• Rails Plugin - Install as Plugin or Install As Gem

  Hey guys, I am new to rails and have a question regarding the plugins. It seems there are two approaches you can take when using a third party plugin in a ROR App: 1) install a gem using sudo gem install GEM, and then "require" it in your rails project 2) install the plugin using script/generate plugin install PLUGIN. The plugin in code appears in your vendor directory and then you are good to go (sometimes, i could not get Devise working via this method). Since it appears both of these methods accomplish them same thing, why should I choose one method over the other. Thanks,

• JDBC Realm: GlassFish v2.1 = OK; GlassFish v3 = fail with invaliduserreason

  In my J2EE 5 application I have a JDBC Realm based security with Form method. Encrypt method is MD5 as default. The database is PostgreSQL 8.4 installed locally (or 8.3 available via lan). My app used to work finely on GlassFish v2.1 server with PostgreSQL 8.3, but now I need to deploy it on GlassFish v3. I am absolutely sure I have done all the same config on GFv3 like creating Connection Pool (which pings with no problem), JDBC Resource and JDBC Realm. But on GFv3 I get login exception with "invaliduserreason" while the database schema is just created from the working database script. I have checked the data and entered login/password thousand times and it seems that data is all right. So where can I find the reason of unworking security? Please, advice. NetBeans 6.8 Thanks.

• Creating a castable entity class wrapper

  Hi I need to have a wrapper class that exposes some properties of my entity class called ProfileEntity. I tried doing it by deriving from this entity and then creating properties that return specific entity properties, but it says I cannot cast from ProfileEntity to ProfileEntityWrapper. When I try to put the return values of a method that returns a 'ProfileEntity' into the wrapper I get the above error. How do I create such a wrapper class that is castable?   Hello, I'd like to use jQuery UI autocomplete in order to load a list from my database but I don't know wich method I should use to do so. • UIScrollView strange zoom behavior when content is a UIView subclass

  Hi, I'm experiencing the following: I created a UIView subclass with a CATiledLayer as backing layer by overriding the layerClass method. The layer properties (delegate, tileSize, etc) are set in the initWithFrame: method of the subclass. +(Class)layerClass { return [CATiledLayer class]; } -(id)initWithFrame:(CGRect)frame { if(self = [super initWithFrame:frame]) { renderer = [[MFPDFRenderer alloc]init]; tiledLayer = (CATiledLayer *)[self layer]; [tiledLayer setFrame:frame]; [tiledLayer setLevelsOfDetail:2]; [tiledLayer setLevelsOfDetailBias:3]; [tiledLayer setTileSize:CGSizeMake(512, 512)]; [tiledLayer setDelegate:renderer]; } return self; } Then I add an instance of said class as the content of an UIScrollView and set UIScrollView properties and implement the required delegate's methods. Everything works fine but when zooming the scroll view keep repositioning itself on its center. It's hardly noticeable when zooming in the center of the content, but unbearable otherwise. The same scroll view works fine when I use as (zoomable) content any other view such as an UIImageView or even a normal UIView with a CATiledLayer with the same properties and delegate of the subclass implementation as sublayer. • setUserCredentials from Google data api is stuck

  Well, since I am facing some issues with OAuth implementation, I decided to go back to normal method where users will input their login id and password and I will use them in my code to validate their google account to fetch calendar information. So when user enters login id and password, the page is getting stuck. When I check the code, setUserCredentials is the method where it is getting stuck. But when I enter my login id and password and debug on development site, it works fine. There is no problem when I debug. And importantly , the problem appears for first time only, once I debug the code and next time I try it without breakpoint, it works fine. Does anyone know why setUserCredentials takes time or any way I can track why it is taking so time? I have asked the same question on Google data api forum, but nobody answered it.

• RPX API Call auth_info is returning "missing parameter" error

  I cannot get the RPX auth_info API call to work. It keeps returning the error: "Missing parameter: apiKey" I am using the C# RPX Helper Class provided on their Wiki:RPX Helper Class Below is my code in my Page_Load method. The RPX service works by sending a POST to a Url that I specify. My code gets the token from the post data shown below. Then I call the AuthInfo API method. string token = Request.Params["token"]; string apiKey = "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx"; //my API key Rpx rpx = new Rpx(apiKey, "http://rpxnow.com"); XmlElement xmlElement = rpx.AuthInfo(token); Everything looks good. The token is populated. Within their code, the "apiKey" value pair is added to the post data written to the Request stream. Has anyone had luck with this? Any ideas why this is not working? Thanks.

• iPhone - Is it ok to override UITableViewCell setSelected:animated

  I am drawing custom UITableViewCells. My cells are opaque and are completely drawn in the drawRect of the cell to help with performance. I want to handle the look of a selected cell myself. If I don't, then the contents of my cell is covered up by the selectedBackgroundView that is added. Is it common or acceptable to override the setSelected:animated method of my cell so this is done properly. I guess if I did that, then I would not call the super's setSelected method since I would be handling how the cell will show that its selected. I would also have to set the selected property of the cell. Any help would be great. Thanks.

• MVC - Calling Controller Methods

  Hello, My application is following the MVC design pattern. The problem I keep running into is needing to call methods inside a Controller class from outside that Controller class (ex. A View class wants to call a Controller method, or a Manager class wants to call a Controller method). Is calling Controller methods in this way allowed in MVC? If it's allowed, what's the proper way to do it? According to the version of MVC that I am following (there seems to be so many different versions out there), the View knows of the Model, and the Controller knows of the View. • linq Except and custom IEqualityComparer

  I'm trying to implement a custom comparer on two lists of strings and use the .Except() linq method to get those that aren't one one of the lists. The reason I'm doing a custom comparer is because I need to do a "fuzzy" compare, i.e. one string on one list could be embedded inside a string on the other list. I've made the following comparer ` public class ItemFuzzyMatchComparer : IEqualityComparer { bool IEqualityComparer<string>.Equals(string x, string y) { return (x.Contains(y) || y.Contains(x)); } int IEqualityComparer<string>.GetHashCode(string obj) { if (Object.ReferenceEquals(obj, null)) return 0; return obj.GetHashCode(); } } ` When I debug, the only breakpoint that hits is in the GetHashCode() method. The Equals() never gets touched. Any ideas?

There is a web page in my ASP.NET application which need to show a lot images to the end user and i want to handle browser's requests for images through a IHttpAsyncHandler. I found a similer post on codeproject "Asynchronous HTTP Handler for Asynchronous BLOB DataReader." But for some reasons, page get freeze upon completion of "BeginProcessRequest" method and "EndProcessRequest" method never get call. Can anyone look at this post and let me know whats wrong in that post? OR what i need to do to complete this task (BLOB Reading via IHttpAsyncHandler)?

• Challenge: Neater way of currying or partially applying C#4's string.Join

  Background I recently read that .NET 4's System.String class has a new overload of the Join method. This new overload takes a separator, and an IEnumerable<T> which allows arbitrary collections to be joined into a single string without the need to convert to an intermediate string array. Cool! That means I can now do this: var evenNums = Enumerable.Range(1, 100) .Where(i => i%2 == 0); var list = string.Join(",",evenNums); ...instead of this: var evenNums = Enumerable.Range(1, 100) .Where(i => i%2 == 0) .Select(i => i.ToString()) .ToArray(); var list = string.Join(",", evenNums); ...thus saving on a conversion of every item to a string, and then the allocation of an array. The Problem However, being a fan of the functional style of programming in general, and method chaining in C# in particular, I would prefer to be able to write something like this: var list = Enumerable.Range(1, 100) .Where(i => i%2 == 0) .string.Join(","); This is not legal C# though. The closest I've managed to get is this: var list = Enumerable.Range(1, 100) .Where(i => i%2 == 0) .ApplyTo( Functional.Curry<string, IEnumerable<object>, string> (string.Join)(",") ); ...using the following extension methods: public static class Functional { public static TRslt ApplyTo<TArg, TRslt>(this TArg arg, Func<TArg, TRslt> func) { return func(arg); } public static Func<T1, Func<T2, TResult>> Curry<T1, T2, TResult>(this Func<T1, T2, TResult> func) { Func<Func<T1, T2, TResult>, Func<T1, Func<T2, TResult>>> curried = f => x => y => f(x, y); return curried(func); } } This is quite verbose, requires explicit definition of the parameters and return type of the string.Join overload I want to use, and relies upon C#4's variance features because we are defining one of the arguments as IEnumerable rather than IEnumerable.   jCarousel documentation states the following: By passing the callback function itemLoadCallback as configuration option, you are able to dynamically create (li) items for the content. {...} jCarousel contains a convenience method add() that can be passed the index of the item to create and the innerHTML string of the item to be created. My Question: Is it possible to remove all items and rebind to a new collection? BTW: I don't necessarily need a "convenience method" to do this. I'm very open to workarounds. FYI: This strategy doesn't seem to work.

• What is the difference among NSString alloc:initWithCString versus stringWithUTF8String?

  I thought these two methods were (memory allocation-wise) equivalent, however, I was seeing "out of scope" and "NSCFString" in the debugger if I used what I thought was the convenient method (commented out below) and when I switched to the more explicit method my code stopped crashing! Notice that I am getting the string that is being stored in my container from sqlite3 query. p = (char*) sqlite3_column_text (queryStmt, 1); // GUID = (NSString*) [NSString stringWithUTF8String: (p!=NULL) ? p : ""]; GUID = [[NSString alloc] initWithCString:(p!=NULL) ? p : "" encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding]; Also note, that if I looked at the values in the debugger and printed them with NSLog they looked correct, however, I don't think new memory was allocated and the value copied. Instead the memory pointer was stored - went out of scope - referenced later - crash!

  VB.NET .NET 3.5 I have an aggregate class called Package as part of a shipping system. Package contains another class, BoxType . BoxType contains information about the box used to ship the package, such as length, width, etc. of the Box. Package has a method called GetShippingRates. This method calls a separate helper class, ShipRater, and passes the Package itself as an argument. ShipRater examines the Package as well as the BoxType, and returns a list of possible shipping rates/methods. What I would like to do is construct an Interface, IRateable, that would be supplied to the helper class ShipRater. If I write an interface IRateable, then how can I use the BoxType properties to implement part of the Interface? Is this possible?

For example, when this happens, there are no indications that the nodes in the cluster ever had an issue with the request (there is nothing in the logs on either node that indicate any timeout or failure). Also, I enabled the trace on the driver, which gives you some nice autotrace (ala Oracle) info as long as the query succeeds. But in this case, the driver blows a NoHostAvailableException and no ExecutionInfo is available, so tracing has not provided any benefit in this case. I also find it interesting that this does not seem to be recorded as a timeout (my JMX consoles tell me no timeouts have occurred). So, I am left not understanding WHERE the failure is actually occurring. I am left with the idea that it is the driver that is having a problem, but I don't know how to debug it (and I would really like to). I have read several posts from folks that state that query'g for resultSets 10000 rows is probably not a good idea, and I am willing to accept this, but I would like to understand what is causing the exception and where the exception is happening. FWIW, I also tried bumping the timeout properties in the cassandra.yaml, but this made no difference whatsoever. I welcome any suggestions, anecdotes, insults, or monetary contributions for my registration in the house of moron-developers. Regards!!

  I want to unit test the custom init method of a class that inherits from NSURLConnection -- how would I do this if the init of my testable class invokes NSURLConnection's initWithRequest? I'm using OCMock and normally, I can mock objects that are contained within my test class. • C Programming: malloc and free within a loop

  Hi all, I just started out with C and have very little knowledge about performance issues with malloc() and free(). My question is as such: if I were to call malloc() followed by free() in a while-loop that loops for, say, 20 times, would it run slower compared to if I were to call free() outside the loop? I am actually using the first method to allocate memory to a buffer, read a string of variable length in a file, perform some string operation, and then clear the buffer after every iteration. If my method results in a lot of overhead then I'd like to ask for a better way for me to achieve the same results. Sorry for my bad English. Thanks and regards, K

  Hi, I'm trying to convert this c code(http://nashruddin.com/OpenCV_Eye_Detection) to the python code, but in c style, he used cvROI thing, since ROI functions are not supported by python-opencv, I tried cvGetSubRect so Here is the eye detection part of the code : eye_region = cvGetSubRect(image,cvRect(face.x,int(face.y + (face.height/4)),face.width,int(face.height/2))) eyes = cvHaarDetectObjects(eye_region,eyeCascade,memo,1.15,3,0,cvSize(25,15)) for e in eyes: cvRectangle(image, cvPoint( int(e.x), int(e.y)), cvPoint(int(e.x + e.width), int(e.y + e.height)), CV_RGB(0, 255, 0), 1, 8, 0) return image; When I run this code, It draws rectangles irrelevant places. I thought, eye_region coordinates are wrong, and tried some coordinates, but it didn't work. Any idea ? Note :Face detection method works very well, and it's code is same with the eye detection method.
