    I've seen offerings such as VPSs (Linode, Rackspace Cloud), which are very cheap but you're on your own, and managed hosting (Engine Yard, Rackspace), which are very expensive but they do all the system administration for you, in some cases even writing your deploy scripts. Is there any kind of middle-ground option where I don't have to pay the huge flat rate for the management, but can still request specific sysadmin tasks to be carried out and pay on an hourly basis?

    Hi guys, I've installed SQL Server 2008 R2, but connecting to my local machine in SQL Management Studio fails: Putting "localhost" or "." as the server name results in the same error. I've narrowed down the problem: there are no SQL services installed: Bringing up the Services control panel applet shows me there are no MS SQL services installed. Things I've tried: Repair install of SQL Complete uninstall and reinstall of all MS SQL products. How can I get SQL Server running?

    Hi All, i am getting the following error while upgrading the server from ESX3.5i to ESX3.5.. and the server gets Stuck. it says : Starting System Management Homepage:.......ok Starting HP Insight Manager Agents: ipmi_si : servching for PCI device 0x3302 ipmi_si : Trying "Kcs" at memory address 0xf7ef.... ipmi_si : Found PCI BMC at BAR address 0xf7ef....   • Windows 2008 IIS 7.0 HTTP to HTTPS Redirect -- Versus IIS 6.0 Mechanism

    This topic, creating a mechanism for redirection from HTTP to HTTPS on a Windows 2008 server running IIS 7.0 is a much written-about topic on the Internet. How this is done is really not so much my issue. My issue is more of explaining why this can't be done with the standard HTTP Redirect module that ships with Windows 2008 IIS 7.0. Instead, there are other methods needed that are more arduous. First, the IIS 6.0 method requires no externally available modules nor does it require any additional modifications to the web.config or any type of other development effort. It's outlined here: http://blogs.microsoft.co.il/blogs/dorr/archive/2009/01/13/how-to-force-redirection-from-http-to-https-on-iis-6-0.aspx And, you can see the basic steps are to run the snap-in, get the properties on the site, and do some modifications. Presto, you have the HTTP -- HTTP redirect setup. Now, on the IIS 7.0 platform, it doesn't seem this simple. An initial search found the following site: http://www.sslshopper.com/iis7-redirect-http-to-https.html Which has two separate approcates: 1. Involves installing a separately available Microsoft module -- URL Rewrite Module, and then adding XML to the web.config. 2. Custom Error Page. ...there might be other methods, but these are the basic ones and the first is listed as the primary method. But wait...There exists on the IIS 7.0 an HTTP Redirect Module. So...why can't I use the HTTP Redirect Module to do this very thing? This is really my big question. I need to know this because my management is going to insist I use the HTTP Redirect Module and set up the HTTP to HTTPS redirect in a similar fashion to how we do in IIS 6.0. Can someone please explain to me, in clean, simple, easy to understand, terms that both I and my management can understand as to why I need to go get the URL Rewrite Module and install that on the server and make the web.config changes suggested by the article instead of simply using the HTTP Redirect module that's already installed on the site?     ...when logged into a Server via remote Desktop? I see no way to Access Windows security. In "old" 2008 R2 there was a "Windows Security" entry in the start menu when coming via rdp. In the new Metro Start Menu, the username context menu allows me to lock the Computer or log out - but not Change the Password. Yes, I can go through user Management, but this is not something I want People to do ;)

  • Removing "Transfer To..." and "Show Converted Files" from uTorrent's context menu

    Under uTorrent version 3.1.3 (and possibly earlier), the context menu has taken on 2 new options, "Transfer To...", for moving a download to a mobile device, and "Show Converted Files", for built-in conversion. I prefer to do all my file management and conversions manually, and the options are, at best, annoying space wasters. In fact, I'm not sure these features are even available outside of uTorrent Plus, which is not something I run. Is it possible to remove them from the context menu?

    We have DFS setup using the DFS Management Administrator Tool. I turned on replication in the Distributed File System Administrator Tool as well and this morning we lost tons of files from that share. Please explain to me why this was wrong and if there is anything that can be done to repair it. (No, we don't have backups. We have some shadow copies, but those were deleted as well. We have been using DFS as its own backup)

  • Why can't I connect to remote Microsoft SQL Server through SSH tunnel?

    I have at home a D-Link DIR-615 C1 router with DD-WRT. I set up the SSH server on the router, and log on through an SSH2-RSA passphrase-protected key. That router is the gateway between the local network and the internet. One of the computers on that network has Microsoft SQL Server 2008 installed, with TCP/IP protocol enabled through port 1433. I've set up port forwarding on the router, so that remote connections are possible and are, in fact, working (some developers log on remotely without problems). I am part of another network, that has internet access through a proxy server, which only has ports 80 and 443 opened. I can't connect to that MSSQL server on that remote server because 1433 port is closed on this network. I connected (using Putty) through 443 port to my router's SSH server, and set up 2 tunnels. One is for RDP (3389), and it's working. The other is for 1433 port, to connect to the server. I can't connect through the SSH tunnel to the MS SQL Server, neither through telnet, or through GUI clients. Am I missing something? Additional details: on connect, I get this error from SQL Server Management Studio: TITLE: Connect to Server Cannot connect to localhost:14330. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 3) For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=3&LinkId=20476 BUTTONS: OK The tunnel is configured like this: L14330 192.168.0.103:1433 192.168.0.103 is the permanent address of the SQL Server on the LAN. I also successfully forwarded TCP traffic of 3389 port to that IP, so tunneling is working to that IP address.   • Hyper-V/Ubuntu server 12.04 - VM does not stop

    i just installed a ubuntu 12.04 server on a 2008 R2 Hyper-V server and all is fine (networking/storage ...). There is just one thing, when i halt my linux (using "sudo halt"), i can see on the console that the system is halted but the vm status on hyper-v is still "started". Then i need to stop it on the hyper-v management tool. Anybody has an idea on how to properly stop this VM on hyper-V automatically ? Thanks, Alex

  • Is there a better IIS 7 bindings dialog?

    Some of my sites in IIS have 20-30 bindings and the bindings dialog box in IIS 7 is 4 lines, which makes editing bindings a real pain. Are there any replacements/upgrades for the dialog specifically? I realize behind the scenes it is just updating an XML file, but I would prefer not to directly edit the XML file or start writing a separate management application, if possible.

    I want to use an intercepting squid server to cache specific large zip files that users in my network download frequently. I have configured squid on a gateway machine and caching is working for "static" zip files that are served from an Apache web server outside our network. The files that I want to have cached by squid are zip files 100MB which are served from a heroku-hosted Rails application. I set an ETag header (SHA hash of the zip file on the server) and Cache-Control: public header. However, these files are not cached by squid.   • Are EC2 security group changes effective immediately for running instances?

    I have an EC2 instance running, and it belongs to a security group. If I add a new allowed connection to that security group through AWS Management Console, should that change be effective immediately? Or perhaps only after restart of the instance? In my case, I'm trying to allow access to PostgreSQL's default port (tcp 5432 5432 0.0.0.0/0), and I'm not sure if it's the EC2 firewall or PostgreSQL's settings that are refusing the connection.

So I tried to make it NTFS, but I had to format the drive and I don't want to, since it will erase my data. Does anyone know how I can restore my partition without losing my data?

  • What am I missing out on when using msbuild to deploy?

    I'm trying to use msbuild/webdeploy with teamcity to deploy to IIS. However, I'm getting an ERROR_USER_UNAUTHORIZED error message and link pointing me to this page on iis.net. I'm using the Web Management Service to do this and I can verify that the username and password exist (I can log into the server with that combination), the site exists and the the user has IIS manager permissions: So what am I missing out?
