  This post is to report some differences when using MVC or IHttpHandlers if you’re attempting to set the Cache-control : max-age or s-maxage value under IIS7.x using the HttpResponse.Cache methods. • Tip: Recording Non-Maximized Applications in UPK

  Have you ever wanted to record an application that would not maximize, or an application that would look strange maximized? Or perhaps your Windows Desktop has become cluttered with icons and you don't want to capture the clutter in your recordings. Here's a tip that will help: create a background for your recording. Create a blank HTML file with a black background in your favorite HTML editor. Or download this sample file: UPK_Recording_Background.html (right click to save). If you would prefer a different color background in the sample file, open it in Notepad and change “#000” to a different HTML color. Open UPK_Recording_Background.html in its own web browser window. Press F11 to make the web browser window full screen. This should give you a completely black screen. (This works great in modern versions of the most popular browsers. I successfully used Firefox 15, Chrome 22, and IE 9. Open or switch to the desired application so that it sits on top of the full screen browser window. If the application you are recording is also in a browser, it is important that it be in a separate browser window from the UPK_Recording_Background.html. Record your topic normally. The above steps create a recording background using an HTML file and a web browser. This is just one method, for instance you could do the same thing with an image editor and an image viewer with a full screen view.   I tried installing the .NET Framework 4.0 and ASP.NET MVC 2 Framework through the web platform installer. It took a long time and finally i had a restart in between for .NET 4 installation and after that due to my system hang problems had to do a couple of restarts. And after that tried installing the ASP.NET MVC 2 alone and it succeeded. (During this time i had all my VS instances closed).  I am having VS 2008 SP1. And finally after opening VS 2008 and clicking on new project it said the above error no template info found. and i dint have even a single template in the new project template selection window. So these are the steps that i did for recovering the same.  Start Menu --> Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 --> Visual Studio Tools. Right-click over the Visual Studio Command Prompt shortcut and make sure you select Run as Administrator. Once the VS Command Prompt comes up, execute the command 1. "devenv /installvstemplates" 2. "devenv /resetsettings"  And that worked out. No Visual studio template information found. See application log in Event viewer for more detail

• Keyboard-shortcut key-press-detection sensitivity settings

  last week I switched from Ubuntu 10.10 to 12.04 and after setting up my keyboard shortcuts, e.g., CTRL+ALT+E for my favorite editor and CTRL+ALT+X for the terminal, I noticed that the behavior when pressing the appropriate keys changed somehow. I know this is very subjective and I am not 100% percent sure if I am suddenly just too lazy when using my keyboard, but here is what I noticed: To run your shortcuts, you usually press the modifiers first and in addition press the alphanum key. Now, if I hold the modifiers down very consciously and press the alphanum key afterwards everything works fine. However, I noticed that I may often release the modifiers a bit too early. In Ubuntu 10.10 (metacity/compiz) my keyboard shortcuts would still execute and my tools would pop up. This does not work anymore in 12.04. Nevertheless, I still believe the old behavior to be more intuitive and would like to have it back. I a nutshell: Is there a parameter to control the shortcut-key-press detection behavior? I already searched the ubuntu keyboard options and searched for "keyboard" in gconf-editor but could not find any hints so far.

• Can JSON be made easily and safely editable by the non-technical Excel crowd?

  I'm looking for a data storage format that's very intuitive and easy to edit. It should be ideally targeted towards the same crowd as Excel. At the same time I would like the data structure to be a tree. Ideally this would be JSON, since it offers both the tree aspect and allows for more interesting constructs like arrays. That and parsing libraries for JSON are ubiquitous, so I don't have to reinvent the wheel. The problem is that, at least with a non-specialized text editor, JSON is a giant pain to edit for a non-technical user. I'm thinking along the lines of someone who might have used Excel in the past, but never a real text editor. Someone who might not be comfortable with the idea of preserving JSON syntax by hand. Are there data formats out there that would fit this profile? I'd very much prefer this to be a JSON actually, but then it would require a solid editing tool that would hide the underlying implementation from the user. Think Excel and how it abstracts CSV syntax from the user. The reason I'm looking for something like this is because the team has been working with pretty hierarchical data for a while now and we've hit the limits of how easy it is to represent in simple CSVs without having to create complex rules for how represent hierarchy semantics from each row. Any suggestions?

  Here is where you can find the sources of the latest and greatest NetBeans Gradle plugin: http://java.net/projects/nb-api-samples/sources/api-samples/show/versions/7.1/misc/GradleSupport To use it, download the sources above, open the sources into the IDE (which must be 7.1.1 or above), then you'll have a NetBeans module. Right-click it to run the module into a new instance of NetBeans IDE. In the Options window's Miscellaneous tab, there's a Gradle subtab for setting the Gradle location. In the New File dialog, in the Other category, you'll find a template named "Empty Gradle file". Make sure to name it "build" and to put it in the root directory of the application (by leaving the Folder field empty, you're specifying it should be created in the root directory). You'll then be able to expand the build.gradle file: Double-click a task to run it. When you open the file, it opens in the Groovy editor, if the Groovy editor is installed. When you make changes in the file, the list of tasks, shown above, is automatically recreated. It's at a really early stage of development and it would be great if developers out there would be interested in adding more features to it.

• Getting the PC speaker to beep

  There has been much written on getting the beep sound from Ubuntu releases over the years. Example: fixing the beep My needs are slightly different in that I do not want to ensure sound card beeps are functioning. Instead, I want PC speaker beeps, the kind produced by the original built-in speaker because I believe they will produce less CPU load. I have confirmed that my computer has the PC speaker by unplugging the external speakers and shutting down Ubuntu. At some point in the shutdown and restart process a beep is heard even though the external speakers have no power. I have tried the following: In /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf, turn these lines into comments: #blacklist snd_pcsp #blacklist pcspkr In .bashrc /usr/bin/xset b on /usr/bin/xset b 100 Enable in the gnome terminal: Edit Profile Prefs General Terminal Bell Ensure no "mute" selections in: System Prefs Sound various tabs (uncheck them all). Select "Enable window and button sounds" in: System Prefs Sound Sound Effects In gconf-editor desktop gnome sound, select the three sound check boxes. In gconf-editor apps metacity general select the audible bell check box. Still I get no PC speaker beeps when I send code 7 to the console via my Java program or use echo -e '\a' on the bash command line. What else should I try? Update Since my goal is to minimize load on the CPU, here is a comparison of elapsed times. Each test is for 100,000 iterations.   I am making my own game editor, but have encountered the following problem: I have two objects, A and B. A's initial values: Position: (3,3,3), Rotation: (45,10,0), Scale(1,2,2.5) B's initial values: Position: (1,1,1), Rotation: (10,34,18), Scale(1.5,2,1) If I now make B a child of A, I need to re-calculate the B's Position, Rotation and Scale relative to A such that it maintains its current position, rotation and scale in world coordinates. So B's position would now be (-2, -2, -2) since now A is its center and (-2, -2, -2) will keep B in the same position. I think I got the Position and scale figured out, but not rotation. So I opened Unity and ran the same example and I noticed that when making a child object, the child object did not move at all. but had its Position, Rotation and Scale values changed relative to the parent. For example: Unity (Parent Object "A"): Position: (0,0,0) Rotation: (45,10,0) Scale: (1,1,1) Unity (Child Object "B"): Position: (0,0,0) Rotation: (0,0,0) Scale: (1,1,1) When B becomes a child of A, it's rotation values become: X: -44.13605 Y: -14.00195 Z: 9.851074 If I plug the same rotation values into the B object in my editor, the object does not move at all. How did Unity arrive at those rotation values for the child? What are the calculations? If you can put all the equations for the Position, Rotation or Scale then I can double check I am doing it correctly but the Rotation is what I really need.

  This question already has an answer here: What is enterprise software, exactly? 8 answers I've been working for a consulting firm for some time, with clients of various sizes, and I've seen web applications ranging in complexity from really simple: MVC Service Layer EF DB To really complex: MVC UoW DI / IoC Repository Service UI Tests Unit Tests Integration Tests But on both ends of the spectrum, the quality requirements are about the same. In simple projects, new devs / consultants can hop on, make changes, and contribute immediately, without having to wade through 6 layers of abstraction to understand what's going on, or risking misunderstanding some complex abstraction and costing down the line. In all cases, there was never a need to actually make code swappable or reusable - and the tests were never actually maintained past the first iteration because requirements changed, it was too time-consuming, deadlines, business pressure, etc etc. So if - in the end - testing and interfaces aren't used rapid development (read: cost-savings) is a priority the project's requirements will be changing a lot while in development ...would it be wrong to recommend a super-simple architecture, even to solve a complex problem, for an enterprise client? Is it complexity that defines enterprise solutions, or is it the reliability, # concurrent users, ease-of-maintenance, or all of the above? I know this is a very vague question, and any answer wouldn't apply to all cases, but I'm interested in hearing from devs / consultants that have been in the business for a while and that have worked with these varying degrees of complexity, to hear if the cool-but-expensive abstractions are worth the overall cost, at least while the project is in development.

• What are some ways to separate game logic from animations and the draw loop?

  I have only previously made flash games, using MovieClips and such to separate out my animations from my game logic. Now I am getting into trying my hand at making a game for Android, but the game programming theory around separating these things still confuses me. I come from a background of developing non game web applications so I am versed in more MVC like patterns and am stuck in that mindset as I approach game programming. I want to do things like abstract my game by having, for example, a game board class that contains the data for a grid of tiles with instances of a tile class that each contain properties. I can give my draw loop access to this and have it draw the game board based on the properties of each tile on the game board, but I don't understand where exactly animation should go. As far as I can tell, animation sort of sits between the abstracted game logic (model) and the draw loop (view). With my MVC mindset, it's frustrating trying to decide where animation is actually supposed to go. It would have quite a bit of data associated with it like a model, but seemingly needs to be very closely coupled with the draw loop in order to have things like frame independent animation. How can I break out of this mindset and start thinking about patterns that make more sense for games?

Defaults for all languages are set via the "All Languages" item in the drop-down. Here, for all languages, you can specify what kind (all, none, or only modified lines) of formatting and space removal will occur automatically when a file is saved: Via the drop-down, you see all the languages supported by the IDE: You can pick a language and then override the default On Save settings: Per language, there may be additional On Save settings. For example, for Java, you can specify that, when saving a Java file, unused import statements should be removed and/or the rules you've set for organizing import statements should be applied: There's also a set of new NetBeans IDE APIs for adding new On Save functionality via custom plugins.   I'm trying to create a 3D editor, but I've been having some trouble with the Camera and understanding each component. I've created 2 camera that works OK, but now I'm trying to implement an Isometric Camera in XNA without success on the rotation and movement of the camera. All I get working is Zoom. But in my default camera I use World Matrix to move, but I guess that's not the best way to go which is why I'm trying this.

• How to factorize code in Unreal Kismet (i.e. "Material Function"s for Kismet)

  In the Unreal Development Kit, when using the Material Editor, one can factorize frequently-used groups of nodes by creating a Material Function (content Browser ? right-click ? new matrial function, IIRC). When defining the behaviour of some actor in Kismet, one can easily have a dozen nodes involved. If I have many actors that share the same behaviour, then I'll copy-paste these nodes, and change the variables so they point to the other actors. This leads to inconsistencies (a modification in the behaviour of an actor isn't propagated in the copy-pasted nodes), complexity (you end up with hundreds of nodes), and generally useless effort. My question is : Can I create a "kismet function", just like a material function ? Note: I'd rather avoid using UnrealScript. I don't even know where to type UnrealScripts, don't know where the documentation is and more generally don't have enough time to invest in learning UnrealScript. This "kismet function" feature must be usable by graphists (with little programming knowledge). If a (simple) script suffices to add this feature in the Kismet editor, so that one can create several "functions" without using UnrealScript, then fine, but I don't really want to have to write a script each time I want to factorize a few nodes. • 404s on password protected content

  I'm new to WordPress and SEO, generally, but we've been running into problems with our site that don't seem to make sense to me. The problem is that our editor likes to schedule posts and/or mark them private until she is ready to make them public, but somehow Google is crawling these posts and getting 404s (because they are password protected). How does Google know they exist in the first place? I checked the sitemap.xml file and don't see a record of the post. One of the offending posts was marked public, but is scheduled for a future date. Could that have something to do with it? I've tried to Google the answer, and I came up with a good amount of reassurance that this won't hurt the site, but I'm still wondering how it's happening in the first place. It's hard because I don't know exactly what the editor's workflow is. Is it possible she's posting publicly first and then revising it to be private only after it's too late? Does anyone know how Google finds WordPress URLs it shouldn't have access to?

• Robust way to keep records of software releases?

  We release a number of small plug-ins that go along with our software. Each plug-in allows our software to talk to a single manufactuer's hardware. I would like to devise a system for keeping track of plug-in releases. Example info that should be stored: Hardware manufacturer name 32-bit? 64-bit? both? What modes of operation does the hardware support? What versions of the manufacturer's driver have been tested with the plugin? Desirable properties of the system: Able to synchronize with version control software Stores data in human-readable text file (also good for differ tool) Free visual, spreadsheet-like editor available Able to do simple analysis like "What is the oldest plug-in?" I've got to imagine that someone else has tackled this problem already. Right now my best guess is XML/JSON with a visual editor, but I have been disappointed in the editors I've tried so far. I'd like to get input from some more experienced developers. Thanks!

• What kind of permission is this? (Groups+Roles)

  I'm starting to need an access control for roles in my app. I don't know much of this, but I understand how vBulletin works: I create groups, then give permissions to groups. I think that what I need is the Role Bases Access Control (RBAC) , but i'm not sure, because I need groups to give permissions instead of single users (Maybe it's not that complicated to achieve). Example of what I'm thinking: Given a post: Editor's Group has permission to view it before it's published. Editor's Group has permission to edit its content. Public Group (Default) has not permission to view it before it's published. Admin Group has permission to delete the post. So basically I wan't orientation about if RBAC is what I need. And also, how would it be good to store group membership in a user, for example, would be good to have: ID NAME PASSWORD GROUPS (1, MyName, MyPassword, 1/2/3/4/5) and explode it via PHP or one registry for every Group membership in a table named permissions, example: USERID, USERGROUP values (1, 1), (1, 2) Maybe should be the second way because of the formal norms but I didn't study yet Databases 1 at college.
