• i7 4770k or i7 4930k - Which for faster compile times? [on hold]

  I've looked up comparisons and found that single core performance seems to be better on i7 4770k, but has less cores that the i7 4930k. Would VS take advantage of extra cores when compiling, or would the difference be negible. I'm looking to buy the PC primarily for programming, so which would be better for visual studio? I already have the rest of my build ready, I just need to decide on this! :) thanks

Our application requires the ability to post messages to an MSMQ server To be clear we do not want to install MSMQ server on the machine. However we want to be able to post messages to a remote MSMQ server so we need to install the client parts of Windows Messaging. Has anybody succeeded in doing this?

• Is there a way to snapshot a running process to disk to restore it later?

  I usually work with a lot of instances of visual studio open to different projects, I was wondering if there is a way to snapshot/hibernate a running process to disk instead of closing it so that I can open it in the same state as it was quickly. I have a ton of free disk space so wouldn't mind saving the entire process snapshot if it would save me the time in opening up the solution and waiting for the projects to load.

• Script to restart server when no user is remotely connected

  I'm looking for something special : here is a windows server that is used for development by 4/5 people remotely working on it through remote control. I'm installing Visual Studio 2010 on it, and the installation won't continue until the server has been restarted. I'm looking for a way to reboot when the server is idle (when nobody is connected through remote desktop on it) so that the reboot doesn't bug anyone. Is there some software that can do that ?   Hello, I have been writing articles on the wordpress.com blog, now i am looking to move it to self-hosted wordpress blog but i wonder: 1) Should i move all my articles on the new blog or just put an article on my last blog that more articles will be posted on my new blog?* 2) If i move all articles on my new blog, i am not sure about how google will react to it because there are articles with good number of visitors, won't this be seo-un-friendly because i am not sure but google will re-create page reputation stuff, etc or those articles will have same popularity even if i move elsewhere?* 3) What are the implications and side-effects in moving from wordpress.com blog to self-hosted wordpress blog?* Thanks

  Hello. I'm building ASP.NET MVC2 application, and using Entity Framework as ORM. I am having troubles updating object in the database. Every time I try entity.SaveChanges(), EF inserts new line in the table, regardless of do I want update, or insert to be done. I tried attaching (like in this next example) object to entity, but then I got {"An object with a null EntityKey value cannot be attached to an object context."} Here's my simple function for inserts and updates (it's not really about vehicles, but it's simpler to explain like this, although I don't think that this effects answers at all)... public static void InsertOrUpdateCar(this Vehicles entity, Cars car) { if (car.Id == 0 || car.Id == null) { entity.Cars.AddObject(car); } else { entity.Attach(car); } entitet.SaveChanges(); } I even tried using AttachTo("Cars", car), but I got the same exception.   For my current project, we're using some CLR 2 based mixed mode assemblies. In order to use these from within a .NET 4 targetted assembly, I know you have to add useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy=true to the <startup> element within app.config. I understand that this changes the activation policy, causing these mixed-mode assemblies to be loaded using the highest supported version of the CLR. However, are there any side effects to doing this? What potential issues should I watch for when enabling the non-default activation policy?

• Ado.net performance:What does SNIReadSync do?

  We have a query that takes 2 seconds to run in Sql Server Management Studio but it takes 13 seconds to be shown on a client screen. I used dotTrace to profile my source code and noticed there is this SNIReadSync method (part of ADO.net assemblies)that takes a lot of time to do its job(9 seconds).I ran my source over server so I could omit the network effects and the result was the same. It doesn't matter if I'm using OleDBConnection or SqlConnection. It doesn't matter if I'm using a DataReader or a DataSet. Connection pooling does not solve this issue(as my result shows). • WPF DataGrid : CanContentScroll property causing odd behavior

  i have a solution where i generate a DataGrid (or multiple instances) based on user criteria.. each grid keeps receiving data as it comes in via ObservableCollection the problem i had, was that the scroll acted weird. It was choppy, and scrollbar would resize it self while scrolling. than i found.. CanContentScroll property! It completely fixes the weird scrolling behavior bringing me temporary bliss and happiness. however, it causes 2 unfortunate side effects. whenever i re-create grid instances and bind them to my observable collection, it freezes my entire window for 5 seconds. when my grid grows to a big size, this delay can last for 30 seconds. when i call TradeGrid.ScrollIntoView(TradeGrid.Items(TradeGrid.Items.Count - 1)) to scroll to the bottom, it jumps to bottom and than back to the top. is there another way to achieve smooth scrolling perhaps?

• How to debug manifest errors?

  I am creating an application that depends on third-party library, which in turn depends on MSVCP90D.dll (it was compiled with debug symbols). While starting the application it fails to start and provides an error message: I have found such library in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\redist\Debug_NonRedist\amd64\Microsoft.VC90.DebugCRT and C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\redist\Debug_NonRedist\x86\Microsoft.VC90.DebugCRT. As you can see one of them is 64-bit, while the other is 32-bit. When I have placed 32-bit into the directory of the application the application silently crashes while loading (log from Visual Studio Output window is below). With the 32-bit one I get another error message: If I press Abort -- programs shuts down, Retry results in breaking into debug session for crt0msg.c file. This is system file and I have no idea how to debug it. If I press Ignore I get yet another error message: So the question is how to debug such errors? Please give me some links where I can read more about it or point me out what exactly I should do in such cases. I know this relates to manifest problems -- please give me a good resource where I can read about resources, since what I have found have confused me even more. • C# Audio - How to time stretch (different tempo, same pitch)

  I'm trying to make a winform app in C# (VS2008) that can load an mp3 (other formats would be nice, but mp3 at a minimum) and be able to adjust the playback speed (tempo) without affecting pitch. I really don't need any other audio effects. I tried using DirectShow but that doesn't seem to offer time stretch capabilities. I was able to incorporate irrklang but that does not seem to have the time stretch capability either. So now I've moved on to SoundTouch. That certainly has the capabilities but I'm very unclear on how to implement in C#. After a few days of this, about all I've accomplished is using DLLImport on the SoundTouch DLL and am able to successfully retrieve a version number. At this point, I'm not even sure if I can do what I'm trying to do with SoundTouch. Can anyone offer some guidance either on how to implement SoundTouch or a different library with the capabilities that I'm looking for? Thank you.

  We develop mostly low traffic but highly specialized web applications. Normally we use L2S, EF or nHibernate as access layer and then throws Asp.Net MVC to it and in which for normal crud operations we query the ISession/DataContext directly but for more advanced functions/side effects we put it in a some kind of service layer. Now, i was think about publishing the data through OData (WCF Data Service) and query that from the controllers (or even from jQuery when the a good template engine shows up) and publish the service operations through a WCF service (or as custom methods on the WCF Data Service?). What advantages/disadvantages does this architecture poses? Do I gain something except higher complexity and latency? Better separations of concerns (or is it just a illusion)?

• Cannot change font size in Tk

  Hello, I'm trying, for the first time, to create a GUI in Ruby using Tk. I've copied a code snippet from one of the numerous web tutorials and try to change the font for one of the labels, but nothing seems to affect how the text is presented. Here's the code: require 'tk' root = TkRoot.new('title'=>'MCIS') defaultFont = TkFont.new("weight"=>'bold', "size"=>20) Lbl = TkLabel.new(root) do text "Boooo" borderwidth 5 font defaultFont foreground "red" relief "groove" grid('column'=>3, 'row'=>0) end Tk.mainloop() I see the effects of all the parameters of the label but not the font. I've tried to change the size, the weight, give different family names, leave just one parameter; nothing works - the font stays default as it was. Surprisingly it doesn't report any errors, everything looks fine. Maybe it's versions problem? I run these: Linux Centos 5 Tk 8.4.13 Ruby 1.8.5 ruby-tcltk 1.8.5 Also, don't know if it is important, I ran it via Xming from WinXP machine.

  I'm trying to make sure old url's aren't broken after the site's URL structure has changed from this: http://www.domain.com/section/entry_name to this: http://www.domain.com/section/event_name/entry_name But to make it a bit more complex, I'm using the segments to sort entries, for example: http://www.domain.com/news/amazing_event/date/asc http://www.domain.com/videos/my_event/title/desc The new structure only effects one particular event (amazing_event) and should leave the other URL's alone. Where do I even begin to tackle this?   In silverlight, I got a textbox which I want to be multiline and have mousescrolling available. If I only use textbox then I dont have mousescrolling. If I use a scrollviewer I will have mousescrolling. BUT everytime my writing exceeds the rows that are shown from start the text and caret just dissapears without the scrollviewer doing anything. How do I solve the problem so I get the caretposition effects the scrollviewer? I sofar not managed to find someone with the exact same problem as me.

• Setting the position within a spinner

  Good Afternoon, I have a spinner array containing 3 spinners. Each spinner is populated via a res string array. Each array contains the numbers 1-100. When the activity starts each spinner contains a string array of 1-100 and when you click on a spinner the first choice is 1. Say a user picks 25 on the first spinner. I'd like the 2nd spinner to show 25 as the starting point for scrolling when the spinner is clicked but not fire the spinner. The 2nd spinner would still contain the array 1-100 though so a user could scroll down to a lessor number if the wanted to. I've tried using setSelection but that causes the 2nd spinner to fire causing undesirable effects (an edit box is populated with the 2nd number even though the user hasn't clicked the 2nd spinner). I would like the 2nd spinner to just show 25 as the starting point. How do I do this?

  hi the catalyst speeds up the reaction but remains unchanged after the reaction has taken place i tried the following code breed [catalysts catalyst] breed [chemical-x chemical-x] ;then the forward reaction is sped up by the existence of catalysts to react-forward let num-catalysts count catalysts ;speed up by num-catalysts ;... end and it works fine but I want to make it so that the catalyst can be switched on and off with the 'switch' button ..so one can see the effects with and without the catalyst..i tried putting a switch in but catalyst has already been defined Also i want to make the catalyst visible so one can see it in the actual implementation (in the world) like making it a turtle is there are another way to implement this apart from using breeds i tried making the catalyst a turtle but it doesnt work ; Make catalyst visible in implementation clear-all crt catalysts 100 ask catalysts [ set color white ] show [breed] of one-of catalysts ; prints catalysts any help will be greatly appreciated thank you

  Which is the right/best tag to use in my HTML file when I want to display the Adobe PDF viewer? Right now I'm using the code below, but there are weird side effects (e.g. it seems to steal the starting focus that I've set to another INPUT text box; it doesn't seem to play real well with the jQueryUI Resizeable class; etc.) <embed src="abc.pdf" type="application/pdf" /> Could I even do the same thing with the OBJECT tag? Are there advantages/disadvantages to using one tag vs. the other?
