• Best strategies for reading J code

  I've been using J for a few months now, and I find that reading unfamiliar code (e.g. that I didn't write myself) is one of the most challenging aspects of the language, particularly when it's in tacit. After a while, I came up with this strategy: 1) Copy the code segment into a word document 2) Take each operator from (1) and place it on a separate line, so that it reads vertically 3) Replace each operator with its verbal description in the Vocabulary page 4) Do a rough translation from J syntax into English grammar 5) Use the translation to identify conceptually related components and separate them with line breaks 6) Write a description of what each component from (5) is supposed to do, in plain English prose 7) Write a description of what the whole program is supposed to do, based on (6) 8) Write an explanation of why the code from (1) can be said to represent the design concept from (7). Although I learn a lot from this process, I find it to be rather arduous and time-consuming -- especially if someone designed their program using a concept I never encountered before. So I wonder: do other people in the J community have favorite ways to figure out obscure code? If so, what are the advantages and disadvantages of these methods?

• How do I determine the coordinates of controls in a WM_INITDIALOG message?

  I am having troubles to determine the (what I believe to be the) client coordinates of a (radio button) control in the WM_INITDIALOG message of a DlgProc. Here's what I try: // Retrieve coordinates of Control with respect to the screen. RECT rectOrthoButton; GetWindowRect(GetDlgItem(hWnd, IDC_ORTHO), &rectOrthoButton); // Translate coordinates to more useful coordinates: those that // are used on the dialog. // In order to do the translation we have to find the top left // point (coordinates) of the dialog's client: POINT dlgTopLeft; ClientToScreen(hWnd, &dlgTopLeft); // With these coordinates we can do the translation. // We're only interested in top and left, so we skip // bottom and right: rectOrthoButton.top -= dlgTopLeft.y; rectOrthoButton.left -= dlgTopLeft.x; use_top_and_left(rectOrthoButton.top, rectOrthoButton.left); I expected rectOrthoButton.top and .left to be the top left coordinates of my control with respect to the dialog's client area. It turns out they aren't and I am not sure what they point to as rectOrthoButton.left is equal to -40.

• Android map performance with > 800 overlays of KML data

  I have some a shape file which I have converted to a KML file that I wish to read coordinates from and then draw paths between the coordinates on a MapView. With the help of this great post: How to draw a path on a map using kml file? I have been able to read the the KML into an ArrayList of "Placemarks". This great blog post then showed how to take a list of GeoPoints and draw a path: http://djsolid.net/blog/android---draw-a-path-array-of-points-in-mapview The example in the above post only draws one path between some points however and since I have many more paths than that I am running into some performance problems. I'm currently adding a new RouteOverlay for each of the separate paths. This results in me having over 800 overlays when they have all been added. This has a performance hit and I would love some input on what I can do to improve it. Here are some options I have considered: Try to add all the points to a List which then can be passed into a class that will extend Overlay. In that new class perhaps it would be possible to add and draw the paths in a single Overlay layer? I'm not sure on how to implement this though since the paths are not always intersecting and they have different start and end points. At the moment I'm adding each path which has several points to it's own list and then I add that to an Overlay. That results in over 700 overlays... Simplify the KML or SHP. Instead of having over 700 different paths, perhaps there is someway to merge them into perhaps 100 paths or less? Since alot of paths are intersected at some point it should be possible to modify the original SHP file so that it merges all intersections. Since I have never worked with these kinds of files before I have not been able to find a way to do this in GQIS. If someone knows how to do this I would love for some input on that.   I am using PuTTY's command line utility psftp.exe to transfer files between a UTF8-configured linux server and a MS Windows PC. File names containing non ASCII characters (e.g., Japanese kana) are corrupted when using the 'ls' or 'get' commands of the psftp utility. I tried to create a saved session from putty.exe with the translation set to UTF8, and use that saved session from psftp.exe (i.e., open saved_session_with_UTF8_translation), but the filename characters were still corrupted. How can I configure psftp.exe so that it uses the right charset for the file names?

• Creating a DNS Server

  OK, I am a complete newbie to all this, so please bear with me. I want to create a DNS Server (like Google does - 8.8.8.8). I understand that a DNS Server is a Server that gives a IP on being given a hostname, ie. when I ask it what is the IP of google.com, it says "64.233.160.0". So, what I want to do is create a similar one that holds records of what translates to what. I thought of this since it looks to be similar to a webserver - ask for a page and it gives back the page. That is, when my machine has the IP xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and people chose xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx as their Primary DNS Server, then when they ask "www.google.com", I sould be able to tell "64.233.160.0". So, how do I create this DNS Server that is accessible to everyone in the world ? It would be easier if we have something like EasyPHP which is the analogue to a webserver here. I am sorry if I have caused any trauma because this might seem rubbish to experts ;) Adhityaa

• Why does ping flooding a domain name freezes and not a direct ip address

  I am wondering why, when ping flooding a domain, the ping flood freezes after a couple of seconds then continues and this freeze, unfreeze continues until i stop the ping flood. When i do the same using the ip it does not freeze. NEVER. i did for example sudo ping -f IP (It does not freeze) then i did sudo ping -f DomainName (It freezes after a couple of seconds) Why does ping flooding an IP not freezes and ping flooding the same place using the domain name does freeze. EDIT - What i mean about freezing is that the behavior of the ping flood should send a ping and create a dot (.) for each ping but also remove each dot (.) after receiving the echo request. Looks something like this: .......... <-- This means you just send 10 ping requests. If the requests are answer, for each request answer a dot is removed. The freeze happens when this is sending or receiving. The dots will stay there frozen, like is not receiving or sending any packets. For the PING FLOOD. I do not mean in the evil way of flooding a place, i mean in the testing way. To test the performance/speed of the request send and answered of the ping requests. If you send a ping flood to google's IP for about 10 seconds you would have send about 1000 packets.but if you do it to google's domain name (google.com) it will create the freeze am talking about. IMPORTANT - Do not confuse with flooding a site with ping of death attacks.

  Hello, I just enabled some Gmail Labs programs in my Gmail account, and then I noticed the orange triangle icon with an exclamation mark in it at the end of the address bar of my Google Chrome browser. Clicking on it brought forth a "Security Information' dialog box, with the following messages: "--mail.google.com The identity of website has been verified by Thawlte SGC CA. --Your connection to mail.google.com is encrypted with 128-bit encryption. However, this page includes other resources which are not secure. These resources can be viewed by others while in transit, and can be modified by an attacker to change the look or behavior of the page." I then logged into two of my other Gmail accounts, one of which has no Gmail Labs programs enabled, and the other with 1 program enabled quite some time ago, both with the same result as above (i.e., with the appearance of the orange triangle warning sign in the address bar). I don't remember seeing the orange triangle before, but I'm not sure if it has ever appeared or not. I have "Always use https" enabled for my Gmail accounts. My questions are: Is there a way to identify and remove these un-secure "resources"? (Could enabling Gmail Labs programs have brought these on?) Meanwhile, are my Gmail accounts compromised and unsafe to use? If so, what should I being doing about that now? After this problem is solved, would I need to reset the password to my Gmail accounts, and/or take any other measures to restore their security? Many thanks for answering my questions!

Infected PCs running the DNSChanger malware at unawares are in the danger of going offline on this coming Monday (July 9) when the FBI plans to pull down the online servers that communicate with the virus on host computers. After gaining access to a host PC, the DNSChanger virus tries to modify the DNS (Domain Name Server) settings, which are essential for Internet access, to send traffic to malicious servers. These poisoned web addresses in turn point traffic generated through infected PCs to fake or unsafe websites, most of them running online scams. There are also reports that the DNSChanger virus also acts as a trojan, allowing perpetrators of the hack attack to gain access to infected PCs. Google issued a general advisory for netizens in May earlier this year to detect and remove DNSChanger from infected PCs. According to our report, some 5 lakh PCs were still infected by the DNSChanger virus in May 2012. The first report of the DNSChanger virus and its affiliation with an international group of hackers first came to light towards the end of last year, and the FBI has been chasing them down ever since. The group behind the DNSChanger virus is estimated to have infected close to 4 million PCs around the world in 2011, until the FBI shut them down in November. • Need to get SMTP server on MS Server 2003

  Long story short, client paid networking company to move their website in house. Now I have to figure out how to email out from their website even though they don't have an SMTP server. At least until I install one. Their email is hosted with Gmail right now (the client's domain through Google App for Your Domain). I changed my code to connect as one of their users "[email protected]" and send email. Worked great for about 12 hours. All of a sudden none of the automated emails are going out now, and google is sending the emails back saying that it is a permanent failure and Message Rejected. The link they direct me to, http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=69585 is telling me that our emails look like spam. They aren't. They are emails we send to out clients about the status of their applications. Seriously, they are NOT spam. So...long story short is out the window, sorry...but I need to get an SMTP server setup inside their domain that I can send emails out of. This thing won't need to receive emails ever, and really only needs 1 email account customercare. What can I do? Will I have to have the networking company open a port in the firewall? Is there one built into Server 2003?

• Win8/7/XP print spooler not getting along with Zebra ZT230 via WIFI

  I have a graphics-intensive 4"x6" label I'm printing to the ZT230. I'm printing multiple (10) copies. When connected via USB, all goes well. However, when connected via wifi, I only get 2 of the labels. A wireshark capture shows that at some point in the process my computer (presumably my windows spooler) is sending a reset packet, which, I believe, would pretty much kill the print job. I'm getting the same results on Win8, Win7 and WinXP. The print job was originally generated on Zebra's ZebraDesigner2 software. For easier diagnosis, I captured it to a .prn file.
