  • How can I enforce Eclipse to use Sun Java?

    Hi Before installing Eclipse I had Open JDK on default. Now I changed it to Sun Java. I did as Eclipse Helios was running really slow, unfortunately it is still... Do you have any ideas how to enforce it to use Java Sun? I could reinstal it however I have already Android SDK installed so I would have to do all the process again, after all thats not the correct way of solving problem I think. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10. java -version java version "1.6.0_22" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build1.6.0_22-b04) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 17.1-b03, mixed mode) Would be grateful for any help.     Some pseudocode from a typical web app: String a = "A bunch of text"; //UTF-16 saveTextInDb(a); //Write to Oracle VARCHAR(15) column String b = readTextFromDb(); //UTF-16 out.write(b); //Write to http response In the first line we create a Java String which uses UTF-16. When you save to Oracle VARCHAR(15) does Oracle also store this as UTF-16? Does the length of an Oracle VARCHAR refer to number of Unicode characters (and not number of bytes)? And then when we write b to the ServletResponse is this being written as UTF-16 or are we by default converting to another encoding like UTF-8?

  • How can I prevent VirtualBox from changing the permissions on the .vbox File?

    I'm currently running Ubuntu 13.04, and I've got a Windows 8 VirtualBox VM installed. I put the VM's folder in a shared folder (/home/sharedHome/) that has read and write permissions assigned to the vboxusers group. This allows me to launch the VM from my account and my wife can launch it from hers. The only problem is that when you launch the VM from either account, the permissions get changed so that only that user has read and write privileges on the .vbox file. After this happens, the other account can't launch the VM unless I go in and change the permissions again. Does anyone know how to prevent VirtualBox from changing the permissions? Is there a better way to share a VM between users? Thanks!

    When I sent a proposal for session "Managing and Troubleshooting MySQL for Oracle DBAs" to MySQL Connect conference org committee it had not any mention of Oracle in its name, but later I was asked to provide more details for former Oracle DBAs who want to use MySQL. I was fast and I said "yes".So my original aim to teach people to troubleshoot MySQL changed to teaching of how different is MySQL from Oracle in troubleshooting aspects. Although both RDBMs have very much in common they are definitely very different. So what I am going to speak about this time is nuances of how MySQL stores data, how it manages locks, why its high availability solutions: MySQL Cluster and Replication have same names as Oracle's, but work differently and more. And, of course, I will tell how to troubleshoot it all.

Anytime i try to connect to an oracle database using OCI8. I'm not sure that oci8 is install properly. Can someone provide steps for installation of OCI8 using Mamp Pro?

    I am trying to install Oracle Client 11.1.0.7 on a Windows Server 2008 64-bit. To some this might not be rocket science but I can't understand what the options under the install screen "Specify Home Details" mean. The defaults given suggest that I use Oracle Base and install software under my own account name. It also suggests that each user should have a separate Oracle Base. This seems counter intuitive to me. I am doing a server install after all. All I want to use the installation for is to connect to an Oracle Database from Reporting Services. Can I safely ignore this and just accept the defaults? What are the implications if I change the location to a common directory?

When selecting the table product I get ORA-00942: table or view does not exist I have tried this solution but I don't have sufficiënt rights to add a new user. I get ORA-01031: insufficient privileges I am logged on as ADMIN to oracle application express. The environment we use is windows server 2003. What can I do to 1) access my tables and 2) get back the administration rights I am supposed to have?
