• Virtual PC: Cannot restore machine from hibernate

  I have two virtual machines set up from Virtual PC on Windows 7 Professional: Windows XP Mode and Xubuntu. Last time I used them (last month or so), I had closed them by hibernating. Evidently, I have meanwhile downloaded a Windows Update affecting VPC and now receive the following error in restoring either of them from hibernation: 'Xubuntu' could not be restored because of either host processor type mismatch or lack of hardware-assisted virtualization support in the system. I've been through the virtual machine's settings, and there's nowhere an option to simply reboot it. (Virtualization is not the problem, as I can create a new virtual machine without any problems.) Any ideas?

• Ghost application error

  Back story for better understanding: I have a ghost made by someone else and toady some one I worked with made a new ghost in the same folder with the regular ghost I work with. I am trying to run the ghost now but get a 1808: Ghost Decompression Error and after aborting I get this message "Application Error 19225: Ghost has detected corruption in the image file. Please perform an integrity check on the image. If this problem persists, contact Symantec Technical Support at http://service.symantec.com" I would like to now if him making a new ghost could have ruined the old ghost and if not where did my problem come from and how do I fix it ?

• How do I make some files on my machine accessible via HTTP using Apache?

  I did a wget on the source and built the apache binaries correctly. Now what do I need to do to get some documents accessible using HTTP (start some services?)? Also, do I need to group all the files I want to make accessible in some directory and make the directory and its contents accessible or can I just make the individual documents available? I will be providing these links to my colleagues and do not want them to be down, so need to make sure that the apache services are up automatically after a reboot. Does apache have some inbuilt support for this?

The agenda featured an introduction by Ray Wagner, Managing VP at Gartner, followed by Amit discussing the trends in Identity and Access Management shaping Oracle's strategy. Today we are seeing the largest re-architecture in a decade. Every business from manufacturing to retail is transforming the way they do business. Manufacturing companies are becoming manufacturing services companies. Retail organizations are embracing social retail. Healthcare is being delivered on-line around the clock. Identity Management is at the center of the transformation. Whether you are Toyota embracing a social network for cars or launching the next Iphone, the Identity of the user provides context to enable the interaction and secure the experience. All of these require greater attention to the context of the user and externalizing applications for customers and employees.  Ranjan discussed how Cisco is transforming  by integrating 1800 applications to a single access management framework and consolidating 3M users across 4 data centers to support internal and external processes. David Lee demonstrated how to use Oracle Access Manager 11g R2 on a mobile application to sign-on across multiple applications while connecting mobile applications to a single access control policy.

• uploading a python site to httpdocs?

  OK - so we've agreed to host a python site, got the files and not sure where to go next. We use a dedicated server and manage it mainly with plesk which has a tick box for a python support but not sure what this does. This is all the info i have from previous hosts; 10,000 ft overview The site is intended to run on a Linux host, specifically Ubuntu Server (tho it should be fine on most distros). The web framework is CherryPy ( http://cherrypy.org/ ), which is a Python based framework. There is no database as such, instead the data is kept in JS files and loaded by the front end. nicholasbarker.com.c6a4facf0192/www/js/video_content_items.js is a prime example of this. • Passing multiple Vertex Attributes in GLSL 130

  (note this question is closely related to this one however I didn't fully understand the accepted answer) To support videocards in laptops I have to rewrite my GLSL 330 shaders to GLSL 130. I'm trying to do this but somehow I don't get vertex attributes to work properly. My 330 shaders look like this: #version 330 layout(location = 0) in vec4 position; layout(location = 3) in vec4 color; smooth out vec4 theColor; void main() { gl_Position = position; theColor = color; } Now this explicit layout is not allowed in GLSL 130 so I referenced this page to see what the default layouts for some values would be. As you can see position should be the 0th vertex attribute and color should be the 3rd vertex attribute. Because this is a test case I had already configured my explicit layouts in the same way, which worked, so I now simply rewrote my shader to this and expected it to work: #version 130 smooth out vec4 theColor; void main() { gl_Position = gl_Vertex; theColor = gl_Color; } However this doesn't work, the value of gl_Color is always (1,1,1,1). So how should I pass multiple vertex attributes to my GLSL 130 shaders? For reference, this is how I set my vertex buffer object and attributes (I've just adapted this tutorial to JAVA+JOGL) gl.glBindBuffer(GL3.GL_ARRAY_BUFFER, vertex_buffer_id); gl.glEnableVertexAttribArray(0); gl.glEnableVertexAttribArray(3); gl.glVertexAttribPointer(0, 4 , GL3.GL_FLOAT, false, 0, 0); gl.glVertexAttribPointer(3, 4, GL3.GL_FLOAT, false, 0, 4*4*4); gl.glDrawArrays(GL3.GL_TRIANGLE_STRIP, 0, 4); gl.glDisableVertexAttribArray(0); gl.glDisableVertexAttribArray(3); EDIT I solved the problem by querying for the layout locations of position an color using glGetAttribLocation however I still don't understand why the 'hardcoded' values like gl_Color didn't work, can't I upload data in there as normal? Shouldn't they be used?

• New version of SQL Server Data Tools is now available

  If you don’t follow the SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) blog then you may not know that two days ago an updated version of SSDT was released (and by SSDT I mean the database projects, not the SSIS/SSRS/SSAS stuff) along with a new version of the SSDT Power Tools. This release incorporates a an updated version of the SQL Server Data Tier Application Framework (aka DAC Framework, aka DacFX) which you can read about on Adam Mahood’s blog post SQL Server Data-Tier Application Framework (September 2012) Available. DacFX is essentially all the gubbins that you need to extract and publish .dacpacs and according to Adam’s post it incorporates a new feature that I think is very interesting indeed: Extract DACPAC with data – Creates a database snapshot file (.dacpac) from a live SQL Server or Windows Azure SQL Database that contains data from user tables in addition to the database schema. These packages can be published to a new or existing SQL Server or Windows Azure SQL Database using the SqlPackage.exe Publish action. Data contained in package replaces the existing data in the target database. In short, .dacpacs can now include data as well as schema. I’m very excited about this because one of my long-standing complaints about SSDT (and its many forebears) is that whilst it has great support for declarative development of schema it does not provide anything similar for data – if you want to deploy data from your SSDT projects then you have to write Post-Deployment MERGE scripts. This new feature for .dacpacs does not change that situation yet however it is a very important pre-requisite so I am hoping that a feature to provide declaration of data (in addition to declaration of schema which we have today) is going to light up in SSDT in the not too distant future. During this very interactive session we moved from a clearly technology view on the matter (Oracle SOA Suite) to an architectural view slicing from business to technology.   For those of you who may have missed it, Peter Flies, Principal Technical Support Engineer for WebCenter Content, gave an excellent webcast on database searching and indexing in WebCenter Content.  It's available for replay along with a download of the slidedeck.  Look for the one titled 'WebCenter Content: Database Searching and Indexing'. One of the items he led with...and concluded with...was a recommendation on optimizing your search collection if you are using full-text searching with the Oracle database.  This can greatly improve your search performance.  And this would apply to both Oracle Text Search and DATABASE.FULLTEXT search methods.  Peter describes how a collection can become fragmented over time as content is added, updated, and deleted.  Just like you should defragment your hard drive from time to time to get your files placed on the disk in the most optimal way, you should do the same for the search collection. And optimizing the collection is just a simple procedure call that can be scheduled to be run automatically.   beginctx_ddl.optimize_index('FT_IDCTEXT1','FULL', parallel_degree =>'1');end; When I checked my own test instance, I found my collection had a row fragmentation of about 80% After running the optimization procedure, it went down to 0% The knowledgebase article On Index Fragmentation and Optimization When Using OracleTextSearch or DATABASE.FULLTEXT [ID 1087777.1] goes into detail on how to check your current index fragmentation, how to run the procedure, and then how to schedule the procedure to run automatically.  While the article mentions scheduling the job weekly, Peter says he now is recommending this be run daily, especially on more active systems. And just as a reminder, be sure to involve your DBA with your WebCenter Content implementation as you go to production and over time.  We recently had a customer complain of slow performance of the application when it was discovered the database was starving for memory.  So it's always helpful to keep a watchful eye on your database.

• Ubuntu 14.04 boot error on Windows 8.1 - SYSLINUX 4.07 EDD

  I want to replace Windows 8.1 that came with my laptop with Ubuntu 14.04. I keep getting a black screen with this line: SYSLINUX 4.07 EDD 2013-07-25 Copyright (C) 1994-2013 H. Peter Anvin et al Things I did before: turned off fast boot disabled secure boot switched to Legacy instead of UEFI (even though a tutorial I found said this isn't really needed anymore, I still did anyway because I read it from the laptop's user guide: "If you need to install a legacy operating system, such as Windows (that is, any operating system before Windows 8), Linux or Dos, etc on your computer, you must change the boot mode to Legacy support." I chose to load from USB. and then that SYSLINUX 4.77 EDD.... appears I tried to install using the same USB on an old Lenovo S10-3. It worked. Though that S10-3 runs Lubuntu. Still it's probably safe to say that it's not the USB that has problems, right? Thanks for any help. I can't wait to have Ubuntu :) edit: This might be useful info. The USB is 16GB X-Stor Fat32. I used YUMI.

• Elevating Customer Experience through Enterprise Social Networking

  I am not sure about most people, but I really dislike automated call center routing systems. They are impersonal and convey a sense that the company I am dealing with does not see the value of providing customer service that increases positive perception of their brand. By the time I am connected with a live support representative I am actually more frustrated than before I originally dialed. Each time a company interacts with its customers or prospects there is an opportunity to enhance that relationship. Technical enablers like call center routing systems can be a double edged sword - providing process efficiencies, but removing the human context of some interactions that can build a lot of long term value and create substantial repeat business. Certain web systems, available through "chat with a representative" now links on some web sites, provide a quick and easy way to get in touch with someone and cut down on help desk calls, but miss the opportunity to deliver an even more personal experience to customers and prospects. As more and more users head to the web for self-service and product information, the quality of this interaction becomes critical to supporting a company's brand image and viability. It takes very little effort to go a step further and elevate customer experience, without adding significant cost through social enterprise software technologies. Enterprise Social Networking Social networking technologies have slowly gained footholds in the enterprise, evolving from something that people may have been simply curious about, to tools that have started to provide tangible value in the enterprise. Much like instant messaging, once considered a toy in the enterprise, expertise search, blogs as communications tools, wikis for tacit knowledge sharing are all seeing adoption in a way that is directly applicable to the business and quickly adding value. So where does social networking come in when trying to enhance customer experience?

• Dell e4300 Random Beeps

  I’ve noticed that my Dell e4300 Laptop will randomly beep every now and then. The symptoms are virtually identical to the issue described here: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19314488.aspx Any ideas why? I thought it might be related to hard drive activity so I downloaded the western digital disk utility and all tests check out fine. It’s not a big deal and it only beeps once every few days. I just want to make sure there isn’t a larger problem looming. =) -M

• Luminis and Google Apps Single Sign On

  We are a community college that is plodding forward with a Google Apps for Education implementation. There is support for Single Sign On and a fair amount of documentation for implementing it. We are looking to provide integration with our portal which is currently Luminis 3 (we are upgrading to Luminis 4 within a year). There is documentation available for Luminis specific integration, but apparently it is by request only. I have put the request in to SungardHE (where we license Luminis) and am waiting for a response. My questions are as follows... Is anyone here running Luminis? Have you tried to integrate it with a 3rd party email service like Google Apps for Education or Microsoft LiveEDU? If so, can you elaborate on implementation details above and beyond your Luminis installation and Google Apps setup? Looking for more of a general road map and differences between integration options with Luminis 3 and Luminis 4. Thanks!

• Backup to Synology NAS using rsync or NFS and hardlinks

  I want to backup data from a Windows (Vista) computer to a Synology NAS (210j). The NAS supports FTP, SMB, NFS and also allows a rsync daemon to be set up. I want to backup different folders to the NAS, but I'd prefer to use the hardlink method to save diskspace (like this script does). With this method, a new folder is created for every backup, but if the file already exists on the target, only a hardlink is created. The filesystem on the Synology device is ext3, so I probably can't use rsyncbackup, as it is made for NTFS. Is there another way to do this backup with hardlink support?

• The battery indicator& Power setting panel shows wrong battery state

  My laptop is Thinkpad E420 with Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit installed, the kernel version is 3.2.0-33-generic. I have set the battery threshold as 60% via windows7. It seems that the threshold auto effected in Ubuntu. However, there are some problems of the battery indicator's state. I'll list some information of the battery state as following: (Note that in terminal ubuntu says that battery charging state is charged, while the power setting panel shows that the battery state is charging as well as the battery indicator shows.) $ cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state present: yes capacity state: ok *charging state: charged* present rate: 0 mW remaining capacity: 18200 mWh present voltage: 16103 mV battery indicator state Power Setting Panel Is there any way to fix the problem? • Revocation status of DC can't be verified

  A Domain Controller within my forest was working fine (as the story usually goes). Then, suddenly, I can't logon with my smart card. Instead, I'm greeted with the following message: The system could not log you on. The revocation status of the domain controller certificate used for smart card authentication could not be determined. I literally have no idea what's happened here. As an attempted quick fix, I removed the root certificate which issued the Smart Card's certificate from the CA of both the client and DC. Then imported a newly exported one from the DC in question. Same issue. I've spotted a number of related articles on Microsoft's forums and a HP support document. Each don't really shed much light as it's a generic error message apparently. Having said all of this, other smart cards (issued from other DCs) work fine. So I have no idea what's up with this one.
