  • Three Master Data Management Deployment Tips

    MDM is all about data quality and data governance. We now know that improved data quality raises all operational and analytical boats. But it's not just about deploying data quality tools. It's about deploying data quality tools within and across the IT landscape - from a thousand points of data entry to a single version of the truth. Here are three tips to deploying MDM across your applications and enterprise.   #1: Identify a tactical, high-value business problem where MDM can materially help. §  Support a customer acquisition and retention program with a 'customer' master data solution. §  Accelerate new products and services to market with a 'product' master data solution. §  Reduce supplier exceptions or support spend control initiatives with a 'supplier' master data solution. §  Support new store (branch, campus, restaurant, hospital, office, well head) location analysis with a 'site' master data solution. §  Fix long standing Chart of Accounts and Cost Center problems with a 'financial' master data solution. §  Support M&A activity, application upgrades, an SOA initiative, a cloud computing program, or a new business intelligence deployment by implementing a mix of master data solutions.   #2: Incrementally expand to a full information architecture. Quite often, the measurable return on interest from tactical MDM initiatives will fund future deployments. Over time, the MDM solution expands into its full architecture to cover the entire IT landscape. Operations and analytics are united, IT flexibility is restored, and sustainable competitive advantage is achieved.   #3: Bring business into every MDM deployment. To be successful, MDM must work hand in hand with data governance. In fact, Oracle MDM incorporates data governance tools for business users. IT can insure data quality, but only after the business side has defined what quality means. The business establishes the rules for governing the master data, and then IT enforces the rules via the MDM applications. Without this business/IT collaboration, MDM initiatives seldom achieve their full potential.   It is not very often that a technology comes along that can measurably assist organizations across a wide variety of top IT initiatives. Reducing costs, increasing flexibility, getting more out of existing assets, and aligning business and IT are not easy tasks for any CIO. But with MDM, success is achievable.   • Retail in New York - a walk down 5th Avenue

    It's the week of the NRF Big Show and all eyes in the retail industry are on New York. The Big Apple is famous for Big Retail -with a proliferation of incredibly iconic stores. The environment is exciting and familiar even to people visiting this small island for the first time. Most of us have travelled down Fifth Avenue watching movies and TV even if we have never set foot on American soil. I find it one of the most exciting retail cities in the world and I am thrilled this year to be here with so many of Oracle's International retail customers who are joining us for the Retail Exchange. The Oracle program brings retailers from all over the planet together to share ideas and be inspired by New York retail and the NRF event. The show celebrates its 100th year in 2011 and New York itself has been recognized globally as the capital of innovative retail for just as long.  Fifth Avenue is where many global brands have placed their flagship stores, and businesses are in constant competition to set themselves apart from their competitors - both in the store and from the street.  These flag ship retail destinations present what today's customers are finding most exciting and delightful about retail. For the tourist market, they may only visit these stores once, but the impression that a trip to a flagship store leaves with a customer can last a lifetime.  One of the stores that is currently turning heads on Fifth Avenue is Hollister, sister brand to Abercrombie and Fitch, which has filled its shop front with a massive live video (and audio) feed of surfers on the beach in California.  To complete the effect, they also have troughs of water in front of the video screens to bring the sea to the street.  And this isn't the only kind of surfing that retailers are considering today and multi-channel retail is a hot topic that all of the retailers joining the Retail Exchange are considering.   The rest of the world looks to the brands along Fifth Avenue for inspiration - how they take advantage of new opportunities, how they set themselves apart from their competitors and how they keep their products fresh and desirable. With these inspiring pioneers in New York, it's little wonder that NRF's Big Show is so popular, and that New York is viewed as one of the retail capitals of the world.   • Who Are the BI Users in Your Neighborhood?

    By Brian Dayton on March 19, 2010 10:52 PM Forrester's Boris Evelson recently wrote a blog titled "Who are the BI Personas?" that I enjoyed for a number of reasons. It's a quick read, easy to grasp and (refreshingly) focuses on the users of technology VS the technology. As Evelson admits, he meant to keep the reference chart at a high-level because there are too many different permutations and additional sub-categories to make such a chart useful. For me, I wouldn't head into the technical permutations but more the contextual use of BI and the issues that users experience. My thoughts brought up more questions than answers such as: Context: - HOW: With the exception of the "Power User" persona--likely some sort of business or operations analyst? - WHEN: Are they using the information to make real-time decisions on the front lines (a customer service manager or shipping/logistics VP) or are they using this information for cumulative analysis and business planning? Or both? - WHERE: What areas of the business are more or less likely to rely on BI across an organization? Human Resources, Operations, Facilities, Finance--- and why are some more prone to use data-driven analysis than others? Issues: - DELAYS & DRAG ON IT?: One of the persona characteristics Evelson calls out is a reliance on IT. Every persona except for the "Power User" has a heavy reliance on IT for support. What business issues or delays does that cause to users? What is the drag on IT resources who could potentially be creating instead of reporting? - HOW MANY CLICKS: If BI is being used within the context of a transaction (sales manager looking for upsell opportunities as an example) is that person getting the information within the context of that action or transaction? Or are they minimizing screens, logging into another application or reporting tool, running queries, etc.? Who are the BI Users in your neighborhood or line of business? Do Evelson's personas resonate--and do the tools that he calls out (he refers to it as "BI Style") resonate with what your personas have or need? Finally, I'm very interested if BI use is viewed as a bolt-on...or an integrated part of your daily enterprise processes?

  • Multiple Exception Handlers for one exception type

    I am using Enterprose Library 4.1. I have created a custom exception handler called CustomHandler. What I want is that based on a certain condition one of the handlers should handle the exception. Any ideas how that can be done? Is there a way to call the other handler from inside the HandleException method of the custom handler based on some condition?

  • sort django queryset by latest instance of a subset of related model

    I have an Order model and order_event model. Each order_event has a foreignkey to order. so from an order instance i can get: myorder.order_event_set. I want to get a list of all orders but i want them to be sorted by the date of the last event. A statement like this works to sort by the latest event date: queryset = Order.objects.all().annotate(latest_event_date=Max('order_event__event_datetime')).order_by('latest_event_date') However, what I really need is a list of all orders sorted by latest date of A SUBSET OF EVENTS. For example my events are categorized into "scheduling", "processing", etc. So I should be able to get a list of all orders sorted by the latest scheduling event. This django doc (https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/topics/db/aggregation/#filter-and-exclude) shows how I can get the latest schedule event using a filter but this excludes orders without a scheduling event. I thought I could combine the filtered queryset with a queryset that includes back those orders that are missing a scheduling event...but I'm not quite sure how to do this. I saw answers related to using python list but it would be much more useful to have a proper django queryset (ie for a view with pagination, etc.)

Is there a simple way to disable all logging for now? Removing the logging is problematic as it's used in the underlying libraries. I have tried setting all switchValue="All" to "Off" but it still throws the exception even though nothing should be logged

  • StringLengthValidator - localization not working

    I am validating input to my ASP.NET application using StringLengthValidators, and using the ValidationSummary control to display the error messages. To localize the application, the StringLengthValidators have the MessageTemplateResourceName and MessageTemplateResourceType attributes set. The first time the validator runs, it picks up the correct error message based on the current culture setting. If I change the language setting while running the app, the next time the validator runs, the ValidationSummary it still displays the error message for the old culture. The text for all other controls is being updated correctly. Any ideas, folks?

  • Is this the correct way of speaking to a "Content Manager" Class?

    I am creating a silverlight site. I am currently breaking out my ideas into pieces of functionality. One of the idea's I have is the concept of a content manager. This is essentially a UI control with 4 regions. Top, Bottom, Right & Left. I also have a collection of objects that are considered "Menu Items". These are controls that function as a way to navigate around, similar to links. The idea I have is to implement an IMenuItem interface. Among the standard pieces of information (Text, PageReference, etc) I was also going to hold a reference to the content manager. My idea behind this thinking is that I can pass the PageReference to a property on the ContentManager and then call a method which knows how to update the content manager accordingly. Is this the best way of implementing this or is their some sort of pattern for it?

  • Apache/passenger/ree doesn't interpret .rb files

    I'm trying to get apache + passenger + ree to work. I think I did everything (except for setting up rails env - for now I wanna run just pure ruby) described here: http://rvm.beginrescueend.com/integration/passenger/ But when I try to go to localhost/test.rb it doesn't interpret that file and just download it.   • Enteprise Library Exception Handling for WCF Fault Contracts - CLIENT SIDE

    I have a Windows Service which communicates with WCF services. The WCF services are all fault shielded and generate custom UserFaultContracts and ServiceFaultContracts. No problems there. In the Windows Service I am using EntLib for exception handling and logging. I do not want to try catch for faults try { } catch (FaultException<UserFaultContract>) { } I want to use EntLib try { } catch (Exception ex) { var rethrow = ExceptionPolicy.HandleException(ex, "Transaction Policy"); if (rethrow) throw; } This also works, however, in my Tranasaction Policy I want to Log the details of the UserFaultContract. This is where I am unglued. And I hate becoming unglued. The fault is captured and logged...but I can't get the details of the fault.   • Android delivering different Cell IDs (Neighboring Cell Info)

    Hello. Using an Android Dev Phone 2, I'm using the GsmCellLocation.getCid() method to get the Cell ID on my network. When I run the command and get all the CellIDs for the NeighboringCellInfo I get this values: 597195726 597185722 597195718 597110191 597101100 597175726 I'm running this using the SDK 1.6. The problem is that when I run the Engineering Mode on a GSM modem that I have, running a command to obtain the Neighboring Cell IDs, I get this values: 34253 0 34223 34262 34181 0 What is the difference here? In what format is Android delivering the Cell IDs? I tried doing a "cell.getCid() & 0xffff" but now I'm getting the values: 21690 31686 37068 11695 11694 31694 Which are still different from the one that the GSM Modem is delivering with the Engineering Mode. Obviously I tried this on at the same time, same location. I'm trying to get the same Cell IDs that the external GSM modem I using is delivering Please provide any help Thanks in advance!

One of the points my client brought up (justifiably so!) is whether there are extant examples of using the rules engine for a business rules engine without workflow. My question, of course is: Has anyone used the WF Rules engine sans workflow in a production application before, and what were your experiences?

  • Clob as param for PL/SQL Java Stored Procedure

    I have a java stored procedure that takes in a clob representing a chunk of javascript and mins it. The structure of the function calling the JSP is as follows: function MIN_JS(pcl_js in clob) return clob as language java name 'JSMin.min(oracle.sql.CLOB) return oracle.sql.CLOB'; In the actual JSP, I have the following: import oracle.sql.CLOB; public class JSMin { ... public static min(CLOB js) { ... } The problem I'm having is that whenever I pass a clob to JS_MIN, it is always interpreted as null inside the JSP. I've checked the clob before calling JS_MIN annd it definitely has contents. Any ideas as to what I'm missing? Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Speed Difference between native OLE DB and ADO.NET

    I'm looking for suggestions as well as any benchmarks or observations people have. We are looking to rewrite our data access layer and are trying to decide between native C++ OLEDB or ADO.NET for connecting with databases. Currently we are specifically targeting Oracle which would mean we would use the Oracle OLE DB provider and the ODP.NET. Requirements: 1. All applications will be in managed code so using native C++ OLEDB would require C++/CLI to work (no PInvoke way to slow). 2. Application must work with multiple databases in the future, currently just targeting Oracle specifically. Question: 1. Would it be more performant to use ADO.NET to accomplish this or use native C++ OLE DB wrapped in a Managed C++ interface for managed code to access? Any ideas, or help or places to look on the web would be greatly appreciated.

  • Weird problems with ruby servers on Ubuntu 9.10

    So I'm using Ubuntu 9.10, trying to setup and deploy my app, but for some reason, whenever I try and boot up thin, it tells me it can't find rails, script/console, however, works fine. Heck, even script/server works fine as long as I don't try and daemonize it, then it just fails without any errors. Any ideas on what the hell is going on? I'm using rvm with the default ubuntu ruby as my system ruby. I have set REE as the default ruby though. This was still happening back when I had only REE installed via their installer script too.

  • How to provide custom connection string for Logging Application Block instead of using the one in .c

    I'm modifying an existing winforms application to use the Logging Application Block. For historical reasons this app gets its main database connection string from the registry, and I'd like the Logging Application Block to use the same details for logging to the database. How can I do this? The approaches i can think of are: 1) Create a new TraceListener and implement the same sort of functionality as in FormattedDatabaseTraceListener. If I take this approach, should I inherit from CustomTraceListener, and if so how do I pass an attribute of the formatter to use? 2) Create a new ConfigurationSource that provides different details when asked for the database connection. All other requests would be passed through to a FileConfigurationSource, but when asked for the database connection details the object would read the appropriate bits from the registry instead. but it's not obvious which is more appropriate, or how to go about doing it. Any suggestions? I'm using EntLib 3.1. thanks, -Rory

    Does anyone have any good stories of these kinds of organizations being open to using open source dependencies (and also tools). Many staff I've encountered have little or no exposure to open source/systems and open source is treated with great suspicion. Some reasons given for this are lack of support and robustness, which is ironic given the number of end-of-life unsupported vendor products that are in production. I'm also interested in any success stories where you've seen open source go into orgs like this and have a real benefit!
