  • How to have Windows Server DNS use hosts file to resolve specific host names

    Hello, everyone, I'm facing a small problem with Windows Server 2003 DNS service. In my corporation, I'm running Microsoft DNS server(172.16.0.12) to do name resolution to my company intranet(domain name ends in dev.nls. resolving to IP 172.16..), and it is also configured as a DNS forwarder to forward other domain names(e.g. *.google.com , *.sf.net) to Internet real DNS servers. This internal DNS server never tends to serve users from outside world. And, we are running a mail server(serving incoming mail for a real Internet domain @nlscan.com) inside company firewall which can be accessed in either way: by connecting to 172.16.0.10 from within intranet. by connecting to mail.nlscan.com(resolved to 202.101.116.9) from Internet. Note that 172.16.0.10 and 202.101.116.9 is not the same physical machine. The 202 one is a firewall machine who do port forwarding of port 25 and 110 to intranet address 172.16.0.10 . Now my question: If users inside corporate LAN want to resolve mail.nlscan.com, it resolves to 202.101.116.9. That's correct and workable, BUT NOT GOOD, because the mail traffic goes to the firewall machine then bounces to 172.16.0.10 . I hope that our internal DNS server can intercept the name mail.nlscan.com and resolve it to 172.16.0.10 . So, I hope that I can write an entry in "hosts" file on 172.16.0.12 to do this. But, how can Microsoft DNS server recognize this "hosts" file? Maybe you suggest, why not have intranet user use 172.16.0.10 to access my mail server? I have to say it is inconvenient, suppose a user(employee) works on his laptop, daytime in office and nighttime at home. When he is at home, he cannot use 172.16.0.10 . Creating a zone for nlscan.com on our internal DNS server is not feasible, because the name server for nlscan.com domain is on our ISP, and it is responsible for resolving other host names and sub-domains under nlscan.com .     Is there a way to add a new App Path (for adding commands to Start-Run) without needing Admin? With admin, you can add an App Path to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths. I tried adding one under HKCU with no effect. I've added a new (user-writable) location to my user's PATH environment variable which lets me launch things from Start-Run, but the nerd in me still wants to know about the App Paths.

  • Windows Authentication with IIS7 with public facing website

    By default in IIS7, Windows Authentication was turned off and I had to make a configuration change to activate it. When I did that there was a description for Windows Authentication that explained this should only be used for intranet sites, not public facing websites. When you consider NTLM/Kerberos does not use plain text I am not sure why Microsoft have decided this, all of a sudden. Can anybody explain?

    We've a lot of Volume Licences left, but the License Server apparantly doesn't use them. Instead it issues Temporary Per Device CAL's. Which is a bit odd off course... After I uninstalled Visual Studio 2010 beta 2 and installed Visual Studio 2010 RC, executing IISRESET gives the following error message: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\VCiisreset /stop Attempting stop... Stop attempt failed. The system cannot find the file specified. (2147942402, 80070002) Further information. Before bet2, the same computer also had beta1 installed.     I'm trying to do Remote Administration of IIS in C#.NET using System.Web.Administration tools. Everything works fine on a test server (windows 2008), however when I try using our live server (windows 2003) it fails giving the message: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException : Not enough storage is available to process this command. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070008) The server itself has plenty of memory free, so I believe this is some kind of memory limit with the RPC itself. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890425 Is there any way around this?

    In Windows XP we can search for files witch contains a defined keyword (inside all files types) Windows 7 can look inside files for a keywords, okay, but only for text files. (*.doc,*.txt, *.inf, ...), not (*.conf, *.dat, *.*, ...) Microsoft search filters don't contain any filter I can use for this. Any idea?
