• Branching strategy for frequent releases

  We have very frequent releases and we use Git for version control. When i am mentioning about frequency, please assume it to include bug-fixes and feature release too. All releases are eventually merged into ‘mainline’. When a release is deployed on production and if a bug is identified, people start fixing the bug on the same branch from which the latest release was deployed on production. They do not create a new bug-fix branch for the same. I feel that’s not the right way to go for. There are several components and each component has a different owner, and thus, different perspective. Though I have not initiated talks with them, I am sure there will be a lot of resistance. Main issue that they might cite would be, “There’s a lot of work involved in creating and tracking branches especially when there are so frequent deployments on production. This will consume a lot of dev effort.” Do you think that fixing bug on the same branch from which release was done, a good idea? If yes, how do you manage it? Using tags? I know that best practices may not always be applicable due to several factors but still I would like to know what might be a good approach for branching in a scenario where releases/bug-fixes happen almost on a daily basis.

• Programs minimized for long time takes long time to "wake up"

  I'm working in Photoshop CS6 and multiple browsers a lot. I'm not using them all at once, so sometimes some applications are minimized to taskbar for hours or days. The problem is, when I try to maximize them from the taskbar - it sometimes takes longer than starting them! Especially Photoshop feels really weird for many seconds after finally showing up, it's slow, unresponsive and even sometimes totally freezes for minute or two. It's not a hardware problem as it's been like that since always on all on my PCs. Would I also notice it after upgrading my HDD to SDD and adding RAM (my main PC holds 4 GB currently)? Could guys with powerful pcs / macs tell me - does it also happen to you? I guess OSes somehow "focus" on active software and move all the resources away from the ones that run, but are not used. Is it possible to somehow set RAM / CPU / HDD priorities or something, for let's say, Photoshop, so it won't slow down after long period of inactivity?

• Which tools should be used for data migration between environments?

  Ø  With the Oracle Utilities Application Framework based products there are a number of tools provided that can be used to transfer data from one environment to another. Ø  There are three main tools that implementations use: §  ConfigLab - A configurable copy facility is metadata aware and therefore understands the relationships between objects and by invoking the relevant maintenance objects validates the data copied. This utility uses the object validation to help ensure data integrity. Basically it is a set of configuration tables and a set of batch jobs to perform the migration of data. §  Bundling - A configurable release management tool that allows exporting of Advanced Configuration Environment based objects (business services, business objects, UI Maps etc) from one environment to another. §  Blueprint - An Oracle Utilities Software Development Kit (SDK) based tool to import metadata from the development environment to your initial testing environment. The utility is command line based and basically uses a text based configuration file to drive the utility on the source and target sides. Ø  Each tool has a role in an implementation but you must be careful to use the right tool for the right job within an implementation. The suggestions are as follows: §  Only use the Blueprint tool for migrating data from your development platform to your initial test environment. The blueprint tool is not designed to move large amounts of data and certainly is risky, if not used correctly, and can potentially break the integrity of your data. §  The SDK provides the configuration data that it is used for (mainly meta-data). This should not be extended as, while it can perform data migration on any data, it is not efficient and risky for certain types of configuration data. • GlassFish Server 3.1.2.2 Maven Coordinates

  GlassFish Server 3.1.2.2 was released a few weeks ago. This micro release fixed a couple of important bugfixes - one in JAX-WS (JAX-WS-1059) and another one related to JK listener with Apache + mod_ajp_proxy (GLASSFISH-18446). This release is already integrated in NetBeans 7.2 and you can download separately from here. Maven coordinates for this build are now also described on the download page. • Minimize useless tweaking of a numeric app

  I'm developing a numeric application (nonlinear optimizer), with a zillion knobs to tweak and rising. It's not my first foray into this domain, but this time there are even more variables in the code and I'm on a tight schedule. Don't want to waste time fiddling. Days or even months can potentially be wasted adjusting variables, recompiling, and reprocessing benchmark datasets. The resulting data is viewed and trouble spots are checked. The overall quality of the solution is reported by the program but the meaning of the report could change over time. (Numeric units for the report are one thing I'm trying to nail down.) One main problem is organizing result files to identify each with specific code changes. Note taking can be a pain, is there software to help with this? Are there agreed best practices to making this kind of development cycle reliably move forward? The solver package converges to its optimal solution with mechanical determination, but I'm all too familiar with the way an excess of design decisions can mire development.

• Column order can matter

  Ordinarily, column order of a SQL statement does not matter. Select a,b,c from table will produce the same execution plan as   Select c,b,a from table However, sometimes it can make a difference.   Consider this statement (maxdop is used to make a simpler plan and has no impact to the main point):   select SalesOrderID, CustomerID, OrderDate, ROW_NUMBER() over (Partition By CustomerId order by OrderDate asc) as RownAsc, ROW_NUMBER() over (Partition By CustomerId order by OrderDate Desc) as RownDesc from sales.SalesOrderHeader order by CustomerID,OrderDateoption(maxdop 1) If you look at the execution plan, you will see similar to this That is three sorts.  One for RownAsc,  one for RownDesc and the final one for the ‘Order by’ clause.  Sorting is an expensive operation and one that should be avoided if possible.  So with this in mind, it may come as some surprise that the optimizer does not re-order operations to group them together when the incoming data is in a similar (if not exactly the same) sorted sequence.  A simple change to swap the RownAsc and RownDesc columns to produce this statement : select SalesOrderID, CustomerID, OrderDate, ROW_NUMBER() over (Partition By CustomerId order by OrderDate Desc) as RownDesc , ROW_NUMBER() over (Partition By CustomerId order by OrderDate asc) as RownAsc from Sales.SalesOrderHeader order by CustomerID,OrderDateoption(maxdop 1) Will result a different and more efficient query plan with one less sort. The optimizer, although unable to automatically re-order operations, HAS taken advantage of the data ordering if it is as required.  This is well worth taking advantage of if you have different sorting requirements in one statement. Try grouping the functions that require the same order together and save yourself a few extra sorts.

  I am having a particular nasty problem of my main system drive 'disappearing' all of the sudden while the system is running. The vendor somewhat knows about this but has not managed to fix it completely over multiple fw iterations. Problems I have with the support is that I cannot provide any particular system log files/entries to further analyse what might have been going on because, well - windows cannot write to its 'lost' drive before bsod'ing. Is there any way to configure where Windows 7 stores its event logs so that I could specify a second physical hdd?

  I want to record the 8 separate Line IN Channels from my M-Audio Delta 1010 Card. The card is recogniced nicely and a can record a single channel via arecord -d 10 -f cd -t wav -D channel1 out2.wav. I've set up the different channels in ~/.asoundrc. Now if I want to record a second channel in parallel (arecord -d 10 -f cd -t wav -D channel2 out2.wav) I get the error arecord: main:564: audio open error: Device or resource busy As I understand the delta 1010 is a single Access Card, so only one application can access it at a time. Is this correct? The next step was to configure a dual channel input in .asoundrc # envy24 channel 1+2 only pcm.test { type plug ttable.0.0 1 ttable.0.1 1 slave.pcm ice1712 } Which works ok when I do a arecord -d 10 -f cd -t wav -D test -c 2 out.wav (BTW can anyone point me to a tool to split a multi channel wav into a file per channel?) But when I want to record the channels separately with (-I option) arecord -d 10 -f cd -t wav -D test -c 2 -I channel1.wav channel2.wav I get no recordings. Did I miss something with the configuration or what are my options to record all 8 channels via arecord. I've no experience with jackd. Is it an option to install jackd and record the line ins via jackd?

• Remove all HTTP bindings from an IIS 6 site while leaving SSL bindings

  We have a (remote, via a reseller) customer who configured their IIS6 server to not have any port 80 HTTP bindings, only port 443 SSL bindings. We would like to reproduce this without going through the three layers (!) to get to the customer to test some error scenerios. However, whenever I try to get IIS to not listen on IIS at all, I can't do it. If I do it in the UI, either leaving in the main properties page, or in the advanced bindings page, the UI does not let me proceed. If I remove the HTTP ServerBindings from the metabase.xml directly, IIS makes it port 80, all unassigned addresses anyway. Is there a way to get to the "SSL only" state naturally? Please note I am NOT talking about the "require SSL" checkbox or underlying metabase setting, as that still listens on port 80 (or whatever) to give the "SSL required" error message. I'm talking about not having any bindings listed at all for HTTP.

The background story is that my colleague sent me a very interesting article called "10 Things Entrepreneurs Don’t Learn in College." The first point in that post is about the author's experience of programming in the academic environment vs industry environment. After finishing a 4 year Computer Science degree course, I am currently working in the academic environment as a developer, mainly writing Java, J2EE, Javascript code. I know there are differences between academic programming and industry programming, but I was shocked after reading that post. Trying to avoid this happening on me in the future, or the others.   I've been having a problem with the package manager. I seemed to have installed gforge, partially, but it keeps giving me errors whenever I install something. (Note that the thing I'm trying to install actually does get installed, but there is always an error returned). • Selecting a JAX-RS implementation for a new project

  I'm starting a new Java project which will require a RESTful API. It will be a SaaS business application serving mobile clients. I have developed one project with Java EE 6, but I'm not very familiar with the ecosystem, since most of my experience is on the Microsoft platform. Which would be a sensible choice for a JAX-RS implementation for a new project such as described? Judging by Wikipedia's list, main contenders seem to be Jersey, Apache CXF, RESTeasy and Restlet. But the Comparison of JAX-RS Implementations cited on Wikipedia is from 2008. My first impressings from their respective homepages is that: CXF aims to be a very comprehensive solution (reminds me of WCF in the Microsoft space), which makes me think it can be more complex to understand, setup and debug than what I need; Jersey is the reference implementation and might be a good choice, but it's legacy from Sun and I'm not sure how Oracle is treating it (announcements page doesn't work and last commit notice is from 4 months ago); RESTeasy is from JBoss and probably a solid option, though I'm not sure about learning curve; Restlet seems to be popular but has a lot of history, I'm not sure how up-to-date it is in the Java EE 6 world or if it carries a heavy J2EE mindset (like lots of XML configuration). What would be the merits of each of these alternatives? What about learning curve? Feature support? Tooling (e.g. NetBeans or Eclipse wizards)? What about ease of debugging and also deployment? Is any of these project more up-to-date than the others? How stable are them?

• Where is the central ZFS website now?

  Oracle dumped OpenSolaris in Fall 2010, and it is unclear if Oracle will continue to publicly release updates to ZFS, except maybe after they release their next major version of Solaris. FreeBSD now has ZFS v28 available for testing. But where did v28 come from? I notice that the main ZFS website does not show version 28 available. Has this website been abandoned? If so, where is the central website for the ZFS project, so that I can browse the repo, read the mailing lists, read the release notes, etc. (I realize that OpenSolaris has been dumped by Oracle, and that they are limiting their ZFS releases to the community).

• Sound recognition software

  I'm looking for a software able to recognize an specific sound and then do some action. I want to leave my notebook close by the house intercom so when I hear someone ringing it, a very specific and unique sound, it will send me an email at my office or something. The main issue is that there's a lot of different noises there, but none would be as loud as the intercom for the specific place I've left the microphone. Is there any software out there able to do this? Hopefully with a mac version. I trust there's nothing closely related in this to speech or voice recognition technologies, and specially the softwares in there.

• Single sign-on for SharePoint to MySite?

  I've got a fairly simple SharePoint 2010 farm set up: 2 WFE servers with Network Load Balancing hosting the main portal site. As per Microsoft's best practice recommendations I've set up My Sites in a separate web application. As some of the user base are not using domain joined PCs they have to login once for the portal (http://portal) and then again when the access My Sites since they're crossing in to a separate web application on a separate host (http://mysite). Portal & MySite are both hosted on the same physical WFE servers. Is there an easy way to set up some thing to stop this happening and just have them login once? I understand that there's plans for us to deploy ISA in the not too distant future - could we use ISA to manage authentication to the two sites so that the users only need to log in once?

• Local Live Quicktime Video Broadcast, latency?

  I'm looking into the feasibility of using a local server to distribute live video of a conference to delegates in the same room. They would still hear the live audio coming from the speaker, so only the video would be streamed. I was considering a Darwin Steaming Server (a lot of iPhone users to support) and encoding with H.264. My main concern is latency across the network. Even with everything running locally, would there be lip sync issues between the live audio and the 'live' video stream? It feels like there will be problems given the encoding, broadcasting, decoding to be completed, but I've never done any like this before so thought I would check. Thanks

First thing I can think of is to limit access rights to only the directories it needs. But how exactly should I go about this? Setup rights through a user group or a through the user's ownership of those directories. I have very little experience in user rights management. What else do I need to consider?   Would you rather have your firewall hosted or in house if you've got the skills to manage it? We currently have 6 remote offices and 2 different ISP's, one private network and our firewall (Watchguard, licenses are due to expire) is also our main gateway. I don't see how a hosted firewall (in this case Fortinet) is going to work for us especially when it's cheaper to buy our own firewall and the transition from one ISP to a new provider will take some time because our current contracts aren't due to expire soon.
