• My colleague can't visit our website through her provider after long downtime

  We did a frontpage update some days ago that caused the site to crash. The site was down for several hours. After troubleshooting, we concluded that we needed to cache more content. It had been run too many queries. After solving that and rebooting of server, we here in Sweden and Norway were again able to visit the site. But a colleague in Tunisia couldn't. It seems to work from another internet provider but not her own. What could have happened? And what should we do? Edit: I should add: She is able to visit the site through tunnel at anonymouse.org.

• Should I index my mobile duplicate of my desktop website on google?

  I have a duplicate of http://he.thenamestork.com with the url http://he.thenamestork.com/mobile - all files are duplicated while the mobile version has a slightly different content. Notice that when I write 'mobile' I only mean regular HTML4 with smartphone friendly CSS. I have a series of redirects (using .htaccess) that allows smartphone users land directly on the mobile versions. But I wonder, shound I index the mobile version as well so those users will be able to get direct, faster links? And what is the proper way of doing that without causing problem in google search? I guess I'm asking if there's a way to get google display regular urls for desktop users and ../mobile/.. urls for smartphone users, and if it is smart SEOwise.

• What is the advantage to hosting static resources on a separate domain?

  I notice a lot of sites host their resources on a separate domain from the main site, e.g. StackExchange using sstatic.net, Barnes & Noble using imagesbn.com, etc. I understand that there are benefits to putting your static resources on a separate host, possibly with an efficient static-file web server like nginx, freeing up the main server to focus on serving dynamic content. Similarly, outsourcing to a shared CDN like cloudfront Akamai is logical. What is the benefit to using a separate domain otherwise, though? Why sstatic.net instead of static.stackexchange.com? Update: Several answers miss the core question. I understand that there is benefit to splitting between multiple hosts — parallel downloads, slimmer web server, etc. But what is more elusive is why multiple domains. Why sstatic.net rather than static.stackexchange.com as the host for shared resources? So far, only one answer has addressed that.

• Optimizing data downloaded via 'link' media queries and asynchronous loading

  I have a website that tries to make sensible use of media queries and avoid 'expensive' CSS for users of mobile devices. My eventual goal is to make it 'mobile-first' but for now, since it is based on Twitter Bootstrap it isn't. I included some background images (Base64 encoded) and styles that would only apply to "full-size" browsers in a separate stylesheet loaded asynchronously via modernizr.load. In Firefox (but not webkit browsers) it makes it so that if you navigate away from the homepage and then return, the content (specifically, all those extras) 'blinks' when it finishes loading...or maybe I should say reloading. If, instead of using modernizr.load, I include that stylesheet via a link... in the head with a media query attribute will it prevent the data from being downloaded by non-matching browsers (mobile, based on screensize) that it is inapplicable to?

• Does heavy JavaScript use adversely impact Googleability?

  I've been developing the client-side for my web-app in JavaScript. The JavaScript can communicate with my server over REST (HTTP)[JSON, XML, CSV] or RPC (XML, JSON). I'm writing writing this decoupled client in order to use the same code for both my main website and my PhoneGap mobile apps. However recently I've been worrying that writing the website with almost no static content would prevent search-engines (like Google) from indexing my web-page. I was taught about this restriction about 4 years ago, which is why I'm asking here, to see if this restriction is still in-place. Does heavy JavaScript use adversely impact Googleability?

  A blog post along the lines of "your wishes are our command". ADF developers are hopefully aware of our ADF Insider Essentials recordings, a page full of presentations from small to large topics on all-things-ADF.  A couple of customers have pointed out these recordings aren't accessible via the iPad and other Apple OSX devices thanks to the recordings being wrapped in an Adobe Flash applet. • How to disable automatic login?

  I was playing around with "User accounts" and somehow set automatic login. Now, when I start my PC, it just has one button named as "login". Clicking that button, directly logs me in to my PC. There is no music or no asking for password while logging in. As a side effect, it asks me separately for keyring password How to disable auto login and make login/keyring password unified again like before? NOTE: Attempting to disable Automatic Login from System Settings User Accounts does not work. • Alternatives for saving data with jquery

  I am not sure if this question is considered too broad, but I would like to reach out to my fellow programmers to see what alternatives are out there for saving data using jquery. I have a content management system that generates an set of HTML pages called an IETM (Interactive Electronic Technical Manual). The HTML pages are written in HTML and uses jquery. The ITEM is meant to be light weight, portable and run on most modern browsers. I am looking for a way to save data. I have considered cookies and sqlite. Are there any other alternatives for saving data using jquery?

• Google Sites page never shows up in Google Search organic results?

  I use Google Sites (i.e.: https://sites.google.com/site/EXAMPLE/ ) as a convenient way to maintain up-to-date info on several residential properties, info that's often requested by my property agents, its been around for about 1 year, but I still can never get it to appear in organic Google search results or Bing, even if I search the specific keywords such as the street names. I submitted the URL manually to search engines, knowing that my Sites page probably has very few incoming links. Is this expected behavior? The content of my page has simple formatted text, and outgoing links to Picasa/G+/imgur photo albums. Am I doing something wrong or do all GoogleSites pages have poor organic search rank? • South African MVPs deserve their title.

  Recently I read a post by someone who felt the Microsoft MVP program had failed. My local experience with the MVP program would tend for me to disagree. On Saturday I attended a free Windows Phone 7 event organized by Robert MacLean and Rudi Grobler both of whom are local MVP’s. First of all, kudos to them for organizing the event which included a free lunch and flash stick and had some great content for a free event. Secondly, this is not the first time that either of these two MVP’s have organized events. They are active in the community, present at the majority of local events and are always approachable and give an “honest” opinion. For me, that is what an MVP stands for and at least in my region I feel that the MVP program is a real success.

• GUI question : representing large tree

  I have a tree-like datastructure of some six levels deep, that I would like to represent on a single webpage (can be tabs, trees; ....) In each level both childnodes and content are possible. Presenting it like a real tree would be not very usable (too big). I was thinking in the lines of hiding parts of the tree when you drill down and presenting a breadcrumbs or the like to keep you informed as to where you are... • Using an old penalized domain for a new website

  I had a website with 2 domains like these: firstdomain.com and first-domain.com. The main domain was first-domain.com and the other one was 301 redirected to first one. The main domain got a Google Penguin penalty some months ago. I uploaded the site on an new domain and removed Google index of old domain by using the remove URL tool in Webmaster Tools. Now, I want to use firstdomain.com (which was redirected to the penalized domain) for a new and fresh website with new and perfect content. Is it probable that history of this domain affects the new website and harms its ranking?

• Dolphin search bar missing. How can i get it back?

  A while ago, my search bar went missing in dolphin. If the search toolbar is checked for view/unhide, nothing shows up. I noticed if i check and uncheck the button to hide/unhide it, a small, thin content-less bar slightly pushes the rest of the toolbar up. i tried reconfiguring with dpkg, purging and reinstalling, etc. i left it alone as i thought it would be fixed in an update, but today i upgraded daolphin and it's still gone. any thoughts?

• Which JavaScript carousel zooms blocks from the playlist?

  I saw a carousel/slider for displaying featured content a while ago that does something that most don't. It started fairly simply, with the top feature large, and a playlist to the side of other featured stories: Feature 1 then began to slide towards the bottom right, while feature 2 moved to occupy the main slot, and the previews of features 3 and 4 moved up: The slider had now completed a whole swap, and was ready to do the same thing with feature 3. My Google-fu seems to be lacking in finding this again; does anyone know of this slider? I think it was based on one of the frameworks, but I'm not sure whether it was jQuery or one of the others.

• I have a large number of links on every page, for design reasons I want to keep it but is it hurting my SEO

  The site is http://www.centralsaddlery.co.uk We have other issues which we are tackling in terms of content etc but the question I have is: "Is my main navigation hurting us in SEO?" Its a lot of links and it's on a lot of pages. If so - what is a way to get google to ignore links below the top level. I had thought google would see that the links are hidden by default and only shown on hover but I can't verify this at all. We absolutely want to keep the menu, our customers like it and so do we - we think it is pretty usable as we have a lot of products to look at. Any advice is appreciated (and any tips for any part of the SEO are welcome too)

• 301 redirects mirrored domain

  I'm redesigning a site for a friend on my localhost. His old site is an .asp based site and we're replacing it with a WordPress site on LAMP hosting. The old site sits on domain A and also has another domain, domain B parked on top of it mirroring it. Google has picked up domain B for most of his search engine results and yahoo and bing etc have picked up domain A. The plan is to 301 redirect the the old pages of his site on domain A to the new WordPress versions and park domain B on top of it like before. My question is, will this work, if not what would be a better way to approach it? We'd prefer not to lose any of the search engine listings in the redesign, and the search engines don't appear to have penalized him for duplicate content. Thanks very much in advance!

• Website falsely blocked because of spam. Does anyone know how we should proceed?

  I'm responsible for ICT at FOS Open Scouting, a belgian scouting organisation. Our website was hacked a few years back and blocked by Facebook as a result. After we regained control over the site Facebook continued to block our domain and this is causing us a number of problems. We have tried many times in the past year to contact Facebook using their 'I am blocked from adding content' form (https://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=block_appeal) to no avail. • Is it possible for a web-server to send more files than requested for, and have the browser accept them?

  I've created a basic web server for a school project, and it serves static content without a problem. I thought of having the server parse all htm/html files for links to .js/.css/image files, and send these files to the client without these files being requested by the client later. eg. The browser requests: index.htm The server responds with intex.htm and image.jpg I modified the server to send two distinct http responses for a "GET /index.html HTTP1.1" (one for the html page and one for the image), but the browser ended up requesting the image when it was good and ready. Is there any way to bypass this? (use a multipart response, perhaps) Will these files be accepted by most browsers, or will they be rejected for security reasons?
