• using Excel VBA, given the daily price of 50 stocks, choose 10 stocks such that they have the minumu

  The high-level goal is to choose 10 stocks that have the lowest correlation among one another, out of a pool of 50, so that I can have a well-diversified portfolio. I have managed to write some VBA macro to download the past 3 years of daily price data from Yahoo finance, and then compute the 50x50 correlation matrix (using the Correl function), using the daily close as the data. What I have tried so far is just some local-maximum heuristic: - For the two stocks that have the highest correlation with each other, remove one of them. Between the two, remove the one that has the higher average correlation with all the other stocks. - When I remove a stock from the pool, I just delete the correponding row and column, to give a smaller matrix. - Repeat until I have just 10 stocks remaining (a 10x10 matrix). I was wondering if there is some algorithm that already solves such a problem and gives the optimum solution?

  Hi, I'm porting an application with EJBs 2.1 from Weblogic9 to JBoss AS5. I have made some of the changes like adding jboss.xml descriptors to EJBs and fixing application.xml of the EAR, but there are still problems when deploying the EAR. • OpenID Authentication 2.0 in Joomla 1.0.x

  Is there any easy way to bring OpenID authentication into a Joomla 1.0.x website? I am particularly interested in Google authentication (so I'll want OAuth &/or OpenID Attribute Exchange as well later), but for now just authentication will work. I know Joomla 1.5.x supports OpenID natively but I have to stick with 1.0.x for now. Any ideas? There are some traces of com_openid component on the net but I cannot find anything to look at.. EDIT I managed to find a J-OpenID component, gonna give it a try.

  Hello, As RESTful web services is url based and is not a object, we can't call methods on it. I have a simple web service with only one method in it with is @GET. I saw one screencast and it used some javascript library to consume the web service. But, how do i use it with my JSF project? I can't even inject it like a normal web service. Please help. I am new to REST. Can i not consume it in my managed bean? If the only way to consume the webservice is through javascript, can anybody here give me details of how to consume it through JQuery?   Dear all, I am tasked with a project that requires me to retreieve a specific file from a folder where I can only get an X and Y on the screen. While in XP I managed to use the fact that windows explorer is in essence a list view, and used the WM_HITTEST message to obtain information about the file, in Windows 7, this is not the case. To solve this problem, I am using UI Automation, which is a great tool for such things, only problem is that in the case, the windows handle I am looking at belongs to the desktop, and the desktop might have several files with the same name but with different extensions (and windows is configured to "hide extensions of known file types") UI automation does not return the extension back to me. I have tried many things, but I cannot find any robust solution which would give me 100% success. Has anyone tried this? successfully? Would appreciate any pointers. Many thanks,

  Hi, I know its unlikely but I was wondering if there is any way to get the comments (i.e. the bits after the ''') of a class or property..? I have managed to get a list of properties of a class using the PropertyInfo class but I cant find a way to get the comments / description.. I need it for a guide I am writing for the administrators of my site - it would be great if it could automatically update if new properties are added, so there is no need to worry about updating it in the future too much. • UITabBarController's 'More' navigation controller disappears under UINavigationController

  I am using a UITabBarController as well as a UINavigationController on my app. In my UITabBarController I am using more than 5 items so I automatically get the 'More' item. I've managed to add a saving procedure so the order of those items will be kept in case somebody changes the order etc. With 'More' active I get the More navigation controller with the 'Edit' item positioned under my UINavigationController. Both navigation controller are visible. When I click on 'Edit though the More navigation controller disappears and seem to be hiding under my UINavigationController and therefore I can't see/use the 'Done' function to save my new order What did I miss? • Client side html markdown conversion

  Hello, I've been trying to create a client side editor which allows the end user to create content in html or markdown. The user has two tabs for switching between the two. I managed to find some javascript that converts markdown to html, so if a user has been writing markdown and switches to the html tab, the html equivilant is shown. I haven't been able to find a javascript that converts html to markdown, only a python script. The python script is obviously server side. The tabs are just hyperlinks with script in there. Is there any way I can convert the markdown html when the user clicks the tab? The system has been created in python/django for reference Thanks

• Global Handler in IIS7 (Classic Mode) gives "Failed to Execute" error

  I have made a custom handler called MyIndexHandler and I want it to handle *.index requests, now as I want this handler to be executed by any website, I installed my handler with following two steps in IIS manager. Add MyIndexHandler.dll in GAC Add Managed Module for *.index, the drop down in IIS displays my index handler correctly so it means it did find it correctly from the GAC. I added Script map for aspnet_isapi.dll for *.index (this is required for classic mode) Now in any of my website if I try xyz.index, my handler does not get called and it returns "Failed to execute URL", now this only happens when IIS is unable to find the mapped handler, but I already have defined mapped handler at IIS level and when i try to add entry in web.config manually for this handler, it tells me you can not define multiple handler, it means that IIS finds my handler, mapping but for some reason it does not execute it.

• How to create a web framework in C# without ASPX?

  I've managed to get a C# asp page running under ubuntu/apache/mono, but I don't want to write my framework in these ASP pages, I want to use straight C# and then I'll use a templating language for my views. But I don't know where to begin? C# is a compiled language, so... how would I do this? Would I compile everything and then have apache hook into the (single) executable and pass in the the request URL? Could I request specific .cs pages and then have apache tell it to compile and then "display" it only if it's been updated? Can the "view" files be compiled individually to avoid having to recompile everything every time there's a change? Is there some "base" I can work from, or am I going to have to reinvent accessing GET and POST variables (by reading header info) and all sorts of other stuff we take for granted in languages like PHP?

• Override tooltip text for Titlebar buttons (Close, Maximize, Minimize, Help)

  I have been trying without luck to change the text of the tooltip that appears for the buttons on the main title bar of a form. In a nutshell, we have harnessed the 'Help' button for Windows Forms to have some other purpose. This is working fine. The issue is that when hovering the mouse over that button, a 'Help' tooltip appears, which doesn't make any sense for the application. Ideally, there would be some way to change the text of that tooltip for my application; however, at this point I would be satisfied just finding a way to disable the tooltips altogether. I know that you can disable the tooltips for the entire OS by modifying the 'UserPreferencesMask' key in regedit, but I would really like a way to have this only affect my application. Again, ideally there would be some way to do this with managed code, but I would not be opposed to linking into the Windows API or the like. Thanks for any suggestions for resolving this issue!

I've been using Rachota TimeTracker which allows me to create reports (in html format) http://rachota.sourceforge.net/en/demo.html I've just started using mylyn (our company uses Embarcadero JBuilder which is is based on Eclipse), but I don't see anywhere in the Eclipse or Embarcadero docs about reporting capabilities. Is it possible? It was design only for use with ie6 but now we need make it also run well on new client: ie8,ie7 on win7. I understand the most difference is the client: DOM and CSS.   Problem I have a YQL query result that I'm trying to get converted and sort into a clean XML file. Background Being the pains that they are, information from the World Cup isn't freely available in an easy to reuse format. So, after a bit of finessing with YQL I have managed to liberate the required table rows which contain the data I'm after. The YQL query can be viewed at: http://query.yahooapis.com/v1/public/yql/ravingbeefsteak/worldcup2010groupliberator?diagnostics=true I'd like to now convert this information into XML, and being an absolute n00b I don't know where to start or what to look for. • Trying to integrate Jeditable+MarkItUp and Thickbox/Lightbox

  I've managed to successfully integrate MarkItUp with Jeditable based on the instructions on those two sites. What I would really like to do, however, is to have the Jeditable/MarkItUp editing window appear in a Thickbox or Lightbox overlay. So far my attempts to do this have not been successful.   I'm using WCF through Spring.net WCF integration link text This works relatively fine, however it seems that WCF and Spring get in each other's way when instantiating client channels. This means that only a single client channel is created for a service and therefore the clients get a timeout after the configured timeout is expired since the same client channel has been open since it was instantiated by Spring. To make the matters worst, once a channel goes to a fault state, it affect all users of that service since spring doesn't create a new channel for each user. Has anyone managed to use WCF and Spring.net work together without these issues?

Do you have any idea?

• Is there a way to make sure a background process spawned by my program is killed when my process ter

  Basically the child process runs indefinitely until killed in the background, and I want to clean it up when my program terminates for any reason, i.e. via the Taskmanager. Currently I have a while (Process.GetProcessesByName("ParentProcess").Count() 0) loop and exit if the parent process isn't running, but it seems pretty brittle, and if I wanted it to work under debugger in Visual Studio I'd have to add "ParentProcess.vshost" or something. Is there any way to make sure that the child process end without requiring the child process to know about the parent process? I'd prefer a solution in managed code, but if there isn't one I can PInvoke. Edit: Passing the PID seems like a more robust solution, but for curiosity's sake, what if the child process was not my code but some exe that I have no control over? Is there a way to safeguard against possibly creating orphaned child processes?

  I need a fast and reliable way to map an absolute or relative local path (say ./images/Mafalda.jpg) to it's corresponding absolute URL, so far I've managed to come up with this: function Path($path) { if (file_exists($path) === true) { return rtrim(str_replace('\\', '/', realpath($path)), '/') . '://' . $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'], $path); } return false; } URL('./images/Mafalda.jpg'); // http://domain.com/images/Mafalda.jpg Seems to be working as expected, but since this is a critical feature to my app I want to ask if anyone can spot any problem that I might have missed and optimizations are also welcome since I'm going to use this function several times per each request.
