• Developing web app, question for mobile developers

  I'm going to develop a web app that I expect some people will also end up wanting to view on their phones. The UI will be fairly straightforward (no frames, just CSS/HTML). May have a bit of Flash, but not for the first version. My question is, for testing viewing of the web app on mobile devices what devices would you recommend that I test on (and thus, most likely, have to purchase)? Windows Mobile iPhone Android Other? or can I use emulators for any/all of these? Note that I'm not developing a platform (android, iPhone) specific app, just a web application that I expect will also be accessed from a mobile phone. I apologise if this seems like a niave/stupid question, but this hobby project is totally away from my commercial experience and I just don't know the answers to these questions, hence asking here. • Full stack framework for Java

  Hello everyone, I'm looking for a full stack framework (from persistency to view generation (CRUD)) for Java. I don't have experience with Rails style frameworks, like Grails, but I worked a lot with Hibernate, Struts, Spring ... I prefer a framework that let you naturally modify the business domain design with the less effort ( i.e. writing the sql querys to modify the tables and constrains, change the view pages, etc ... ). I was looking a bit about this topic, I saw Naked Objects for example but its development has stopped. So, I want to hear about your experience. Thanks in advance.

• Advantages of using WCF to work with Sharepoint Services WSS3.0?

  Hi folks, what is your opinion or better off your practical experience using WCF to work with WSS instead of SP web services? I am writing some custom library for our software to store and retrieve files from WSS document libraries using sharepoint web services. I am not entirely happy with the performance of the sp web services - a bit too slow in many cases. Now, microsoft claims a significant improvements in WCF over remoting and I am looking into a good way to use WCF for my file services. Any suggestions or ideas? • Premium Services - Ad blocker legal or illegal?

  Ok, maybe thats kind of a stupid question. But let's try to get an answer. I'm building a Desktop Solution for an existing web service. That web service is only available without ads when you pay for a premium account. Would it be illegal when I block this ads in my Desktop Application? When you use this web service over the browser, every user has the chance to block ads with adblocker addons. So why not block this stuff in my Desktop Application?

• Architecture for multiple web apps and databases.

  We used to have only one web app, but now we are breaking it down into multiple ones. Each one will be packaged as separate product (web app) Some have things in common some do not. It was originally coded with php and using Postgresql 8.4 and CodeIgniter as the framework. I am looking for some good suggestions on how I should set up multiple web apps. They all have their own somewhat unique data. Some data in the databases can be common to some apps but not all. All the apps will be on one server and will have some kind of API to manipulate data. I want it to be structured such that one User account can access any product they purchase. (kinda like google accounts) I do not know if its a good idea to have multiple database, or just to have one big one. eventually we will be using S3 for some videos and other images. Your thoughts and suggestions are much appreciated.

  It is written byte[][] getImagesForFields(java.lang.String[] fieldnames) Gets an array of images for the given fields. On the other hand, as long as I use the method in the web application project built on asp.net 2.o using c#; the provided web method declared above, returns sbyte; Have a look my code below; formClearanceService.openSession(imageServiceUser); formClearanceService.prepareInstance(formId); byte[][] fieldImagesList = formClearanceService.getImagesForFields(fieldNames); formClearanceService.closeSession(); thus I get the following error: Cannot implicitly convert type 'sbyte[]' to 'byte[][]' So now, 1- should I ask the web service provider what is going on? or 2- any other way that can use the sbyte as I was suppose to use byte[][] like following using: byte[] ssss = fieldImagesList [0]..

• Lazy loading? Better avoiding it?

  I just read about this design pattern: Lazy Load. And, since in the application i'm working on i have all the classes in one folder, i was wondering if this pattern could just make me avoiding the include() function for every class. I mean: It's nice to know that if i forgot to include a class, PHP, before falling into an error, trough an __autoload() function try to get it. But is it fine enough to just don't care about including classes and let PHP do it by your own every time? Or we should write __autoload() just in case it is needed?

• WPF MVVM - Correct way to consume a web service asynchronously

  I have implemented MVVM in my WPF application. I was wondering what is the correct way to consume a Web Service from WPF MVVM app. So far, I have created a DataAccess interface and a class that implements this interface. This would serve as a facade / proxy to the web service. The ViewModel gets a reference to this class as the constructor parameter so it can make any calls to get/set data, in this case it will be a Web service call. I would appreciate if you can guide me with some hints and / or direct me to some online resource.

  i just had this thought, and was wondering if it's possible to crawl the entire web (just like the big boys!) on a single dedicated server (like Core2Duo, 8gig ram, 750gb disk 100mbps) . I've come across a paper where this was done....but i cannot recall this paper's title. it was like about crawling the entire web on a single dedicated server using some statistical model. Anyways, imagine starting with just around 10,000 seed URLs, and doing exhaustive crawl.... is it possible ? I am in need of crawling the web but limited to a dedicated server. how can i do this, is there an open source solution out there already ? for example see this real time search engine. http://crawlrapidshare.com the results are exteremely good and freshly updated....how are they doing this ?

• Securing input of private / protected methods?

  Hello, normally, all sane developers are trying to secure input of all public methods (casting to proper types, validating, sanitizing etc.) My question is: are you in your code validating also parameters passed to protected / private methods? In my opinion it is not necessary, if you securize properly parameters of public methods and return values from outside (other classes, db, user input etc...). But I am constantly facing frameworks and apps (ie. prestashop to name one) where validation is often repeated in method call, in method body and once again for securize returned value - which, I think, is creating performace overhead and is also a sign of bad design.

  We are planning to create a new sub-site within our company's intranet site. The intranet is built on SharePoint 2007. My question is this: Suppose I want to add a 3rd-party weather web part to the home page of my new intranet site. Since the new site uses HTTPS, do I need to make sure to find an HTTPS-compliant web part? If I use a standard web part, will users get a "This page contains both secure and non-secure items" error message when they load the page? Thanks in advance!

Associated with any web page, i want to create notes that will be saved locally in a database, the notes will be reloaded automatically from that database the next time i visit the same page. Creating the note is easy, but i'm looking for how to link the notes to the web page url and how to keep aware of the active web page. Any idea? • Should I dive into ASP.NET MVC or start with ASP.NET Webforms?

  I plan to pick up Silverlight in the future. Possibility of going into Microsoft WPF. Currently learning Objective-C 2.0 w/ Cocoa. I already know Pros and Cons of ASP.NET MVC vs ASP.NET Webforms. What I want to know is what would be more "efficient" for me to learn given the circumstances above? By efficient I mean learning one design pattern once and then re-using it. Objective-C I believe uses MVC approach? What about Silverlight? WPF? So what do you think? Also as a side question is it true that ASP.NET Webforms is often used by freelancers/small companies and ASP.NET MVC in large enterprises?

• Session State Anti-Pattern

  I know the SOLID principles and other design patterns fairly well and have been programming for some time now - seeing many a bit of code throughout the years. Having said that, I'm having trouble coming up with a name to give the pattern, or lack thereof, to bits of code I've been dealing with at a current engagement. The application is an ASP.NET C# WebForms application, backed by a SQL Server/Mainframe backend (more mainframe than backend) and it's riddled with Session State properties being accessed/mutated from multiple pages/classes. Accessing/mutating global variables/application state was usually shunned upon while I was in school. Apparently the creators of this magnificent application didn't think it was such a bad idea. Question: Is there a name for such a pattern/anti-pattern that relies so heavily on Session State? I'd like to call the pig by its name ...

  I have a foreign key that has to refer primary keys of two different tables. Table 1: animal animal_ id (primary key) Table 2: bird bird_ id (primary key) Table 3: Pet_info pet_id, type ENUM ('bird', 'animal') foreign key (pet_ id) references animal(animal_id), bird(bird_id) So, I need to check for pet_id either from animal or bird table depending on the need. • I have to generate PL/SQL using Java. Most of the procedures are common. Only a few keeps changing.

  I have to generate PL-SQL code, with some common code(invariable) and a variable code. I don't want to use any external tools. Some ways that I can think: Can I go and maintain the common code in a template and with markers, where my java code will generate code in the markers and generate a new file. Maintain the common code in static constant String and then generate the whole code in StringBuffer and at last write to file. But, I am not at all satisfied with both the ideas. Can you please suggest any better ways of doing this or the use of any design patterns or anything? Thanks in Advance.

  I have been read a lot of articles to make a good design for my database so I can get the most recent updates for every single user by executing a - kind of - complex query then I send the data using ajax as a JSON to JS file that makes an appropriate edits for the records.   The question of why there are no friends in C# has been extensively discussed. I have the following design problems. I have a class that has only one public function AddOrder(Order ord). Clients are allowed to call only this function. All other logic must be hidden. Order class is listening to market events and must call other other function of TradingSystem ExecuteOrder, so I have to make it public as well. • Why so many individual System.Web.* DLLs?

  I've been thinking about ways to refactor a fairly expansive class/utility library I have, and one thing I think I want to do is split off any higher-level helper utilities that introduce new dependencies. I read some previous questions here, and one that I particularly noticed was a comment about how Microsoft freely uses namespaces across DLLs. The example given was System.Web - it's in the base framework, but there's also a System.Web.dll that adds more functionality to the namespace if you want it. I also noticed several other System.Web.* DLLs available, and I was wondering if there's a reason why they wouldn't be combined into a single DLL. Could it be that they have their own individual dependencies and Microsoft (like me) wanted to separate assemblies along those lines? Or is it for easier maintenance? Something else entirely?

• Is there anything like Zope Page Templates for Ruby on Rails?

  I have a Ruby on Rails app that I built myself, but which needs a redesign by a professional designer. I know most designers just give you Photoshop mockups and slices, but I would like to hire someone to implement the design as well, which means rewriting the css style sheets and the erb and haml templates. The problem is that I want someone else to implement the redesign without exposing my business logic code to the redesign implementer. Also, I wish there was a way to allow a designer to implement a redesign on a Ruby on Rails site without having to know anything about Ruby on Rails. Are either of these scenarios possible using any combination of software tools? • NUnit with an ASP.net web site

  Hi folks, I'm currently trying to upgrade our build server at work, going from having no build server to having one! I'm using JetBrains TeamCity (having used ReSharper for a couple of years I trust their stuff), and intend to use NUnit and MSBuild. However, I've come up with an issue: it appears that it is not possible to test an ASP.net Web Site with NUnit. I had assumed it would be possible to configure it to test App_Code after build, however it seems that the only way to do tests nicely is through converting the Web Site to a Web Application (which my boss does not like the idea of). Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I could go about this? Please bear in mind that the testing needs to be able to be fired automatically from TeamCity.

• Call an external web service from a servlet

  Hi, I'm developing a servlet that gets a name of a web service and could be forward the request to an external web service, for example: "http://www.webservice.com/..." I have build a response wrapper that intercept response output but I can't forward request to an external web service, it works only if I redirect the request to a servlet that is on same server. Example: request.getRequestDispatcher("aMyServlet").forward(request, response) IT WORKS request.getRequestDispatcher("http://www.webservice.com/...").forward(request, response) IT DON'T WORKS because Tomcat search "http://www.webservice.com/..." on the server as a local resource. How can I do external request? Thanks

• Refactoring thick client legacy application

I want to clean things out and refactor the code out completely, so there is a clear seperation of concerns. I am looking at MVC or some other suitable design pattern in order to achieve this. I would like to get recommendations from people who have walked this road before - Do I use MVP or MVC (or another pattern)?
