• Does placing Google Analytics code in an external file affect statistics?

  I'm working with an outside software vendor to add Google Analytics code to their web app, so that we can track its usage. Their developer suggested that we place the code in an external ".js" file, and he could include that in the layout of his application. The StackOverflow question "Google Analytics: External .js file covers the technical aspect, so apparently tracking is possible via an external file. However, I'm not quite satisfied that this won't have negative implications. Does including the tracking code as an external file affect the statistics collected by Google?

• Online Password Security Tactics

  Recently two more large databases were attacked and compromised, one at the popular Gawker Media sites and the other at McDonald’s. Every time this kind of thing happens (which is FAR too often) it should remind the technical professional to ensure that they secure their systems correctly. If you write software that stores passwords, it should be heavily encrypted, and not human-readable in any storage. I advocate a different store for the login and password, so that if one is compromised, the other is not. I also advocate that you set a bit flag when a user changes their password, and send out a reminder to change passwords if that bit isn’t changed every three or six months.    But this post is about the *other* side – what to do to secure your own passwords, especially those you use online, either in a cloud service or at a provider. While you’re not in control of these breaches, there are some things you can do to help protect yourself. Most of these are obvious, but they contain a few little twists that make the process easier.   Use Complex Passwords This is easily stated, and probably one of the most un-heeded piece of advice. There are three main concepts here: ·         Don’t use a dictionary-based word ·         Use mixed case ·         Use punctuation, special characters and so on   So this: password Isn’t nearly as safe as this: P@ssw03d   Of course, this only helps if the site that stores your password encrypts it. Gawker does, so theoretically if you had the second password you’re in better shape, at least, than the first. Dictionary words are quickly broken, regardless of the encryption, so the more unusual characters you use, and the farther away from the dictionary words you get, the better.   Of course, this doesn’t help, not even a little, if the site stores the passwords in clear text, or the key to their encryption is broken. In that case…   Use a Different Password at Every Site What? I have hundreds of sites! Are you kidding me? Nope – I’m not. If you use the same password at every site, when a site gets attacked, the attacker will store your name and password value for attacks at other sites. So the only safe thing to do is to use different names or passwords (or both) at each site. Of course, most sites use your e-mail as a username, so you’re kind of hosed there. So even though you have hundreds of sites you visit, you need to have at least a different password at each site.   But it’s easier than you think – if you use an algorithm.   What I’m describing is to pick a “root” password, and then modify that based on the site or purpose. That way, if the site is compromised, you can still use that root password for the other sites.   Let’s take that second password: P@ssw03d   And now you can append, prepend or intersperse that password with other characters to make it unique to the site. That way you can easily remember the root password, but make it unique to the site. For instance, perhaps you read a lot of information on Gawker – how about these:   P@ssw03dRead ReadP@ssw03d PR@esasdw03d   If you have lots of sites, tracking even this can be difficult, so I recommend you use password software such as Password Safe or some other tool to have a secure database of your passwords at each site. DO NOT store this on the web. DO NOT use an Office document (Microsoft or otherwise) that is “encrypted” – the encryption office automation packages use is very trivial, and easily broken. A quick web search for tools to do that should show you how bad a choice this is.   Change Your Password on a Schedule I know. It’s a real pain. And it doesn’t seem worth it…until your account gets hacked. A quick note here – whenever a site gets hacked (and I find out about it) I change the password at that site immediately (or quit doing business with them) and then change the root password on every site, as quickly as I can.   If you follow the tip above, it’s not as hard. Just add another number, year, month, day, something like that into the mix. It’s not unlike making a Primary Key in an RDBMS.   P@ssw03dRead10242010   Change the site, and then update your password database. • MySQL fails to start after upgrade to 12.04?

  I'm a newbie on MySQL ground so bear with me. I've just finished upgrading 11.10 to 12.04. Everything seemed to work without any hiccups and all my software and settings are working fine. Apart from MySQL. When I try: sudo start mysql I receive an error: start: Job failed to start Where can I possibly diagnose what the problem is? And (hopefully) - how to sort it out? (I disabled automatic start following advice here if that is of some importance) Update 1: Both outputs of: cat /var/log/mysql.err cat /var/log/mysql.log are empty. Output of dmesg | grep mysql: [ 1401.785141] type=1400 audit(1335619832.181:25): apparmor="STATUS" operation="profile_replace" name="/usr/sbin/mysqld" pid=16165 comm="apparmor_parser" [ 1401.791089] init: Failed to spawn mysql main process: unable to execute: No such file or directory Update 2: As indicated by AWinter below - it seemed that MySQL disappeared automagically after upgrade and had to be reinstalled.

• How will Quantum computing affect us?

  I am interested in quantum computing, but have not studied it in depth. Things like Shor's algorithm intrigue me. My question is: If quantum computing took off in a big way (i.e. functional quantum home computers were available) how would it affect us programmers and software developers? Would we have to learn how to make use of superposition and entanglement - would it change how we write algorithms? Would more mathematical programmers be required/would we need new skills? Would it change nothing at all from our perspective (i.e. would it be abstracted)? Your opinion is welcome.

• Analyst Firm Gives Oracle Highest Rating for Local Government CRM

  Gartner, Inc. has given Oracle a rating of "Strong Positive," the highest possible ranking, in its report "MarketScope for Local Government CRM Products." The report compares the offerings of nine providers of CRM commercial off-the-shelf software for local government agencies. Gartner notes that a provider receiving a Strong Positive ranking must be a "provider of strategic products, services or solutions..." and recommends that "customers continue with planned investments and potential customers consider this vendor a strong choice for strategic investments." • How to display reboot required user notification after installing a custom package in linux?

  After installing a custom package I should force a reboot of the system. I looked at couple of solutions to this use notify-send to display user notification followed by a reboot command, which did work as planned. But the user notification is only shown when I install the package from command line and not when I installed through Software Center. I came across some posts where they suggested adding the following to the postinst script [ -x /usr/share/update-notifier/notify-reboot-required ] && \ /usr/share/update-notifier/notify-reboot-required || true Tried including the above in the postinst script but all it does is updating the two files /var/run/reboot-required.pkgs and /var/run/reboot-required with restart information. It neither displayed user-notification nor rebooted the system after package is installed. Is there a way to display reboot required user notification in Ubuntu/Fedora/Open SUSE ?

• Complexity of a web application

  I am currently writing my Master's Thesis on maintainability of a web application. I found some methods like the "Maintainability Index" by Coleman et.al. or the "Software Maintainability Index" by Muthanna et.al. For both of them one needs to calculate the cyclomatic complexity. So my question is: Is it possible to measure the cyclomatic complexity of a web application? In my opinion there are three parts to a web application: Server code (PHP, C#, Python, Perl, etc.) Client code (JavaScript) HTML (links and forms as operators, GET-parameters and form fields as operands!?) What do you think? Is there another point of view on the complexity of web application? Did I miss something?

• Apple Aluminum Keyboard Via Bluetooth - Fn Key Problem

  I'm connecting an Apple Bluetooth Aluminum keyboard (this one) to my Lubuntu setup using the blueman applet. The keyboard types fine, but I would like to use its fn key to change screen brightness changing, page-up (fn+ctrl+down), page-down (fn+ctrl+up), et cetera. Right now the fn key doesn't seem to work. When I use xev, I don't see anything happen when I press fn. Does the keyboard not send this to the computer at all? Do I need to configure blueman's "Input Service" setting to make this an Apple (rather than a generic) keyboard? (It's not obvious how to do this.) Is xev just not showing the fn key? Where in this stack of software do I need to make a change to achieve the desired behaviour? Thanks!

• Activity log manager is not preventing Zeitgeist from logging files

  I am running Gnome Shell and I do not like Zeitgeist indexing all my files. This makes the search in dash very slow. I do not want the dash to search recent files, so I installed activity log manager to prevent zeitgeist's logging activity. I configured the log manager as below. But even after adding every folder, the files keep appearing in the dash under Recent Items. Is there any other software or tweak which will instruct zeitgeist to search only applications installed in my system and not my recent files.

But during code reviews if instead of functionality of the code the only complain one hears is about formatting/spacing and similar trivial things, when there are far better things to discuss (Among other things I have noticed the sometimes during the so called "reviews" suggestions are made that implementation needs a re-write just because it doesnt use the most happening technology/buzzword) How do fellow programmers deal with such scenarios? or is this just a one off? • Problem opening SFX archive file(.exe) using the archive manager

  I have installed both rar and unrar using apt-install but I am still not able to use archive manager for opening the archive file.. I have also tried installing p7zip(p7zip-full and p7zip) but no improvements... However, when I use command-line for extracting the files from the archive using unrar or rar the command executes successfully... Is there any other open source software I should install for viewing the contents of the SFX archive or what else should I install to view the same in the archive manager.. Thanks in advance...

• Computer SOMETIMES recognizes when headphones are plugged in.

  Whenever I plug my headphones into my computer's front headphone jack, I get a weird situation. Sometimes, the computer will recognize the headphones and work properly. But other times, the computer will play sound through both the headphones and my monitor's speaker. When this happens, the sound section of the system settings does not list the headphones. I can fix the issue temporarily by wiggling the headphone port, but if it gets wiggled the wrong way again, then the issue returns. My PC's case is a Rosewill Challenger. I have tried multiple headphones and the same issue is there. I suspect that this might be a hardware related issue, but if there is any way to fix it with software, that would be helpful.
