  Microsoft SQL Server Compact 4.0 is a free, embedded database that software developers can use for building ASP.NET websites and Windows desktop applications. SQL Server Compact 4.0 is the default database for Microsoft WebMatrix. For enhanced development and debugging capabilities, including designer support, Visual Studio can be used to develop ASP.NET web applications and websites using SQL Server Compact 4.0. Enabled to work in the medium or partial trust environments in the web servers, and can be easily deployed along with the website to the third party website hosting service providers. SQL Server CE 4.0 also provides stronger data security with the use of the SHA2 encryption algorithms for encrypting the databases.   Earlier, I have tried to cover some important points about wait stats in detail. Here are some points that we had covered earlier. DMV related to wait stats reset when we reset SQL Server services DMV related to wait stats reset when we manually reset the wait types However, at times, there is a need of making this data persistent so that we can take a look at them later on. Sometimes, performance tuning experts do some modifications to the server and try to measure the wait stats at that point of time and after some duration. I use it to find out when I have captured the wait stats and then use it in my SELECT query to SELECT wait stats related to that time group. Many times, I select more than 5 or 6 different set of wait stats and I find this method very convenient to find the difference between wait stats. • Keyboard locking up in Visual Studio 2010

  One of the initiatives I’m involved with on the ASP.NET and Visual Studio teams is the Tactical Test Team (TTT), which is a group of testers who dedicate a portion of their time to roaming around and testing different parts of the product.  What this generally translates to is a day and a bit a week helping out with areas of the product that have been flagged as risky, or tackling problems that span both ASP.NET and Visual Studio.  There is also a separate component of this effort outside of TTT which is to help with customer scenarios and design. I enjoy being on TTT because it allows me the opportunity to look at the entire product and gain expertise in a wide range of areas.  This week, I’m looking at Visual Studio 2010 performance problems, and this gem with the keyboard in Visual Studio locking up ended up catching my attention. First of all, here’s a link to one of the many Connect bugs describing the problem: Microsoft Connect I like this problem because it really highlights the challenges of reproducing customer bugs.  There aren’t any clear steps provided here, and I don’t know a lot about your environment: not just the basics like our OS version, but also what third party plug-ins or antivirus software you might be running that might contribute to the problem.  In this case, my gut tells me that there is more than one bug here, just by the sheer volume of reports.  Here’s another thread where users talk about it: Microsoft Connect The volume and different configurations are staggering.  From a customer perspective, this is a very clear cut case of basic functionality not working in the product, but from our perspective, it’s hard to find something reproducible: even customers don’t quite agree on what causes the problem (installing ReSharper seems to cause a problem…or does it?). So this then, is the start of a QA investigation. If anybody has isolated repro steps (just comment on this post) that they can provide this will immensely help us nail down the issue(s), but I’ll be doing a multi-part series on my progress and methodologies as I look into the problem.

• Caching in the .NET Stack: Inside-Out

The first half covers using local, remote and persistent cache stores inside the solution, including the .NET MemoryCache, NCache Express, AppFabric Caching, memcached, Azure Table Storage and local disk stores. The second half covers caching outside the solution in HTTP clients and proxies, and how to set up ASP.NET WebForms, MVC, Web API and WCF projects to use HTTP validation and expiration caching.   The course takes a hands-on approach, starting with a distributed solution that has no caching, analysing key points which can benefit from caching, and adding different types of cache. At the end of the course I run through a set of before and after performance tests, stressing the solution under load. Without caching and with 60 concurrent users the page response time maxes out at 18 seconds - with caching that falls to 2 seconds, so it's a huge improvement from very little effort. I’d be glad to hear feedback if you watch the course, especially if it’s as positive as my editor’s.

• Google Analytics setting cookies on static content despite being on entirely separate domain

  I recently decided to comply with the YSlow recommendation that static content is hosted on a cookieless domain. As I already use the root of my domain (donaldjenkins.com) to host my website—on which Google Analytics sets a few cookies—that meant I had to move the CNAME URL for the CDN serving the static files from cdn.donaldjenkins.com to an entirely separate, dedicated domain. I purchased cdn.dj (yes, it's a real Djibouti domain name), hosted the files on the root (which contains nothing else, other than a robots.txt file) and set a CNAME of e.cdn.dj for the CDN. This setup works, but I was rather surprised to find that YSlow was still flagging the static files for not being cookie-free: here's a screenshot: The cdn.djdomain was new, and was never used for anything other than hosting these static files. Running httpfox on the site shows the _utma and _utmz Google Analytics cookies are being set on the static files listed above—despite their being hosted on an entirely separate, dedicated domain.   I’m currently wasting spending my Easter bank holiday putting together my presentation SSIS Dataflow Performance Tuning for the upcoming SQL Bits conference in London and in doing so I’m researching some old material about how the dataflow actually works. Boring as it is I’ve gotten easily sidelined and have chanced upon an old video on Channel 9 entitled Euan Garden - Tour of SQL Server Team (part I). Euan is a former member of the SQL Server team and in this series of videos he walks the halls of the SQL Server building on Microsoft’s Redmond campus talking to some of the various protagonists and in this one he happens upon the SQL Server Integration Services team. The video was shot in 2004 so this is a fascinating (to me anyway) glimpse into the development of SSIS from before it was ever shipped and if you’re a geek like me you’ll really enjoy this behind-the-scenes look into how and why the product was architected. The video is also notable for the presence of the cameraman – none other than the now-rather-more-famous-than-he-was-then Robert Scoble. • Convert your Hash keys to object properties in Ruby

  Being a Ruby noob (and having a background in Groovy), I was a little surprised that you can not access hash objects using the dot notation.  I am writing an application that relies heavily on XML and JSON data.  This data will need to be displayed and I would rather use book.author.first_name over book[‘author’][‘first_name’].  A quick search on google yielded this post on the subject. So, taking the DRYOO (Don’t Repeat Yourself Or Others) concept.  I came up with this: 1: class ::Hash 2:  3: # add keys to hash 4: def to_obj 5: self.each do |k,v| 6: if v.kind_of? Hash 7: v.to_obj 8: end 9: k=k.gsub(/\.|\s|-|\/|\'/, '_').downcase.to_sym 10: self.instance_variable_set("@#{k}", v) ## create and initialize an instance variable for this key/value pair 11: self.class.send(:define_method, k, proc{self.instance_variable_get("@#{k}")}) ## create the getter that returns the instance variable 12: self.class.send(:define_method, "#{k}=", proc{|v| self.instance_variable_set("@#{k}", v)}) ## create the setter that sets the instance variable 13: end 14: return self 15: end 16: end This works pretty well.  It converts each of your keys to properties of the Hash.  However, it doesn’t sit very well with me because I probably will not use 90% of the properties most of the time.  Why should I go through the performance overhead of creating instance variables for all of the unused ones? Enter the ‘magic method’ #missing_method: 1: class ::Hash 2: def method_missing(name) 3: return self[name] if key? name 4: self.each { |k,v| return v if k.to_s.to_sym == name } 5: super.method_missing name 6: end 7: end This is a much cleaner method for my purposes.  Quite simply, it checks to see if there is a key with the given symbol, and if not, loop through the keys and attempt to find one. I am a Ruby noob, so if there is something I am overlooking, please let me know.

• Restrict SSL access for some paths on a apache2 server

  I wanted to allow access to www.mydomain.com/login through ssl only. E.g.: Whenever someone accessed http://www.mydomain.com/login, I wanted him to be redirect to https://www.mydomain.com/login so it's impossible for him/her to access that site without SSL. I accomplished this by adding the following lines to the virtual host for www.mydomain.com on port 80 in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} ^80$ RewriteRule ^/login(.*)$ https://%{SERVER_NAME}/login$1 [L,R] RewriteLog "/var/log/apache2/rewrite.log" Now, I want to restrict using SSL for www.mydomain.com. That means, whenever someone accessed https://www.mydomain.com, I want him to be redirected to http://www.mydomain.com (for performance reasons). I tried this by adding the following lines to the virtual host of www.mydomain.com on port 443 in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default-ssl: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} ^443$ RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ http://%{SERVER_NAME}/$1 [L,R] RewriteLog "/var/log/apache2/rewrite.log" But when I now try to access www.mydomain.com/login, I get an error message that the server has caused to many redirects. That does make sense. Obviously, the two RewriteRules are playing ping-pong against each other. How could I work around this?

• Extending UPK with Enablement Packs

  We've mentioned in earlier posts that UPK Development keeps the tool up to date through the use of Enable Service Packs (ESP'S). Regular releases ensure that the UPK Developer supports updates to targeted applications as well as new Java updates. Installing an ESP is quick and easy. • Download the latest ESP from My Oracle Support (requires a My Oracle Support account). • Run the setup for each client machine that uses the UPK Developer • Run the Library Updates from one of the clients (multi-user only) Enablement Pack 1 for UPK 3.6.1 contains new features such as a new Tabbed Gateway, FireFox 3.6 support for the Player and SmartHelp, and several new target application versions. But a very exciting feature that is part of this ESP is now available to all Oracle E-Business Suite customers. Until now, a requirement for EBS customers who wish to record UPK content is to install delivered library files (CUSTOM.pll and ODPN.pll) on to the Oracle Application Server. These files were required to present context information to the UPK Developer so that content can be launched in a context sensitive manner. This requirement involved the Oracle system administrator to transfer, install and compile these libraries into the system. Usually a simple process, however, we understood the need to streamline the procedure. With ESP 1 for UPK 3.6.1, these pll files are no longer required. Now, a simple procedure from within the EBS application can make context available to the UPK recorder. From the System Profile, search for UPK: Change the Site field to Enable UPK Recording. Save the Form. Context information will now be made available to the UPK Recorder without involving the System Administrator or DBA. The setting you see here makes context available to all client machines recording content with UPK and does not affect the performance of your EBS application.

  SQL Server Management Studio returns results in Grid View, Text View and to the file. When we copy results from Grid View to Excel there is a common complaint that the column  header displayed in resultset is not copied to the Excel. I often spend time in performance tuning databases and I run many DMV’s in SSMS to get a quick view of the server. In my case it is almost certain that I need all the time column headers when I copy my data to excel or any other place. SQL Server Management Studio have two different ways to do this. Method 1: Ad-hoc When result is rendered you can right click on the resultset and click on Copy Header. This will copy the headers along with the resultset. Additionally, you can use the shortcut key CTRL+SHIFT+C for coping column headers along with the resultset. Method 2: Option Setting at SSMS level This is SSMS level settings and I kept this option always selected as I often need the column headers when I select the resultset. Go Tools >> Options >> Query Results >> SQL Server >> Results to Grid >> Check the Box “Include column header when copying or saving the results.” Both of the methods are discussed in following SQL in Sixty Seconds Video.   In 2010 I had an experience to work for a business that had lots of challenges. One of those challenges was luck of technical architecture and business value recognition which translated in spending enormous amount of manpower and money on creating C++ solutions for desktop client w/o using .NET to minimize “footprint” (2#) of the client application in deployment environments. This was an awkward experience, considering that C++ custom code was created from scratch to make clients talk to .NET backend while simple having .NET as a dependency would cut time to market by at least 50% (and I’m downplaying the estimate). Regardless, recent Microsoft announcement about .NET vNext has reminded me that experience and how short sighted architecture at that company was. Investment made into making C++ client that cannot be maintained internally by team due to it’s specialization in .NET have created a situation where code to maintain will be more brutal over the time and  number of developers understanding it will be going and shrinking. Not only that. The ability to go cross-platform (#3) and performance achievement gained with native compilation (#1) would be an immediate pay back. Why am I saying all this? To make a simple point to myself and remind again – when working on a product that needs to get to the market, make it simple, make it work, and then see how technology is changing and how you can adopt. Simplicity will not let you down. But a complex solution will always do.

• What is the definition of "Big Data"?

  Is there one? All the definitions I can find describe the size, complexity / variety or velocity of the data. Wikipedia's definition is the only one I've found with an actual number Big data sizes are a constantly moving target, as of 2012 ranging from a few dozen terabytes to many petabytes of data in a single data set. However, this seemingly contradicts the MIKE2.0 definition, referenced in the next paragraph, which indicates that "big" data can be small and that 100,000 sensors on an aircraft creating only 3GB of data could be considered big. IBM despite saying that: Big data is more simply than a matter of size. have emphasised size in their definition. O'Reilly has stressed "volume, velocity and variety" as well. Though explained well, and in more depth, the definition seems to be a re-hash of the others - or vice-versa of course. I think that a Computer Weekly article title sums up a number of articles fairly well "What is big data and how can it be used to gain competitive advantage". But ZDNet wins with the following from 2012: “Big Data” is a catch phrase that has been bubbling up from the high performance computing niche of the IT market... If one sits through the presentations from ten suppliers of technology, fifteen or so different definitions are likely to come forward. Each definition, of course, tends to support the need for that supplier’s products and services. Imagine that. Basically "big data" is "big" in some way shape or form. What is "big"? Is it quantifiable at the current time? If "big" is unquantifiable is there a definition that does not rely solely on generalities?

• What needs to be done to port a Windows Flash game to Android?

  My team has developed a game using Flash (with Lua embeded) that targets Windows. And we want to port that game to Android (also iOS in the future). It's acceptable to rewrite the Flash part of client. And some other team in our company recommended Unity3D to replace the Flash part. Since we have no experience in Android/iOS development, we would need to learn some new tool/language anyway. So we would like that learning still be useful after the porting and when we starting a new game. Any thoughts? Edits: I think it is worth noticing the background of the game : the project is started by a tester and developer, both without knowing much about flex and actionscript. They built the game while learning, so most of the code is hard to maintain. I and other two developers joined the project after a year or so when one has leave (and the other be our manager). The other two developers are just graduates with little experience and little knowledge of flex. I am good at the server part and the c# language. Based on the fact that the code is hard to maintain (and we do need to change a lot of code to make the game easier to playe in a mobile device), and I am good at c# (and learning). I still tend to do the porting with Unity, which could get better performance and possibly save time.
