  • ubuntu freezes daily

    I have been using ubuntu daily for about 2 weeks now. I really like it but I have noticed that it freezes daily when I have things like chromium and firefox open or when I start watching videos. I realize these might be memory intensive apps/actions but I doubt that with my comps specs they would cause it to freeze. When I installed ubuntu, I remember that it warned me about installing it in a ext2 partition and not in a ext4 one. Could that be the issue? and is there a way to fix it without reinstalling? edit: specs are, 1.9gb ram & Intel® Core™2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13GHz × 2; ubuntu 12.04x64

  • Full screen: launchbar + panel overlaps when showing a dialog box

    I'm developing a program for 12.04 that will run on full-screen, so I would like to have full control of what appears on the screen. However, when I show another window (possibly a dialog/message box), the Uunity Panel and Launcher appears on the top and left side of the screen. I've experienced this behavior with other applications (Firefox, Gnubg) as well when in full-screen mode. I tried to play with the settings, now my dialog box is hidden from the the taskbar, set to float on it's parent, which is my full screen window. The problem still exists. Is there a way to prevent these panels from showing up, when the new window isn't shown in taskbar, or it's parent is a full-screen window? Or do I need to completely disable them?

    I am planning to upgrade from 8.10 to 10.04. But I am wondering if there will be data loss during the upgrade? For example: Will the application that I have installed on 8.10 still be there after upgrade? Will the settings of the applications such as the bookmarks for Firefox and for Google Chrome be preserved? Will all the personal files under my home directory be preserved? Any other things I need to know for the upgrade? Thanks and regards!

  • Is there any problem with using two slashes in the middle of a URL? [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: What does the double slash mean in URLs? I'm working on a mod_rewrite URL structure as follows: http://example.com/search/filter1/filter2/filter3/filter4 There are some conditions where it is OK for the first attribute to be blank, but i want to keep the other attributes in the same position. (Otherwise I can't assume that the attribute in the second position represents what I want it to represent.) However this results in some URLs like this: http://example.com/search//filter2/filter3/filter4 This seems to work in all browsers I've tested (Chrome,Firefox,IE9,IE compatible) and I'm not seeing any errors on the server side, so I can't think of any problems in using it. But it just looks wrong and weird to me and I'm not used to seeing it. Are there any potential downsides to using a structure that encourages URLs like this, or any major reasons no one seems to use it? (Everything I search in Google assumes I'm talking about the two slashes after http:)

  • Screen gets garbled on some web sites

    I have a Gateway notebook with graphics card 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS690M [Radeon X1200 Series] with open source driver Linux version 2.6.32 -28 - generic. No other operating system on the computer. When I am using firefox to browse the web, everything normally works just fine except that when I attempt to access some particular web pages the screen completely messes up going mostly white with various streaks, etc., although I can access other pages of the same site without problems. When I run the cursor over the garbled screen, bits of the image recompose themselves, at least partially, and I can continue to open the applications window, or turn the computer off, or open the terminal, or take screen shots, etc., although all menus are unreadable. Also, when I zoom in on Google Earth the screen completely messes up. At all other times, there are no apparent problems. Any ideas?

  • Can't interact with windows after first login

    Every time I restart my computer and login into my ubuntu account for the first time, I can't click on anything besides the bar on the left. So I can start Firefox from there, but I am not able to click on the new tab button etc. Same will all other apps. I can start the Terminal via the keyboard, but I can't move it around. So I have to logout via the keyboard and login again. Usually everything works fine now. Just waiting doesn't help. The only obvious change I made to Ubuntu was to move the /home directory.

    I have just installed a new copy of Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop . i have noticed that my system is running 4x to 5x faster than normal . i have just install Vmware Desktop & centos for testing something . i have noticed that i has installed in just like less than 1 minute !! My system is booting so fast that after starting my laptop i got GUI in like 10 to 13 sec & shutting down in like 2 to 3 sec & all programs ( Firefox , Chrome , etc ) running so fast that i can see .... The only change i made after installation is cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness 1 How do I configure swappiness? The System is Dell N 5110 i7 with 8GB of RAM So my question is that what should i look for that why my system running very fast ?

  • GUI is not displayed anymore

    I am running 12.04 LTS on a VM. I encountered a problem with the screen being black and the familiar orange background showing for a fraction of a second when clicking or resizing the screen. I had to shutdown the machine and now I have no GUI. I only get a black command-line interface. As some other posts suggest, I attempted: sudo service lightdm restart This doesn't work for me because it gets stuck at this point: Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: user.bin.firefox Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: user.sbin.rsyslogd * Starting AppArmor profiles [ OK ] Any ideas?

  • Unable to upgrade 11.04 to 11.10

    I have Ubuntu 11.04 installed in my laptop and tried to upgrade it by opening the update manager and and making the necessary settings in settings - updates - release upgrade - normal releases and then hitting the check button. But nothing appeared indicating later version is available to be upgraded. When I run the following sudo apt-get dist-upgrade below is the result that appeared. Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Calculating upgrade... Done 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Also I am unable to watch YouTube videos in the Firefox 15.0 in my Ubuntu 11.04.

  • How does the HUD prioritize commands?

    Every now and then I want to reach the "Edit Preferences" menu item in Firefox, and the HUD makes this very convenient. ALT + "Edi" will suggest exactly that to me. Something that I find annoying however is that if I complete the work "Edit" instead, the HUD will switch to suggest "Network Edit preferences" instead. While this is a perfectly valid match as well, it seems like an inconsistent behaviour to me. Could someone explain in more detail how the matching works, so that I can make better use of the HUD?

  • Opening programs very slow on ubuntu 12.10

    When I open any program for first time after boot, it loads VERY slowly (Doesn't matter how long after boot). For example, terminal takes 2-3 seconds, skype and firefox often take much longer. If I close it and open again, it loads in reasonable time (<1 second). I got Intel Core i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz, so it shouldn't be hardware issue... What is causing this? Disk benchmark: Average read time: 115.5 MB/s (100 samples) Average write time: 98.7 MB/s (100 samples) Average access time: 11.79 msec (1000 samples)

  • How to shutdown VMware Fusion virtual machine on host shutdown

    I have a Mac mini running Mavericks server. I installed the Atmail server + webmail vm [a linux centos distribution] in VMware Fusion Professional 6 with the VMware Tools addon. It works flawlessly. I've set it to start on boot and that works very reliably. However I've been looking for a way to also safely and gracefully shut it down whenever OS X shuts down for whatever reason. The Mac is connected to a UPS and configured to perform an automatic shutdown in case the battery starts running low so that's no additional problem. Now the first thing I did was to go into Fusion's prefs and select "Power off the vm" when closing it. However I noticed that for some arcane reason closing the vm window would actually forcibly power off the vm: so then I found this post that showed me how to change the default power options and I managed to have the vm cleanly shutdown when closing its window or quitting Fusion altogether. At this point I was hoping to have solved the problem but as it turns out upon invoking system shutdown OS X doesn't wait for the vm to shutdown and terminates Fusion before it has a chance to do so. At this point I started looking for a way to automate the process of shutting down the guest os via some advanced setting but had no luck in doing so. That's when I found a command to shut the vm down: vmrun and it worked. The only thing left was to find out a way to execute this script on os x shutdown and giving it a little time to power off completely. However this turned out to be a nightmare: I spent hours looking through several ways to do this with Startup Items, rc.shutdown, cron, launchd, etc... but none of them worked the way I had configured them. I have to say that I found very limited information on using launchd for a shutdown script execution and I know it's the latest thing in the OS X world so I'm hoping someone out there among you will be able to help me out with this. I still think this is an extremely basic feature to ask for and I was really surprised to find this little documentation on so many different aspects of this problem. Is Fusion too basic of an application for this? I really hope someone can help. Thank you very much in advance.

  • What are some fast methods for navigating to frequently used folders in Windows 7?

    (This is a followup question from my previous question.) In windows XP I used to be able to quickly navigate to frequently used folders by making use of the 'Favorites' menu item and the hotkey behaviour. In certain conditions it could be set up so that getting to a particular folder was as easy as alt-a x (and without a file explorer window open it was as fast as win-e alt-a x). I am struggling to get anywhere near this speed in Windows 7 and would like to solicit advice from others regarding fast folder navigation to see if I am missing any methods. My current way to navigate quickly is basically move hand to mouse move cursor to navigation pane/pain. scroll all the way to the top (because normally I the panel is focused on whatever deep directory structure I am already in). sift through my 50+ favorites to get the one I want, or click a link to a folder that contains further links in some sort of 'pseudo-tree' functionality. select it. This is slower than my previous method by upwards of an order of magnitude. There are a couple of things I've contemplated: add expandable folders, not just direct links, to the favorites menu. add expandable folders, not just direct links, to the start menu. add links of my favorite folders to a submenu of the start menu so that they come up when I search them. They do but this still rather cumbersome started using 7stacks - url here (I cannot link the url directly due to lack of reputation but http://www.alastria.com/index.php?p=software-7s). This is about the closest I've gotten to some sort of compact, customizeable, easy to access, tree based navigation structure. How do you power users quickly navigate to your favorite folders? Are there keyboard shortcuts I am missing? Can someone recommend other apps or addon or extensions that can achieve this sort of functionality? The Current solution (thanks to the answers below) I am going to use is a combination of Autohotkey and 7stacks - autohotkey to launch 7stacks, 7stacks with the 'menu' stack type for fast, key-enabled navigation to folders organised in a tree structure. This solves about 90% of the issue, the only issues are (note that these are really minor, I am really splitting hairs more than anything here) Can't use this for existing folder navigation (ie already have a explorer window open, want to go to another directory) A bit more cumbersome to add/remove entries to compared to xp favorites. A little slower than xp favorites. Whatever. I'm happy. Thanks guys.   • USB mouse disconnecting and reconnecting randomly and often

    Specs: Q6600, evga 780I sli mobo, 4gig RAM, logitech MX518, windows 7 64bit, evga gtx 260, 650W power supply (single rail) The problem I am having is my mouse will reconnect/disconnect (will even hear the sounds from windows) and the light on the bottom of the mouse will turn off/turn on as it starts working again. It really sucks to be playing a game (and happens on desktop as well) for the mouse to just die out for a few seconds and come back. Sometimes it will not happen for days and other times it will do it 2 or more times within 15 seconds. I have tried two different wired mice, have tried multiple USB ports (on front of computer, back of computer, have also used a USB hub and have also plugged in a card that connects to the USB connectors on the motherboard and adds a few usb ports to the back of the computer, and I also bought a USB 2.0 PCI card and that did not help). Nothing else seems to reconnect like this, my usb keyboard has never once cut out like the mouse does and neither have any of the other devices I have connected (webcam, usb hub, various devices sometimes connected through usb cables, and IR reciever for windows media center remote). I have disconnected all usb devices except for my keyboard and mouse and the problem still occurs. I guess it could be something wrong with my motherboard but since no other devices behave similarly I'm just hoping that it is some kind of driver conflict. Installing logitech's drivers has had no effect. It seemed at first that if I go to device manager and uninstall HID-compliant mouse (that and logitech mx518 are listed) that would fix it but it doesn't seem to work anymore or at least not every time (it keeps reinstalling). I have googled "usb mouse disconnects and reconnects" and it seems to be fairly common but none of those were resolved. To stick some easy steps: It happens with or without the drivers installed It has happened with multiple mice on the same computer Bios is the latest version (P08) Motherboard drivers are the latest version Device manager is listing no problems on any USB devices Happens with every usb port, even addon usb cards Happens when all usb devices aside from mouse and keyboard are unplugged I read that maybe it is an IRQ conflict and I tried to look into that but did not really know what was going on, but didn't see anything obviously wrong.   • Gacutil.exe on Windows Server 2008 Standard SP2

    I'm trying to deploy a Web Part Feature as part of solution. Solution being add to the store and feature being added successfully. Full trust enabled in Web.Config for bin deployment of the .DLL but Web Part not working when page viewed by a non-admin user... So, decided to deploy to GAC but discovered that gacutil.exe is not included with the OS? The only place I can find it is in the Windows SDK with a download size of over 22GB! I know I can choose to download only certain components, but which ones should I select and are there any dependencies? Better yet, is there an easier way to get a copy of the gacutil.exe tool?

  • Eclipse says "Access Denied" when running javaw and how to fix it?

    I'm trying to get Eclipse to compile and run a HelloWorld class but it can't even do that. I have installed Eclipse x86 SDK 4.2.0 together bit with the latest JRE and JDK both in 64 bit as well. I also have the PATH variables set to respond to command prompts. When I try to run the following code: class HelloWorld { public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.println("Hello World!" ) ; } } And it returns the following error: Exception occurred executing command line. Cannot run program "C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe" (in directory "C:\Users\Default\workspace\devs"): CreateProcess error=5, Access is denied. Can you help me fix this? Thanks!
