -I https://www.example.com/subdir HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently Server: nginx/1.2.4 Date: Thu, 04 Oct 2012 12:52:39 GMT Content-Type: text/html Content-Length: 184 Location: http://www.example.com/subdir/ The reason obviously is HAProxy working as SSL unwrapper, and nginx sees only http requests. Are there tools available for trimming PDF margins?

I have an ebook I'm trying to read in PDF format on a Kindle. Unfortunately, the page headers and footers have some content (page number and copyright info, respectively) preventing the device from scaling the actual text to match its usable area viewing area, thus leaving the actual content too small to read. Various tools are available which will trim off whitespace, but the Kindle already does this; my goal, by contrast, is to remove printed matter outside of a defined bounding box, and the only tool I've found for the purpose is moderately expensive commercial software. I could probably generate a mask in Inkscape; split out the individual pages using pdftk, apply the mask to each page individually (outputting to postscript), and recombine the numerous postscript files into a single PDF. However, this decode/reencode steps would be pretty unfortunate in terms of document size; something able to operate with a bit more finesse would be ideal. I have all major operating systems handy (Windows, several modern Linux distros, a Mac, etc) so solutions don't need to be constrained by platform. Suggestions? (I've reported the issue to the author, who mentioned it to his editor, who hasn't done anything about the issue over the course of more than a month, making the zero-work approach evidently nonproductive).

Disk fragmentation when dealing with many small files

On a daily basis we generate about 3.4 Million small jpeg files. We also delete about 3.4 Million 90 day old images. To date, we've dealt with this content by storing the images in a hierarchical manner. The heriarchy is something like this: /Year/Month/Day/Source/ This heirarchy allows us to effectively delete days worth of content across all sources. The files are stored on a Windows 2003 server connected to a 14 disk SATA RAID6. We've started having significant performance issues when writing-to and reading-from the disks. This may be due to the performance of the hardware, but I suspect that disk fragmentation may be a culprit at well. Some people have recommended storing the data in a database, but I've been hesitant to do this. An other thought was to use some sort of container file, like a VHD or something. Does anyone have any advice for mitigating this kind of fragmentation? Why Are SPF Records Failing?

Ok I've been going through various different sites, resources and topics here trying to figure out what is wrong with my SPF records but no matter what I do they don't seem to pass. Here's what I have "v=spf1 +a +mx +ip4:217.78.0.92 +ip4:217.78.0.95 -all" I've tried multiple different tools to check my spf records, some give me a pass, some don't. But I can't send mail to certain google app accounts, they just bounce back all the time which is very annoying. Anyone got any ideas? I have noticed that the source IP address is not the IPV4 addresses I've defined, but Cpanel wouldn't let me add that address into it.. And here's the result of tests I'm getting back from port25.com. I'm running WHM by the way and have enabled spf and dkim. Strange Behaviour with Unicode Characters in Windows

Ok, I do not know if this is a programming question, but it certainly is a technical one so I am asking it here. I was working on some internationalization stuff in my PHP code, and in order to ensure that my generated HTML shows up Unicode correctly based on the encoding and stuff I decided to add some Chinese text to my PHP page, which then echoes it into the browser to complete my test case. So I went into google and typed "Chinese", copied the first Chinese text that the search returned (which was ??/??). I then copied it into Notepad++ which is my editor, and to my surprise showed up as boxes similar to [][]/[][]. So I thought the encoding in Notepad++ was messed up and I changed the encoding to UTF-8 and UCS, neither worked. I did it fresh in a newly encoded file, still I got the boxes. The same content when I paste into Google and StackOverFlow (like I did in this posting) shows up correct Chinese! I even opened up Windows Clipboard Viewer and the content is represented in the Clipboard as boxes! I tried pasting it into Windows Explorer address bar and using to rename a file to, but I still get boxes. But it shows up correctly when pasted into my Chrome Browser address bar! Is this a Windows issue? Since I am able to paste it correctly in SO, the data in memory should be encoded correctly right? But if that is the case why does it show up as boxes in the Clipboard Viewer? I am confused here...By the way I am using Windows XP with SP3. (I am asking this question here, even if it is not programmatic, because it is preventing me from running my programming test cases..)

Snort not detecting outgoing traffic

I'm using Snort 2.9 on windows server 2008 R2 x64, with a very simple configuration that goes like this: # Entire content of Snort.conf: alert tcp any any -> any any (sid:5000000; content:"_secret_"; msg:"TRIGGERED";) # command line: snort.exe -c etc/Snort.conf -l etc/log -A console Using my browser, I send the string "_secret_" in the url to my server (where Snort is located). Example: http://myserver.com/index.php?_secret_ Snort receives it and throws an alert, it works, no problem ! But when I try something like this : <?php // (index.php) header('XTest: _secret_'); // header echo '_secret_'; // data ?> If I just request http://myserver.com/index.php, it does not work or detect anything from the outgoing traffic even though the php file is sending the same string both in headers and in data, with no compression/encoding or whatsoever. (I checked using Wireshark) This looks to me like a Snort problem. No matter what I do it only detects receiving packets. Did anyone ever face this sort of problems with Snort ? Any idea how to fix it ?

What are the best linux permissions to use for my website?

This is a Canonical Question about File Permissions on a Linux web server. I have a Linux web server running Apache2 that hosts several websites. Each website has its own folder in /var/www/. /var/www/contoso.com/ /var/www/contoso.net/ /var/www/fabrikam.com/ The base directory /var/www/ is owned by root:root. Apache is running as www-data:www-data. The Fabrikam website is maintained by two developers, Alice and Bob. Both Contoso websites are maintained by one developer, Eve. All websites allow users to upload images. If a website is compromised, the impact should be as limited as possible. I want to know the best way to set up permissions so that Apache can serve the content, the website is secure from attacks, and the developers can still make changes. One of the websites is structured like this: /var/www/fabrikam.com /cache /modules /styles /uploads /index.php How should the permissions be set on these directories and files? I read somewhere that you should never use 777 permissions on a website, but I don't understand what problems that could cause. During busy periods, the website automatically caches some pages and stores the results in the cache folder. All of the content submitted by website visitors is saved to the uploads folder.

Notepad++ incorrect syntax highlithing?

So I want to build a XHTML 1.0 Strict based website. Using Notepad++ for syntax highlighting came as an idea to me. But when I tried to put the XML declaration (as stated in the spec, proper XHTML pages should use a XML declaration and be served as application/xhtml+xml) I can't get the entire document highlighted propperly. Why does loading a html page opens automaically the printer dialog?

I have the problem that loading a certain webpage in firefox automatically opens the printer dialog. How is that? Additional information: This only happens on firefox 24.0 on Windows 7. It neither happens on Windows Explorer in Windows 7 nor on Firefox 24 on a Linux system. This also happens when using the firefox safemode, with all add-ons disabled. I cannot post the webpage, since it is not public and restricted. Multiple javascript files are used, but none contains the expression print(). The page content does not contain the phrase 'printer'. It has nothing to do with printing something. This happens sometimes, but not always. I cannot say for sure the URL and/or the content is always identical. I can answer any other questions, like 'Does the page contain this and that...', 'does the URL contain this and that...' Basic question: What could be the reason for the annoying printer pop up?

A class meant for an alfresco behavior and its bean, how do they work and how are they deployed trough eclipse

(This is a partial repost of a question asked 10 days ago because only 1 part was answered(not included), I've rewritten it into a way better question and added 3 more tags) where do I put the DeleteAsset.class or why isn't it being found? I've put the compiled class from the bin of the workspace of eclipse into alfresco-4.2.c/tomcat/webapps/alfresco/WEB-INF/classes/com/openerp/behavior/ and right now it's giving me Error loading class [com.openerp.behavior.DeleteAsset] for bean with name 'deletionBehavior' defined in URL [file:/home/openerp/alfresco-4.2.c/tomcat/shared/classes/alfresco/extension/cust??om-web-context.xml]: problem with class file or dependent class; nested exception is java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/openerp/behavior/DeleteAsset (wrong name: DeleteAsset) when I put it in there. (See bean below!) think I've found the problem. Being a newbie to eclipse I haven't managed the dependecies well I think. Hello, I downloaded all jar files for Spring Security 3.0 and added them to my lib folder in Netbeans 6.8. Then i added Spring framework to my web application and tried to modify applicationContext.xml as given in the pdf that shipped with Spring Security. Fitting an Image to Screen on Rotation iPhone / iPad ?

I have been playing around with one of the iPhone examples from Apple' web site (ScrollViewSuite) . I am trying to tweak it a bit so that when I rotate the the iPad the image will fit into the screen in landscape mode vertical. I have been successful in getting the image to rotate, but the image is larger than the height of the landscape screen, so the bottom is below the screen. I would like to image to scale to the height of the landscape screen. I have been playing around with various autoSizingMask attributes without success. The imageView is called "zoomView" this is the actual image which loads into a scrollView called imageScrollView. Hey! So I'm trying to code something on wordpress for the first time but the validator doesn't seem to like me. Apache FOP - Table top and bottom borders missing pagebreak inside table

I am using Apache FOP to generate a PDF from a XLS FO document. I have created a test XLS FO document that contains a table with collapsed borders that with several tall rows. One of the rows starts on one page and ends on the next and this works as expected. The problem is that the bottom border of the table on the first page is missing and the top border of the table on the second pages is also missing. This works, but I need to use these functions for other things than fixing this issue so what I need to know is if there is an other sollution to the problem?

Example: Communication between Activity and Service using Messaging

I couldn't find any examples of how to send messages between an activity and a service, and spent far too many hours figuring this out. Here is an example project for others to reference. This example allows you to start or stop a service directly, and separately bind/unbind from the service. When the service is running, it increments a number at 10Hz. If the activity is bound to the service, it will display the current value. Data is transferred as an Integer and as a String so you can see how to do that two different ways. There are also buttons in the activity to send messages to the service (changes the increment-by value). Example: Communication between Activity and Service using Messaging

I couldn't find any examples of how to send messages between an activity and a service, and spent far too many hours figuring this out. Here is an example project for others to reference. This example allows you to start or stop a service directly, and separately bind/unbind from the service. When the service is running, it increments a number at 10Hz. If the activity is bound to the service, it will display the current value. Data is transferred as an Integer and as a String so you can see how to do that two different ways. There are also buttons in the activity to send messages to the service (changes the increment-by value). XML\Jquery create listings based on user selection

Alright, so what I need to try and accomplish is having a static web page that will display information pulled from an XML document and render it to the screen without refreshing. Basic AJAX stuff I guess. The trick is, as I'm trying to think this through I keep coming into 'logical' barriers mentally. Objectives: -Have a chart which displays baseball team names, wins, losses, ties. In my XML doc there is a 'pending' status, so games not completed should not be displayed.(Need help here) -Have a selection list which allows you to select a team which is populated from XML doc. (done) -Upon selecting a particular team from the aforementioned selection list the page should display in a separate area all of the planned games for that team. Including pending. Basically all of the games associated with that team and the dates (which is included in the XML file). There are a variety of tools available to help you and Support diagnose SOA Suite issues in 11g but it can be confusing as to which tool is appropriate for a particular situation and what their relationships are. This blog post will introduce the various tools and attempt to clarify what each is for and how they are related. Let's first list the tools we'll be addressing: RDA: Remote Diagnostic Agent DFW: Diagnostic Framework Selective Tracing DMS: Dynamic Monitoring Service ODL: Oracle Diagnostic Logging ADR: Automatic Diagnostics Repository ADRCI: Automatic Diagnostics Repository Command Interpreter WLDF: WebLogic Diagnostic Framework This overview is not mean to be a comprehensive guide on using all of these tools, however, extensive reference materials are included that will provide many more details on their execution. Another point to note is that all of these tools are applicable for Fusion Middleware as a whole but specific products may or may not have implemented features to leverage them. A couple of the tools have a WebLogic Scripting Tool or 'WLST' interface. WLST is a command interface for executing pre-built functions and custom scripts against a domain. A detailed WLST tutorial is beyond the scope of this post but you can find general information here. This innovative demonstration uses a case-study approach to show business users how they can easily streamline their Business Processes - delivering greater efficiency, agility, visibility and collaboration with Oracle BPM and WebCenter. The BDD demonstration uses a case study-based approach to highlight a business problem at a fictional company, Avitek Corporation, and uses Oracle BPM and Oracle WebCenter to solve the business problem. This holistic approach has specifically been used to appeal to a non-technical business analyst user. This demo is NOT focused on product features, but aims to guide users through a complete BPM lifecycle. The scenario is based on improving a simple order process (scenario details are in the demo script). Avitek Corporation is sufferinng from a manual email-driven ordering process. Sales reps don’t know where the customer orders are stuck (no visibility) and finance users are unable to manually approve every order (no automation). There are several areas where this process can be improved with Business Process Management technology. This demo shows how improving following areas will ignificantly help resolve the business problems Avitek Corporation is facing. Areas for improvement include: Utilizing BPM for process management, rather than an unregulated, email-based process. Utilizing automated services, rather than requiring a human to key into a system. For example, Finance checking the customer’s credit rating is something that could be automated. Centralizing business rules that can be integrated into a business process, rather than requiring a human to process them. For example, Finance must determine when orders can be automatically approved. Provide insight and visibility into the process.
