  • Listing SQL Columns

    When I am writing up stored procedures in SSMS sometimes I need to know what column types are used in a table. For instance I will know the table name but I might not remember exactly the length of a varchar column or if a column stored the data as an integer or varchar. And I may not want to scroll through all the tables in Object Explorer to find the one I want. A lot of times it is easier if I can just write a quick query to pull up the information I need. The syntax to do something like this is pretty easy. SELECT COLUMN_NAME, DATA_TYPE, CHARACTER_MAXIMUM_LENGTH FROM yourdbname.information_schema.columns WHERE TABLE_NAME = ‘yourtablename’ After running that you will get a listing in the Results pane just like any other query with the column name, data type and length (if any).   • What is the correct pattern to use in this case?

    I'm sure this scenario has arisen before, and I want to know what experience has taught to be the best solution. I have a number of classes that are all of a kind. Say all the objects are "Content". They may be "Article", or "Book" for example. The reason I want the "Content" abstraction is because I want to define a number of behaviours for all "Content" objects and not have to build a new DB Table and 10 classes of essentially the same code for each type of "Content". For example, to attach a "Tag" or a "Premise" to a content object would be much nicer if, say, I just had two columns one for ContentID and one for TagID. A solution I've played around with is to have a Content table with a unique ID, and then to have foreign key references on all the other tables (Book, Article, etc). This has actually proven quite solid, but I'm just not sure about it. Do you know how to call this described pattern?

    I have a database table that contains id, filename, userId id is unique identifier filename should also be unique table may contain 10000 records When a user uploads a file it should be entered in database with given rules: If there is no record with same filename, it should be added as it is (Ex. foobar.pdf) If there is record with same filename, it should be added as uploadedName(2).ext (foobar(2).pdf) If there are n records with same base filename (foobar), it should be added as uploadedName(n+1).ext (foobar(20).pdf) Now if foobar(2).pdf is uploaded, it should be added as foobar(2)(2).pdf & so on This pattern needs to be followed because the file is already being uploaded at client side using ajax before sending the details to server and the file hosting service follows the above rules to name the files. My solution: maintain a file that contains all the names and the number of times it has occurred. if a filename that exists in file is entered, increase occurrence count and new name is generated, else add to it to file if the new name generated is in database, add it to file and generate new name

  • How do you pass a date value to BIRT report via querystring

    Hi, I have made a static html page (called start.jsp) containing a form where the user select 2 date ranges and this form has date pickers for those text boxes. When the user submits the form, it should take them to the BIRT report that I have designed. It SHOULD pass the 2 parameters that my report needs (start date and end date). Here is the querystring that gets appended to the URL birt-viewer/run__report=Business_Activity_Monitoring.rptdesign &FilterStartDate=2000-01-01&FilterEndDate=2009-01-01 I get an invalid date error: org.eclipse.birt.report.exception.ViewerValidationException: The parameter "FilterStartDate" is invalid. The value "06-08-2010" is invalid with the type "dateTime". How is it that if I remove the querystring completely, then BIRT will prompt me to enter the start date and end date (screenshot attached). I enter the exact same data that the form tries to send and it works!? This proves that my date string is correctly formatted but yet it will not accept them if they are sent to the BIRT report via the querystring? Seems like it has a problem with the fact that its a string in the first place. I have correctly set up these report parameters in my BIRT report. I have also tried changing them by specifying the "Format as" value to be a "custom" YYYY-MM-dd but this didnt work. Is it even possible to send date parameters to a birt report via querystring? Im guessing the solution will involve converting these strings to dates within the birt report's "script" tab. but I dont know how to access querystring variables from here or how to set report parameter variables.   • Complex SQL query help on aggregating values for nested subquery

    Hi! I have people, companies, employees, events and event kinds. I'm making a report/followup sheet where people, companies and employees are the rows, and the columns are event kinds. Event kinds are simple values describing: "Promised Donation", "Received Donation", "Phoned", "Followed up" and such. Event kinds are ordered: CREATE TABLE event_kinds ( id, name, position); Events hold the actual reference to the event: CREATE TABLE events ( id, person_id, company_id, referrer_id, event_kind_id, created_at); referrer_id is another reference to people. It is the person which sent the information/tip along, and is an optional field, although I sometimes want to filter on an event_kind that has a specific referrer, while I don't for other event kinds. Notice I don't have an employee ID reference. The reference exists, but is implied. I have application code to validate that person_id and company_id really reference an employee record. The other tables are pretty basic: CREATE TABLE people ( id, name); CREATE TABLE companies ( id, name); CREATE TABLE employees ( id, person_id, company_id); I'm trying to achieve the following report: Referrer Phoned Promised Donated Francois Feb 16th Feb 20th Mar 1st Apple (Steve Jobs) Steve Ballmer Mar 3rd IBM Bill Gates Mar 7th The first row is a people record, the 2nd is an employee, and the 3rd is a company. If I asked for referrer Bill Gates for Phoned event kinds, I'd only see the 3rd row, while asking for Steve and Phoned would return no rows. Right now, I do 3 queries, one for companies, one for people and a last one for employees. I want the event kind columns to be ordered, but I do that in application code and show it properly there. There should be an "easier" way to do it. One other filter criteria would be to filter on people/company names: WHERE LOWER(companies.name) LIKE '%apple%'. Note that I'm ordering by the dates of event_kind_9 here, and a secondary sort is by person/company name. To summarize: I want to paginate the result set, find the latest event for each cell, order the result set by the date of the latest event, and by company/person name, filter by referrer in some event kinds, but not others. For reference, I'm using PostgreSQL, from Ruby, ActiveRecord/Rails. The solution is pure SQL though.

  • Writing a Javascript library that is code-completion and code-inspection friendly

    I recently made my own Javascript library and I initially used the following pattern: var myLibrary = (function () { var someProp = "..."; function someFunc() { ... } function someFunc2() { ... } return { func: someFunc, fun2: someFunc2, prop: someProp; } }()); The problem with this is that I can't really use code completion because the IDE doesn't know about the properties that the function literal is returning (I'm using IntelliJ IDEA 9 by the way). I've looked at jQuery code and tried to do this: (function(window, undefined) { var myLibrary = (function () { var someProp = "..."; function someFunc() { ... } function someFunc2() { ... } return { func: someFunc, fun2: someFunc2, prop: someProp; } }()); window.myLibrary = myLibrary; }(window)); I tried this, but now I have a different problem. The IDE doesn't really pick up on myLibrary either. The way I'm solving the problem now is this way: var myLibrary = { func: function() { }, func2: function() { }, prop: "" }; myLibrary = (function () { var someProp = "..."; function someFunc() { ... } function someFunc2() { ... } return { func: someFunc, fun2: someFunc2, prop: someProp; } }()); But that seems kinda clunky, and I can't exactly figure out how jQuery is doing it. Another question I have is how to handle functions with arbitrary numbers of parameters. For example, jQuery.bind can take 2 or 3 parameters, and the IDE doesn't seem to complain. I tried to do the same thing with my library, where a function could take 0 arguments or 1 argument. However, the IDE complains and warns that the correct number of parameters aren't being sent in. How do I handle this?

  • jqGrid local data manipulation; problem with row ids when deleting and adding new rows

    I'm using jqGrid as a client side grid input, allowing the user to input multiple records before POSTing all the data back at once. I'm having a problem where if the user has added a few records (say 3 ) the id's for the records will be 1,2,3. if the user deletes record 2, you're left with 1 and 3 for the id of the records. When the user now adds a new records, jqGrid assigns that records the id 3 again since it just seems to count the total records and increments it by one for the new record. This causes problems when selecting rows as now the row id's are 1, 3 and 3. Does anyone know how to access the row ids of records as I could probably use the afterSubmit event and reassign the row id's increasing from 1. ( so after i delete row id 2, this will set the other row id's to 1 and 2) Any other suggestions to solve this problem? Thanks edit I've solved this with the following code for the delete navGrid button }).navGrid('#pager', {add:true, del:true, refresh:false, search:false}, { ... }, ##edit parameters { ... }, ##add parameters {reloadAfterSubmit:false, clearAfterAdd:false, afterComplete: function () { ## clear and readd the row data so the row ids are sequential var savedData= $("#inputgrid").jqGrid('getRowData'); $("#inputgrid").jqGrid('clearGridData'); $("#inputgrid").jqGrid('addRowData', 'rn', savedData); } } ##delete parameters ); Basically just saving the grid data and then re-adding it so that the rowids are sequential again. For some reason it causes the row numbers down the left side to go start from 2 instead of one. Edit this was solved by using the latest jqGrid code in GitHub (27th April 2010)

My Entity Framework already contains the object model for this table : I just want to generate the corresponding table using a command. (By the way, there is maybe a better way to do this.   • jQuery DataTables server side processing and ASP.Net

    I'm trying to use the server side functionality of the jQuery Datatables plugin with ASP.Net. The ajax request is returning valid JSON, but nothing is showing up in the table. I originally had problems with the data I was sending in the ajax request. I was getting a "Invalid JSON primative" error. I discovered that the data needs to be in a string instead of JSON serialized, as described in this post: http://encosia.com/2008/06/05/3-mistakes-to-avoid-when-using-jquery-with-aspnet-ajax/. I wasn't quite sure how to fix that, so I tried adding this in the ajax request: "data": "{'sEcho': '" + aoData.sEcho + "'}" If the aboves eventually works I'll add the other parameters later. Right now I'm just trying to get something to show up in my table. The returning JSON looks ok and validates, but the sEcho in the post is undefined, and I think thats why no data is being loaded into the table. So, what am I doing wrong? Am I even on the right track or am I being stupid? Does anyone ran into this before or have any suggestions?     We are in the process of migrating our ASP.NET MVC 1.0 web app to MVC 2.0 but we have run into a small snag. In our report creation wizard, it is possible leave the Title text box empty and have it be populated with a generic title (in the post action).     I'm using D2K9, Zeos 7Alpha, and Firebird 2.1 I had this working before I added the autoinc field. Although I'm not sure I was doing it 100% correctly. I don' know what order to do the SQL code, with the triggers, Generators, etc.. I've tried several combinations, I'm guessing I'm doing something wrong other than just that for this not to work. I figured out that I can create a QNetworkRequest, set all the parameters there and send it via QNetworkAccessManagers post method. But how can I add some URL-encoded parameters to the request? In the end I want to access the Eve API using Qt/C++.     I'm trying to paste the values from a textbox in form1 to textbox in form2. I did that, but while i upgraded my aplication it stopped to work.   • C# asp.net EF MVC postgresql error 23505: Duplicate key violates unique constraint

    EDIT: It was issue with database table - dropping and recreating table id column did the work. Problem solved. I'm trying to build web application, that is connected to postgresql database. Results are displaying in view with Kendo UI. When I'm trying to add new row (with Kendo UI 'Add new record' button), I get error 23505: 'Duplicate key violates unique constraint'. My guess is, that EF takes id to insert from the beginning, not the last one, because after 35 (it's number of rows in table) tries - and errors - adding works perfectly. Can someone help me to understand, what's wrong?     I have the following code that I need to migrate from VS 2003 (.Net 1.1) to VS 2008 (.Net 2+) but I get compilation error - System.Xml.Xsl.XslTransform' is obsolete: This class has been deprecated. I probably need to use System.Xml.Xsl.XslCompiledTransform instead. but I do not find the matching Load() and Transform() overload versions that I can use with all the parameters of my original code. in MSDN [How to: Migrate Your XslTransform Code] I only found some simpler cases. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa983475%28VS.80%29.aspx but in my code I see some remarks that hints that the added parameters were used to avoid exceptions, so I prefer to use these parameters.
